At a participating U.S. TSA checkpoint, you can show an eligible identity credential from Apple Wallet by holding your iPhone or Apple Watch near the identity reader, reviewing the requested information, and approving the transaction on your device. Acceptance is limited to participating airports, terminals and lanes, so check the checkpoint signage and carry a physical TSA-accepted ID whenever practical.

This guide explains which Wallet credentials qualify, how to enroll before your trip, what happens at the reader, how passport-based Digital ID differs from a state license, and what to do when digital presentation is unavailable.

What you can show from Apple Wallet

Apple Wallet offers two different identity options for domestic TSA checkpoint use:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An eligible state-issued driver’s license or state ID. The credential is issued by a participating U.S. state or territory and provisioned into Wallet after identity checks and approval by the issuing authority.
  • Passport-based Digital ID. This is created from a U.S. passport and can be presented at participating TSA checkpoints for domestic flights. It is a separate Wallet credential from a physical passport and from a state license.

A Wallet credential is not a photograph or screenshot of an ID. The process uses a supported identity reader and an authenticated device-to-reader exchange. Showing an image in Photos, Files or another app does not provide the same credential.

State-issued IDs

As of October 13, 2026, Apple lists these jurisdictions for state-issued licenses and IDs in Wallet: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, Virginia and West Virginia. The list is changeable. Verify the current list on Apple’s live ID in Wallet information before relying on a state credential for a trip.

Being a resident of a listed jurisdiction does not mean every airport accepts the credential. Eligibility to add an ID and acceptance at a particular checkpoint are separate questions. A newly added jurisdiction can also have different rollout coverage from an airport that has supported digital identification for longer.

Passport-based Digital ID

Apple also supports creating Digital ID from a U.S. passport. Apple describes domestic TSA checkpoint presentation at participating locations. It does not establish that this Wallet credential can replace a physical passport for international flights, immigration inspection, customs or border crossings. Bring the physical travel documents required for those journeys.

Set up your credential before travel

Enrollment requires several scans and identity-confirmation steps. Do it days before departure, not while standing in a security line. Approval is part of setup; merely scanning a card or passport does not make a credential ready for presentation.

Add a state driver’s license or state ID

  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone and choose the option to add an ID or driver’s license.
  2. Select your issuing state or territory. If it is not listed, that jurisdiction is not currently eligible for this Apple Wallet feature.
  3. Scan the front of the physical card when prompted, then scan the back. Use even lighting and keep all edges visible.
  4. Complete the identity-confirmation movements and any additional checks shown on the iPhone. These steps help verify that the person enrolling is the person represented by the credential.
  5. Submit the enrollment to the issuing authority for approval. The credential is not ready for airport use until Wallet shows that setup has completed.

Keep the physical card available during enrollment. If a scan fails, clean the camera lens, place the card on a flat surface and repeat the capture in brighter, indirect light. A card that is expired, damaged or difficult to read may require correction with the issuing authority before enrollment can finish.

Create passport-based Digital ID

  1. In Wallet, select the option for a passport-based Digital ID.
  2. Scan the photo page of your U.S. passport as directed.
  3. Use the iPhone to read the passport’s embedded chip. Hold the phone still over the passport until the read completes.
  4. Finish the identity-confirmation prompts and wait for Wallet to finish creating the credential.

A passport-based Digital ID is not itself a REAL ID document. Apple says that, at participating TSA checkpoints, it supplies an indicator that it is an acceptable alternative to REAL ID for that checkpoint transaction.

Verify setup before leaving

Open Wallet at home and confirm that the credential appears on the device you intend to carry. Check that the enrollment status is complete rather than awaiting approval. If you use an Apple Watch, make sure the credential is available on the watch you will present; do not assume that a credential on an iPhone automatically means every paired device is ready for the reader.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm that your airport and checkpoint participate

Apple says Wallet ID works at eligible U.S. airports and TSA checkpoints, not universally at every airport, terminal or lane. Look for identity-reader signage as you approach security and follow instructions from TSA officers. Airport participation can differ by terminal or checkpoint, and a reader may be temporarily unavailable.

Do not interpret an airport’s general support for digital identification as a guarantee that the exact lane you use will accept your credential. If you cannot confirm participation, plan to present a physical TSA-accepted credential instead. Check again close to departure because Apple’s jurisdiction list and checkpoint coverage can change.

How to present Apple Wallet ID at the reader

  1. Keep your iPhone or Apple Watch ready as you enter the checkpoint area. Follow the reader’s on-screen instructions rather than opening a random Wallet item.
  2. Hold the top of the iPhone near the contactless reader, or position the Apple Watch as directed. The reader and your device will indicate when they have established a connection.
  3. Review the specific information requested on your device. The prompt tells you what data the checkpoint is asking to verify.
  4. Authorize the presentment on the iPhone or Apple Watch. No information is shared until you confirm.
  5. Wait for the reader or TSA officer to indicate that the transaction is complete, then proceed as directed. Keep the device with you throughout the interaction.

Apple provides a TSA presentation flow for both iPhone and Apple Watch. The approval step is essential: simply bringing up Wallet or holding the phone near a reader does not authorize disclosure. If the reader asks you to reposition the device, follow that instruction rather than repeatedly tapping or opening other apps.

What information is shared and how privacy works

Apple says the device displays the particular fields requested by the reader and does not share them without your confirmation. After authorization, Apple describes an end-to-end encrypted connection between the device and the reader. Apple also says that neither Apple nor the issuing state authority knows when or where the credential is presented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TSA separately says digital-identification information is received at checkpoints with the passenger’s consent. TSA says it does not copy or store the digital ID except in limited testing environments it describes in its digital-identification FAQ. These are Apple’s and TSA’s stated practices, not independent audit findings.

Review the request before approving it. If the information shown does not match the purpose of the checkpoint transaction, cancel and ask a TSA officer for help rather than authorizing an unexpected request. The consent screen is your opportunity to see what the reader is requesting; do not treat the process like showing a static card where every field is automatically disclosed.

State Wallet ID, passport Digital ID and a physical credential compared

Option Who can provision it Where it can be used Document purpose Physical fallback
State-issued license or ID in Wallet Residents whose issuing jurisdiction is currently supported by Apple Participating U.S. TSA checkpoints that accept the credential Domestic airport identity verification; it is not a replacement for every use of the physical card Carry the physical state ID or another TSA-accepted credential
Passport-based Digital ID in Wallet People with an eligible U.S. passport who complete Apple’s scan and chip-read enrollment Participating U.S. TSA checkpoints for domestic flights Checkpoint identity verification; not a physical passport, not a REAL ID document, and not established for international border travel Carry the physical passport when it is needed for the trip
Physical TSA-accepted credential Anyone who possesses a currently accepted document TSA checkpoints according to the agency’s current accepted-ID rules Primary paper or card-based travel identification, with uses outside the checkpoint depending on the document The document itself is the fallback

The practical choice depends on four questions: can you provision the credential, does your exact checkpoint accept it, is it suitable only for domestic checkpoint verification or for another travel purpose, and do you have a physical fallback? A Wallet credential can be convenient without being the only document you need for an itinerary.

REAL ID rules you still need to understand

Beginning May 7, 2025, TSA stopped accepting non-REAL-ID-compliant state licenses and IDs as valid identification at airport checkpoints. A noncompliant state license is therefore not a dependable workaround when a traveler lacks an accepted credential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TSA lists alternatives, including a U.S. passport and other federal or state credentials. If you arrive without acceptable identification, TSA may direct you into an identity-verification process and may apply additional screening. If your identity cannot be confirmed, TSA will not allow you through the checkpoint. A Wallet credential can help only when the credential and the specific checkpoint are supported.

TSA says, “The list of acceptable IDs is subject to change without notice.” Check the agency’s current acceptable-identification guidance close to departure. REAL ID enforcement does not turn every state license in Wallet into a REAL ID document, and passport-based Digital ID should not be described that way.

What to carry even when Wallet ID is ready

  • A physical TSA-accepted ID. This protects you if the lane lacks a compatible reader, participation changes or your device cannot be used.
  • A charged iPhone or Apple Watch. Digital presentation depends on a functioning, enrolled device.
  • The physical passport for international travel. Passport-based Digital ID is described for domestic TSA checkpoint use, not international border crossing.
  • Travel details and access to your Apple Account credentials. Keep the information needed to recover or verify your device available, without handing over passwords at the checkpoint.

Do not pack the only physical ID in checked luggage. Keep it accessible until you have completed security and any other identity checks required during the trip. A backup is especially important for a connection through a different airport, where another checkpoint may not have the same reader coverage.

If you arrive without an accepted ID

TSA may attempt to verify your identity through its additional process, but that is not a guaranteed substitute for presenting an accepted credential. You may face additional screening, and TSA will not let you enter the checkpoint if your identity cannot be confirmed. A non-REAL-ID state license that is not otherwise accepted does not create a reliable exception. The safest plan is to resolve the document issue before travel or carry an accepted alternative, such as a U.S. passport.

Troubleshooting at the checkpoint

The reader does not detect your iPhone or Watch

Follow the reader’s positioning instructions and hold the device steady. Confirm that you are presenting the enrolled device containing the credential, not a different phone or a device that has not completed setup. If the reader still fails, ask the TSA officer whether another lane or a physical document should be used.

The credential is missing from Wallet

Enrollment may not have finished, or approval by the issuing authority may still be pending. Do not attempt to enroll for the first time in the security line. Present your physical ID and complete setup later when you have a reliable connection and enough time for the confirmation process.

Your phone or watch battery is low

Use the physical TSA-accepted credential you carried. A digital credential should supplement, not replace, a usable backup document.

The checkpoint says Wallet ID is unavailable

Participation is checkpoint-specific and can change. Follow the officer’s direction and present your physical credential. Do not argue that Wallet must work simply because another airport accepted it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The requested information looks wrong

Decline the transaction and ask a TSA officer to clarify. Check that the Wallet credential belongs to you and that your state or passport records are current. Resolve record discrepancies with the issuing authority rather than trying repeated presentations.

You are sent to another lane

Follow the officer’s direction and ask whether the alternate lane accepts digital identification. If it does not, use the physical credential you brought. A lane change is not evidence that your Wallet credential is invalid; it may simply have different equipment or procedures.

Common questions travelers ask

How do I show my ID on my iPhone at TSA?

At an eligible checkpoint, follow the reader prompts, hold the top of your iPhone near the reader, review the requested fields and approve sharing on the device. The process requires a supported Wallet credential and a participating reader.

Can I use my Apple Wallet driver’s license at any airport?

No. Apple limits use to eligible U.S. airports and TSA checkpoints. Check the signage at your terminal and keep a physical accepted ID available.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Can I use my passport in Apple Wallet to fly?

You can use Apple’s passport-based Digital ID for identity verification at participating TSA checkpoints on domestic flights. It does not replace the physical passport for international travel or prove that every airport will accept a digital presentation.

Is a passport-based Digital ID the same as REAL ID?

No. Apple says the passport-based Digital ID is not a REAL ID document, although it can provide an acceptable-alternative indicator at participating TSA checkpoints.

Can I show a screenshot of my license?

No. The supported process uses an enrolled Wallet credential and a compatible identity reader. A screenshot or photograph is not the Wallet presentment flow described by Apple and TSA.

Do I need to hand my phone to the TSA officer?

The described flow has you present the device to the reader and authorize the request on your own iPhone or Apple Watch. Follow the officer’s instructions, but review and approve the disclosure on your device rather than treating a photo or screenshot as proof of identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my state is not on Apple’s list?

You cannot currently add that state-issued license or ID through the Wallet feature. Use another TSA-accepted physical credential or, if eligible, complete passport-based Digital ID setup before travel. Recheck Apple’s current list because jurisdictions can be added or changed.

Can I use Wallet ID for an international flight?

The documented Apple use is identity verification at participating U.S. TSA checkpoints for domestic travel. Carry the physical passport and any other documents required for international departure, transit and entry.

Will Wallet ID always be faster?

Apple and TSA do not promise faster screening or acceptance in every lane. The transaction still depends on an eligible credential, a working reader, your device and the checkpoint’s procedures.

Preflight checklist

  1. Confirm that your state or passport-based credential is eligible in Apple Wallet.
  2. Complete enrollment and identity confirmation before travel.
  3. Check whether your airport and likely checkpoint participate.
  4. Open the credential once at home so you know which device contains it.
  5. Charge your iPhone or Apple Watch.
  6. Pack a physical TSA-accepted ID in your carry-on.
  7. Bring the physical passport for any international itinerary or other use that requires it.
  8. At security, follow the reader and device prompts, review the requested data and authorize only the transaction you understand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does TSA accept Apple Wallet ID at my airport?

Only at participating U.S. airports and TSA checkpoints. Check the signage at your terminal or lane and carry a physical TSA-accepted ID in case the reader or participation is unavailable.

How do I show my Apple Wallet driver’s license at security?

Present the enrolled iPhone or Apple Watch to the identity reader, follow its prompts, review the requested information and approve the transaction on your device.

Can I use a passport in Apple Wallet instead of my passport?

Passport-based Digital ID can support identity verification at participating TSA checkpoints for domestic flights. It is not established as a replacement for the physical passport for international travel or border crossings.

What happens if TSA cannot verify my identity?

TSA may use an identity-verification process and apply additional screening, but if your identity cannot be confirmed, you will not be allowed through the checkpoint.

Is Apple Wallet Digital ID a REAL ID?

No. Apple says passport-based Digital ID is not a REAL ID document, although it can provide an acceptable-alternative indicator at participating TSA checkpoints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a photo or screenshot of my ID?

No. The supported method uses an enrolled Wallet credential and a compatible identity reader; a photo or screenshot is not the same presentment process.

Should I carry a physical ID if my Wallet credential is ready?

Yes. A physical TSA-accepted credential protects you if your airport, terminal or lane does not participate, the reader is unavailable, or your device cannot be used.

The Bottom Line

Apple Wallet ID can make domestic TSA identity verification convenient when your credential, device and checkpoint are all supported. Set it up early, verify local participation and treat a physical TSA-accepted ID as your backup; Wallet availability is not universal and does not replace a passport for international travel.
