The safest way to shop an online sale is to verify the exact website and seller before you pay, compare the complete delivered price, read the sale-item terms, and use a payment method that gives you a practical dispute route. HTTPS only encrypts the connection; it does not prove that the retailer is genuine.
This guide reflects U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) consumer guidance. Shipping rules, card-dispute rights, marketplace protections, and reporting procedures can differ outside the United States.
How can I tell if an online sale website is fake?
Begin with the destination, not the advertisement. A paid search result or social-media ad can use a familiar company name while sending you to a different operator. The FTC warns that scammers may buy search ads containing another business’s name or show a fraudulent phone number or website. Type a retailer’s web address yourself when you already know it. If you do not, confirm the address through unpaid search results and other independent sources before entering account or payment details.
The FTC puts it plainly: “Scammers sometimes use paid search results to trick you.” That warning, published in its April 2025 consumer alert, means the first result is not automatically the official store. When an ad offers a well-known product at an unusually low price, search both the seller’s name and the exact URL shown in the browser. Add terms such as review, complaint, or scam. This is not a pass-or-fail test: a clean search does not certify a store, and a complaint may concern a different business with a similar name. Inspect the domain and contact details
Read the entire domain name character by character. Look for misspellings, extra words, unfamiliar endings, or a domain that has no clear connection to the merchant named in the ad. Check whether the site supplies a physical or mailing address, a working customer-service channel, and terms that identify the legal seller. A polished logo and copied product photos are not proof that the operator is authorized.
Make sure the contact information is consistent throughout the site. A phone number in an ad that differs from the number in the store’s terms, or a return address that identifies an unrelated business, deserves a pause. Do not rely on a phone number or link supplied only by the ad; confirm it through an independent result or a known retailer page.
If you are buying through a marketplace, identify the actual seller as well as the marketplace. The marketplace may process payment while the individual seller controls fulfillment, returns, or item condition. Those roles determine whom you must contact when something goes wrong.

No. HTTPS encrypts data moving between your browser and the site, which is important when you transmit a password or payment information, but a fraudulent store can obtain the same encryption. The FTC states: “The ‘s’ after http means the site is encrypted — but it doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate site.” Read the FTC’s Online Shopping guidance for the distinction.
Treat the padlock and https:// as a minimum technical safeguard, not an identity check. A secure connection to the wrong domain is still a secure connection to the wrong seller. Your decision should also account for the domain, merchant identity, item description, full price, delivery promise, return rules, and payment method.
How do I check a seller before I buy?
Evaluate independent feedback carefully
Search the company or seller name with “complaint,” “review,” and “scam,” then read recent comments from more than one source. Star ratings alone are weak evidence because reviews can be fabricated, incentivized, misleading, or posted by malicious competitors. Look for specific details about delivery, item condition, refunds, and customer-service responses rather than a large average score.

Ask a reasonable pre-sale question if the listing leaves an important detail unclear. A seller who cannot explain the model, condition, warranty, or delivery arrangement is a risk. Keep the question and the reply; they may matter if the item differs from what was promised.
Confirm what the listing actually offers
Compare the model number, size, color, included accessories, condition, and photos with the manufacturer’s description or another established seller. Stock photos do not demonstrate that the seller possesses the item or that the shipped item will match the picture. Words such as refurbished, used, as is, and close-out can describe a product that is not new and may carry different warranty or return terms.
On a marketplace, read the listing and the seller profile together. Determine whether the item is shipped by the marketplace, the seller, or a third party, and find the stated process for refunds and disputes. The FTC’s Buying From an Online Marketplace guidance explains why those details matter.
Is this deal too good to be true?
A low headline price is meaningful only after you compare the same product and calculate the total cost. Use the manufacturer’s model number or an exact identifier so that you do not compare a new item with a used, incomplete, regional, or incompatible version.

An unusually low price on an expensive brand-name product can indicate a counterfeit or stolen item; it is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself. Check whether the store requires an additional purchase, membership, or different condition to obtain the advertised price. Also ask whether the retailer offers a price match or will refund the difference if its own price falls after you buy. These terms should be clear before checkout, not inferred from a banner.

What sale terms should I read before ordering?
Returns, refunds, and clearance exceptions
Open the return policy for the exact item, not only the store’s general policy. Record the number of days you have, the condition required for a return, who pays postage, whether a restocking fee applies, and whether clearance, final-sale, personalized, or opened products are excluded. If a marketplace has a buyer-protection program, confirm that the particular seller and item qualify and note the claim deadline.

Find out how a refund is issued and how long processing normally takes. A store may offer store credit instead of money back, or require you to obtain a return authorization before shipping. Save those requirements before you place the order. If the sale page and the general policy conflict, save both pages and ask the seller which terms govern the specific item.
Shipping promises in the United States
A seller must ship within the time promised in its advertising. When no shipping time is promised, the FTC’s online-shopping guidance says the seller generally must ship within 30 days after receiving your name, address, and payment or permission to charge. This is U.S. guidance; it is not a universal deadline. If the seller cannot meet the promised time, keep its notice and follow the options described in the seller’s terms and applicable FTC guidance rather than accepting an unexplained delay.
Save the promised date as it appeared when you ordered, not merely the later tracking estimate. A change in the listing or a newly printed shipping label does not erase the original promise. If timing matters for a gift or event, treat an uncertain delivery window as part of the price you are paying for the deal.
Which payment method gives me the most protection?
The FTC recommends using a credit card when possible because it can provide a route to dispute certain billing errors. A seller that insists on a hard-to-recover method is a serious warning sign. The FTC’s November 2025 holiday alert says: “And if the seller says you can only pay with a gift card, wire transfer, payment app, or cryptocurrency, it’s probably a scam.”

On a marketplace, do not move the conversation or payment outside the platform to obtain a discount or satisfy a seller’s request. Leaving the approved checkout can eliminate the marketplace’s dispute coverage. - the product description, model number, condition, photos, and advertised price;
- shipping, handling, tax, and other charges;
- the promised shipping date and tracking information;
- the return, refund, warranty, and restocking terms;
- the confirmation number, order date, and total amount;
- your payment statement or receipt; and
- messages with the seller, marketplace, or carrier.
Capture the offer and terms as they appeared when you ordered. A seller can later change a listing, remove a sale page, or revise a policy. Keeping the original evidence makes it easier to explain the problem to the seller, marketplace, card issuer, or investigators. Keep records in one place and note the dates of every call, email, case number, and promised response.
A five-minute safety check before checkout
Use this short pause before entering payment details:
- Reconfirm the route. Compare the address in the browser with the retailer address you typed or independently verified. Do not assume an ad, sponsored result, logo, or padlock identifies the real store.
- Name the merchant. Write down the legal seller, marketplace, and fulfillment party. Make sure you know who handles returns and disputes.
- Match the item. Check the exact model number, condition, included equipment, and any limitation hidden in the description or photo captions.
- Calculate the final obligation. Add shipping, handling, taxes, and fees. Check for a required add-on, membership, or different condition behind the headline price.
- Read the exit terms. Confirm delivery timing, the return window, return postage, restocking fees, sale exceptions, refund form, and any marketplace claim deadline.
- Choose recourse. Use a credit card when possible, keep marketplace payment on-platform, and stop if the seller demands a gift card, wire, payment app, or cryptocurrency.
- Save proof. Capture the offer, terms, confirmation, and seller communications before completing the order.
If you cannot answer one of these questions, postpone the purchase. A discount is not a reason to accept an unknown seller, unclear condition, or payment route that is difficult to reverse.

- Check the promised date and tracking. Compare the current status with the delivery promise you saved. A tracking label is not proof that the package was actually handed to a carrier.
- Contact the seller in writing. State the order number, the promised date, and the remedy you want. Keep the message and any reply.
- Use the marketplace process. If the purchase was made through a marketplace, open its buyer-protection or item-not-received case within the stated deadline. Keep payment inside the platform’s records.
- Contact the card issuer promptly. For certain billing errors, including merchandise not received, a duplicate charge, or a wrong or defective item, the FTC’s online-shopping page describes a written-notice period of 60 days for the stated billing-error protections. Eligibility and procedures depend on the transaction and applicable rules, so follow your issuer’s instructions and do not wait for the deadline.
- Report suspected fraud. If the seller disappears, misrepresented the item, or used a deceptive site, report the matter at ReportFraud.ftc.gov after preserving your records.
The same sequence applies when an item arrives damaged, counterfeit-looking, materially different, or missing parts: document the condition immediately, contact the seller or marketplace, and use an eligible card dispute when the seller does not resolve the problem. Do not send a return to an address supplied in a suspicious message until you have confirmed the authorized return instructions.

Proceed only when the answers line up: you reached the site through a verified route; the domain and merchant identity make sense; independent feedback does not reveal unresolved patterns; the model and condition match what you need; the total price includes every charge; delivery and return terms are written; and the payment route leaves a realistic path to seek help. If one of those answers is missing, pause and verify it rather than allowing a discount or a countdown to make the decision for you.
No single badge, review score, or browser indicator proves that a store is honest. Safety comes from checking the seller, understanding the complete obligation, preserving evidence, and choosing a payment method that does not leave you powerless when the transaction fails.
