Visibility is controlled by one launch option in the Valheim Dedicated Server script: -public 1 publishes the server in Valheim’s in-game/community server list, while -public 0 removes it from that list. A hidden server is still joinable when players enter its address and port through Join IP.
The setting only controls browser discovery. Firewall rules, router forwarding, the selected backend, and whether the server process has connected successfully still determine whether anyone can reach the world.

Valheim reads the -public value when the dedicated server starts. The two supported values have different discovery and access behavior:

Changing this value does not create or remove a world, alter the save interval, or repair a network path. It is a discovery preference applied at launch.

Prepare the dedicated-server files
Install Valheim Dedicated Server from Steam
- Open Steam and switch the Library filter to Tools.
- Install Valheim Dedicated Server.
- Open the tool’s installation folder from Steam’s local-files option or by browsing to the library location you selected.
The installation contains a Windows batch script named start_headless_server.bat and a Linux shell script named start_server.sh. Use the script that matches the operating system running the server.
Work from a copy of the launch script
Make a copy of the startup file before editing it. Iron Gate recommends this because a Steam update can restore the original file and remove your custom option. Give the copy a clear name, then make sure your shortcut, scheduled task, service, or terminal command starts that copy rather than the untouched original.
Show the server in the browser on Windows
- Stop the currently running dedicated-server process if it is active.
- Open your copied
start_headless_server.batin a text editor. - Find the launch command and locate the token
-public. If the command already contains-public 0, replace the value with1. If it has no public option, add-public 1alongside the other server arguments. - Save the copied batch file without changing its
.batextension. - Start the server using that copied file.
- Watch the console until it reports Game server connected. That message is the operational checkpoint that the server is up and ready to accept connections.
Do not put the option in a separate command window after the server has started. It must be part of the command that launches the dedicated server, and the edited file must be the one you actually run.
Hide the server from the browser on Windows
- Open the copy of
start_headless_server.batthat your normal shortcut or task launches. - Change the launch argument to
-public 0. Keep the hyphen and the space between the option and its value. - Save the file and launch the server again.
- Confirm Game server connected appears in the console before testing a connection.
Once the process has started with -public 0, the absence of a browser entry is expected. Test access with Join IP rather than repeatedly refreshing the community list.

Show or hide the server on Linux
- Stop the running server process.
- Open your copied
start_server.shin a text editor. - In the launch command, set the value to
-public 1to publish the server or-public 0to hide it. - Save the script.
- Run the copied script using the same account and service definition you normally use for the server.
- Wait for the log line Game server connected before diagnosing browser discovery or direct connections.
If you start the server through systemd, a container, a terminal multiplexer, or another wrapper, verify that wrapper points to the edited copy. Editing one script while a service launches another is a common reason the setting appears to have no effect.
How friends join a hidden server
-public 0 removes the listing; it does not disable multiplayer. Give each player the server’s reachable address and game port, then have them use Valheim’s Join IP control.
- Provide the address players should reach from outside your network and the configured game port.
- In Valheim, open the multiplayer join screen and choose Join IP.
- Enter the address and port exactly as supplied, then submit the connection.
- Use the server password if the server requires one.
The official dedicated-server guidance describes an invisible server as “only joinable via the ‘Join IP’-button.” Players should not expect a hidden server to appear after filtering, searching, or waiting in the browser.
Steam and Crossplay use different network paths
The visibility flag is the same, but the backend changes the networking work required to make a server reachable.

A public listing cannot bypass a blocked firewall, an incorrect router rule, a closed port, or a server that never connected to its backend. Conversely, a hidden server can work normally through Join IP when its selected backend and network path are configured correctly.
Why a public server is not showing in the in-game list
Check that the server reached the connection checkpoint
Read the dedicated-server console first. If Game server connected has not appeared, discovery troubleshooting is premature: the process is not yet in the ready state. Resolve the startup or backend error shown in the log, then test the list again.
Confirm the value and the file being launched
Open the exact script used by your shortcut, scheduled task, service, or terminal command. Confirm it contains -public 1, not -public 0, and that there is not a second launch script overriding the edited command. Steam updates can also replace the original file, which is why using a maintained copy matters.
Verify the backend
Determine whether the command starts the Steam backend or includes -crossplay. Steam and Crossplay do not expose traffic in the same way. A Steam server depends on the documented internet-reachable port pair; a Crossplay server uses a relay and has different router implications. Applying Steam forwarding instructions to a Crossplay setup, or assuming a relay exists when the server is using Steam, can make a correctly public server unreachable.

Check firewall and router exposure for Steam
For the Steam backend, allow the server application through the host firewall and make the configured port and its next port reachable from the internet. The documented default is 2456-2457; if you changed the starting port, use that port and the immediately following one instead of blindly forwarding the default pair.
Do not confuse an intentionally hidden server with a failed listing
If the command contains -public 0, an empty browser result is the intended behavior. Supply the address and port and test through Join IP. This distinguishes a deliberate privacy choice from a discovery failure without changing other server settings.
Allow for uncertainty rather than inventing a propagation timer
There is no authoritative published wait time for browser propagation after changing -public. Once the server has been restarted and reports Game server connected, verify the launch argument and network backend instead of relying on an assumed number of minutes.
Choosing public or hidden operation
Use -public 1 when discoverability is useful
- New or occasional players need to find the world without receiving a separate address.
- You want the server name to be searchable in Valheim’s community list.
- Your Steam or Crossplay network path is already working and you accept that anyone browsing can see the listing.
Use -public 0 when access should be invitation-only
- You want to keep the server out of public search results.
- Your regular players can safely receive the address and port.
- You prefer direct connections and do not want browser discovery to be part of the join process.
In either mode, keep the password and network controls configured for the players you intend to admit. Hiding the listing reduces discoverability; it is not a substitute for authentication or firewall policy.

A repeatable change-and-test checklist
- Identify the operating system and the backend: Steam or Crossplay.
- Open the maintained copy of the correct startup script.
- Set exactly one visibility value:
-public 1for a listed server or-public 0for a hidden server. - Save the file and launch that copy, not an older original.
- Wait for Game server connected.
- If public, search the in-game/community list. If hidden, use Join IP with the address and port.
- If the test fails, check the selected backend, firewall, router exposure, and the actual script command before changing unrelated world settings.
Common questions answered by the setting
Does -public 0 stop friends from joining?
No. It removes browser discovery and directs players to Join IP; it does not remove the server’s ability to accept direct connections.
Can -public 1 fix a blocked port?
No. It requests a listing, but firewall, router, backend, and process readiness still control reachability.
Which ports should a default Steam server use?
Iron Gate documents 2456-2457 as the default Steam pair. The configured starting port and the next port are the two ports used by the server.
Is router forwarding required with Crossplay?
For the Crossplay relay path, outside players do not need router port forwarding. The configured port remains relevant for distinguishing servers that share one public IP.
