Before sharing a wildlife photo, check both the image file and the post: remove GPS data from a copy, leave out map pins and identifying captions, inspect the frame for clues, and delay or skip a post if it could draw attention to a vulnerable animal. No single privacy setting covers every place an image may be shared.
Why a photo can reveal more than its caption
A digital photo may contain metadata recording when and where it was taken. GPS coordinates can be stored in EXIF data, so a picture with no location mentioned in its caption may still carry location information in the file. The Nature Conservancy explains how GPS and other details can be recorded in image metadata in its guide to using social media without harming nature.
There are also separate clues outside the file metadata: a social post can have its own location tag, a caption can name a site, and distinctive features in the frame may identify a place. These are different exposure routes, so removing metadata alone does not make a post anonymous.

Use a layered check before sharing
- Prevent location capture when practical. If your camera or phone lets you disable location recording for photos, consider doing so before photographing sensitive wildlife. The exact controls vary by device and software; there is no universal menu path. Audubon describes preventing location capture as one point at which photographers can protect sensitive details in its responsible bird photography guidance.
- Prepare a separate copy for sharing. Inspect the copy you intend to post for GPS or other location fields, then remove them if present using a suitable photo-management or editing workflow. The Nature Conservancy discusses editing EXIF/IPTC data and names Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom, and Aperture as examples; those examples come from a 2019 article and are not a current product recommendation. Check the exported copy rather than assuming an edit took effect.
- Check the post itself. Do not add a map pin or precise place name. Avoid caption details that identify a nest, den, roost, or sensitive habitat. Also inspect the image for recognizable landmarks, signs, or buildings that could give away the site; the available guidance supports taking visual clues seriously but does not quantify how often they reveal a location.
- Decide whether the image should be public now. Consider delaying or withholding a post if it could attract people who disturb wildlife. This is especially relevant around breeding or nesting activity and when young are present. Guidance from Audubon, Alberta, and iNaturalist supports caution, but does not establish one delay period that is safe for every species and situation.
- Inspect the final result. Review the exported or uploaded image and the post’s location settings. Do not assume a platform removes every metadata field: policies and behavior can vary by service, upload path, and time.
Choose the right approach for the situation

Protecting a sensitive observation on iNaturalist
iNaturalist offers open, obscured, and private geoprivacy options. Its Help page on sensitive-species locations says obscured mode displays a randomly chosen point within a 0.2 × 0.2 degree rectangle containing the true location. iNaturalist describes that rectangle as about 500 square kilometres at the equator; the area varies by latitude, so the figure is not a fixed-radius guarantee. The observer can see the true coordinates while logged in.

With private geoprivacy, the coordinates are not publicly shown. These controls affect the observation’s location on iNaturalist; they do not, by themselves, remove GPS metadata from an uploaded photo file or protect a separate copy reposted elsewhere.
When someone needs the exact coordinates
Keep exact coordinates out of public comments and notes. If a trusted person or project has a legitimate need, iNaturalist suggests using a direct message or joining a project trusted with hidden coordinates. Its guidance on requests for hidden locations also makes clear that caution is appropriate. You are not obligated to share a precise location simply because someone asks.

Why the decision depends on the place and timing
Location disclosure can lead to disturbance even when no one intends to harm an animal: the Government of Alberta warns that geotagging can contribute to overcrowding sensitive habitats and disturb wildlife, particularly during breeding and nesting seasons. That makes the decision more specific than “Is this species rare?” Consider the animal, whether it has young, the sensitivity of the site, the timing, and the likely audience. The Nature Conservancy discusses this judgment in “Wildlife Sightings: Share or Stay Quiet?”. There is no measured harm rate or universally safe posting delay established by these sources.
