Google Maps has two different sharing tools. Use Location sharing when someone should be able to follow your device for a chosen period. Use Share trip progress when you are navigating to a destination and want someone to see the destination, estimated arrival time (ETA), and current position until the trip ends.
Both tools are available in the Google Maps app on Android and iPhone/iPad. Real-time sharing must be started from a mobile device. A recipient does not always need a Google Account: a link can provide real-time access for up to 24 hours.
Choose the right Google Maps sharing method
The two workflows solve different problems. Selecting the wrong one can expose your location longer than intended or fail to provide the ETA someone is waiting for.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Workflow | Best for | How it starts | What is shared | When it ends |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Location sharing | Ongoing visibility for a selected period | Maps profile menu, then Location sharing and New share | Recent device location, sharer name and photo, battery level and charging status; notification-based arrival and departure times may also be available | At the duration you choose, or when you stop it manually |
| Share trip progress | A single journey where the recipient needs your destination and ETA | Start supported navigation, open the navigation information card, then Share trip progress | Destination, estimated arrival time and current location | Automatically when you reach the destination or stop navigation; you can stop it sooner |
Google describes the control this way: “You can choose who can find your location and how long you share it in Google Maps.” Decide whether the person needs a temporary trip update or continuing access before you begin.

What you need before sharing
- The Google Maps app must be installed on an Android phone or an iPhone/iPad.
- You must be signed in to Google Maps to start either sharing workflow.
- Location services and the app’s location permission need to work well enough for Maps to determine your position.
- For trip progress, set a destination and begin navigation by car, foot or bicycle first.
- For ongoing Location sharing, decide the recipient and duration in advance. The available duration is selected inside the sharing flow.
- If the recipient has no Google Account, plan to send a link by text, email or another messaging app. Link-based access lasts up to 24 hours.
A mobile device is required to start real-time sharing. Google says some sharing settings can be controlled from a computer, but the initial real-time share must be started in the mobile app.
How to share your live location continuously
These steps apply to the Google Maps app on both Android and iPhone/iPad. Menu names can change slightly as Google updates the app, but the path is the same.
- Open Google Maps and sign in.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
- Choose Location sharing.
- Tap New share.
- Choose how long you want to share your location. Treat this as the access window for the recipient, not merely a reminder; the share remains active until that period expires or you stop it.
- Select the person who should receive the share.
- Tap Share and check that the person appears in the active-sharing list.
The selected person can follow the share while it is active. If you later change your mind, you can stop access from the same Location sharing screen.
Share with someone who does not have a Google Account
In the Location sharing flow, choose the option to create a sharing link instead of selecting a Google contact. Send that link through a text message, email or another messaging app. Anyone who has the link can use it to view the real-time location for up to 24 hours, according to Google Maps Help.
The 24-hour limit applies to link-based access; do not describe the link as permanent or as an indefinite alternative to account-based sharing. If the person needs access after the link expires, create a new share or use an account-based recipient where available.

What the recipient can see
Location sharing can reveal more than a dot on a map. Google says a recipient may see:
- Your name and profile photo.
- Your device’s recent location, including when Google apps are not currently being used.
- Your device’s battery power and whether it is charging.
- Arrival and departure times when the recipient adds a Location Sharing notification for a place and that notification is supported for the account and share type.
Explain this scope before sharing with someone who only needs a one-time check-in. A live share can communicate whether the phone is moving, when it last reported, and whether its battery is close to running out.
How to share trip progress and ETA while navigating
Share trip progress is designed for a journey already underway. It sends a temporary update without requiring you to create a longer-running location share.
- Open Google Maps, search for your destination and select it.
- Choose a supported travel mode: car, walking or bicycle.
- Tap Start to begin navigation.
- Swipe up on the navigation information card at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Share trip progress.
- Select the person who should receive the update.
- Tap Share.
The recipient receives your destination, estimated arrival time and current location. Because the share is tied to navigation, the ETA can change as Maps recalculates the route.
Stop trip-progress sharing before arrival
- Swipe up on the navigation information card.
- Tap Stop sharing.
Otherwise, Google ends the trip-progress share when you reach the destination or stop navigation. Google states: “When you reach your destination or stop navigation, you stop sharing your location.” Ending navigation is therefore also the automatic end point for this workflow.

How to stop an ongoing live-location share
A continuous Location sharing session does not depend on navigation. Stop it explicitly when the recipient no longer needs access.
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Location sharing.
- Select the person whose access you want to end.
- Tap Stop.
After you stop the share, the recipient no longer receives the active Location sharing updates. Any Location Sharing notifications associated with that share also stop when location sharing stops.
Location Sharing notifications: useful, but limited
A recipient can add a notification for a selected place, such as an arrival or departure alert. This can be useful when someone wants to know that you reached a destination without repeatedly opening the map.
- Notifications depend on the recipient adding them to an active Location sharing relationship.
- Google says they are unavailable for some account types.
- They are not available for link-based sharing.
- Notifications stop when the underlying location share stops.
If the recipient is using a link, do not promise arrival alerts. The link can provide live location for up to 24 hours, but it does not provide the same notification controls as an eligible account-based share.
Why Location sharing may be unavailable
If the Location sharing option is missing, disabled or refuses to start, the cause may be an account or regional limitation rather than a problem with the map itself.

Country or region restrictions
Google lists country or region availability as one possible reason the feature cannot be used. Availability can differ by where the account or device is being used, so a person in another country may not see the same controls.
Google Workspace restrictions
An organization-managed Google Workspace account can have Location sharing restricted by its administrator or domain policy. If personal accounts can share on the same phone but a work account cannot, the Workspace policy is a likely explanation.
Account-age requirements
Google also identifies account age requirements as a possible limitation. A newly created or age-restricted account may not be eligible even when the app is current.
Starting from a computer
Google’s computer help documentation says a mobile device is required to start real-time sharing. A computer may expose some controls, but it cannot replace the initial mobile setup. Open the Maps app on the phone if the web interface does not offer the New share control.
Basic checks before trying again
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended Google Account.
- Open the mobile Maps app rather than relying only on a desktop browser.
- Check that the person you selected is the intended recipient; account-based and link-based sharing have different capabilities.
- If you are navigating, verify that a destination is set and navigation has actually started before looking for Share trip progress.
- If a share has ended, create a new one instead of assuming the old recipient still has access.
Location sharing versus trip progress: practical decisions
Use Location sharing when the time window matters
Choose ongoing Location sharing when a person needs to monitor you beyond one route, such as during a long outing with several stops. You select a duration and a recipient, and the share remains active independently of navigation. This is also the workflow to use when you want to share with someone who is not currently traveling with you and does not need an ETA.

Use trip progress when the destination and ETA matter
Choose Share trip progress when someone is waiting for you at a destination. It is quicker during an active route and automatically ends when you arrive or stop navigation. The recipient gets the destination and ETA along with your current location, rather than a general time-limited location relationship.
Use a link only when the 24-hour limit fits
A link is useful for a person without a Google Account, but access is limited to up to 24 hours. It also does not support Location Sharing notifications. For longer or notification-enabled sharing, use an eligible account-based recipient instead.
Privacy and safety checks before you tap Share
- Set the shortest useful duration. A longer duration leaves more time for the recipient to see your recent location, battery state and charging status.
- Choose the recipient carefully. Account-based shares go to the selected person; link shares can be opened by anyone who obtains the link.
- Explain what is visible. The recipient may see your name, photo, recent location and battery details, not just your current street position.
- Stop the share when the purpose ends. Trip progress normally ends with navigation, while ongoing Location sharing requires expiration or a manual Stop action.
- Do not rely on an old ETA. Trip progress is tied to the active route, and the estimated arrival can change as navigation updates.
- Check notifications separately. Arrival and departure alerts are an optional recipient feature and may not be available for every account or any link-based share.
Common situations and the fastest choice
“I am driving to meet someone and want them to know when I will arrive.”
Start car navigation, open the navigation information card, choose Share trip progress and select the person. The recipient receives the destination, current location and ETA, and the share ends when you arrive or stop navigation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“A family member wants to follow my location for several hours, including stops.”
Use Location sharing from the profile menu, choose a duration long enough for the outing and select the person. This share is independent of any single navigation route.
“The recipient does not use Google services.”
Create a Location sharing link and send it through the recipient’s usual messaging app. Tell them that the link works for up to 24 hours and does not provide the same notification options as an eligible account-based share.
“I shared my location earlier and want to revoke access now.”
Open profile picture or initial > Location sharing, select the person and tap Stop. Do not wait for the chosen duration to expire if access is no longer appropriate.
“I cannot find Share trip progress.”
That control appears during supported car, walking or bicycle navigation. Set a destination and tap Start first, then swipe up on the navigation information card. It is not the same menu as profile picture or initial > Location sharing.
