Google Maps is the right choice for continuous, real-time location sharing. Open Maps, go to Location sharing, choose a recipient and duration, then tap Share. Waze’s documented Send Location command sends your current map position or a selected place; its help instructions do not establish continuous live tracking. If you are driving to a destination, Google Maps can instead share trip progress until you arrive or stop navigation.
Waze and Google Maps share different kinds of locations
The two apps are not interchangeable for this task. Waze documents sending a map location: either your current position, a saved place, or a location from navigation history. Google Maps has a separate Location sharing feature designed for an ongoing, real-time share with a selected person for a selected period.

Use this when you want someone to receive where the Waze map currently places you. It is a point-in-time location send, not a documented always-on tracking session.

- Open Waze on your phone and wait for the map to show your current position.
- Tap the current-position arrow or blue dot.
- Tap Send Location.
- Choose the method you want to use to send it.
The recipient receives the location through the sending method you selected. Before sending, check that the blue dot or arrow is actually at your current position; if the map has not acquired a reliable position, the shared point may be stale or inaccurate.
Send a saved place from Waze
To share a destination or another place stored in Waze rather than your current position:
- Open the search bar.
- Tap Saved.
- Tap the more-options icon beside the saved place.
- Choose Send location.
- Select how to send the place.
This sends the selected saved place. It does not turn on live tracking of your movement.
Send a place from Waze navigation history
- Swipe up to display your navigation history.
- Long-press the relevant place.
- Tap Send location.
- Choose a sending method.
Use this workflow when the location you need to send is a previous destination rather than the point where you are now.
Using Waze in a car
Waze says to share from the phone when you are using the car interface. If Waze is running through Android Auto or CarPlay, disconnect the phone first and perform the share on the handset. The documented cross-app location-sharing workflow is currently unsupported on Android Automotive and CarPlay; the phone-based instructions cover Android Auto and phone use, and Waze also provides an iPhone/iPad workflow.

How to share your real-time location in Google Maps
Google Maps’ Location sharing feature is the appropriate option when another person needs to see movement over time. The basic sequence is the same on Android and iPhone/iPad, although labels and prompts can change as the apps are updated.
Direct sharing with a Google contact
- Open Google Maps on your phone or tablet and sign in to your Google Account.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Location sharing.
- Tap New share.
- Choose how long you want to share.
- Select the recipient.
- Tap Share.
Google’s Android instructions are published at Google Maps Help: Share your real-time location with others in Google Maps (Android). The iPhone/iPad instructions are at Google Maps Help: Share your real-time location with others in Google Maps (iPhone/iPad).

For direct sharing, Google asks you to have the recipient’s Gmail address in Google Contacts. If Maps asks for access to your contacts, allow it if you want to select that person directly. Review the displayed recipient and duration before confirming; those two choices determine who can follow the share and for how long.
Share with someone who does not have a Google Account
Use the link-sharing option in the location-sharing flow. You can send the generated link through your preferred messaging or email app. Google says a person without a Google Account can use the link, and the link-based real-time share can expose your location for up to 24 hours. The recipient does not need to install Google Maps to open the link, but anyone who obtains it may be able to view the shared location during its validity, so send it only through a channel you trust.
Stop a Google Maps location share early
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Location sharing.
- Tap the recipient whose access you want to end.
- Tap Stop.
Stopping the share removes that recipient’s access before the selected end time. If you created more than one share, check each listed recipient and stop any session you no longer need.

Duration, age and account limitations
Google Maps availability can depend on your region, account age and Workspace administrator settings. If Maps will not let you share directly for more than 24 hours, Google advises verifying your age; the recipient must have a Gmail account for a share lasting longer than 24 hours. Workspace administrators can also restrict location-sharing features for accounts in their organization. Because eligibility and interface labels can vary, rely on the duration shown on your screen instead of assuming that every account offers the same choices.

How to share trip progress during navigation
Trip progress is different from an open-ended location share. It is designed for someone who wants your current position, destination and estimated arrival time while you are actively traveling.
- Set a destination in Google Maps.
- Start navigation by car, on foot or by bicycle.
- Swipe up on the information card at the bottom of the map.
- Choose Share trip progress.
- Select the recipient.
- Tap Share.
Maps shares the destination, estimated arrival time and current location. The share ends automatically when you reach the destination or stop navigation. To end it sooner, open the navigation information card and tap Stop sharing.
Choose trip progress when the recipient only needs updates for this journey. Choose Location sharing when you want a separately controlled duration that is not dependent on reaching a destination.

- Your name and profile photo.
- Your recent device location, including when Google apps are not currently being used.
- Your device’s battery level and whether it is charging.
- Your arrival or departure time if the recipient sets a Location Sharing notification.
Explain this scope before sharing with someone who only needs a meeting point. If a single destination is all they need, Waze’s current-location or place send, or a normal place share from Maps, may reveal less ongoing information than real-time location sharing.
Check who has access
Open Location sharing from your Google Maps profile menu to see active recipients. Verify the name or account shown there, particularly when several contacts have similar names. Use Stop for any recipient who should no longer have access.
Use the shortest useful duration
When setting up a share, select only the period needed for the situation. A short meeting, pickup or walk usually does not require an all-day share. For a trip, trip progress automatically ends with navigation; for a continuing arrangement, choose a defined end time and revisit the list afterward.
Which workflow should you choose?

In short, Waze is suitable for sending a point or place. Google Maps is suitable for controlled, ongoing location visibility or navigation-bound progress updates.

Common problems and how to fix them
The Waze button is missing
- Confirm that you tapped the current-position arrow or blue dot, not an empty area of the map.
- If you are sharing a saved place, open Saved and use the more-options icon beside that specific place.
- If you are in Android Auto or CarPlay, disconnect the phone and use Waze on the handset, as Waze directs users to share from the phone.
- Remember that Waze’s documented action is named Send Location; do not look for a Location sharing menu equivalent to Google Maps.
Google Maps cannot find the recipient
- Check that you are signed in to the intended Google Account.
- Confirm that the recipient’s Gmail address is saved in Google Contacts for direct sharing.
- If Maps requests contact permission, allow access or use the link-sharing option instead.
- Check that your account is not subject to a Workspace administrator restriction and that age or regional requirements are met.
The share will not last as long as expected
Look at the duration displayed immediately before tapping Share. Link-based sharing to a person without a Google Account is limited to up to 24 hours. For direct sharing beyond 24 hours, Google says the recipient must have a Gmail account and advises verifying your age if the option is unavailable.

The recipient says the location is not updating
- Open Location sharing and verify that the recipient still appears in the active list.
- Check whether you accidentally selected a one-time Waze location instead of Google Maps real-time sharing.
- If you shared trip progress, confirm that navigation is still active; the session ends when you arrive or stop navigation.
- Ask the recipient to reopen the shared link or Maps view if it was sent through a messaging app that has not refreshed.
The map shows an old position
A Waze send-location message represents the map point at the time you sent it. It is not a live feed. For movement updates, create a Google Maps Location sharing session or use Share trip progress while navigating.
Send a Google Maps place to Waze
Google Maps can transfer a place into Waze so Waze can start or change navigation. This is a destination-transfer feature, not a method for sharing your live position with another person.
Waze documents the Android workflow at Share a location with Waze from Google Maps (Android) and the iPhone/iPad workflow at Share a location with Waze from Google Maps (iPhone/iPad). The documented cross-app workflow is currently unsupported on Android Automotive and CarPlay. If your goal is to tell someone where you are, use Waze’s Send Location or Google Maps’ location-sharing tools instead of transferring a destination between apps.

- Read the recipient name or address and the duration shown on screen.
- Use direct sharing only with the intended Google contact; use a link only when you can control who receives it.
- Tell the recipient whether they are receiving a single map point, a navigation-bound progress feed or an ongoing real-time share.
- After a meeting or journey, open Location sharing and stop any session that should not remain active.
- If a workplace or school Google Account is involved, check whether its administrator permits the feature.
App versions and labels can change, and availability can differ by region, account age and Workspace policy. If your screen does not match these paths exactly, look for the same named functions—Send Location, Location sharing, New share or Share trip progress—and confirm the recipient and duration before proceeding.
