You can display your current driving speed in the Google Maps app on your phone; Android Auto is not required. On Android, open Google Maps > profile picture or initial > Settings > Navigation > Driving options, then switch on Speedometer. On iPhone, open Google Maps > Settings > Navigation > Map display and enable Show speedometer. Start vehicle navigation after changing the setting.
The Maps speedometer is an informational GPS-based estimate, not a calibrated replacement for the car’s instrument panel. Keep the vehicle’s own speedometer as the authority, and mount the phone where it is visible without blocking your view or controls.
Quick answer: the two menu paths

These settings affect Google Maps on the phone itself. They do not require connecting the phone to Android Auto, and they are separate from any speed display supplied by a vehicle or dashboard system.
Turn on the speedometer on an Android phone
Enable the setting before you drive
- Open the current version of the Google Maps app.
- Tap your profile picture or your initial in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Tap Navigation.
- Scroll to Driving options.
- Turn on Speedometer.
- Choose a destination and tap Start to begin vehicle navigation. The speed readout should appear on the navigation screen once Maps has a usable location signal.
The switch is normally persistent, so you should not need to repeat these steps for every trip. Google can change labels or move a setting through an app or server-side update; if the wording differs, use the Navigation settings search or inspect the Driving options section rather than assuming the feature has been removed.

Use the in-navigation speed-limit control when it is offered
In locations where Google’s Speed Limits feature is available, Maps can show a speed-limit icon during navigation. Tapping that control may toggle the speedometer without returning to Settings. This shortcut is conditional: the icon may be absent when speed-limit data is unavailable for the road or region. The absence of the icon does not prove that the main Speedometer switch is disabled.
Turn on the speedometer on an iPhone
Enable “Show speedometer”
- Open Google Maps on the iPhone.
- Open the Maps menu and tap Settings.
- Select Navigation.
- Under Map display, turn on Show speedometer.
- Return to the map, enter a destination and start vehicle navigation.
The iPhone rollout described in July 2024 presents the speedometer as a circle while navigating. The indicator can change color when the displayed speed is above the posted limit, provided that speed-limit information is available for that location. The exact appearance can vary as Google updates the iPhone app and its regional feature rollout.
What you will see while driving
Current speed
The speedometer is a live estimate calculated from the phone’s location signals and displayed inside the navigation view. It is intended to help you glance at speed while following a route, not to replace the vehicle’s legally required or calibrated instrument cluster. A brief delay, a blank value, or a changing number can occur while the phone is acquiring or refining its position.

Posted speed limit
Google Maps can show a separate speed-limit indicator only where Google has speed-limit data for the road. It is not guaranteed on every street, in every country, or for every temporary restriction. A missing speed-limit sign in Maps means that data is unavailable or not being displayed; it is not permission to infer the legal limit from the speedometer.
Color warnings
Where the feature supports it, the speed indicator changes color if the displayed speed exceeds the posted limit. Treat that color as an attention cue, not as a precise enforcement threshold. Roadworks, variable limits, weather restrictions and recently changed signs may not be reflected immediately in map data.
Why Google Maps speed can differ from the car
Google explicitly warns that external factors can make the Maps Speedometer differ from your actual speed. The phone’s estimate and the vehicle’s speedometer are produced by different systems and can update at different rates. Common reasons for a mismatch include:

- GPS sampling and signal quality: Buildings, tunnels, tree cover, mountains and poor sky visibility can reduce the quality or frequency of location fixes.
- Acceleration or braking: A phone estimate can lag behind a rapidly changing vehicle speed because it is calculated from movement over time.
- Position processing: Maps may smooth noisy location points, while the car’s instrument cluster uses vehicle sensors and its own calibration.
- Road geometry: On bends, ramps or roads running close together, a location point can briefly be associated with the wrong carriageway or speed-limit record.
- Device conditions: Battery-saving modes, restricted location permissions, an overheated phone or an obstructed antenna can interrupt updates.
- Vehicle calibration: The car’s speedometer itself can have a manufacturer-specified tolerance, especially after tire-size changes. Neither display should be treated as a laboratory measurement.

For the same reason, do not attempt to correct the car’s speedometer by averaging it with the phone readout. If the two disagree, follow the vehicle’s speedometer and the posted road signs.
Set up the phone so the display is usable
Use a secure mount
A dashboard or windshield car phone mount can keep the map and speed indicator in your peripheral view. Choose a holder that matches the phone’s size, remains secure over bumps and does not cover the camera, controls or airbags. A mount improves visibility and reduces the temptation to hold the phone; it does not improve GPS accuracy or make the Maps estimate a calibrated instrument.

Keep the screen readable without handling it
- Set a readable text size and brightness before moving.
- Start navigation and select the route while parked.
- Keep the phone plugged in if a long trip or bright screen would drain the battery.
- Do not type, browse settings or move the mount while the vehicle is in motion.
- Follow local rules governing windshield placement and phone use. Legal requirements differ by jurisdiction.
Troubleshooting on Android
The Speedometer switch is missing
- Confirm that you opened the Google Maps app, not a browser shortcut or another navigation app.
- Open the profile menu, select Settings, then Navigation, and scroll through Driving options.
- Update Google Maps through the device’s app store if an update is available, then reopen Maps.
- Check that the phone has a location permission suitable for navigation and that device-wide Location is enabled.
- Try the setting again after connecting to a reliable data network; some Maps features are enabled by staged or server-side rollout.
Google’s menu wording can change between releases. If the option still does not appear, the feature may not be available for that account, app build or region yet. Do not install an unofficial speedometer overlay while driving just to replace a missing Maps control.
The switch is on but no speed appears
- Start turn-by-turn vehicle navigation; the setting does not necessarily show a speed value on the idle map.
- Move to an open area with a clear view of the sky and wait for a location fix.
- Check that Location is enabled and that Maps is allowed to use it while navigating.
- Disable a battery-saver rule that pauses location updates, then restart navigation.
- Force-close and reopen Maps if the navigation screen is stuck, and restart the phone if location remains unavailable.
The value jumps or looks implausible
Wait for a stable location fix and compare the display with the car’s speedometer while traveling steadily on an open road. If Maps repeatedly shows an implausible value while the vehicle display is normal, rely on the car’s instrument panel and investigate the phone’s location permissions, signal obstruction or device condition. Do not use an erratic Maps reading to decide how fast to drive.
Troubleshooting on iPhone
“Show speedometer” is not listed
- Open Google Maps, not Apple Maps, and enter the Settings > Navigation section.
- Look under Map display for Show speedometer.
- Install any available Google Maps update and reopen the app.
- In iPhone Settings, verify that Location Services is on and that Google Maps has a navigation-appropriate location permission.
- Check again later if the option is still absent; the iPhone feature has been rolled out progressively and can depend on regional availability.
The circle or color change does not appear
Begin vehicle navigation rather than viewing the map without a route. A speed-limit color warning requires speed-limit data for the current road, so it may not appear on an unfamiliar street, private road or region without coverage. A missing color change does not establish that you are within the legal limit; read the road signs and follow the car’s speedometer.

Android Auto is not part of this method
Android Auto is an in-car interface that can project compatible apps to a vehicle display. The instructions here run Google Maps directly on the Android phone or iPhone. You can enable the phone setting without pairing to Android Auto, without a compatible head unit and without changing any vehicle settings. If you later use Android Auto, its map layout and available controls may differ from the phone interface; configure the phone setting first and verify what the projected display actually shows while parked.

Safety and legal reminders
- Set the route, enable the feature and position the mount before moving.
- Keep your eyes primarily on the road and use the display only for brief glances.
- Never hold the phone or interact with menus while driving.
- Observe posted limits even if Maps shows a different value or no limit.
- Follow local laws for hands-free use, windshield mounting and dashboard placement.
- If the phone overheats, loses location or becomes distracting, stop safely and rely on the vehicle’s instruments.
The phone speedometer is useful as a supplementary visual aid when you want speed and navigation in one screen. It is not a substitute for the car’s speedometer, road signs or safe driving judgment.
