You can reduce personalized and AI-generated shopping suggestions by switching off recommendation controls in your search or shopping account, then reviewing each retailer’s privacy and cookie choices. To make the result genuinely less personalized, also limit activity signals in your browser and phone settings. These steps do not create a completely neutral internet: current searches, location, language, device type, and a retailer’s own systems can still influence what you see.
Once the controls are set, shop from a specification you wrote yourself. Search for the exact model, size, color, and required features; compare the full delivered cost and seller terms; and independently verify the seller and payment destination before ordering.
What “without AI recommendations” can—and cannot—mean
Online stores and search services use several different systems that are often lumped together as “AI recommendations.” A service may rank results for relevance to your current words, personalize a listing because of earlier activity, generate a product summary, show a reminder about an unfinished purchase, or target an advertisement. Turning off one of these does not automatically disable the others.
The practical goal is therefore less activity-based influence, not a promise that every result will be identical for every shopper. Google says contextual information such as location, language, device type, and the current query may still affect Search after personalized recommendations are disabled. Google Shopping also says current query relevance is the default basis for ranking, while recent activity can inform personalized listings, recommendations, and reminders.

Use the controls below in layers. An account setting affects a service account; a retailer setting affects one merchant; a browser or device setting affects a particular environment. None of these layers automatically erases information already retained in an account.
A quick setup plan
- Turn off the named personalized-recommendation control in the search or shopping account you use.
- Check every retailer’s account, privacy, and cookie controls instead of assuming the search setting applies there.
- Clear old cookies and browsing or search history if you do not want earlier activity used for advertising or personalization.
- Review browser privacy and phone advertising settings on each device and browser you use.
- Use a private window only when you want less local history; it does not hide activity from the websites you visit.
- Shop from a written specification and compare total cost, delivery, returns, seller identity, and payment details yourself.
Turn off personalized recommendations in Google Search
Google’s help documentation names the relevant control Personalized Recommendations. The service is changing its Search settings, so the exact menu appearance can differ by account, region, or date.
When you are signed in
- Open Google Search settings while signed in to the account whose recommendations you want to change.
- Open the area labelled Search services or the equivalent personalization section.
- Find Personalized Recommendations and switch it off.
- Run a new search after the change. If the old page remains open, reload it so you are not judging a previously generated result page.
This switch targets recommendation personalization; it does not pause or delete activity saved in your Google account. If you also want to change retention, open the account’s separate Activity controls and review, delete, or pause the relevant history there. Treat those as a second decision, because deleting history and turning off recommendations do different things.
When you are signed out
Google refers signed-out users to Search customization. Look for that control in Search settings and disable it if it is available in your interface. Signed-out searches can still be affected by the current query, approximate location, language, and device context.
What remains after the change
- Results can still be relevant to the words you just typed.
- Location, language, and device type may still provide contextual signals.
- Sites you open can run their own recommendation or advertising systems.
- Existing account activity is not automatically paused or erased.
Reduce personalization in Google Shopping
Google documents a separate route for Shopping. Its instructions are to sign in, open Personalisation settings, choose Personalized Recommendations under Search services, and turn the control off. Spelling and labels can vary in the interface.
Google Shopping distinguishes ordinary relevance from personalization. The current query is the default basis for listing ranking. Recent searches or other Google activity may additionally inform item recommendations, listing ranking, and reminders. Disabling the recommendation control reduces that activity-based layer but does not make the page independent of your query or context.

Review Shopping activity separately through Google’s Activity controls if you want to inspect or delete stored searches and related records. A recommendation switch is not an activity-retention switch, and changing one does not silently change the other.

Microsoft documents an Edge setting that controls whether browsing activity is saved and used to personalize Edge and Microsoft services, including advertising, search, shopping, and news.
- In Edge, open Settings.
- Select Privacy, search, and services.
- Open the Privacy section.
- Find the control concerning saving and using browsing activity to personalize Edge and Microsoft services, then turn it off.
Microsoft states that browsing activity is not collected for this personalization while you browse in InPrivate or Guest mode. That statement concerns the documented personalization use; it does not mean a website cannot observe activity during an active visit, nor does it control every independent retailer.
Microsoft account advertising controls are separate. An ad-preference switch may not stop collection used for search results or other experiences, so choose the specific Edge privacy control that matches your goal rather than relying on a general advertising page.
Review each retailer’s account and cookie choices
A search-engine setting is not a universal off switch for merchants. A retailer can personalize its home page, search results, recommendations, emails, and reminders using information held in its own account or cookies.

- Recommendation, personalization, or “use my activity” switches.
- Saved searches, recently viewed items, wish lists, and purchase-based suggestions.
- Marketing email and text-message preferences.
- Advertising or data-sharing choices in the privacy center.
- Options to delete browsing history or reset a profile.
Names and locations differ by retailer, so do not assume that a control on one site applies to another. If you shop while signed in, the merchant may connect visits to your account even after you have changed a search-engine preference.

Choose only necessary cookies when offered
Cookie notices commonly offer a choice between cookies necessary for the site to function and additional categories for advertising or other purposes. Selecting only necessary cookies can reduce some activity-based advertising and personalization. It may also remove conveniences such as saved carts or preferences, and the choice may apply only to that browser on that device.
Record what you selected and revisit the notice if the site later changes its categories. A consent choice does not guarantee that a site will show unranked products; it limits particular forms of storage or use described by that merchant.
Limit activity signals in your browser and phone
The Federal Trade Commission says browser privacy controls vary. Clearing cookies and browsing history, and adjusting a phone’s advertising settings, can limit some activity-based advertising. Ads may still appear; the difference is that they may no longer be selected from your browsing history.

Clear local history and cookies
- Use your browser’s privacy or history menu to clear cookies and site data for the retailers and search services you are trying to reset.
- Clear browsing history and, where relevant, search history stored locally.
- Sign out of shopping accounts before testing the result if you do not want the account profile to reattach immediately.
- Repeat the process in every browser and on every device used for shopping.
Clearing local data does not delete records already held by a signed-in service. It also can sign you out, remove saved carts, or reset site preferences, so save order information before clearing anything you may need.
Adjust phone advertising controls
Review the advertising or privacy area in your phone’s system settings and limit ad personalization where the operating system provides that choice. The FTC notes that controls differ between devices and browsers. A setting on one phone does not automatically apply to a tablet, work computer, or another browser profile.
Understand private browsing correctly
A private window is useful for reducing local traces. On some browsers it removes the session’s history, cookies, and form data when all private windows close. It is not a universal recommendation or tracking off switch.

During a private session, the websites you visit can still see activity required to deliver the page. The network operator, employer, school, or other services may also have visibility under their own policies. The FTC summarizes the limitation plainly: private browsing “doesn’t block websites from seeing your online activity.” Use it for a clean local session, not as proof that a merchant or search service cannot observe the visit.

Shop from your own specification instead of a feed
Before opening a shopping site, write down the attributes that decide the purchase. This prevents an attractive recommendation from quietly changing your requirements.
Build a shortlist
- Manufacturer and exact model or part number, when one exists.
- Required size, capacity, color, compatibility, or connection standard.
- Features you must have and features you are willing to omit.
- Maximum delivered price and the date by which you need the item.
- Acceptable seller location, condition, warranty, and return window.
Search using those terms rather than broad lifestyle phrases. If a result page offers an AI-written summary, treat it as a description to verify, not as evidence that the product meets your list.
Compare the full delivered cost

Save the listing, seller name, order confirmation, policies, and important messages. Pages can change after purchase, and a record helps if the delivered item or refund differs from the offer.

Recommendation controls do not protect you from a fraudulent listing. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security warns that AI can produce convincing websites, advertisements, product descriptions, reviews, and customer-service interactions.

Checks to perform before paying
- Confirm the seller’s legal or trading name, physical or mailing address, and working contact details.
- Read the privacy, refund, warranty, and delivery policies on the seller’s own site or listing.
- Compare the offer with multiple independent sources. The FTC advises looking beyond star ratings because reviews can be fake or misleading.
- Check that the checkout domain and payment recipient match the merchant you intended to use.
- Reject requests to pay by an unusual method, gift card, cryptocurrency transfer, or direct transfer outside the official checkout.
- Be cautious when a countdown, scarcity message, or urgent support conversation pressures you to skip verification.
- Use a payment method that offers dispute or other recourse where available.
Keep seller verification separate from product selection. A product can satisfy every specification and still come from an unreliable seller.

Troubleshoot common results
Recommendations still appear after turning off the setting
Check whether you changed the correct account, whether the page was loaded before the change, and whether the recommendation comes from the retailer rather than the search service. Reload, sign out for a test, and inspect the merchant’s own privacy controls. Current-query relevance is expected to remain.
The same suggestions return after clearing cookies
A signed-in account can reconnect your activity, and another browser or device may still contain the old profile. Repeat the review across devices and separate local clearing from account-activity controls.

Private mode removes local traces only after the session ends on browsers that support that behavior. It does not prevent a site from observing the active visit or using information it already has. Use the account, retailer, and device controls instead of treating private mode as a complete opt-out.
Search results became less convenient
Disabling personalization can remove saved preferences and reminders. Keep a manual shortlist, model numbers, and a comparison sheet so you can recover the convenience without handing the decision back to an algorithm.
A repeatable independent-shopping workflow
- Define: write the exact product requirements, acceptable substitutes, budget, and deadline.
- Neutralize: apply the relevant account, retailer, browser, and device controls before searching.
- Find: search by manufacturer, model, and specifications rather than recommendation-feed language.
- Compare: record delivered cost, delivery date, seller, condition, warranty, and return obligations for each candidate.
- Verify: investigate seller identity, policies, reviews from multiple sources, and payment destination.
- Document: save the listing, terms, receipt, and communications until the return period and warranty concerns have passed.
This workflow leaves contextual search relevance in place while moving the important decisions—requirements, price, seller, and risk—back to you.
