The method depends on your edition. In Java Edition, press F3 (or Fn+F3 on some laptops and Macs) to open the debug screen and read the XYZ coordinates. In Bedrock Edition, turn on Show Coordinates in the world or game settings, or have an administrator run /gamerule showcoordinates true.

If Java coordinates are missing from the debug screen, the server may have enabled reducedDebugInfo. A Java administrator can normally restore the full display with /gamerule reducedDebugInfo false. The sections below cover both editions, permissions, version differences, and the most common failures.

Choose the correct method for your edition

Java and Bedrock do not use the same coordinate display. Java puts coordinates in a temporary debug overlay opened with a keyboard shortcut. Bedrock puts them in the normal heads-up display (HUD), controlled by a gamerule and a settings switch.

Edition Player action Administrator control What can hide coordinates
Java Edition Press F3; use Fn+F3 when the function row is assigned to hardware controls. Set reducedDebugInfo to false when the debug screen has been reduced. The reduced-debug gamerule, a function-key shortcut being intercepted by the computer, or a server version using a different gamerule spelling.
Bedrock Edition Enable Show Coordinates in the world or in-game settings. Set showcoordinates to true. The HUD option being off, a command entered without administrator permission, or a platform/version using a different capitalization of the gamerule name.

Before troubleshooting, confirm whether the player is using Java or Bedrock. A Java instruction will not create a Bedrock HUD box, and the Bedrock gamerule does not control Java’s F3 screen.

Show coordinates on a Java Edition server

1. Open the F3 debug screen

  1. Join the server and stand at the location you want to record.
  2. Press F3. On many laptops and some Apple keyboards, press Fn+F3 because the function row is assigned to brightness or media controls.
  3. Read the XYZ coordinate entry in the debug information. It identifies the player’s current position, including the block-level position for the player’s feet when the full display is available.
  4. Press F3 again to close the overlay.

The overlay is a client-side screen, so each player opens it on their own computer. You do not need to turn on a Bedrock-style HUD option in Java.

2. Restore the full debug screen when XYZ is absent

Java has a server gamerule named reducedDebugInfo. It was added in Java 1.8 (snapshot 14w29a) and limits the number of lines shown on the F3 screen. With the rule enabled, the block-level coordinate line for the player’s feet is hidden, even when a player has selected coordinate display choices such as In Overlay or Always.

  • Team up with friends in eight-playeronline multiplayer and four-player splitscreen modes

/gamerule reducedDebugInfo false

  1. Obtain operator or console access; an ordinary player cannot change a server gamerule without the required permission.
  2. Enter the command exactly, including the value false.
  3. Open the F3 screen again and look for the coordinate lines.

References and server versions have used both reducedDebugInfo and reduced_debug_info spellings. The camel-case form above is the commonly documented Java form, but if your server reports an unknown gamerule, use command autocomplete or that version’s documentation to check whether the underscore form is accepted. Do not repeatedly guess at commands on a live server; an administrator should verify the name against the exact Java version.

3. Understand what reduced debug information also disables

reducedDebugInfo does more than remove a coordinate line. When it is true, the F3+B bounding-box shortcut and F3+G chunk-border shortcut are disabled as well. If those shortcuts stopped working at the same time that coordinates disappeared, the gamerule is a strong candidate.

One guide may describe the rule as hiding coordinates outright. More precisely, it reduces the lines in the debug screen; the practical result is that the block-level player coordinate line is not available while the rule is enabled.

4. Account for the Java 1.21.9 debug-screen change

Java 1.21.9, beginning with snapshot 25w31a, changed the debug screen so a section-relative line can appear even when reducedDebugInfo is not enabled. That line should not be confused with the full block-level player coordinate entry. If a server has recently upgraded and the layout looks different, compare the labels and values rather than assuming that every visible position line is the same coordinate readout.

When F3 itself does not appear

  • Try Fn+F3 if pressing F3 changes volume, brightness, or another hardware control.
  • Check whether another application or keyboard utility is intercepting the function key.
  • Make sure the game window has focus before pressing the shortcut.
  • If F3 opens but has too few lines, investigate reducedDebugInfo rather than the keyboard.
  • If you are an administrator and the gamerule command is rejected, check the exact server version and the accepted spelling before changing any other settings.

Show coordinates on a Bedrock Edition server

Enable Show Coordinates in world or game settings

Bedrock displays coordinates as part of the HUD rather than in a debug screen. The setting is called Show Coordinates. In a world you control, open the pause menu, go to Settings, open the Game or world-options area, and turn on Show Coordinates. Label placement varies slightly by platform and release, so use the setting search or the world-options section if the menu is arranged differently.

Players can also enable the option in their in-game settings when the server or world permits the player-facing setting. Unlike many gameplay cheats, the Bedrock showcoordinates gamerule is available without cheats. Enabling the setting does not require opening a Java-style debug screen.

Enable it with the Bedrock gamerule

A server administrator can run:

/gamerule showcoordinates true

  1. Open the server console or use chat with the administrator permission required by that server.
  2. Enter the gamerule command and set its value to true.
  3. Return to the game HUD and check for the coordinate display.

The rule is Bedrock-only and defaults to true in the documented behavior. If coordinates are missing on a new or reset world, first check whether a world setting or administrator changed it to false.

Bedrock gamerule names are shown in both showcoordinates and showCoordinates forms in different references. Gamerule names are generally treated without regard to letter case, but that behavior was not independently verified for every Bedrock server release. If the command is rejected, use the spelling offered by your server’s command completion and confirm the server version.

Where the Bedrock display appears

The coordinates appear in a HUD box while the option is enabled. Secondary guides often describe a position near the upper-left, but exact placement can vary with the Bedrock release, device, screen layout, and other HUD elements. The important test is whether the box remains visible during normal play and updates as you move.

Administrator workflow for a multiplayer server

Use the workflow for the edition that is actually running on the server. A player-level setting and a server gamerule are separate controls, so changing one does not translate the other.

Java server checklist

  1. Confirm that the server is Java Edition and identify its version.
  2. Ask the affected player to press F3 or Fn+F3.
  3. If the debug screen is present but the block-level XYZ line is absent, inspect the reduced-debug gamerule.
  4. From the console or with operator permission, run /gamerule reducedDebugInfo false, checking the version’s accepted spelling if necessary.
  5. Have the player close and reopen the F3 overlay and test F3+B or F3+G only after the coordinate line is restored.

Bedrock server checklist

  1. Confirm that the server and the player are using Bedrock Edition.
  2. Check the world or game setting named Show Coordinates.
  3. If an administrator controls the world, run /gamerule showcoordinates true from an authorized account or the server console.
  4. If the command is unknown, try the capitalization supplied by command completion and verify the Bedrock release.
  5. Ask the player to return to normal gameplay and check the HUD instead of looking for an F3 screen.

Troubleshoot missing coordinates

Symptom Likely cause Action
Pressing F3 does nothing in Java. The function key is being used as a hardware shortcut or the game window lacks focus. Focus the game and try Fn+F3; check keyboard utilities that intercept function keys.
F3 opens, but the XYZ line is missing. reducedDebugInfo is enabled. Ask an operator to run /gamerule reducedDebugInfo false, or verify the version’s alternate spelling if the command is rejected.
F3+B and F3+G also fail. The reduced-debug rule is limiting debug features. Restore the full debug screen with the Java gamerule.
Only a different position or section line is visible after a Java update. The Java 1.21.9 debug-screen layout change. Distinguish the section-relative line from the full block-level player coordinate entry.
Bedrock has no coordinate box. Show Coordinates is off in the world or game settings. Enable the setting, or ask an administrator to run /gamerule showcoordinates true.
The Bedrock command says the gamerule is unknown. Wrong edition, version-specific spelling, or an unsupported command context. Confirm Bedrock is running, use command completion, and check whether the server expects showcoordinates or showCoordinates.
The command is understood but cannot be executed. The account lacks operator or console permission. Have the server owner or an authorized administrator run it.
A player can see coordinates in one world but not another. The relevant gamerule or world option differs between worlds. Apply the setting to the world where the player is currently connected.

What the coordinate readout is useful for

Coordinates give every player a compact way to record a location, communicate where a base or portal is, and return to a marked point. Record all three values exactly as displayed rather than copying only the vertical value. When sharing a location with other players, state the edition and the server world as well; Java’s debug readout and Bedrock’s HUD are different interfaces, and a location is meaningful only in the world where it was recorded.

The Java readout is temporary: it is visible while the debug overlay is open. Bedrock’s display is designed to remain on the HUD while Show Coordinates is enabled. If you need an always-visible display in Java, the vanilla behavior covered here does not provide a persistent HUD box; this guide therefore does not prescribe an unverified plugin or mod.

Version and spelling cautions

  • Java: reducedDebugInfo was introduced in Java 1.8 (snapshot 14w29a). Recent releases may present additional debug lines, including the Java 1.21.9 change.
  • Bedrock: showcoordinates is the documented gamerule name and is described as enabled by default, but capitalization may appear differently in references and command interfaces.
  • Commands: Gamerules are version-sensitive. If autocomplete does not offer the spelling shown here, use the exact name offered by the server rather than assuming that a Java command works on Bedrock or vice versa.
  • Permissions: A setting visible to players is not the same as permission to change a server gamerule. Use the server console or an authorized operator account for administrative changes.

Quick decision guide

  1. If the server is Java, press F3 (or Fn+F3) and read the XYZ entry.
  2. If Java F3 is open but the coordinate line is absent, have an administrator disable reducedDebugInfo.
  3. If the server is Bedrock, enable Show Coordinates in settings or run /gamerule showcoordinates true with administrator permission.
  4. If a command fails, verify the edition, version, spelling, and account permissions before changing anything else.
