Ship an Xbox Series X or Series S as a fragile computer: shut it down, protect it with anti-static cushioning, immobilize it in a strong corrugated carton, and measure the sealed package before buying postage. FedEx’s no-original-packaging procedure for computers and peripherals calls for 3–4 inches of air-cellular cushioning on every side; UPS likewise recommends anti-static foam and bubble sheeting for electronics.
Do not choose a box from the console’s bare dimensions alone. Wrapping, the controller, cables and power cord all increase the required carton size. A properly packed console should remain centered and motionless when the closed carton is gently rocked.
What size and weight should you plan around?
Start with the manufacturer’s bare-console figures, then add the complete protective system. Microsoft lists the following dimensions and weights in its specifications:

Those measurements describe the console itself, not a shippable package. Anti-static bubble wrap, a controller, HDMI cable, power cord and void fill add both thickness and weight. Microsoft does not publish one universal outer-carton size for shipping, so select the box only after the console and accessories have been wrapped.

Plan the shipment before buying materials
Make an inventory before you start. Confirm whether you are sending only the console or also a controller, HDMI cable, power cord, batteries, headset or other items. Every additional item needs its own protection and consumes carton space. Photograph the complete set so you can verify what was packed.
Inspect the carton before loading it. Use a new, sturdy corrugated box with clean, rigid panels and intact flaps. A double-wall carton is a useful upgrade when the shipment will face stacking pressure or when the console has high replacement value. Do not choose a carton that is merely large enough to hold the wrapped console; it must also leave room for cushioning on every face.
Budget for the entire finished package rather than the console alone. Shipping charges depend on the sealed package’s outside dimensions and weight, and a two-box design uses more cardboard and cushioning. A staffed pack-and-ship counter may also charge separately for materials, labor and specialty packaging. Prices and services vary by location, so ask for the current total before handing over the console.

Materials that protect an Xbox in transit
- New, sturdy corrugated carton: A crush-resistant single-wall box can work for a compact shipment; a double-wall carton gives greater protection against stacking and impacts.
- Anti-static bubble wrap or anti-static foam: UPS specifically warns that EPS peanuts can generate static electricity that may damage electronics and recommends anti-static foam with bubble sheeting.
- At least 3–4 inches of air-cellular cushioning: FedEx specifies this thickness around computers and peripherals when the original packaging is unavailable.
- Void fill: Use additional cushioning to close every gap, including the top and bottom. Suitable options include more bubble wrap, foam sheets or other electronics-safe cushioning.
- Separate bags or wrapping for accessories: Plugs, connector ends and hard edges must not strike the console.
- Pressure-sensitive plastic packing tape at least 2 inches wide: Reinforced or heavy-duty tape is preferred by UPS.
- Two labels: Put the carrier label on the top surface and a duplicate address label inside the carton.
- Scale and tape measure: You need the final sealed weight and outside measurements to obtain an accurate shipping quote.
Step-by-step packing procedure
1. Shut down, disconnect and document the console
- Use the Xbox shutdown command and wait until the console is fully off. Do not ship it in standby mode.
- Unplug every cable and remove any disc from the drive. A disc left inside can move during handling and may be damaged.
- Photograph the console, its serial number and each accessory before wrapping. Take additional pictures of the finished package and the sealed label.
- Check the console for existing scratches or damage and record them. This gives you a condition record if a carrier claim is necessary.
Keep the controller, HDMI cable and power cord together, but do not bundle them directly against the console. Microsoft lists those accessories with Series S; the same separation principle protects any Series X accessories you are sending.
2. Bag the console before using loose-fill material
If your void fill includes peanuts or another loose material, place the dry console in a clean, sealed plastic bag first. The bag prevents particles from entering ventilation openings and creates a barrier between the electronics and loose fill. The bag is not a substitute for cushioning: the console still needs protection on every face.
3. Wrap all six sides with anti-static cushioning
- Place the console on a clean surface and cover the front, rear, top, bottom and both sides with anti-static bubble wrap or anti-static foam.
- Build at least 3–4 inches of air-cellular cushioning around the wrapped console, following FedEx’s no-original-packaging guidance for a computer or peripheral. Add more at corners and on any face likely to receive an impact.
- Overlap seams and secure the wrap so it cannot unwind. Do not compress the cushioning so tightly that its air cells are flattened.
- Check that no hard edge, stand, vent rim or corner is exposed. The wrapped unit should have a soft, continuous exterior.
UPS cautions that EPS can create static electricity around electronic items. If you use peanuts, keep the console sealed in its bag and use a layer of anti-static cushioning between the bag and the loose fill.
4. Wrap the controller and cables separately
- Wrap the controller in bubble sheeting or foam and secure the wrap with tape.
- Coil the HDMI cable and power cord loosely. Put each in its own bag or wrap so plugs cannot scratch the console or puncture its cushioning.
- Place the wrapped accessories in a side space or, preferably, in a small inner carton. They must not be able to move into the console during a drop.
5. Choose the carton after wrapping
Measure the wrapped console and the protected accessories before selecting the outer box. Leave enough room for cushioning on every side; a box that barely fits the wrapped unit will not provide impact protection.

A single-box method is acceptable when the carton is strong and the contents can be immobilized. For a more fragile shipment, UPS describes a two-box method:

- Put the wrapped console and accessories in a sturdy inner box.
- Choose an outer box that is 6 inches larger in each dimension than the inner box.
- Maintain 3 inches of cushioning between the inner box and every wall of the outer box.
The two-box arrangement creates a second crush-resistant layer and keeps an impact on the outside carton farther from the console.
6. Load and immobilize the contents
- Place a cushioning layer on the bottom of the carton before inserting the wrapped console.
- Center the console so it does not touch any wall. Keep the protected controller and cables in a separate side space or inner box.
- Add cushioning on every side. FedEx says to fill all spaces so the wrapped item fits tightly inside the box.
- Fill the top last, then close the flaps without crushing the contents.
- Gently rock the closed carton. If you feel or hear movement, reopen it and add cushioning. Repeat until the contents stay fixed.
Do not rely on the console’s own weight to hold it in place. A 10-pound-class object can still gain enough momentum in a drop to break a corner, damage a port or crack an internal board.
7. Seal the carton with an H pattern
- Use pressure-sensitive plastic tape at least 2 inches wide.
- Run three strips across the center seam and the two outer flap seams on the top.
- Apply the same three-strip pattern to the bottom.
- Tape every remaining flap edge or seam. UPS recommends heavy-duty or reinforced tape for this job.
The result is an H-taped top and bottom, with no open flap edge that can catch during conveyor handling.
8. Label the package and retain identification
- Place the carrier label on the largest flat surface, normally the top. Keep it away from a seam or corner.
- Put a duplicate address label and your return details inside the carton. UPS packaging guidance recommends an internal duplicate label in case the outer label is damaged.
- Write down the console serial number, tracking number, declared value and the date you handed over the parcel.
9. Weigh and measure the sealed package
Measure the finished carton at its extreme outside points: length, width and height. Weigh it after all tape and labels are attached. Enter those values when creating the shipment; using the bare console’s weight can produce an incorrect quote.
UPS applies dimensional weight when a package is large relative to its actual weight. A Series X or Series S is well below UPS’s 70-pound heavy-package threshold, but the packed weight still controls the quote. UPS states that packages over 70 lb may incur an added fee and packages over 150 lb are treated as freight.
10. Declare value and choose coverage
Declare or insure the console’s value under the carrier’s current terms. Coverage limits, exclusions and claim procedures can change, so review the terms shown when you purchase the label. Keep your photographs, serial-number record, receipt and packing documentation together.
How package choices affect price and protection
The cheapest method is not always the smallest carton. A tight carton may save dimensional-weight charges but leaves too little impact protection. Conversely, adding a second box increases the outside dimensions and may raise postage, yet it adds a crush-resistant layer. Compare the quoted price for a properly cushioned single box with the price for a two-box shipment before deciding.

Do not estimate a shipping price from the 9.8-pound, 7.9-pound or 4.25-pound console specification. The controller, cables, cushioning, carton, tape and labels all add weight. The final dimensions can matter just as much when the carrier applies dimensional weight.

Single box or two boxes?

Bubble wrap or loose fill?
Anti-static bubble wrap or foam
Air-cellular cushioning gives a predictable thickness and stays around the console when secured. It is the easier option when you are packing one console because you can verify the 3–4-inch protective layer on every face.
Loose-fill peanuts
Loose fill can occupy irregular gaps, but it can settle during transit and leave a void. It also must not touch the electronics directly because UPS warns that EPS can generate static electricity. Use a sealed plastic bag around the console, retain a continuous cushioning layer and fill the carton completely.
Common packing failures and their fixes
- Box chosen from console dimensions: The wrapped unit barely fits and has no impact layer. Measure after wrapping and select a larger carton.
- Console touches a carton wall: Add side cushioning or move to a larger box. No face should contact corrugated board directly.
- Accessories loose in the same cavity: Wrap each accessory and place it in a side compartment or inner box.
- Only one strip of tape: Remove it and reseal with three 2-inch strips on both top and bottom, plus tape on every seam.
- Peanuts packed against vents: Rebag the console and add anti-static foam or bubble sheeting before using loose fill.
- Rattling after sealing: Reopen the carton and add void fill until rocking produces no movement.
- Shipping weight copied from the specification sheet: Weigh the sealed package; the console-only figure excludes the box, wrap and accessories.
- Label placed across a seam: Move it to a clean, flat top surface and put a duplicate inside.
- Coverage assumed without checking terms: Review the carrier’s current declared-value rules, exclusions and claim process when purchasing the label.
DIY packing versus a staffed pack-and-ship counter
DIY packing costs less when you already have a suitable carton and cushioning, and it lets you document every layer. A staffed service is useful when you lack a strong box, a scale or enough cushioning. UPS directs customers to The UPS Store for supplies and packing help, while FedEx offers packaging services and specialty boxes. Ask the location for the current material price, packing charge and any guarantee before handing over the console; availability and terms vary by location.

Can I ship an Xbox without its original retail box?
Yes. Use the same principles FedEx gives for computers and peripherals without original packaging: protect all six sides with at least 3–4 inches of air-cellular cushioning, immobilize the wrapped unit and use a sturdy corrugated outer carton.
Is the 3–4-inch cushioning requirement total or per side?
Treat it as protection around every side of the wrapped console, not as a single layer placed only above and below. Add extra cushioning at corners and any exposed hard edges.
What box size should I buy?

Can I use ordinary packing peanuts?
Use caution. UPS warns that EPS peanuts can create static electricity that may damage electronics. If loose fill is necessary, seal the console in a clean plastic bag and keep anti-static foam or bubble sheeting between the console and the fill.
How do I know whether the package is packed tightly enough?
Close the carton and gently rock it. You should not feel or hear the console or accessories shifting. If there is movement, reopen the box and add cushioning rather than relying on tape or the console’s weight.
How much tape is enough?

How much cushioning should surround the console?
FedEx’s no-original-packaging guidance calls for at least 3–4 inches of air-cellular cushioning around every side of a computer or peripheral. Add more where needed so the wrapped console cannot move.
