To share eligible digital Xbox games with family, sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that owns the games on the family console, then open Profile & system > Settings > General > Personalization > My home Xbox and choose Make this my home Xbox. Other people who use that designated console can then access eligible Microsoft Store games, downloadable content, and games downloaded through an eligible subscription. The account can have only one Home Xbox at a time.
The detailed procedure and limits below follow a Microsoft Community answer last updated June 10, 2025. Xbox’s support page for “My home Xbox” may not display its article text in every browser, so use the labels shown on your console if they differ.
What Home Xbox game sharing actually does
Home Xbox assigns the console-level licenses for one Microsoft/Xbox account to a single Xbox console. Once a console is designated, other profiles using that console can use eligible digital games and downloadable content owned by the account. They can also use games that the account downloaded through an eligible subscription, subject to that title and subscription’s own terms.
The account owner does not have to remain signed in for other users to use the shared licenses on the designated Home Xbox. The Microsoft Community guidance also says downloaded games can be played offline on the Home Xbox, provided the console was designated before it went offline. This is a console-license feature, not a transfer of ownership to each family member’s account.

What Home Xbox does not automatically share
Some purchases are account-specific rather than console-licensed. The cited guidance gives in-game currency bought inside Minecraft and certain one-time bonuses or special-edition content as examples that may not be shared. If a particular add-on, currency balance, bonus item, or special edition matters to your family, check that game’s purchase and licensing details instead of assuming Home Xbox covers it.
Online functions can also have separate requirements. Sharing a game license does not establish that every online mode, service benefit, or account-specific feature will work for every profile in the same way.
What you need before setting it up
- Access to the Microsoft/Xbox account that owns the digital games or eligible subscription access.
- The Xbox console that your family should use as the account’s Home Xbox.
- The games or downloadable content downloaded, or available to download, on that console.
- A clear decision about which console should receive the designation if your household has more than one.
Home Xbox is configured per account, not as a household-wide switch. If two adults own games on separate accounts, each account can designate a Home Xbox, but each account still has only one at a time. The sharing arrangement for one account does not change the license arrangement for another.
Set a console as your Home Xbox
- Use the intended family console. Turn on the Xbox that family members should be able to use when the owning account is absent or when the console may be offline.
- Sign in with the owning account. Use the Microsoft/Xbox account that purchased the digital games or has the eligible subscription downloads. A different family member’s account cannot designate the owner’s Home Xbox for that owner.
- Open the personalization settings. From the Xbox dashboard, open Profile & system > Settings > General > Personalization > My home Xbox.
- Choose “Make this my home Xbox.” Confirm the change when Xbox presents the option. The console is now the Home Xbox for the signed-in account.
- Download the games and content. While signed in with the owning account, install the games and downloadable content the household needs. The guidance specifically describes offline use for games that have been downloaded before the console goes offline.
- Test with a different family profile. Sign out of the owner account or switch to another household profile, then start one of the eligible games. A successful launch confirms that the console-level license is being recognized for that title.
Menu wording can change with Xbox system updates. If you do not see exactly these labels, look in Settings under General and Personalization for the My home Xbox page rather than repeatedly changing consoles.

Choose the right console in a multi-console household
Because one account can designate only one Home Xbox, the choice matters when a household has two or more consoles. The cited guidance recommends assigning the designation to the console used most frequently. That is a practical recommendation, not a newly verified Microsoft policy, but it matches how the license works: other profiles receive the account’s console-level access on that one machine.

Example: two consoles, one game-owning account
Suppose the account owner has a living-room Xbox and a second Xbox used by children. If the children need to play the owner’s downloaded games while the owner uses another console, designate the children’s console as Home Xbox. The owner can still access the account’s content on another console while signed in with the owning account, but other profiles on that second console do not receive the same Home Xbox entitlement.
Understand the one-console and change limits
Only one Home Xbox at a time
An account cannot keep two Home Xbox consoles active simultaneously. When you designate a new console, the account’s console and device licenses move to that newly selected Xbox. Other users then lose Home Xbox access to the account’s content on the previous console.

The account owner can still use the games on another Xbox by signing in with the owning account. That is different from sharing: the owner’s own account access follows the sign-in, while the console-wide benefit follows the one Home Xbox designation.

The cited five-change rolling limit
The Microsoft Community answer reports a limit of five Home Xbox changes in a rolling one-year period. It describes the period as beginning with the first switch and says the console displays the next eligible date after the limit is reached. This is a product rule reported in that community answer, not an independently published statistic.
Xbox’s accessible support page did not expose the detailed article text when this guidance was checked. Before making a nonessential switch, open the My home Xbox page on your console and review the message it shows, including any next eligible date. Treat the on-console notice as the authority for your account’s current allowance.
How offline play fits into sharing
Home Xbox can be useful for a family member who needs to play while the console is disconnected, but the order matters. The cited guidance says the console must already be designated as the account’s Home Xbox and the games must be downloaded before going offline.

- Download the games the household may need.
- Switch to the family member’s profile and test an eligible game while online.
- Only then test the console offline.
An offline test for one game does not prove that every title, add-on, or online feature will behave identically. Online modes, cloud-connected functions, account-specific items, and subscription checks can have requirements beyond the console license.

Troubleshoot common sharing problems
A family profile sees a lock or purchase prompt
- Sign in with the account that bought the game and open Settings > General > Personalization > My home Xbox to confirm that this is the designated console.
- If another console was recently designated, remember that the previous console no longer receives Home Xbox access for other users.
- Confirm that the game is an eligible digital purchase or an eligible subscription download. A title-specific license can exclude an add-on or special entitlement even when the base game is shared.
- After confirming the setting, download the game on the Home Xbox and test it from the family member’s profile.
The game works online but not offline
- Check that the console was made Home Xbox before it lost its connection.
- Check that the game was fully downloaded before going offline.
- Try another eligible downloaded title. If only one game fails, consult that game’s own licensing and offline requirements rather than changing Home Xbox again.
Downloadable content is missing
First verify that the downloadable content belongs to the same purchasing account and is installed on the Home Xbox. If the missing item is in-game currency, a one-time bonus, or special-edition content, it may be account-specific and therefore unavailable to another profile even though the base game is shared.
The Home Xbox menu looks different
System updates can alter navigation labels. Start at Profile & system > Settings > General > Personalization and locate My home Xbox. If the wording or confirmation screen differs, read the current on-console explanation before accepting a change.
The account has reached its change limit
Do not keep attempting switches. The cited answer says the console displays the next eligible date after the five-change rolling limit is reached. Keep the current designation until that date unless Xbox presents a different, account-specific instruction.
Use Home Xbox without disrupting the household
- Decide first, switch second. A temporary test can consume one of the account’s changes.
- Keep the owner account associated with its purchases. Family profiles should use their own accounts; the owner account is needed to establish the Home Xbox license.
- Download before travel or an outage. The cited offline guidance depends on prior designation and downloaded games.
- Check special content separately. Currency, one-time bonuses, and special-edition items can follow the purchasing account rather than the console.
- Record which console is designated. This prevents a family member from changing the setting on another Xbox and unintentionally removing shared access from the main household console.
Questions to answer before you change the setting
Can two Xbox consoles share the same account’s games at the same time? The account can have only one Home Xbox. Other users receive console-wide sharing on that designated Xbox; the account owner can use another console while signed in with the owning account.

Do family members need the owner’s profile to play on the Home Xbox? The purpose of the Home Xbox designation is to let other users on that console access eligible shared content without relying on the owner being signed in. They should use their own profiles for their own saves and account activity.
Does Home Xbox share every purchase? No. Eligible digital games, downloadable content, and qualifying subscription downloads are the core categories described by the guidance. In-game currency and some one-time or special-edition bonuses may remain tied to the purchasing account.
Will every shared game work offline? The cited guidance says downloaded games can be played offline on the Home Xbox when designation happened before disconnection. It does not establish identical offline behavior for every title or online feature.
