The safe way to sharpen a multi-tool knife is to identify its edge first, match the sharpener to that geometry, secure the compact tool as its instructions allow, and use light strokes away from your body. Plain and serrated sections require different techniques, and no single angle is correct for every maker or model.

Before touching an abrasive to the blade, find the exact model manual or maintenance page. Confirm whether the edge is plain, fully serrated, or a combination, then use the manufacturer’s angle and safety directions rather than copying a setting from another knife.

Why multi-tool blades need a careful sharpening method

A multi-tool knife is usually shorter and harder to hold than a kitchen or workshop knife. Its handle may contain pliers, drivers, or other implements, and the blade may fold into the handle. That compact design makes control more important: a slipping grip can put fingers in the edge path, while an improvised clamp can damage the tool or leave the blade free to move.

Edge shape is the first decision. A plain edge has one continuous bevel and can generally be sharpened with a suitable stone, rod, or guided sharpener. A serrated edge has individual teeth and curved scallops; a flat abrasive used across the back can erase those curves. A combination edge contains both sections, so each section must be treated separately.

Angle is equally model-specific. For example, Leatherman’s maintenance guidance specifies 32 degrees included (16 degrees per side) for its plain-edge sections and 20 degrees on one side for its serrated sections. Those figures are Leatherman specifications, not a universal setting for every multi-tool, steel, or manufacturer.

Identify the blade and read its instructions

Check the make and model

Look for a model name or number on the tool, packaging, or original documentation. Use that identifier to locate the maker’s manual or care page. If you cannot establish the model, do not assume that an angle printed for a similar-looking tool is suitable; use a conservative, manufacturer-approved sharpening method or seek professional service.

Classify the edge

  • Plain edge: one uninterrupted cutting edge. A stone, flat abrasive, rod, or guided system can follow its bevel.
  • Fully serrated: repeated teeth and scallops. Use a narrow round or tapered sharpener that fits each groove and work from the edged side only unless the maker explicitly says otherwise.
  • Combination edge: a plain section and a serrated section on the same blade. Mark mentally where the transition occurs and change tools and technique at that point.

Inspect the condition before sharpening

Remove dirt and residue so you can see the bevel. Check for a rolled edge, chips, bent teeth, or corrosion. Sharpening can restore a dull edge, but it is not a substitute for repairing severe damage. If the blade or pivot is damaged, stop and follow the manufacturer’s repair or service route rather than removing large amounts of material.

Choose equipment that matches the geometry

Blade section Suitable equipment Control objective Important limitation
Plain edge Suitable whetstone, sharpening rod, or guided sharpener Keep the abrasive at the maker’s specified bevel angle for every pass Do not borrow an angle from another model or steel
Serrated edge Narrow round or diamond rod, or a system designed for serrations Fit the rod to each scallop and preserve the tooth profile Do not abrade the flat back in a way that wears the serrations away
Combination edge Plain-edge equipment plus a serration-specific rod or system Sharpen each section only with the method intended for it Do not run one flat abrasive across the entire blade

Standard stones and rods

For a plain edge, a correctly sized stone or rod is often sufficient. Select an abrasive that lets you reach the whole bevel without forcing the blade into an unstable position. Follow the abrasive maker’s instructions for preparation, cleaning, and use; the multi-tool maker’s angle remains the controlling specification.

Guided systems and clamps

A guided system can make a small blade easier to control because the guide establishes a repeatable angle. It must, however, be compatible with the blade and handle. Secure the tool exactly as the guide directs. Work Sharp’s Precision Adjust guide illustrates a general trade-off: lower angles around 15–22.5 degrees favor higher sharpness with lower durability, while 23–30 degrees favor functional sharpness with higher durability. Those are that system’s general examples, not validated settings for every multi-tool.

Purpose-built accessories

Leatherman describes its Blade Sharpener as combining carbide and ceramic sharpening elements with a diamond-coated rod for serrations. What angle should you use?

The correct answer is the angle specified for your exact blade. An angle may be stated per side or as an included total, and confusing those terms can double the intended bevel.

Guidance Value How to interpret it Scope
Leatherman plain-edge section 32 degrees included 16 degrees on each side Leatherman’s published specification for its plain-edge sections
Leatherman serrated section 20 degrees one-sided Sharpen the edged side at 20 degrees Leatherman’s published specification for its serrated sections
Work Sharp Precision Adjust examples 15–22.5 degrees or 23–30 degrees Lower range favors sharpness; higher range favors durability General guidance for that sharpening system, not a universal multi-tool prescription

If the manual gives an angle in a different format, follow its terminology. Keep the guide, stone, or rod aligned with the existing bevel instead of trying to create a visibly different profile. When no angle is published, ask the manufacturer or use a compatible guided system conservatively rather than guessing.

Prepare a safe sharpening setup

  1. Clear the work area. Use a stable, well-lit surface with enough room to move the tool without contacting another person or object.
  2. Read both sets of instructions. Review the multi-tool’s warnings and the sharpener’s directions, including any rules for locking or closing a folding blade.
  3. Clean and inspect the blade. Remove residue and identify exactly where the plain and serrated sections begin and end.
  4. Position the tool as directed. If a clamp is compatible, secure the blade according to that system’s instructions. If you are holding the tool, keep fingers outside the sharpening path and maintain a grip that cannot close the blade onto your hand.
  5. Point the edge away from people. Gerber’s safety instruction is: “Always cut away from your body, or from the body of any other person around which the knife is being applied.” Keep the same direction while sharpening and while checking the edge.

How to sharpen a plain-edge multi-tool blade

1. Establish the existing bevel

Use the model’s stated angle, not a generic knife setting. A plain edge should contact the abrasive along the bevel rather than only at the shoulder or very tip. If a guided system is used, set it to the manufacturer’s specified value and verify whether that value is per side or included.

2. Make controlled, light passes

Move the blade or abrasive in the direction prescribed by the sharpener. Keep the angle and pressure consistent from the heel toward the tip. A compact blade gives you less room to recover from a slip, so short, deliberate passes are preferable to forceful strokes. Use only enough abrasion to restore the edge; removing extra steel shortens blade life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check progress without placing a finger on the edge

Stop periodically and inspect the bevel under good light. If your maker’s instructions use burr detection, follow that method rather than inventing a test. Never test sharpness by sliding a fingertip along the edge. Keep the blade pointed away while wiping away residue or changing sides.

4. Refine and stop

Once the edge is restored according to the maker’s guidance, stop sharpening. Gerber recommends frequent, light sharpening and warns that over-sharpening can cause premature blade deterioration. More passes are not automatically better. Clean and dry the tool using the manufacturer’s care instructions before folding it away.

How to sharpen a serrated multi-tool blade

Use a rod that fits the scallops

A narrow round or diamond rod can work along individual grooves. Choose a diameter that contacts the curved bevel without flattening the tooth. A serration-specific system is preferable when the manufacturer offers one because it is designed to preserve the edge’s geometry.

Sharpen from the edged side only

Work each scallop separately, following the existing curve and the model’s stated angle. Leatherman specifies 20 degrees one-sided for its serrated sections and says to sharpen only the edged side. Its warning is explicit: “Sharpening the flat (back) side of the blade will cause the serrations to wear away, reducing the blade’s effectiveness.” Do not run a flat stone across the back merely to make it look polished.

Move from groove to groove

  1. Place the rod in the first scallop at the bevel’s existing angle.
  2. Use light strokes that follow the groove rather than forcing the rod sideways.
  3. Move to the next scallop and repeat, keeping the number of passes similar across the blade.
  4. Inspect the back for the edge condition only as the manufacturer directs. Gerber describes checking for a burr on the reverse side after working the serrations, but another maker may specify a different method.

Do not use the same flat-edge motion on every tooth. Each scallop is a separate curved surface, and flattening it changes how the serration cuts.

How to handle a combination edge

Separate the task into two zones. Sharpen the plain section with the compatible stone, rod, or guide at its specified angle. Then switch to the narrow rod or serration system for each scallop. Keep the transition area visible so you do not drag a flat abrasive into the first serration or a round rod across the plain bevel.

If the tool’s manual gives different angles for the two zones, record them before starting. A combination blade is not evidence that one compromise angle is safe; the geometry still changes at the boundary.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Symptom or mistake Likely cause Correction
The edge is dull after many passes The abrasive is not contacting the bevel at the correct angle Recheck the model instructions and whether the stated angle is per side or included; reset the guide or rod
Serrations look flattened A flat abrasive was used on the back or across the teeth Stop removing material, return to a serration-specific rod, and follow the maker’s one-sided method
The blade shifts while sharpening The grip or clamp is incompatible or improvised Stop, secure the tool using the prescribed method, or use a service instead
A large amount of metal is being removed Excessive pressure, too many passes, or an angle mismatch Use lighter strokes, verify the bevel, and stop once the edge is restored
Only part of a combination edge cuts well The plain and serrated sections were treated as one geometry Work each section with its own compatible abrasive and angle
The blade has chips, a bent tooth, or other damage Sharpening cannot restore the original profile without substantial removal Stop and contact the manufacturer or a qualified sharpening service

When manufacturer service is the safer choice

Service is sensible when you cannot hold the small blade securely, the edge is damaged rather than merely dull, or the maker restricts sharpening to a particular steel or blade section. Confirm eligibility before mailing the tool; service programs are not automatically available for every model, country, or edge type.

Care after sharpening

  • Remove abrasive residue and dry the tool before closing or storing it.
  • Follow the model’s maintenance instructions for cleaning and lubrication rather than applying an unapproved product.
  • Use frequent, light touch-ups instead of waiting until the edge requires heavy material removal.
  • Store the tool so the blade cannot open unexpectedly and so the edge is not forced against hard surfaces.
  • Recheck the edge visually after use; a new nick or bent serration should be addressed before the next sharpening session.

A practical decision checklist

Use this sequence each time you maintain a multi-tool knife:

  1. Identify: make, model, steel if stated, and plain, serrated, or combination edge.
  2. Verify: the exact manual’s angle, direction, and warnings.
  3. Select: a flat abrasive or guide for plain sections and a correctly sized serration rod or system for teeth.
  4. Secure: the tool using a compatible clamp or a grip that keeps fingers outside the edge path.
  5. Sharpen: with light, consistent passes away from your body and other people.
  6. Inspect: each section without touching the edge and stop when cutting performance is restored.
  7. Escalate: to manufacturer service or a qualified professional if the blade is damaged, unstable, or outside your confidence and equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sharpen my Leatherman blade with a regular stone?

Leatherman says standard equipment such as a whetstone or rod can be used for its plain-edge sections, provided you maintain the specified 32-degree included angle (16 degrees per side). A regular flat stone is not the right tool for its serrated section; use a system that follows the curves and sharpen only the edged side.

Is 20 degrees the right angle for every serrated multi-tool?

No. The 20-degree one-sided value is Leatherman’s specification for its serrated sections. Another maker may publish a different angle or method. Identify the exact model before setting a guide or choosing a rod.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should a multi-tool blade be sharpened?

Sharpen when cutting performance begins to decline, using light maintenance passes rather than waiting for severe dullness. Gerber specifically recommends frequent, light sharpening and cautions that over-sharpening can prematurely deteriorate a blade.
