To shop safely on a marketplace, check the marketplace’s refund and dispute rules, investigate the seller and the specific listing, pay through the platform using a protected method, and keep a record of the transaction. These checks help you make a better-informed decision; they cannot guarantee that a seller or item is safe. Marketplace protections differ, and a high rating or a legal disclosure is not proof that a particular offer is trustworthy.
How to check if a marketplace seller is legit
There is no single rating, badge, or disclosure that conclusively establishes that a seller is legitimate. Treat verification as a sequence of checks: first understand what the marketplace will do if something goes wrong, then assess the seller, inspect the offer, and choose a payment route that preserves any applicable protections.
For U.S. shoppers, the Federal Trade Commission’s November 2024 guidance, Buying From an Online Marketplace, recommends checking the marketplace and seller, reviewing the listing and payment options, and keeping transaction records. The steps below turn that advice into a practical order of operations. Policies can change, so consult the current marketplace terms and payment-provider rules for the transaction you are considering.

1. Understand what the marketplace actually protects
Before buying, find the marketplace’s current rules for returns, refunds, disputes, and claims. Do not assume that a familiar brand name or a checkout page means the marketplace itself will resolve every problem. Some operators do not handle disputes between buyers and sellers, and platform programs may cover only certain sellers, items, payment methods, or types of loss.

Look for answers to these questions in the relevant policy, not just a general help page:
- Who handles a complaint: the marketplace, the seller, or both?
- Does the stated buyer-protection program apply to this seller and this item?
- What return window and claim deadline apply, and when does each clock start?
- Are return shipping charges, restocking costs, or other conditions described?
- Does the platform require you to contact the seller or take another step before opening a claim?
- Which payment methods preserve the platform’s protections?
Read the policy for the particular transaction and save a copy or screenshot if practical. A general promise of “buyer protection” is less useful than the eligibility conditions, exclusions, and deadlines that determine whether you can use it.
Compare marketplaces on the terms that matter
If the same product is available on several sites, compare the practical protections rather than choosing only by price. Check who handles a refund, whether the seller and item qualify for coverage, whether payment and messaging remain inside the marketplace, and how recent and detailed the seller feedback is. Also compare return windows, shipping charges, and claim deadlines. A lower listing price can be a poor bargain if shipping is high, returns are restricted, or the dispute process is unclear.

For example, eBay’s guidance says an off-eBay purchase is not covered by its Money Back Guarantee. That statement describes eBay’s policy; another platform may have different eligibility rules, exclusions, or deadlines. Open the current policy from the marketplace where you will actually pay.
2. Evaluate the seller beyond the star score
A rating is a summary, not a verification certificate. Read recent feedback and detailed comments, paying attention to whether buyers describe the same kind of item and service you are considering. A large number of old reviews may tell you less about current performance than recent, specific comments.
- Check the seller’s feedback history and the dates of the comments.
- Look for descriptions of shipping, packaging, item condition, and how the seller handled a problem.
- Notice whether the feedback appears to relate to this seller and the relevant product category.
- Be cautious about comments that are unusually generic, repetitive, or focused on something unrelated to the offer.
- Consider whether reviews may have been incentivized or manipulated; the FTC’s guidance on online reviews discusses practices that can undermine review integrity.
Look for a seller identity you can understand: a displayed business name, contact route, location where supplied, and a history that is consistent with the goods being offered. Missing contact information is a reason to pause and ask the marketplace how it identifies sellers, not proof by itself that the seller is fraudulent. Ask material questions through the site’s messaging system and judge whether the answers are specific, consistent with the listing, and preserved in the transaction record.
Do not treat a few negative reviews as automatic proof of fraud, or a strong average as proof of safety. Use the content and recency of reviews as signals alongside the listing, seller information, and platform rules. A pattern of complaints about counterfeit goods, materially different condition, non-delivery, or pressure to pay elsewhere deserves more weight than an isolated complaint about a minor delay.

3. Inspect the exact listing and offer
Assess the item you would actually receive rather than relying on a product title or a polished catalog image. Compare the written description with the photos, and check that condition, included accessories, quantity, and any known defects are clear. For used, refurbished, collectible, or otherwise condition-sensitive goods, actual photographs of the offered item are more informative than generic stock images.
- Read the full description, including condition and any exclusions.
- Check whether photographs show the specific item and whether they agree with the description.
- Review shipping costs, estimated delivery information, and return terms before checkout.
- Compare the offer with other listings for the same or a similar item.
- Pause over a very low price on an expensive, scarce, or hard-to-find product. It is a warning sign worth investigating, not proof by itself that the listing is fraudulent.
Check the quantity and version carefully. A title may describe a product family while the condition field identifies an open-box, used, or incomplete unit. Confirm whether batteries, chargers, manuals, serial-number information, or pictured accessories are included when those details affect value or safety. Make sure the displayed delivery date and shipping charge are for your address, not merely a general estimate.
On eBay specifically, its seller-fraud guidance flags short-duration listings, unusually low prices for high-value or scarce goods, and attempts to move contact or payment away from eBay. Those are examples of that platform’s guidance, not a universal rule that every short listing or bargain is fraudulent.
4. Ask questions and keep the answers on-platform
If a material detail is missing, ask the seller through the marketplace’s messaging system before paying. For example, ask for clarification about an item’s condition, whether a pictured accessory is included, or how the seller handles returns. Keep the response in the platform’s written record so it can be reviewed if the item later differs from what was represented.
Be wary if the seller avoids a straightforward question, changes the terms after you ask, or insists on moving the conversation to personal email or text. Off-platform communication can make it harder to document what was promised and may undermine the marketplace’s ability to help. Never let urgency substitute for an answer: a countdown, claim that another buyer is waiting, or demand for immediate payment is a reason to slow down and reread the terms.
5. Pay in a way that preserves recourse
Complete payment through the marketplace’s checkout and use a method with applicable purchase protections. The FTC recommends safer methods such as credit cards or a secure online payment system that offers buyer protections. A credit card can carry legal protections, but rights and eligibility depend on the transaction and issuer terms; it does not guarantee reimbursement or eliminate marketplace risk.
Before confirming payment, verify the final total, seller name, shipping charge, taxes shown by the platform, and the delivery address. Keep the order confirmation and any payment reference. If a seller sends a new link or invoice that bypasses the marketplace checkout, stop and compare it with the order page; a familiar logo or HTTPS address does not establish that the destination is legitimate.

Do not agree to pay by gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, prepaid card, or another hard-to-reverse route at a seller’s request. A demand to pay outside the marketplace is a warning sign: it can remove platform protections and leave you with fewer ways to recover funds. eBay states that purchases made off eBay are not covered by its Money Back Guarantee. That is eBay’s specific policy, so check the current rules for any other marketplace rather than assuming the same terms apply.

HTTPS in a website address means the connection is encrypted; it does not establish that the site or seller is legitimate. The FTC makes this distinction in its consumer marketplace guidance. Encryption is a baseline security feature, not a substitute for checking the operator, offer, and payment process.
6. Know what U.S. seller-verification law does—and does not—tell you
The U.S. INFORM Consumers Act adds transparency requirements for certain high-volume sellers on covered online marketplaces. Under FTC guidance, the general high-volume threshold includes at least 200 separate sales or transactions of new or unused consumer products and at least $5,000 in gross revenue on that marketplace during a continuous 12-month period within the preceding 24 months. The FTC also describes specified listing or order-confirmation disclosures for qualifying sellers with at least $20,000 in annual gross revenue on that marketplace.
These thresholds concern activity on the marketplace and statutory definitions matter. They are not a rule that every frequent seller, private seller, or marketplace worldwide must meet. A seller can fall outside the covered category and still be honest, while a covered seller can still list a defective, counterfeit, or misrepresented product.
The requirements include collecting and verifying specified seller information, keeping information current, making certain disclosures for qualifying sellers, and providing a way to report suspicious activity. Coverage, exceptions, and the details of a platform’s implementation matter; the thresholds are not a global rule and do not apply to every seller or marketplace.
The FTC’s Informing Businesses about the INFORM Consumers Act guidance explains the standard for verification this way: “Although the law doesn’t list specific verification steps, the methods the online marketplace chooses must enable it ‘to reliably determine that any information and documents provided are valid, corresponding to the seller or an individual acting on the seller’s behalf, not misappropriated, and not falsified.’”
These rules are a transparency layer, not an endorsement by the government or a guarantee about an item, seller, or transaction. A disclosure does not replace your own checks, and the absence of a particular disclosure does not by itself establish that a seller is fraudulent. For a legal question about coverage or a current platform process, consult the statute and the marketplace’s current implementation details.

7. Check product safety separately when it matters
Seller legitimacy and product safety are different questions. A seller may be responsive and have positive feedback while an item still presents a safety risk. For products where safety is important—especially products with warnings, regulated markings, or a recall history—verify the product information independently rather than relying on the seller’s rating.
For shoppers in the UK, the Department for Business and Trade’s 2026 leaflet, Shopping safely on online marketplaces, advises checking that descriptions and warnings are clear, looking for applicable UKCA or CE markings, and checking recall information. These are UK-context checks; UKCA and CE markings are not universal requirements for all goods or jurisdictions. Confirm which requirements apply to the product and where it is being sold.
Do not assume a marking, photograph of a marking, or seller statement settles every safety question. Check that the mark is applicable to the product category and that warnings, instructions, and model information match the item offered. If a recall database or manufacturer notice identifies the model, compare the listing’s model and batch details where available.
8. Keep evidence and respond quickly if something goes wrong
Save the listing and its photos, the stated price and condition, checkout confirmation, receipt, tracking details, and messages with the seller. These records help you compare what was offered with what arrived and explain the problem to the seller, marketplace, or payment provider. Save them before the listing changes or disappears.
- Document the issue promptly. Save screenshots and take clear photos if the item is damaged, materially different from the listing, or missing.
- Contact the seller through the marketplace and describe the problem clearly, including what resolution you are requesting.
- If it is not resolved, use the marketplace’s dispute or claim process before its deadline. Follow any required steps and keep copies of what you submit.
- If appropriate, contact your card issuer or payment provider about a dispute. Their rules and deadlines are separate from the marketplace’s process.
- Report suspected fraud to the relevant consumer-protection authority. In the U.S., the FTC’s marketplace guidance explains consumer reporting options.
For an order that never arrives, arrives late, or is materially misrepresented, act promptly rather than waiting until a platform or payment deadline passes. A complaint, report, or charge dispute does not guarantee a refund; the outcome depends on the facts, the applicable policy, and the payment provider’s rules.

Why these checks are worth doing
The FTC reported more than 86,000 online-shopping problem reports in 2019 and almost $420 million in reported losses related to online shopping since 2015, as described in a July 2020 alert. These are historical figures reported at that time, not a current estimate of losses or a measure of the odds that any individual marketplace transaction will go wrong. They do show why preserving evidence and understanding the remedy process before paying matters.

What should I look for before buying from a third-party seller?
Confirm who handles disputes, whether the item and seller qualify for buyer protection, the claim deadline, and the return conditions. Inspect item-specific photos and the full condition description, investigate unusually low prices, and use a payment method with applicable protections.
Is a high seller rating enough?
No. Ratings can be old, generic, unrelated to the product, incentivized, or manipulated. Read recent comments about shipping, condition, packaging, and problem resolution, and weigh them with the listing and marketplace policies.
What payment methods should I avoid on a marketplace?
Avoid gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, prepaid cards, and other hard-to-reverse methods when a seller requests them. Do not move payment to personal email, text, or another site. You can also ask your card issuer or payment provider about a dispute and report suspected fraud to the appropriate authority. No refund or chargeback result is guaranteed.
The Bottom Line
Marketplace safety comes from several checks used together: understand the platform’s actual protections, read the seller’s recent feedback, inspect the exact offer, keep communication and payment on-platform, and save records. Treat unusually low prices, pressure to move off-platform, and hard-to-reverse payment requests as reasons to stop and investigate. These steps reduce avoidable risk, but they cannot guarantee a safe seller, product, or outcome.
