To share PlayStation Plus Extra games with family, sign in on the household PS5 with the account that has the subscription, then open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and choose Enable. Other profiles on that PS5 can then download eligible Game Catalog titles and play games purchased or downloaded by the subscribing account, including when the console is offline. Sony permits this setting on only one PS5 for that account at a time.
What PS Plus Extra sharing actually does
PS5 sharing is controlled by the subscriber account’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting. It is a console-level permission, not a family-group switch and not a way to attach one subscription permanently to several consoles.
When the setting is enabled on a PS5, anyone using profiles on that console can use the sharing account’s eligible downloaded games. That includes games the account bought from PlayStation Store and games downloaded through the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. The enabled PS5 can launch those downloaded titles while offline, provided the account’s entitlement is still valid.

What Extra adds to the arrangement
Extra membership gives the subscriber access to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. A second profile on the enabled PS5 can download a catalog game when all three conditions are true:
- The subscribing account has an active PlayStation Plus Extra membership (or another plan that includes that title).
- The game is still listed in the Game Catalog.
- The console is the PS5 on which Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled for that account.
Catalog availability is not a permanent license. If Sony removes a title, or the subscription expires or changes to a plan that does not include it, the shared profile can lose the ability to launch it. A game bought outright by the account is different: its purchase entitlement does not depend on remaining in the catalog, although normal platform and account checks still apply.
Limits you should know before setting it up
| Arrangement or feature | What the family member gets | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Other profile on the enabled household PS5 | Can play the sharing account’s downloaded purchases and eligible catalog downloads; offline play works for downloaded content. | Only one PS5 can have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled for that account. |
| Separate friend or relative’s PS5 | No shared access merely because the person is in your family group. | The documented sharing arrangement is tied to the one enabled PS5, not a second console. |
| Purchased game | Can be played by other profiles on the enabled PS5 after it is downloaded. | The purchase belongs to the buying account; it is not transferred to another account. |
| Extra Game Catalog title | Can be downloaded and played by other profiles on the enabled PS5 while eligibility continues. | The correct membership plan must remain active and Sony must continue listing the game. |
| Online multiplayer | Some Plus online-multiplayer benefits can be used by profiles on the enabled PS5 when the game requires Plus. | Age and parental-control rules still apply, and not every Plus benefit is shared. |
| Cloud or account benefits | No automatic transfer of the subscriber’s private account data. | Online storage, Plus discounts, redemption of Plus games on another account, automatic patch downloads and early access to time-limited trials are excluded. |
Set up sharing on the household PS5
Perform the setup on the console where your family members will play. You need the PlayStation Network sign-in details for the account that holds PlayStation Plus Extra.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Sign in to the PS5. Select the subscriber’s PlayStation Network profile. If the account is not already on the console, add it and complete sign-in.
- Open Settings. From the PS5 home screen, select the gear icon in the upper-right corner.
- Open Users and Accounts. This section contains account, family and sharing controls.
- Select Other. Choose the submenu that contains console activation options.
- Open Console Sharing and Offline Play. The page shows whether the feature is currently enabled for this PS5.
- Choose Enable. Confirm the change if prompted. If the account is enabled on another PS5, disable it there first or use Sony’s account-management option to deactivate devices.
- Leave the subscriber profile available. The account does not need to remain signed in while another profile plays, but the PS5 must retain the downloaded game and the account must continue to hold the entitlement.
Sony’s rule is one active PS5 for Console Sharing and Offline Play per account. The cross-generation arrangement also allows one primary PS4 under Sony’s rules, but enabling a second PS5 does not create a second shared PS5 entitlement.
Have another family member download an Extra game
Once sharing is enabled, the family member should use their own profile rather than playing permanently on the subscriber’s account. This keeps saves, trophies, accessibility settings and parental controls associated with the correct person.
- Sign in to the family member’s PS5 profile.
- From the Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Select Benefits, then choose Game Catalog.
- Find a title marked as included with the active membership plan.
- Open the game page and select Download.
- Wait for the installation to finish. The game can then be started from that profile’s library or the Games home screen.
The catalog page is the authoritative check for eligibility. A title that was previously included may have left the catalog, and an Extra subscriber cannot download a game that requires a higher membership plan. If the Download button is missing, verify the plan and the game’s current catalog listing before changing console settings.
What can be shared with family profiles
Purchased and downloaded games
Games purchased by the sharing account can be downloaded to the enabled PS5 and launched by other local profiles. The other profile does not become the owner and cannot use the purchase on an unrelated PS5 simply because it was downloaded on the household console.
Extra Game Catalog downloads
Catalog games behave like subscription entitlements. The family profile can use the installed game while the subscriber has the correct active plan and the title remains available. Removing the game and trying to reinstall it later will still require the catalog entitlement to be valid at that time.
Selected PlayStation Plus benefits
Some Plus benefits, including online multiplayer for games that require Plus, can be used by profiles on the enabled PS5. Sharing is selective rather than complete, so the family member should not expect every feature shown on the subscriber’s account page.

Offline play after download
Downloaded content can be played offline on the PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled. The initial sign-in, entitlement check and download require connectivity. Offline access does not preserve a catalog game after its membership or catalog eligibility ends.
Benefits that do not transfer
Sony specifically excludes several account-level benefits from console sharing:
- PlayStation Plus member discounts: A discount available to the subscriber does not become a discount on another account’s purchases.
- Redeeming Plus games on another account: A family profile cannot claim a monthly or other Plus game as its own permanent entitlement through sharing.
- Online storage: Cloud saves and other online-storage capacity remain associated with the account that owns the subscription.
- Automatic patch downloads: Sharing does not copy the subscriber’s automatic-download settings to another profile.
- Early access to time-limited game trials: Trial timing and eligibility do not become universally available to every profile on the PS5.
Each person who wants a separate account entitlement, private cloud storage or an account-specific discount must use the account to which that benefit belongs.
Family and child-account restrictions
Console sharing does not override family safety settings. A child account can see a shared game as unavailable even when the subscription, download and console activation are correct.
- The game’s age rating must be allowed by the parent or family manager.
- Parental controls can restrict launching, communication or online features.
- Online multiplayer remains subject to the child’s age and the family’s online-play settings.
- A title may be installed on the console but hidden or blocked for the child profile.
To diagnose a child-profile problem, first test the game from an unrestricted adult profile. If it launches there, review the child account’s age-rating and parental-control settings rather than repeatedly enabling and disabling console sharing.
Can you share Extra with someone on another PS5?
Not through the normal Console Sharing and Offline Play arrangement. Sony limits the shared games and selected Plus benefits to accounts on the one PS5 activated for sharing, along with the account’s primary PS4 under the cross-generation rule. Adding a person to your family group does not extend those benefits to that person’s separate PS5.

Catalog access versus a permanent purchase
Choosing between a catalog download and buying a game outright affects how long the family can use it.
| Question | Extra Game Catalog title | Purchased title |
|---|---|---|
| How is access obtained? | Download while the active membership plan includes the game. | The subscriber’s account buys a license and downloads it. |
| What can end access? | Membership expiry, changing to an ineligible plan or the game leaving the catalog. | The purchase remains associated with the buying account; catalog removal is irrelevant. |
| Can another local profile play? | Yes, on the PS5 enabled for Console Sharing and Offline Play while eligibility lasts. | Yes, on that same enabled PS5 after download. |
| Does the second profile own it? | No. | No; ownership remains with the buying account. |
This distinction explains why a family member may suddenly see a lock on a previously playable catalog game while a purchased game continues to start normally.

- Confirm who owns or downloaded the game. Sign in to the subscriber’s profile and verify that the purchased game is in its library or that the catalog title was downloaded through the eligible membership.
- Check Console Sharing and Offline Play. On the PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. It must show that sharing is enabled.
- Verify the subscription. Confirm that PlayStation Plus Extra is active and has not expired, been cancelled at renewal or changed to a plan that excludes the title.
- Check catalog status. Open the game’s PlayStation Plus Game Catalog page. If Sony has removed the title or the plan does not include it, sharing cannot restore access.
- Test the adult subscriber profile. If the game works for the adult but not for a child, inspect age-rating and parental-control settings.
- Check PlayStation Network service status. A temporary service interruption can prevent license validation even when the console configuration is correct.
- Install the latest PS5 system software. Outdated system software can interfere with account and entitlement checks.
- Restart the PS5. Shut down and restart the console, then retry the game from the family member’s profile.
If the account was recently activated on a different PS5, disable sharing there before enabling it on the household console. Repeatedly deleting and reinstalling the game will not fix a missing subscription, an expired catalog entitlement or a child-account restriction.
Changing the shared PS5
If the family moves the subscription to another PS5, sign in with the subscriber account on the new console and enable Console Sharing and Offline Play there. The old PS5 will no longer be the account’s shared console once the setting is changed.
When the old console is unavailable, Sony provides remote deactivation for devices through account management. Sony limits the remote deactivation of all devices to once every six months, so use it deliberately rather than as a routine troubleshooting step. After remote deactivation, sign in on the intended household PS5 and enable sharing locally.
Practical setups that work
One household, one PS5
This is the straightforward case: the subscriber enables sharing on the family PS5, downloads games through the subscriber account when necessary, and family members launch them from their own profiles. Purchased games and eligible Extra catalog games can coexist on the same console.

Only one PS5 can be the shared console for the subscriber account. Choose the console used most often by the other family profiles. On the second PS5, the subscriber can use their own account, but other profiles should not be expected to receive the same shared entitlement.
Parent and child profiles
Enable sharing on the PS5 used by the child, download the title while signed in with the subscriber account, then let the child start it from the child profile. If the title remains blocked, adjust age and parental settings only as appropriate for the child’s age.
Offline weekend or travel use
Download and install the games before going offline, and keep sharing enabled on that PS5. Offline play applies to downloaded content; it cannot add a game that was never downloaded or bypass a membership or catalog expiration.
Security and account hygiene
- Use each person’s own PS5 profile so saves and trophies are not mixed.
- Do not give out the subscriber password beyond the people who need to sign in on the household console.
- Review which PS5 is enabled whenever the console is sold, repaired or moved to another household.
- Remember that sharing grants selected console benefits, not ownership of the subscriber’s account or its private cloud data.
The reliable rule is simple: one subscriber account, one enabled PS5, and one entitlement check for every catalog game. If those three conditions remain true, other profiles on that console can use the downloaded games that Sony allows to be shared.
