A convincing vertical video is designed inside a tall frame from the start. Set the final destination first, record in a 9:16 composition when portrait is the primary format, choose a shot size that includes the information viewers need, and leave intentional space for captions and app controls. Centering, the rule of thirds, and particular headroom measurements are starting points—not laws. The right arrangement depends on whether the viewer should concentrate on a face, a demonstration, a product, or the surrounding place.

Start with the destination, not the camera

Vertical video normally uses a 9:16 aspect ratio. Common delivery sizes are 1080 × 1920 and 720 × 1280. Those dimensions describe the finished canvas, not merely a crop to apply at the end. The tall frame gives you less horizontal room, so a landscape composition can lose a person’s hands, a product, a second speaker, or useful environmental information when cropped.

Write down the intended destination before recording:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Is the video portrait-only, or must the same take also deliver a landscape version?
  • Will captions, a title, a logo, or a call to action be added?
  • Does the story depend on facial expression, hand movement, a full-body action, or the setting?
  • Will the viewer see the clip in a feed with buttons and descriptions over the image?

If both portrait and landscape files are required, plan two compositions or record a deliberately wider master with enough resolution and uncluttered space to reframe. Do not assume one arrangement will look equally natural in both ratios. Native portrait recording gives you the most control over the edges and the position of important details.

Choose a frame size that tells the story

How much of the subject belongs in the frame is a storytelling decision. A chest-up or medium shot is a useful starting point for a speaker when the room is not part of the message. Widen for hands, tools, a product demonstration, a dance move, or a location that explains why the subject is there. Move the phone rather than depending on digital zoom; digital zoom reduces image quality and can make later reframing less forgiving.

Framing choice Use it when Watch for
Tight face or head-and-shoulders Expression and direct address are the main information Hair, chin, or shoulders can be clipped; captions need a separate clear area
Chest-up or medium A presenter needs natural gestures without making the setting dominant Hands may still leave the frame during demonstrations
Medium-wide Hands, an object, or a small work area explains the point The face may become too small if the background is busy
Wide or full-body Movement, a room, or a place is essential context Fine facial detail and spoken-word clarity can be harder to maintain

Canon’s vertical-shooting guidance recommends recording a little wider when you need room for graphics or later crop adjustments. That does not mean leaving arbitrary empty space: every visible area should either support the message or provide a deliberate place for text.

Set headroom deliberately

Headroom is the space between the top of a subject’s head and the top edge of the frame. Too much makes a person feel distant and leaves unused space; too little makes the shot look cramped or risks cutting off hair during movement. In a vertical talking-head shot, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) uses the eyes near the top fifth of the frame as a reference. This is proportionally less space than the familiar horizontal top-third convention. AAAS summarizes the principle as: “In vertical videos, less headroom is needed proportionately, although the same concepts apply generally.”

Treat that position as a starting reference, not a fixed measurement. A tall hairstyle, a hat, a person leaning forward, or a graphic above the head may require a different top margin. Check the whole body of the frame as well: leave enough room below for natural gestures and captions without placing text over hands or a product.

Keep the camera approximately at the subject’s head or eye height for a natural interview view. A very low phone exaggerates the jaw and ceiling; a high phone looks down and can make the subject appear smaller. If the shot intentionally calls for a high or low angle, make that a visible creative choice rather than an accidental phone position.

Decide between centered and off-center placement

Center alignment is a strong default for direct-to-camera speech. The viewer immediately understands where to look, and the arrangement feels stable when the subject is addressing the audience. Lilly’s vertical-video guide recommends center alignment for this kind of social content.

Off-center framing can be better when the empty side has a job. Place a speaker beside a relevant machine, landscape, sign, or product; leave room for a planned title; or use the space to show the direction in which a person is looking or moving. Canon recommends experimenting with off-center compositions rather than treating centering as mandatory. The rule of thirds can help you test a position, but it should not override the message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before recording an off-center shot, ask:

  • Does the open area show context that a centered shot would hide?
  • Will the speaker’s gaze lead toward that area rather than out of the frame?
  • Is there a planned graphic that will occupy it?
  • Will platform controls or a caption block cover the visual information there?

If the answers are no, center the subject and use the frame efficiently. An empty side is not automatically sophisticated composition; it is useful only when it communicates something or supports a graphic.

Use the setting as context, not clutter

A portrait frame can feel intentional when the background explains the subject’s activity. A cook can remain near the counter being discussed; a mechanic can include the relevant part of the vehicle; a teacher can show the board or apparatus. Lilly advises choosing a relevant, uncluttered background. Remove bright objects, stray cables, unrelated signs, and high-contrast edges that compete with the face.

Inspect the edges and corners of the tall preview, not just the center. Vertical framing can reveal a distracting doorway or lamp that a horizontal view would have hidden. Check the top for poles or lines that appear to grow from the subject’s head, and check the bottom for bags, stands, or feet that you did not intend to include. A small change in position or a cleaner angle often fixes the problem without any software.

Separate the subject from the background with distance and light when possible. A little space behind a person reduces visual merging and gives the phone’s autofocus a clearer target. Keep the setting bright enough to retain useful detail, but do not add objects merely to fill the tall canvas.

Reserve space for captions and interface controls

Captions improve comprehension, but they also occupy part of the image. Social-video apps may place buttons, descriptions, usernames, or other controls over the lower or side portions of a vertical frame. AAAS recommends placing captions higher than those controls. Because interface layouts change by app, device, and format, there is no universal pixel-safe rectangle that remains correct everywhere.

  1. Decide during the shot plan whether captions will be one line, several lines, or accompanied by a title.
  2. Keep faces, hands, products, and other essential details out of the area where that text will appear.
  3. Edit the captions, export a draft, and preview it in the actual target app or its current creation preview.
  4. Move the text or reframe the clip if a button, description, or caption background hides important information.

Do not place every subject at the top simply to protect the bottom. A centered speaker can remain centered while the caption block sits in a clear band over a less important part of the background. For an off-center shot, make sure the text area does not erase the context that justified the off-center choice.

Light the face and record clean sound

Face the subject toward a window or another soft light source. A bright window behind the person can turn the face dark, while hard overhead light creates distracting shadows. Turn the subject or phone until the eyes and skin are evenly visible, then lock exposure if the phone offers that control so brightness does not pulse during the take.

Sound often determines whether a simple phone video is usable. Move the phone closer rather than relying on a distant microphone. An external microphone can improve speech when the room is noisy or the camera must stay far away, but it is optional; test that the phone is actually recording from it. Listen for air conditioners, traffic, clothing rustle, and echoes before making a long take.

Record a short test and review both picture and sound with headphones if available. A technically sharp image is not a successful shot if the first sentence is clipped, the voice is buried, or the light changes halfway through.

Choose stabilization and movement for the scene

A locked phone is appropriate for an explanation, interview, recipe step, or demonstration where the viewer should concentrate on information. A tripod or phone mount keeps the horizon and headroom consistent and is particularly useful for self-recording. Place it at the intended eye height before stepping into position.

Handheld movement can feel immediate, but it should have a reason. If the camera must travel smoothly, a gimbal can help; it is not required for ordinary vertical clips. Walk slowly, keep both hands on the phone when possible, and leave extra room around a moving subject so the frame does not cut off a hand or head.

When a person or object moves through the shot, compose for the movement rather than the starting pose. Leave more space in the direction of travel or gaze, and rehearse the path once. A static composition can then be tightened after you know where the action actually goes.

Record a vertical shot step by step

  1. Write the delivery brief. Note the target app or screen, 9:16 portrait dimensions, whether a landscape version is also needed, and the information that must remain visible.
  2. Select the visual context. Choose a relevant location and remove distractions. Decide whether the story needs a tight, medium, or wide view.
  3. Mount and orient the phone. Turn it vertically, set the camera near head or eye level, and use gridlines if available. Gridlines can help you test center and rule-of-thirds positions without dictating the final choice.
  4. Set the subject and headroom. Place the eyes with intentional space above them, using the top-fifth reference for a vertical talking head. Check the bottom and side edges for clipped hands, products, or movement.
  5. Choose centered or purposeful off-center framing. Keep a direct address centered unless context or graphics make another placement more informative. Ensure any open area is genuinely useful.
  6. Check overlays before pressing record. Imagine the caption block and app controls. Move important visual details away from those areas while preserving a natural composition.
  7. Light and focus the subject. Face a window or soft light, avoid a bright background, tap to focus, and lock exposure or focus if the phone allows it.
  8. Stabilize the setup. Use a tripod or mount for a locked shot. If moving, rehearse the path and leave space for the action.
  9. Make a short test. Review the entire vertical frame and listen to the audio. Look for changing exposure, clipped edges, unwanted background objects, and noise.
  10. Record the take. Keep the phone’s native resolution and frame-rate settings consistent with the delivery specification; AAAS gives 1080p at 30 frames per second as a practical phone example.
  11. Review before resetting. Confirm that the first and last words are present, the subject stays inside the frame, and the background remains appropriate. Retake while the setup is still in place if any essential detail fails.

Native portrait versus a landscape crop

Approach Advantages Risks and decision point
Record natively in 9:16 You control both side edges, subject scale, headroom, and caption space from the beginning The same take may not provide enough width for a natural landscape edit
Record landscape and crop later Useful when landscape is the primary delivery or a wide group must remain visible A portrait crop can remove side context, hands, or a second subject; resolution and reframing room must be sufficient
Plan separate portrait and landscape views Each version can use an appropriate subject size and placement Requires additional setup or takes and consistent continuity

If you must capture one master for both ratios, keep the critical subject near the shared center, avoid important details at the extreme sides, and record at a resolution that leaves room to crop. This is a compromise, not proof that one frame is optimal for both outputs.

Fix common composition problems

Symptom Likely cause Correction
The subject looks tiny in a tall frame The camera is too far away or excess headroom and background were left without purpose Move closer, tighten to a medium view, or make the setting carry specific context
Hair or hands are clipped The frame was set for a still pose and did not allow movement Widen slightly, raise or lower the phone, and rehearse the action before recording
The video feels empty on one side Off-center placement has no visual or graphic reason Center the subject or add relevant context and a planned text area
Captions cover the face or product Text was added without checking the actual platform preview Move captions into a clear area and verify them in the target app before publishing
The face is dark A bright window or lamp is behind the subject Turn the subject toward soft light and retest exposure
Speech is echoey or hard to hear The phone is distant or the room is noisy Move closer, reduce background noise, or test an external microphone
The picture shakes The phone is handheld during a shot that needs steadiness Use a tripod or mount, or choose controlled movement with a gimbal when movement serves the scene
A portrait crop loses the explanation The original landscape shot placed key information at the sides Record a native portrait version or plan a wider dual-format composition before the next take

Apply the choices to typical vertical scenes

Direct-to-camera explanation

Use a centered chest-up or medium shot, eye-level camera, restrained headroom, and a quiet background. Keep the lower area available for captions without placing the face there. If the setting is part of the explanation, widen just enough to show the relevant object and make that object visible on the first frame.

Product demonstration

Choose a medium-wide view that includes the presenter’s hands and the product. Leave movement space around the item, and check that captions do not cover the controls being demonstrated. An off-center presenter can work when the product occupies the open side and the gaze or gesture connects the two.

Walking or moving subject

Use a gimbal or careful handheld movement only when following the action adds information. Frame in the direction of travel, rehearse the route, and widen enough that the subject does not repeatedly leave the tall frame. Keep the background simple so motion does not become visual noise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Place-based or event clip

Let the location explain the moment with a wider shot, but keep a person, sign, or action large enough to identify. Inspect the top and bottom edges for accidental crops, and do not allow a bright background to silhouette the main subject.

Finish with an export and posting check

  • Confirm the project is 9:16 and that the selected output size matches the destination.
  • Watch the entire clip vertically, including its opening and closing frames.
  • Check that faces, hands, products, and demonstrations are not clipped.
  • Verify captions for readability, timing, spelling, and overlap with app controls.
  • Preview the creative in the current target-platform interface, because control locations can change.
  • Listen on the phone speaker and headphones if possible; speech should remain understandable without excessive volume.
  • Make sure no background detail contradicts or distracts from the spoken point.

Vertical composition is not a rule that every subject must be centered or every frame must be tight. It is a commitment to make the tall canvas carry the story: choose the destination, place the subject and eyes deliberately, give the setting a job, protect essential details from overlays, and test the complete result before you record a long take.
