Use the narrowest option that fits the task: send a one-time location pin when someone only needs a meeting point; otherwise share live location with a named person for a specific duration, then verify and stop that individual share. “Private” limits who receives your location and how long the access lasts—it does not make the share invisible to the recipient.
Apple Find My, Google Maps and Android’s Google Location Sharing all provide controls for a person-by-person stop. Do not rely on closing an app, disabling Timeline or merely pausing updates; those actions can leave an existing share active.
Plan the end before you tap Send. Decide who genuinely needs access, whether they need a moving position or only a fixed point, and what should happen if the journey finishes early. A short duration plus a final check is more reliable than trying to remember an open-ended share later.

Send a one-time location pin for a meetup
If you are telling someone where to meet you, send your current location from Messages rather than starting a live-location session. The recipient gets the point you sent, but there is no continuing stream of updates to end later. This is the least persistent option for directions, a pickup point or a meeting place.
A pin is also appropriate when you are already at the destination, giving a driver a pickup spot, or sharing a trailhead. It does not tell the recipient how you travel afterward. If your location changes and they need to follow that movement, send a new pin or switch to a deliberately timed live share instead of assuming the first message will update.
Use a timed live share when progress matters
Live sharing is appropriate when a trusted person needs to follow your journey, coordinate a moving group or know when you are likely to arrive. Choose a named recipient and the shortest duration that covers the task. A time limit is safer than starting an open-ended share and hoping to remember to turn it off.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuild in a little margin for delays, but do not choose an unlimited setting merely for convenience. For a one-hour trip, an hour or a modestly longer window may be enough; stop it as soon as the activity ends. If plans change, you can usually stop the person early and start a new, narrower share if necessary.
What “private” location sharing actually means
App-based sharing is private in the practical sense that you select the recipient and, where supported, an expiration time. It is not secret from that recipient. They may see your name, profile photo, recent device location and, in Google Maps, battery level or charging status. A recipient can also set an arrival or departure notification in Google Maps.
That means privacy has two dimensions: audience and persistence. A named contact limits the intended audience better than a URL, while a selected duration limits how long that person can receive updates. Neither control prevents the recipient from remembering, recording or acting on information they can already see. Share only with someone you trust for the stated purpose.
Location sharing and location history are separate features. Google Maps Location Sharing can continue to work while Timeline is disabled. Turning off Timeline therefore does not end a real-time share. Likewise, closing an app or signing out of an unrelated Google app is not the same as removing a recipient.

Before you share: four quick checks
- Confirm the audience. Read the selected name, account or conversation before sending. A group conversation, a copied URL or a similarly named contact can broaden access unintentionally.
- Choose the minimum useful duration. Select an hour, a journey window or another specific period rather than an indefinite option. If the platform cannot offer the exact period you need, choose the shortest practical duration and plan a manual stop.
- Choose the least detailed method. If a fixed point solves the problem, use a current-location pin. Live sharing exposes a continuing trail and, in Google Maps, additional device details.
- Know how you will end it. Keep the Find My or Location Sharing path in mind so you can stop access while you are still safe and connected.
Comparison of the available controls
| Option | Audience control | How long it lasts | What the recipient can get | How it ends | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Messages current-location pin | The person or conversation you send it to | One-time snapshot | The location contained in the message | No live share to cancel; delete or manage the message separately if needed | A meetup point or directions |
| Apple Find My | Named person selected in People | Duration selected when sharing; can be stopped early | Your Find My location while the share is active | People tab, select the person, then Stop Sharing My Location | Trusted contact following a trip or activity |
| Google Maps named-contact share | Selected contact with a Google Account/Gmail address | Duration selected when sharing; can be stopped early | Name, photo, recent location and battery/charging status; notifications may add arrival or departure information | Location Sharing, select the person, then Stop | Time-limited coordination with a known person |
| Google Maps link share | Anyone who obtains the link | Real-time access for up to 24 hours | Real-time location and the information Google displays to recipients | Stop the active share from Location Sharing; do not rely only on the link expiring | Only when a named-contact flow is not available and the link can be protected |
| Android Google Location Sharing switch | Existing recipient list remains unchanged | Pauses updates; does not remove shares | No new updates while paused, but the share remains configured | Use Stop beside each recipient; the switch alone is not an end | Temporary pause, not permanent cleanup |
Menu names can vary with the iOS or Android release, account type and app version. The important distinction is not the exact icon: look for the person-specific duration and Stop controls, and verify the resulting recipient list.
How to share your location for one hour
The exact labels can vary with iOS, Android, app and account versions. Look for a duration selector and confirm the recipient before sending.
iPhone with Find My
- Open Find My and select the People tab.
- Start a new location share and choose the person by name.
- Select the duration that covers the activity, such as one hour, instead of an indefinite option.
- Confirm the recipient and send. Check the People list to make sure the intended person is the one shown as active.
Find My is the live-sharing control. Sending a current location in Messages is a separate, one-time action and does not create the same continuing share.

If you need to hide your location from everyone briefly, Apple provides a hide-location control, but that hidden state is documented to resume automatically the next day. It is not a dependable substitute for ending one person’s access. Use the named person’s Stop Sharing My Location command when the share should be over.
Google Maps on iPhone or Android
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Location Sharing, then start a new share.
- Set the duration, such as one hour.
- Select the intended contact. The contact-based flow requires a Google Account or Gmail address.
- Review the recipient and duration, then send. Return to Location Sharing to verify that only the intended person appears in the active list.
If the person does not have a Google Account, Maps can create a link instead. Treat that link as bearer access: anyone who gets it can view the real-time location for up to 24 hours. Do not forward it to a group chat or post it where others can copy it.
For a known person who can use a Google Account, the named-contact route is preferable because access is tied to the selected account rather than simple possession of a URL. A link may be practical for a recipient who cannot use that flow, but it requires more care about where the URL is sent and who might copy it.
How to stop sharing your location with one person
Stop one person in Apple Find My
- Open Find My and tap People.
- Select the person whose access should end.
- Choose Stop Sharing My Location and confirm if prompted.
- Reopen the People list and verify that the person is no longer an active recipient.
When you stop, Apple says your location disappears from that person’s Find My, Maps, Contacts and Messages views. The person may notice that you stopped; some older operating systems can show a Messages notification. Stopping is therefore a visible change, not a guaranteed silent action.
If several people appear in People, stop each unneeded person individually. Turning off sharing for everyone is a broader action and may interrupt a legitimate safety contact, so use it only when that is actually your goal.

Stop one person in Google Maps
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Go to Location Sharing.
- Select the person in the active list.
- Tap Stop.
- Check the list again so you do not leave another recipient or an old link share active.
Closing Maps, signing out of a Google app or disabling Timeline does not perform this per-person stop. If you used a link, stop that active share too; deleting a text or email containing the URL does not revoke access for someone who already has it.
Stop a share in Android settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Location, then Location services.
- Open Google Location Sharing.
- Choose the person and tap Stop beside that recipient.
- Return to the recipient list and confirm the share has been removed.
This settings path is useful when you want to audit Google Location Sharing independently of the Maps screen. Review every listed recipient, not only the person you remembered sharing with most recently.
Why pausing is different from ending a share
Android’s Use Location Sharing switch controls updates, not the recipient relationship. Turning it off pauses location updates while leaving existing shares in place. If you turn the switch back on, those shares may resume. Use the individual Stop control when the task is finished or when you no longer want that person to have access.
A pause can be useful when you are temporarily offline or troubleshooting, but describe it accurately: the recipient relationship is still configured. If your phone reconnects or you re-enable the switch, updates can begin again without a new invitation. That is why a pause should never be your final privacy cleanup.

How to keep a link share from spreading
A link is different from a named-recipient invitation. Possession of the link is enough to access the real-time location, and Google documents a maximum access period of 24 hours for this link-based flow. The link does not know whether the person opening it is the person you had in mind.
- Use a named Google contact whenever the recipient has a Google Account.
- Send a link directly to one person rather than through a public post, group channel or shared document.
- Do not assume that deleting the message removes access for someone who already opened the link.
- Open Google Maps’ Location Sharing screen and stop the active share when the purpose ends, even if the 24-hour limit has not elapsed.
- Check for link previews, automatic forwarding or shared-device notifications that could expose the URL to someone else.
The 24-hour rule is a maximum for the documented link flow, not a reason to leave the share running. If the trip ends after twenty minutes, stop it after twenty minutes. Expiration is a backstop; it is not a substitute for an explicit stop.
What recipients may learn while a share is active
Before starting a live share, consider whether the extra metadata is acceptable. Google Maps states that a recipient can see the sharer’s name and photo, the device’s recent location (including when Google apps are not currently open), and battery power or charging status. A recipient can add an arrival or departure notification, which can expose those events to them.
These details can reveal more than your intended endpoint. Battery status may indicate whether you are still using a phone, while repeated location updates can show routines or a home address. Use a one-time pin when those details are unnecessary, and avoid sharing with a broad audience simply because live tracking is convenient.
Apple’s recipient experience is centered on the shared location in Find My and related Apple apps. The person can still notice when access disappears after you stop it. Explain the boundary clearly if the share is being used for a safety check or travel coordination.
Common mistakes and the correct fix
Starting an indefinite share by accident
Open the relevant People or Location Sharing list immediately, select the recipient and stop the share. For future sessions, choose a short duration before sending and set a reminder for the expected end of the activity.
Sending a link when a named contact was available
Stop the link share, then create a new share for the person’s Google Account. This limits access to the selected account flow instead of everyone who copied the URL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Turning off Timeline and assuming tracking stopped
Timeline records and real-time sharing are separate. Return to Google Maps’ Location Sharing, select each active person and tap Stop.
Switching off Android Location Sharing and calling it finished
The switch pauses updates but preserves the shares. Turn the switch back on if necessary, then stop each recipient individually in Settings > Location > Location services > Google Location Sharing.
Disabling all device location services
This can disrupt navigation, emergency features and other apps while failing to remove the configured recipient. Use the platform’s specific stop command instead of a device-wide shutdown.

Expecting the stop to be invisible
Apple explicitly warns that people you previously shared with may notice that you stopped. If privacy or personal safety is the reason for ending a share, plan for that visibility and use the direct stop control rather than relying on a hidden pause.
Forgetting a second recipient
People often remember the person they intended to help and forget an older share. After every trip, inspect the complete active list, including any link-based share, and stop entries that no longer have a purpose.

- Unknown or changing end time: choose the shortest reasonable duration and stop manually when finished.
- Recipient lacks a Google Account: use a link only if you can keep it private and accept the 24-hour maximum.
- Task completed: open the active-share list and confirm the person or link is stopped.
- Temporary pause needed: understand that Android’s switch pauses updates but does not delete the share.
- Safety-sensitive situation: anticipate that a recipient may notice an Apple share ending and make a plan before stopping it.
- Changing devices or accounts: recheck the active list after signing into a different phone or account because the control may be tied to the account that created the share.
Questions to answer before you tap Send
How do I share my location for one hour?
In Find My, choose the person in People and select a one-hour duration. In Google Maps, open Location Sharing, start a share, select one hour and choose the contact. Verify the active recipient afterward.
Can I send my location once without live tracking?
Yes. Send a current-location pin in Messages. Do not start a Find My or Google Maps live share when the recipient only needs a fixed meeting point.
Can someone see when I stop sharing?
They may. Apple says previous recipients may notice that sharing stopped, and older operating systems may display a Messages notification. Treat stopping as potentially visible.
Does turning off Timeline stop Google Maps location sharing?
No. Timeline and Location Sharing are separate. Stop the person from the Location Sharing screen.
Is a Google Maps link private?
Not in the same way as a named contact. Anyone who obtains the link can access the real-time location for up to 24 hours. Send it only to the intended person, protect it from forwarding and stop the active share early when finished.
What does Android’s Use Location Sharing switch do?
It pauses location updates while leaving existing shares configured. Turning it back on can allow those shares to resume. To end access, open Google Location Sharing and tap Stop beside the person.
Can I stop only one person instead of everyone?
Yes. Find My and Google Maps provide a person-specific selection followed by Stop Sharing or Stop. Review the list afterward so a different recipient or link is not still active.
What if the menu looks different on my phone?
Labels can differ by operating system, app version and account. Look for the People or Location Sharing list, a duration selector when starting, and a person-specific Stop command. Avoid substituting device-wide Location Services or Timeline controls for that command.

Use Find My’s People tab or Google Maps’ Location Sharing, select the named recipient, choose a one-hour duration and verify the active list. Menu labels can vary by software version.
Can I share a location without creating live tracking?
Yes. Send a current-location pin in Messages when the recipient only needs a fixed meeting point. Do not start a Find My or Google Maps live share.
Can someone tell when I stop sharing my location?
They may. Apple says previous recipients may notice, and older systems may show a Messages notification. Stopping is not guaranteed to be silent.
Does disabling Google Maps Timeline end a location share?
No. Timeline and real-time Location Sharing are separate. Open Location Sharing, select the person and tap Stop.
Are Google Maps location links private?
They are bearer links: anyone who gets the URL can access the real-time location for up to 24 hours. Prefer a named Google contact when possible and stop the link early.
Does Android’s Use Location Sharing switch delete recipients?
No. It pauses updates while leaving shares configured; turning it back on may resume them. Use Stop beside each person to end access.
How do I stop sharing with only one person?
In Find My, open People, select that person and choose Stop Sharing My Location. In Google Maps, open Location Sharing, select the person and tap Stop.

When the task ends, open the active-share list and stop that person or link directly. A paused switch, disabled Timeline, closed app or device-wide location shutdown is not a reliable substitute for ending the specific share.
