“Multi-tool blade” can describe three very different accessories: an oscillating power-tool blade, a line-cutting blade on an outdoor attachment, or the knife and saw blades built into a pocket multitool. Their steel, edge geometry, mounts and maintenance instructions are not interchangeable.

The safe rule is simple: identify the blade first, isolate the tool from power, inspect it, and sharpen only when that blade’s manufacturer provides a method. The cited EGO line-cutting blade has a file-and-stone procedure; Leatherman provides separate guidance for plain and serrated pocket-tool edges. The Triton guidance for oscillating accessories supports inspection and replacement of dull or excessively worn blades, not a universal resharpening technique.

Identify which kind of multi-tool blade you have

Before touching a file, stone or cleaning fluid, determine what “multi-tool” means in your case. The same sharpening motion that is appropriate for one edge can damage another or leave an accessory unsafe to use.

Blade category Typical job What the cited maker guidance supports Default decision
Oscillating saw blade Plunge cuts, flush cuts and mixed-material work from a powered oscillating tool Triton says to use sharp blades, inspect accessories and reject damaged or excessively worn ones. The cited material does not provide a resharpening angle or procedure. Inspect and replace unless the exact blade maker publishes a compatible sharpening method.
Outdoor line-cutting blade Cutting line or vegetation on an attachment such as EGO’s Rotocut system EGO gives a specific file-or-stone method, including preserving the original cutting-edge angle. Follow that model’s instructions exactly; do not generalize them to saw blades.
Pocket multitool blade Knife, saw or other folding-tool edge carried in a pocket multitool Leatherman distinguishes plain edges from serrations and specifies equipment and technique for each. Use a suitable sharpener for the edge geometry and maintain the tool afterward.

Safety steps before sharpening, cleaning or changing a blade

Power isolation is the first maintenance step, not an optional precaution. EGO instructs users to remove the battery before sharpening its line-cutting blade. The Triton XT 18MTB manual says to disconnect the tool before changing accessories or performing maintenance.

  1. Stop the tool completely. Release the trigger or switch and wait for every moving part to stop.
  2. Remove the energy source. Take out the battery from a cordless tool or disconnect the plug from mains power. For a pocket multitool, close and lock the blade before handling the rest of the tool.
  3. Remove the accessory only as the manual describes. Do not improvise with a mount, retaining screw or locking mechanism.
  4. Wear eye protection and suitable gloves. EGO specifically calls for eye protection and gloves while filing its line-cutting blade.
  5. Secure the workpiece. EGO’s procedure uses a vise. Keep fingers away from the cutting edge even when the blade is clamped.
  6. Check the accessory and its fasteners. A loose, cracked, bent or badly worn blade is a replacement candidate, not a sharpening project.

After maintenance, reinstall the accessory and verify that the retaining hardware is secure before reconnecting power. If the manual gives a torque, locking or alignment procedure, that instruction takes priority over a general checklist.

Inspect the blade before deciding to sharpen it

Look for damage, wear and looseness

Inspection should happen before use and whenever cutting performance changes. The Triton manual says to use sharp blades and not to use dull or excessively worn accessories. EGO says to replace Rotocut blades immediately if they are badly worn or become loose after the head is fixed in position.

  • Reject a blade with a crack, bent body, missing tooth, chipped cutting edge or other visible structural damage.
  • Reject an accessory that remains loose after it has been installed and secured according to the manual.
  • Replace an edge that is excessively worn rather than removing more material in an attempt to restore it.
  • Do not continue using a blade simply because it can still cut. A dull accessory can make the tool work harder and can produce a poor or unpredictable cut; the cited Triton direction is to use a sharp blade.

Confirm that the blade is the right part

Read the tool and accessory markings before maintenance. Record the model, mounting interface and intended materials. A sharpening method cannot correct an incompatible accessory, and a blade that fits physically may still be unsuitable for the workpiece.

  1. Remove the battery. Do not begin while the attachment is connected to its power source.
  2. Take the blade off the guard. Follow the attachment’s removal method so the blade and retaining hardware are not bent or lost.
  3. Secure the blade in a vise. Clamp it firmly enough that it cannot move, without crushing or distorting the blade.
  4. Put on eye protection and gloves. Keep the cutting edge directed away from your hands.
  5. Choose a fine-tooth file or sharpening stone. EGO’s instruction allows either. Use a tool that lets you control the edge rather than removing large amounts of metal.
  6. Follow the original cutting-edge angle. Make controlled strokes along the existing bevel. Do not invent a new angle or flatten the edge.
  7. Work carefully on each cutting edge. Keep the treatment consistent so the blade remains balanced and its geometry matches the original design.
  8. Stop and inspect. If the edge is badly damaged, excessively worn or cannot be restored without changing its shape, replace the blade instead.
  9. Reinstall the blade on the guard. Secure it with the two screws specified by EGO’s procedure.
  10. Recheck the assembly before use. Confirm that the blade is seated correctly and that both screws are secure before reinstalling the battery.

The important limitation is the source of the angle: preserve the angle that EGO built into this line-cutting blade. That does not establish a safe angle for another attachment, another manufacturer or another blade profile.

How to sharpen pocket multitool blades

Pocket multitools commonly combine a plain knife edge with a serrated section or a separate saw. Treat each geometry as a different sharpening job, and follow the multitool maker’s instructions for the exact model.

Plain-edged sections

Leatherman says straight-edged blade sections can be sharpened with standard equipment such as whetstones, rods and sharpening kits. Use a controlled pass that follows the existing bevel rather than trying to create a new profile. The exact angle is model-dependent; the cited maintenance guidance does not establish one universal angle for every pocket multitool.

  • Clean the blade so residue does not hide chips or damage.
  • Support the blade securely and keep the edge pointed away from your body.
  • Use a stone, rod or kit that lets you maintain the existing bevel.
  • Remove only enough material to restore a continuous edge.
  • Wipe away filings and inspect the edge before closing the tool.

Serrated sections

Serrations have individual curves that a flat stone can erase. Leatherman states: “Serrated blades require a sharpening system specifically designed to accommodate serrated edges in order to maintain the curvature of the serrations.” Its maintenance guidance also says to sharpen only the edged side. Working on the flat side wears away the serrations.

  1. Choose a system made for serrations and sized for the individual grooves.
  2. Place the tool so you can see the bevelled, edged side of the serrations.
  3. Work each groove while preserving its existing curvature.
  4. Do not run the sharpener across the flat side as if it were a plain knife edge.
  5. Remove loose filings, clean the tool and check that the serration profiles remain distinct.

These instructions apply to Leatherman-style pocket multitool maintenance, not to serrated oscillating accessories. A pocket-tool sharpener is not automatically suitable for a powered saw blade.

Oscillating saw blades: when replacement is the safer answer

The cited Triton material tells users to use sharp blades, inspect accessories before use and avoid dull or excessively worn accessories, but it does not provide a resharpening procedure. No broadly applicable oscillating-blade angle is established here because tooth pitch, carbide construction, coating, body thickness and mount design vary.

Use this decision path

  1. Inspect the blade with power removed. Look for missing or damaged teeth, cracks, bending, excessive wear and a loose mount.
  2. Check the blade maker’s manual or product instructions. Sharpen only if that exact maker and model specify a method.
  3. If no method is provided, replace it. Do not transfer the EGO file angle or Leatherman serration technique to the oscillating blade.
  4. Choose a replacement for the actual material. A blade intended for wood may not be appropriate for screws, nails, cement board or plaster.
  5. Confirm the mount before ordering. Physical resemblance does not prove compatibility.

Replacement is especially appropriate when the blade is damaged, excessively worn, loose or no longer produces the result specified by the tool maker. A replacement also avoids changing tooth geometry in a way the tool was not designed to handle.

Check What to verify Why it matters
Mounting interface OPEN-LOK, Starlock or another interface named by the tool and blade makers The cited Milwaukee blade cannot be used with Starlock tools.
Width and profile The stated 1-3/8-inch width and tooth shape versus the cut you need Width and geometry affect access, control and the resulting cut.
Material rating Whether the product lists your workpiece, such as wood, screws, nails, cement board or plaster Matching the material reduces the risk of using an unsuitable tooth design.
Condition threshold Whether the current blade is damaged, excessively worn, dull or loose These are replacement triggers in the cited manufacturer guidance.
Performance claims Whether a longevity figure is a manufacturer claim or independent test Milwaukee says its carbide teeth blades last “up to 50X longer than standard bi-metal blades.” The product page does not state a publication year, and no independent test is identified here, so treat that number as a company claim rather than a verified universal result.

Always check the current packaging and manual for your tool. “Universal-fit” in a product name does not override an explicit exclusion such as the Starlock incompatibility stated for this model.

Cleaning and maintenance by blade category

EGO Rotocut attachment

For EGO’s Rotocut attachment, remove the battery and detach the head from the shaft before cleaning. EGO specifies a damp cloth with mild detergent, followed by wiping off excess moisture with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use solvents or detergents containing aromatic oils on plastic parts.

  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Detach the head from the shaft.
  3. Wipe the attachment with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
  4. Remove remaining moisture with a soft, dry cloth.
  5. Inspect the blades and retaining hardware before reassembly.
  6. Replace blades immediately if they are badly worn or become loose after the head is fixed in position.

Pocket multitools

Leatherman advises cleaning, drying and periodically relubricating a pocket multitool to inhibit corrosion. After exposure to salt water or a marine environment, rinse the tool with fresh water, dry it thoroughly and apply a light oil. The same maintenance page warns that acetone and brake cleaners may damage plastic components.

  • Rinse away salt or marine residue with fresh water.
  • Dry the pivots, handles and blade channels completely.
  • Apply a light oil as directed for the tool.
  • Open and close the joints carefully to distribute lubricant, then wipe away excess.
  • Avoid acetone and brake cleaners where the tool contains plastic components.

Oscillating tools and accessories

Cleaning directions differ by tool, blade coating and accessory construction. Do not assume that a solvent, oil or wet-cleaning method safe for a pocket multitool is safe for an oscillating accessory. Disconnect power, remove debris using the method allowed by the tool manual, dry the accessory when the manual requires it and inspect it before storage or reuse.

Storage and routine inspection

Store cleaned blades so their edges cannot contact one another or loose hardware. Keep removable accessories with their retaining parts and model information. Before the next job, inspect the edge, body, mount and fasteners again; a blade that was acceptable at the end of one task can be damaged during removal or storage.

  • Keep sharp edges covered or separated from other metal parts.
  • Store accessories dry and away from corrosive residue.
  • Record the model and mount when a replacement is needed.
  • Check that a pocket multitool is fully closed before placing it in a pocket or case.
  • Do not return a blade to service if storage reveals a crack, bend, missing tooth or loose component.

Troubleshooting common maintenance decisions

The blade cuts slowly

Remove power and inspect for dullness, excessive wear, damaged teeth and an unsuitable material rating. For an oscillating blade, replace it unless the exact manufacturer supplies a sharpening method. For the EGO line-cutting blade or a compatible plain-edged pocket blade, use only the applicable maker’s procedure.

The accessory vibrates or shifts

Disconnect power and check the mount, retaining screws and blade body. A loose accessory is not a sharpening problem. Secure it only as the manual specifies; replace it if the blade or mount is damaged or remains loose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The edge looks uneven after sharpening

Stop using the blade and compare its profile with the original geometry. An uneven edge can mean that too much material was removed or the wrong tool was used. If the manufacturer’s method cannot restore the original profile, replacement is the safer choice.

The blade has residue or corrosion

Use the cleaning method approved for that tool. For a pocket multitool exposed to salt water, Leatherman’s guidance is fresh-water rinsing, thorough drying and light oil. For EGO plastic parts, avoid solvents and aromatic-oil detergents. Do not transfer either method to an oscillating tool without checking its manual.

A practical maintenance checklist

  1. Identify the blade category and exact model.
  2. Disconnect power or remove the battery.
  3. Wear eye protection and gloves where the maker requires them.
  4. Inspect for cracks, bends, missing teeth, excessive wear and looseness.
  5. Find the exact manufacturer’s sharpening instructions.
  6. Sharpen only the blade types covered by those instructions.
  7. Replace an accessory when the maker says it is damaged, excessively worn, dull or loose.
  8. Clean with the approved method for that tool and material.
  9. Reinstall and secure the blade exactly as specified.
  10. Inspect again before reconnecting power or putting the multitool back into service.

The Bottom Line

There is no single “multi-tool blade” sharpening method. Isolate the tool, identify the blade, inspect it and follow the maker’s instructions. Sharpen the EGO line-cutting blade or compatible pocket-tool edges only as specified; for oscillating saw blades, replace damaged or excessively worn accessories unless the exact manufacturer publishes a safe resharpening procedure.
