Give the robot room, not a shove. In a narrow grocery aisle, pause and let people, carts, and the machine clear a path. If you can pass safely, walk around it without touching or blocking it. If the aisle remains obstructed—or you need a wider, accessible route—wait, choose another aisle when practical, or ask a store employee for help.

That advice is intentionally general. Grocery inventory robots differ by model and store, and there is no universal shopper command, signal, or right-of-way rule that makes every machine stop or move aside.

What an inventory robot is doing in the aisle

An inventory robot is store equipment used to inspect merchandise, not a roaming concierge. Simbe describes its Tally system as an autonomous robot that scans shelves and identifies out-of-stock items, pricing errors, and products placed in the wrong location. The resulting information goes to retail operations so staff can correct inventory and shelf conditions.

Because its job is visual shelf checking, Tally is not necessarily designed to answer a shopper’s question, understand a request to move, or navigate exactly as a person would. A robot may be following a programmed route, collecting images, or returning to a charging point while customers see only a machine moving slowly through the store.

A named deployment example, not a universal rule

Simbe announced that Tally would be tested at SPAR and INTERSPAR stores in Austria. During that test, the robot moved independently through stores and checked the food section. This example shows how one retailer used one system; it does not establish that every grocery chain has Tally, that every robot behaves the same way, or that all stores use identical aisle procedures.

What to do when you meet the robot

Use the following sequence whenever a robot, shoppers, and carts compete for the same narrow space. It avoids contact and gives you a clear escalation path without assuming the machine understands spoken instructions.

  1. Stop before entering the pinch point. Slow down when you see the robot ahead, especially near an endcap, refrigerator door, pallet, or queue of carts. A brief pause prevents you from trapping another shopper between the machine and a shelf.
  2. Read the available space. Look for people approaching from the opposite direction, a cart being pushed out of a side aisle, floor displays, and any marked accessible route. Decide whether a person can pass without brushing the robot or merchandise.
  3. Let traffic clear. If the aisle is temporarily busy, wait at the wider end rather than forcing your way through. Allow other shoppers to finish passing so the robot and people are not converging in the same few feet.
  4. Pass only when there is a comfortable opening. If there is enough room, walk around the robot at normal walking speed. Keep your hands, cart, and bags clear of its body, sensors, cables, and charging equipment.
  5. Do not touch, push, pull, or block it. Store equipment can stop, change direction, or require a clear view of the shelf. Moving it yourself could create a collision or interrupt an inventory run.
  6. Use another aisle if that is easier. A short detour is often simpler than waiting in a bottleneck, provided the alternate route works for your needs and does not create a second obstruction.
  7. Ask an employee when the path stays blocked. Tell staff the aisle location and explain whether you need help getting through, reaching a product, or finding an accessible route. Employees can apply that store’s procedure for the particular robot.

How to judge whether you can safely go around

There is no single clearance measurement that applies to every store, robot, cart, or mobility device. Judge the whole path rather than the gap at the robot’s front. A route that looks open may narrow around a display, a shelf corner, or a second shopper.

Conditions that usually favor waiting

  • The robot is centered in a narrow aisle and shoppers are approaching from both directions.
  • A cart, stroller, pallet, or promotional stand leaves no predictable escape space.
  • You would need to squeeze between the robot and a shelf, turn sideways, or make another person’s cart move abruptly.
  • The robot is near a dock, cable, doorway, checkout queue, or other equipment that you should not cross.
  • You cannot see whether the machine is moving, stopped for a sensor check, or about to change direction.

Conditions that can support a pass

  • The aisle is wide enough for you and the robot to remain separate, with no oncoming traffic.
  • You can keep your cart and body under control without touching shelves or displays.
  • You can see the full route around the machine and rejoin the aisle without cutting off another shopper.

These are common-sense traffic judgments, not a manufacturer’s operating specification. When uncertain, waiting or asking staff is the lower-risk choice.

Why speaking to the robot may not work

Shoppers often wonder whether a voice command such as “excuse me” will make the machine stop. No shopper-facing command that works across inventory-robot models has been established. Some systems may have sensors, lights, sounds, or a remote-assistance workflow; others may simply continue their assigned task until their navigation logic detects an obstacle.

Do not assume the robot will understand ordinary speech, recognize a request for a particular direction, or yield to the left or right. Avoid standing directly in front of it to test its reaction. If the machine does not move after you have allowed a reasonable opening, treat the situation as a staff-assistance issue rather than a negotiation with the robot.

A practical decision table

Situation Best shopper response Reason
Robot is ahead, aisle is otherwise open Pause, check both directions, and pass around without touching if there is comfortable space. Keeps you out of the robot’s path and avoids unnecessary interference.
Robot and an oncoming cart meet in a narrow aisle Wait at the wider end until the cart and robot clear, or take another aisle. Trying to squeeze through creates a three-way bottleneck.
Robot is beside a shelf you need Wait for a clear opening; if you still cannot reach the item, ask an employee to retrieve it. Reaching over or around moving equipment can cause contact or a dropped product.
Robot appears stopped in the only path Do not push it. Note the aisle and ask store staff for direction. The cause of the stop and the store’s recovery procedure are model-specific.
You use a powered mobility device and cannot pass comfortably Request staff assistance for a safe route or product access. Staff can address the actual layout without asking you to take an unsafe maneuver.
You are unsure whether a dock, cable, or marked area is part of the robot’s operating space Keep clear and ask an employee. Crossing equipment areas can create a trip, collision, or service problem.

Accessibility: what the federal guidance does and does not say

The U.S. Department of Justice discusses businesses’ obligations toward a person with a disability who uses an other power-driven mobility device, often abbreviated OPDMD. The general approach is that a business should allow the device unless that particular type cannot be accommodated because of legitimate safety requirements based on actual risks.

That guidance recognizes that narrow or crowded environments may need reasonable operating policies. Examples include requiring operation at pedestrian speed or identifying specific places or circumstances where a device cannot go. The details depend on the business, the device, and the real conditions on site.

This accessibility guidance concerns the shopper’s mobility device. It does not create a robot-specific right-of-way rule, state that an inventory robot must yield in a particular direction, or authorize a store to make a mobility-device user take an unsafe detour. If your device cannot pass comfortably, tell an employee exactly where the obstruction is and ask for assistance. Staff can move people, open a safer route, or help retrieve goods according to local policy.

Planning an accessible trip through a busy aisle

  1. Approach at a controllable speed and stop before the narrowest point.
  2. Tell nearby shoppers, if needed, that you are waiting for room; do not rely on the robot to interpret the statement.
  3. Check for an alternate aisle that is genuinely wide enough, rather than merely appearing less busy.
  4. Ask an employee for a clear route when the robot, displays, or carts leave insufficient space.
  5. If a staff member suggests a route that still does not work for your device, explain the specific clearance or turning problem and request another option.

Safety certification: useful evidence with a narrow scope

UL Solutions reported that Simbe’s Tally robot and charging dock earned certification to UL 3300. The announcement says the evaluation includes safe autonomous mobility in dynamic environments where robots may encounter unpredictable human behavior. That is relevant evidence about the named Tally system and its dock.

It is not a certification of every grocery robot, every retailer’s installation, or every possible interaction. It is also not a promise of zero risk. As UL Solutions vice president and general manager of Consumer, Medical and Information Technologies Sherry He put it: “Robots that move around and work in places full of people, like grocery stores or shopping aisles, need to meet a very different level of safety.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For shoppers, the practical implication is to treat the machine as functioning commercial equipment: keep clear of moving parts, do not interfere with charging hardware, and follow employee directions. Certification does not remove the need to watch the aisle, control a cart, or ask for help.

Common mistakes and better alternatives

Trying to squeeze past because the robot is slow

Slow movement does not make a narrow gap safe. You may meet another shopper around the corner or discover that the robot is correcting its route. Wait for a complete opening instead.

Standing directly in front of the machine

Blocking the robot to force a response can delay its task and make its navigation less predictable. Stand to the side at a safe distance and let staff handle a persistent obstruction.

Grabbing the robot to steer it

Do not use the handle, housing, sensor area, or display as a handhold. You could damage equipment, trigger an unexpected movement, or create a hazard for the next person.

Assuming every robot is Tally

The Austria SPAR and INTERSPAR test is one documented deployment. Other stores may use different hardware, software, routes, or employee procedures. Identify the store and ask staff rather than relying on behavior seen elsewhere.

Assuming the robot can answer a product question

Inventory scanning is an operations function. For ingredients, substitutions, promotions, or product location, ask an employee or use the store’s established customer-service channel.

Expecting a legal rule to settle the encounter

Accessibility rights and store safety duties matter, but the federal guidance described above does not assign a universal right of way between a shopper and a store robot. Resolve the immediate obstruction with staff while explaining any accessibility need.

If the robot repeatedly blocks your shopping

Handle a recurring problem as a store-operations issue. On the first occurrence, ask an employee for the fastest safe route. If the same aisle remains difficult, record the aisle number or nearby department, the approximate time, and whether the issue involved the robot, a charging dock, displays, or other traffic. Share those concrete details with a manager or customer-service desk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Explain the outcome you need: passing through with a mobility device, reaching a shelf, or avoiding a repeated bottleneck. Staff may know the robot’s schedule, a temporary route, or a product-retrieval option. Do not attempt to relocate the robot yourself, and do not obstruct it to obtain attention.

What shoppers can reasonably expect from a store

Stores that deploy autonomous inventory equipment remain responsible for managing their premises and assisting customers. You can reasonably ask where to walk, how to reach a product when the robot occupies the shelf, and who can help when the machine does not clear a route. The exact answer depends on the retailer’s layout and procedures.

You should not expect a universal visual signal, spoken phrase, or standardized yield behavior. Nor should you infer that a robot’s presence means a particular aisle is closed; wait for staff direction when signs, barriers, or employee instructions indicate otherwise.

Quick checklist before you pass

  • Have I stopped far enough away to avoid surprising the robot or another shopper?
  • Is the complete route around it visible and wide enough for my body, cart, stroller, or mobility device?
  • Is anyone approaching from the other direction?
  • Can I pass without touching the robot, dock, cable, shelf, or display?
  • Would waiting or using another aisle be simpler?
  • If the route is not comfortable, have I asked an employee rather than trying to move the equipment?

The safest shopping habit is predictable movement: slow down, leave space, and get human assistance when the aisle cannot accommodate everyone. Inventory robots are there to collect shelf information; they are not a substitute for store staff when a customer’s path or access needs require attention.
