To let friends watch you play on PS5, start or join a party, open its voice chat card, select the Share Screen icon, and choose Start Share Screen. Friends in the party can open the notification or Share Screen card to watch. Share Screen is for watching; if you want a friend to take control or play alongside you, use Share Play instead.

What Share Screen does on PS5

Share Screen sends your game screen and game audio to other players in a party in real time. It lets friends follow what is happening without joining the game or taking control. PlayStation describes it as a way for players in a party to watch gameplay as if they were in the same room. PlayStation’s Share Screen instructions cover the setup and viewer controls.

The feature is limited to gameplay: viewers do not see other console screens or non-game apps. Some game scenes may also be unavailable for sharing, depending on the game. That means a friend might see a restricted scene rather than everything displayed on your TV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Share Screen is a party viewing feature, not a public broadcast. You choose the party and the people who can watch, and the stream remains connected to that party’s voice-chat experience. It is therefore useful for showing a friend a boss fight, letting a group follow a race, or asking for advice while you continue playing yourself.

What you need before starting

Set up the social part first: join an existing party or create one containing the friends who should be able to watch. The party is the audience for the share, so starting the feature before choosing the right party can send an invitation to the wrong group.

PlayStation’s Share Screen instructions do not identify a separate capture card, special controller, or headset as a requirement. The relevant controls are built into the PS5 party and Create menus. A headset can still be useful for voice chat, but the official setup does not tell you to buy an accessory to make Share Screen work.

Keep the distinction between watching and control in mind before you begin. Share Screen lets party members watch your game screen and audio. It does not hand them your controller, let them play your game, or turn the session into a cooperative Share Play session.

Start Share Screen from a party

The party voice chat card is the most direct route when the people you want to watch are already in a party with you.

  1. Start or join a party with the friends who should watch. If you are joining an existing party, make sure it is the one you intend to share with.
  2. Open the party’s voice chat card and select the Share Screen icon.
  3. Select Start Share Screen. The console notifies you and party members when sharing begins.

Once the share is active, your party members can use their own PS5 notification or Control Center card to open it. You do not need to start a separate broadcast for this party-viewing feature.

Before confirming, check the party members shown on the voice chat card. If the party includes people who should not see the gameplay, leave that party and create or join the intended one instead. The share follows the party context, so selecting the correct group is the practical privacy check.

Start from the Create menu

You can also press the controller’s Create button and choose Share Screen. If you are already in party voice chat, select Start Share Screen. If you are not in party voice chat, create or configure a party first, then start the share. This route is useful when you are in a game and want to begin sharing from the Create menu rather than navigating to the party card. The available route and labels are described in PlayStation’s PS5 instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Create route does not create a different type of stream. It is simply another doorway to the same Share Screen feature. You still need a party for the intended viewers, and the same limits apply: only the game screen and audio are shared, while other screens and non-game apps remain hidden.

Start from a friend’s profile

To invite one particular friend, open that friend’s profile, select the Share Screen icon, and start sharing to invite them. This is an alternative to starting from the party card; it does not change what the feature shares. If more people should watch, use the party route and include the intended viewers in the party.

This profile method is convenient for a one-to-one viewing request. For a group demonstration, the party voice chat card is clearer because it puts all intended viewers in one place and gives them the same notification and Control Center paths.

How friends watch on PS5

When someone in a party starts sharing, a party member receives a notification. On the viewer’s PS5:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
  2. Open Notifications and select the Share Screen notification to watch.

A Share Screen card also appears in the Control Center. In a joinable party, the ON AIR icon indicates that someone is sharing. Joining that party lets a viewer watch the share. These viewer routes are useful in different situations: the notification is a direct invitation cue, while the party indicator helps a player recognize an active share in a party they can join. See PlayStation’s viewer instructions for the console steps.

If the viewer is already in the party, opening the notification is usually the shortest path. If they missed or dismissed it, the Share Screen card in Control Center provides another route. The ON AIR indicator is useful when a player returns to a joinable party later and wants to see whether a share is currently active.

Request a friend’s screen

A viewer can request access instead of waiting for an invitation. From the party voice chat card, select the player whose screen you want to see and choose Request Share Screen. The request is for that player’s screen; it is not the same as starting a share from your own console.

This is a viewer-side action. It does not make the requester the host, and it does not expose the requester’s own game. If several people are in voice chat, select the specific player whose gameplay you want to watch so the request is directed to the correct screen.

Watch or request a share in PlayStation App

The PlayStation App also supports Share Screen requests and viewing. To request a friend’s screen, open Friends, select the friend’s online ID, then choose Request Share Screen. If the friend invites you, you can watch in the voice chat room. The stream may start automatically in that room or from its notification while the app is in the background. The app includes video resolution and autoplay settings. PlayStation documents these app features in its PlayStation App support guide.

If you are setting up viewing in the app, check its video resolution and autoplay options if playback does not behave as you expect. Those settings belong to app viewing; they do not change the host’s Share Screen controls on the PS5.

The app route is useful when a friend is away from the console but still wants to follow the party. The host still starts Share Screen on the PS5, while the mobile viewer uses the Friends list, online ID, voice chat room, or notification to reach the stream. Requesting from the app is also separate from requesting from the PS5 party voice chat card, even though both actions ask to see the same friend’s shared screen.

What viewers can and cannot see

Share Screen transmits the game screen and game audio. It does not show the PS5 home screen, settings, other applications, or other non-game activity. If you leave the game to use another console screen, viewers should not be treated as if they can see that activity.

Game developers can also mark particular scenes as unavailable for sharing. A viewer may therefore see a blocked or restricted scene while the host continues to see it locally. This is a game-level limitation rather than evidence that the party setup failed. Returning to a shareable portion of the game can restore the normal view.

Because Share Screen is not the same as a public broadcast, do not describe it as a way to publish every console action. Its scope is deliberately narrower: party members watch the game in real time, and the feature keeps non-game screens out of the shared view.

Optional viewer interactions

The host can enable Viewer Interactions from the Share Screen controls on the party voice chat card, either before sharing starts or while it is active. When enabled, viewers can move a pointer, ping or draw on the screen, and send reactions. These appear in real time to the host and viewers. The host can adjust reaction placement or turn interactions off. This is optional: a party can simply watch without using these controls. PlayStation lists the interaction controls in its Share Screen support instructions.

Interactions can make a coaching session more useful: a viewer can point toward an item, mark an area, or react to a moment without taking control of the game. They are overlays on the shared view, not edits to the game itself. If the screen becomes distracting, the host can change reaction placement or disable the feature while the share continues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable interactions only when the people in the party understand that their pointers, pings, drawings, and reactions will be visible in real time. If you want a quiet viewing session, leave Viewer Interactions off; watching does not depend on enabling them.

Share Screen or Share Play?

Choose based on what you want the other person to do. Share Screen is the straightforward choice when friends in a PS5 party only need to watch your gameplay. Share Play is the separate feature for giving a visitor control or playing together, and it is PlayStation’s documented route when a friend using PS4 needs to view a PS5 player’s screen.

Question Share Screen Share Play
Main purpose Let players in a party watch gameplay and game audio in real time. Let a visitor take control or play together, subject to game and account restrictions.
PS4 friend viewing a PS5 screen PlayStation’s instructions direct this case to Share Play. Use Share Play for the documented PS4-viewer case.
PlayStation Plus The Share Screen instructions do not identify a separate PlayStation Plus requirement. Starting Share Play requires PlayStation Plus; membership requirements for both players depend on the mode.
Session and other limits The cited Share Screen instructions do not state a one-hour session limit. A session is limited to one hour. Age, region, parental-control, and scene restrictions may also apply.

For Share Play setup and its mode-specific conditions, use PlayStation’s Share Play guide. Do not switch to Share Play merely because someone wants to watch on another PS5: for ordinary viewing among PS5 party members, Share Screen is the matching feature.

The PlayStation Plus distinction matters when planning a session. Share Screen’s cited instructions do not list a separate Plus requirement, whereas starting Share Play does require PlayStation Plus, with the exact membership rules depending on whether the mode is shared control or playing together. Share Play also has a one-hour session limit, while the Share Screen instructions cited here do not state that limit for ordinary viewing.

  • Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.

Age, regional availability, parental controls, and game-scene restrictions can affect Share Play. Those conditions belong to Share Play and should not be assumed to describe a normal PS5-to-PS5 Share Screen session. When a PS4 friend is the viewer, follow PlayStation’s Share Play guidance rather than trying to force the standard PS5 party-viewing path.

When the share or invitation is not visible

Use the symptom to identify which part of the process needs attention. These checks follow the documented sharing and viewing paths; they do not guarantee that a particular game scene can be shared.

  • The host cannot find the start control: open the party voice chat card and look for the Share Screen icon. Alternatively, use the Create button’s Share Screen option or start from a friend’s profile. If you are not in party voice chat after choosing the Create-menu route, create or configure a party before starting.
  • A party member has not opened the stream: have the viewer press the PS button, open Notifications, and select the Share Screen notification. They can also look for the Share Screen card in the Control Center.
  • A friend wants to watch but has not been invited: the viewer can choose the player in the party voice chat card and select Request Share Screen. In PlayStation App, the request route is Friends, the friend’s online ID, then Request Share Screen.
  • The party does not show an active share: check whether it is a joinable party and whether the ON AIR icon appears. PlayStation describes that icon as an indicator that someone in a joinable party is sharing.
  • The viewer sees a restricted scene: some scenes are unavailable for sharing depending on the game. Share Screen also does not expose other console screens or non-game apps.
  • The viewer is using PlayStation App: check the app’s video resolution and autoplay settings, and look for the stream in the voice chat room or its notification.
  • The wrong people can see the party: stop and verify the party membership before restarting. Share Screen follows the selected party, so correcting the party is more appropriate than repeatedly pressing the share control.
  • The host is trying to give control: stop looking for a Share Screen setting that hands over the controller. Share Screen is view-only; use Share Play for shared control or playing together, then review its Plus, one-hour, age, region, parental-control, and game restrictions.
  • A PS4 friend cannot use the ordinary viewer route: use Share Play, which PlayStation identifies for the PS4 viewer case, rather than treating the PS4 as another PS5 party viewer.

A practical start-to-finish checklist

  1. Decide whether the session is watch-only or requires shared control. Pick Share Screen for watching and Share Play for control or playing together.
  2. For Share Screen, start or join the party that contains the intended viewers.
  3. Open the party voice chat card and choose the Share Screen icon, then Start Share Screen. If you are already in a game, the Create button offers the same feature; a friend’s profile is another invitation route.
  4. Tell viewers where to look: PS button, Notifications, and the Share Screen notification; alternatively, the Control Center Share Screen card or the party’s ON AIR indicator.
  5. If someone cannot find the stream, have that person request the specific player’s screen from the party voice chat card. App users can request it through Friends and the friend’s online ID.
  6. Decide whether Viewer Interactions should be enabled. Turn them on for pointers, pings, drawings, and reactions, or leave them off for unobstructed viewing.
  7. Remember the content boundary: only game screen and audio are shared, and some game scenes may be blocked.

Cost, equipment, and platform considerations

Share Screen is a built-in PS5 feature. The official instructions do not identify a separate purchase, subscription, capture card, or dedicated accessory as necessary for the basic party-viewing workflow. Avoid buying equipment solely because you want friends in a PS5 party to watch your gameplay.

PlayStation Plus enters the comparison when you choose Share Play, not as a separate requirement identified in the Share Screen instructions. Starting Share Play requires PlayStation Plus, and the membership requirement can differ between Share Play modes and between the two players. Share Play also carries a one-hour session limit and other eligibility restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are evaluating whether to buy a PS5 platform for this feature, Share Screen is a console-level capability rather than a separately priced add-on. Retail prices, bundles, and availability change, so check the current PlayStation or retailer listing independently instead of treating the feature as a reason to purchase a particular accessory.

Choose the right setup

For a group of PS5 friends who want to watch, start from the party voice chat card and have viewers open the notification or Control Center card. For a single friend, the profile route can send an invitation, while a viewer can request a friend’s screen from the party card or PlayStation App. If the goal is shared control, playing together, or a PS4 friend viewing a PS5 player, use Share Play and check its separate eligibility and session conditions.

The shortest reliable workflow is therefore: choose the party, start Share Screen, and direct viewers to Notifications or the Control Center. Keep Viewer Interactions optional, expect game-specific blocked scenes, and do not confuse view-only sharing with Share Play’s control and co-play modes.

Can viewers draw or point at my gameplay?

Yes, if the host enables Viewer Interactions in the Share Screen controls. Viewers can move a pointer, ping or draw, and send reactions; the host can adjust reaction placement or turn interactions off.

Do I need PlayStation Plus for Share Screen?

The official Share Screen instructions do not identify a separate PlayStation Plus requirement. Share Play is different: starting Share Play requires PlayStation Plus, with mode-specific membership rules.

How long can a Share Screen session last?

The cited Share Screen instructions do not state a one-hour limit. Share Play, by contrast, has a one-hour session limit.

Can a friend on PS4 watch my PS5 screen with Share Screen?

PlayStation directs the documented PS4-viewer case to Share Play. Use Share Play and review its membership, session, age, regional, parental-control, and scene restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can my friend not see a scene I am playing?

Some scenes are unavailable for sharing depending on the game. This is a game-specific sharing restriction, not necessarily a problem with your party or Share Screen setup.

The Bottom Line

Start or join the correct PS5 party, open its voice chat card, choose the Share Screen icon, and select Start Share Screen. Friends watch from their notification or Control Center card, can request your screen, and may use optional interactions. Use Share Play instead when someone needs control, wants to play together, or is viewing from PS4.
