There is no single setting that turns off personalized product recommendations everywhere. To reduce them, check the controls for each retailer, search service, browser, and app you use. A setting may stop past activity from shaping future suggestions without deleting that activity or preventing contextual results, ads, or other data collection.
First, identify which recommendations you want to change
“Recommendations” can mean several different things. A retailer may suggest products on its own website or app; a search service may personalize shopping listings; and advertising systems may show product ads on other websites or apps. These systems can have separate controls, even when they seem to be responding to the same shopping activity.
Before changing settings, note where the suggestions appear. Recommendations on a store’s site are usually controlled by that retailer. Personalized shopping results may be governed by the search service account or settings. Ads displayed elsewhere can involve browser or advertising controls, participating-advertiser opt-outs, and other data sources. Changing one setting does not necessarily affect the others.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It also helps to distinguish personalization from relevance. A service can rank items based on the words in your current search, your selected filters, or other context even when it is not using your past behavior to personalize results. Turning off personalization therefore does not promise identical results for every person or remove all product suggestions.

A useful first step is to make a short list of where the suggestions occur: a particular retailer’s homepage, a shopping tab in a search service, the retailer’s app, or ads on unrelated sites. Then match each location to its likely control. If the same product appears in several places, that does not prove one system is responsible for all of them; several services may use different signals and settings.
Use this sequence to reduce personalization
- Check the retailer first. Look in the store’s account, privacy, advertising, or personalization settings. If the store offers an opt-out, read its stated scope: it may apply only to the current browser and device, or require separate action in the app.
- Check the search service. If shopping listings appear in a search service, look for its shopping or personalization controls. A retailer’s setting does not necessarily change search results shown outside its site.
- Review browser settings. A browser may let you control whether browsing activity is saved and used to personalize services. This is distinct from a retailer’s own account controls and may not govern activity collected directly by a site.
- Decide separately whether to delete or pause saved activity. Turning off a personalization setting is not necessarily the same as pausing history collection or deleting existing account activity. Use the relevant activity-management controls if you want to change stored history too.
- Repeat on each device and app you use. A website opt-out may not carry over to the retailer’s app, another browser, or another device. Check the scope described by the provider rather than assuming settings are shared.
After each change, note which service and device you changed it on. This makes it easier to spot a remaining source of recommendations rather than repeating the same action in the wrong place. If a setting is hard to find, use the provider’s current help page or search within its settings for terms such as “personalization,” “recommendations,” or “browsing activity.” Providers can move or rename controls, so rely on the current description, not an old menu path.
Retailer controls: start with the store where you shop
Retailers can use information associated with your account or activity on their own services to tailor product suggestions. Their settings are not standardized: one retailer may provide an opt-out, another may let you edit the information used for recommendations, and another may not document a general recommendations-off control.
When you find a retailer control, read what it says it changes and where it applies. An opt-out for a website may not apply to a signed-in app session, and an input-editing feature may change the signals used for suggestions without turning recommendations off. A store’s control also should not be assumed to affect shopping results on a separate search service or advertisements delivered by another provider.
Nordstrom: a website opt-out may not cover the app
Nordstrom documents an opt-out intended to limit personalized shopping experiences and product recommendations. Its website control applies to the browser and device being used. If you use the Nordstrom app, handle its settings separately; changing the website setting alone does not establish that app personalization is also disabled.
This is a useful example of why scope matters, not a universal procedure for other stores. Look for the retailer’s current privacy or opt-out information and follow the instructions it provides for the specific site or app you use. The available controls and their legal scope can vary by location and interface.
If you shop while signed out as well as while signed in, check the language of the opt-out rather than assuming it covers both situations. Nordstrom’s described website control is tied to the browser and device in use; it is not a general setting for every device, account, or retailer. If you later switch browsers or use the app, revisit the relevant controls there.
Amazon: review inputs with About You
Amazon’s About You feature lets customers review and edit inputs used for personalization. The company identifies purchase history, Alexa shopping conversations, reviews, Lists, and searches among the information that can be managed there. Editing those inputs can help adjust what informs personalization, but the feature is not evidence of a universal switch that turns off every recommendation.

If your goal is to change what a retailer uses, an input-review tool and a full opt-out are different outcomes. Check what the specific control says it changes, and do not assume that removing or editing one item deletes other account history or stops other collection.
About You is especially useful if a suggestion seems tied to a particular interest or past interaction: it gives you a place to inspect and edit named categories of inputs. But reviewing those inputs is not the same as deleting all purchase records, erasing every signal the retailer may use, or disabling recommendations throughout Amazon. Keep the goal specific: adjust listed inputs, manage account history where separate controls exist, or look for an opt-out if the retailer documents one.
Search shopping listings and results: check the platform setting
Google Shopping: look for Personalized Recommendations
Google Shopping Help describes a Personalized Recommendations setting under Search services. Google says this setting controls the use of data for more personalized experiences. Its shopping listings may also use your current search terms, and Google notes that its settings are being updated. The setting name or its location may therefore change as the interface evolves.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFind the current Google Shopping Help instructions from the account or service you use, then check that the control is specifically for shopping personalization. Do not assume that a change to a general Google Search setting automatically changes every Shopping feature, or that it affects recommendations on retailer websites.
The practical distinction is between using past data to tailor a shopping experience and returning listings relevant to the query you just entered. Google says shopping listings can still reflect current search terms. So, after changing the setting, you may still see products related to your query; that alone does not show that the setting failed.
Google Search: personalization is not the same as stored activity
Google Search Help distinguishes personalization from other factors that can shape results, including location, language, device, and the current query. These contextual signals may still affect what appears after personalization is disabled. Search settings also do not automatically pause or delete stored account activity.
If you want both less personalization and less retained activity, treat those as separate tasks: change the relevant personalization control, then review the account’s activity-management options for pausing or deleting history. A change to one does not imply the other has happened.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThink of this as two decisions: whether previously collected activity should influence future Search results, and whether activity should continue to be stored or be removed. A setting about personalization answers the first question only unless its description explicitly says otherwise. Likewise, pausing or deleting account activity does not necessarily change a retailer’s own recommendation settings.

Browser controls: limit the use of browsing activity
Browser settings can address a different layer from retailer and search-account controls. Microsoft documents an Edge setting for whether browsing activity is saved and used to personalize Microsoft experiences, including shopping recommendations. In Edge, search Settings for the browsing-activity personalization control and review its current wording before changing it; menu labels and paths can shift across versions.
Microsoft says that if you stop sharing this data, it will no longer collect and use your browsing activity for personalization of advertising or experiences from that point forward. That statement concerns the described use of Edge browsing activity; it should not be read as a promise that every site stops collecting information or that all other forms of advertising personalization stop.
“From that point forward” is important: the described setting concerns subsequent use of Edge browsing activity. It does not, by itself, say that existing account activity is deleted. If you want to manage saved activity as well, look for the separate activity controls relevant to the account or service involved.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Browser privacy settings can also include controls for cookies and browsing history. The FTC recommends reviewing those settings and deleting cookies or history when appropriate. Deleting local browser data may affect saved site preferences or sign-ins, so consider whether you want that trade-off before clearing it. It is not a substitute for changing a retailer or account setting that governs activity stored by that provider.
Cookies and history have practical effects as well as privacy implications. Clearing them may sign you out or remove site preferences stored in that browser. If you do clear them, you may need to revisit websites and set preferences again. But clearing local data should not be confused with deleting a provider’s account records, and it does not replace an explicit account-level preference when one is available.
Private browsing and ad opt-outs: what they can and cannot do
Private browsing is mainly a way to limit what is saved locally by the browser after a session. The FTC cautions that private browsing does not block websites from seeing online activity. It should not be treated as anonymity or as a universal way to prevent recommendation systems from receiving information.
Private mode may be useful when you do not want a browsing session retained in the browser’s local history, depending on the browser’s behavior. It is not a substitute for signing out, changing account settings, or opting out with a provider. If you sign in to a retailer during a private session, that provider can still associate activity with the account according to its practices.
Recommended Free Tools
Ads may still appear after you disable personalization. An ad can be selected using context such as the page you are viewing, or may be served through a system unaffected by the setting you changed. The FTC also recommends using participating-advertiser opt-out tools where available. Such tools concern participating advertisers and do not replace controls at individual retailers, search services, or browsers.

An opt-out can change how a participating advertiser selects ads without eliminating the ad slot or the ad itself. You may continue to see shopping ads because advertising remains active or because the selection is contextual. If your main concern is product recommendations within a store, an advertiser opt-out may not address that store’s own recommendation feature.
Use the tool that matches the problem: retailer settings for a store’s own suggestions, search settings for search shopping experiences, browser settings for the specified browser activity, and advertiser opt-outs for participating ad systems. None of these should be assumed to stop all collection or all ads.
What each control generally affects
| Control or example | Personalization it addresses | Scope established by the provider | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nordstrom opt-out | Personalized shopping experiences and product recommendations | Website control applies to the browser and device in use; app settings are separate | That the app or other retailers are covered |
| Amazon About You | Inputs used for Amazon personalization | Review and edit inputs such as purchases, Alexa shopping conversations, reviews, Lists, and searches | A universal recommendations-off switch |
| Google Shopping Personalized Recommendations | Data used for more personalized shopping experiences | A Search services setting; Google says settings are being updated | That current search terms or every other ranking factor are ignored |
| Google Search personalization controls | Personalization of Google Search results | Search settings and account activity controls are distinct | Automatic pausing or deletion of stored activity, or removal of contextual factors |
| Microsoft Edge browsing-activity setting | Use of Edge browsing activity to personalize Microsoft experiences, including shopping recommendations | Applies to the described use of browsing activity from the point sharing is stopped | That websites or unrelated services stop collecting or using other data |
| Private browsing | Local browser history after the session, depending on browser behavior | Browser session on the device | Blocking websites from seeing activity or preventing all tracking |
| Participating-advertiser opt-outs | Personalized ads from participating advertisers | Participating advertisers covered by the relevant tool | Control of every retailer, ad system, or recommendation engine |
The table is a scope comparison, not a ranking of which option is strongest. Each control addresses a different object: a retailer experience, search results, browser activity, local history, or ads from participating companies. A meaningful comparison asks four questions: what is being personalized, where the setting applies, whether it changes past activity or future use, and what remains afterward.
Choose the right combination for your goal
- To reduce suggestions on one store: use that retailer’s privacy or personalization control, and check separately whether the app has its own setting.
- To reduce shopping suggestions in search: use the search service’s shopping or personalization control, then review any separate account activity controls if stored history matters to you.
- To limit use of browser activity: review the browser’s stated personalization setting and confirm which data and services it covers.
- To reduce ads based on activity: combine the relevant provider settings with participating-advertiser opt-outs where available; expect that contextual ads may remain.
- To keep less history on a device: review cookie and history controls, understanding that local deletion is different from deleting activity retained in an online account.
For a practical check, make one change at a time and then revisit the same service in the same browser or app. If suggestions remain, consider whether they are based on the current query, a separate account, another device, or an unrelated ad system before concluding the setting had no effect. The available controls do not promise a perfectly generic shopping experience.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes that leave recommendations unchanged
- Changing only one layer. A browser setting does not necessarily control a retailer’s account recommendations, and a retailer’s website opt-out may not cover its app.
- Confusing “off” with “deleted.” Disabling future use for personalization does not necessarily remove previously stored activity. Look for separate pause and delete controls if you want those outcomes.
- Expecting identical results. Current queries and contextual information such as location, language, or device can influence results even without the personalization covered by a setting.
- Expecting ads to disappear. Turning off personalization can change how ads are selected without removing advertising itself.
- Assuming private browsing blocks tracking. It can limit local history saved after a session, but it does not prevent a website from seeing your activity.
- Forgetting another device or app. Repeat the check wherever you shop, especially when a provider describes an opt-out as applying to the current browser and device.
Another common source of confusion is a settings label that sounds broader than its actual scope. “Personalization” may refer to a specific search experience or to a named use of browser activity, not every product suggestion in every service. Read the provider’s description and check whether it says anything about apps, other devices, stored history, or future use.
Keep expectations tied to each setting’s scope
Settings and legal opt-out rights can depend on geography, account availability, app version, and interface changes. Google says its settings are being updated, and provider menus can move or be renamed. Use the current instructions from the relevant provider and read the control’s description before relying on it.
The practical goal is to reduce the specific uses of past behavior that you can control, not to make every shopping result generic or eliminate every form of tracking. Check each service where the recommendation appears, distinguish future personalization from saved history, and treat ads and contextual ranking as separate effects.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop personalized product recommendations?
There is no universal switch. Check the retailer’s privacy or personalization controls, then check the search service and browser settings that apply to the recommendations you see. Repeat on each relevant app and device, and read the stated scope of every control.

Can I turn off shopping recommendations without deleting my history?
Often these are separate choices. A personalization control may limit how past activity is used without pausing or deleting stored activity. Review the provider’s activity-management controls separately if you want to pause or delete history.
Does private browsing stop websites from tracking my shopping?
No. The FTC explains that private browsing may delete local browsing history after a session, but it does not block websites from seeing your online activity. It is not anonymity or a universal tracking opt-out.
Will ads disappear if I turn off personalized recommendations?
Not necessarily. Ads may still appear based on context, such as the page you are viewing, or through systems unaffected by the setting. Participating-advertiser opt-outs can apply to those advertisers, but do not control every retailer or ad system.
Does turning off Google Search personalization remove all shopping context?
No. Google Search results may still reflect context such as your current query, location, language, and device. Search personalization settings also do not automatically pause or delete stored account activity.
Does a Nordstrom website opt-out also apply to its app?
Nordstrom’s documented website control applies to the browser and device in use. App settings must be handled separately, so do not assume a website change covers the app.
Can Amazon About You turn off every recommendation?
About You lets customers review and edit inputs used for personalization, including purchase history, Alexa shopping conversations, reviews, Lists, and searches. It is not evidence of a universal recommendations-off switch.
The Bottom Line
To shop with less personalization, change the setting where each recommendation originates: retailer, search service, browser, or participating-advertiser tool. Then separately manage saved activity if you want it paused or deleted. These steps can reduce specific uses of past behavior, but they do not guarantee generic results, remove every ad, or stop all data collection.
