Configure every PHP worker with the same session handler, the same comma-separated Memcached server pool, identical session-cookie settings, and compatible hashing, locking, and protocol options. With the php-memcached extension, a typical configuration is:
session.save_handler = memcached
session.save_path = "sess-a:11211,sess-b:11211,sess-c:11211"
memcached.sess_consistent_hash = On
memcached.sess_locking = On
Requests can then reach different application servers and still find a session by its key, without requiring load-balancer stickiness. Memcached improves shared-session availability and scalability, but it remains an in-memory cache: node loss, eviction, or an unsuitable expiration policy can still log users out.

What must be identical on every PHP worker
A shared session pool works only when all workers interpret and address sessions in the same way. Apply the following consistently to every PHP-FPM, Apache, or other PHP runtime that serves the application:
- The same session handler extension and compatible version.
- The same
session.save_pathserver list, including hostnames and ports. - The same session cookie name, path, domain, security flags, and related cookie policy.
- The same hashing, locking, replica, failover, and binary-protocol settings.
- The same
session.gc_maxlifetimepolicy, with enough Memcached capacity to retain active entries for that period.
If one worker uses a different cookie name or handler, it may create a separate session. If workers use different server lists or hashing rules, a request can calculate a different destination and appear to lose the session. A configuration that is correct on one host is not enough: the browser may be sent to any worker by the load balancer, so every worker must be able to resolve and reach every endpoint in the pool.

How requests find a shared session
The browser sends a session cookie, normally containing a session identifier, with each request. PHP uses that identifier as the lookup key for the configured handler. With a common Memcached pool, worker A can create the session and worker B can read it on the next request; no worker-local file or in-process memory is required.
Sticky load balancing can hide an incorrect setup because a user repeatedly returns to the same worker. Do not treat stickiness as a substitute for shared storage. Test with stickiness disabled or with requests deliberately distributed across workers. This exposes mismatched cookie settings, unreachable nodes, and inconsistent hashing before they affect production traffic.

1. Confirm which extension is installed
PHP has two similarly named extensions with different directives: memcached (the libmemcached-based php-memcached extension) and the older memcache extension. Check the loaded modules and the effective runtime configuration rather than assuming the package name. A web diagnostic page using phpinfo(), or the equivalent CLI configuration inspection, shows the loaded extension and values actually used by the SAPI serving requests.
Check the web SAPI separately from the command line. PHP-FPM pools, Apache modules, and CLI commands can load different php.ini files or drop-in directories. A successful CLI test therefore does not prove that the PHP process handling customer requests has the same handler, server list, or extension version.
2. Set the handler and server list
For php-memcached, set:
session.save_handler = memcached
session.save_path = "sess-a:11211,sess-b:11211,sess-c:11211"
The path is a comma-separated pool of hostname:port entries. Use names or addresses resolvable from every PHP worker, and make sure firewalls and network policies allow each worker to reach every listed Memcached endpoint. Keep the list and spelling identical across hosts; an alias that resolves differently on one machine can produce an effectively different pool.
3. Enable consistent hashing and locking
memcached.sess_consistent_hash = On
memcached.sess_locking = On
Current documented versions of php-memcached list consistent session hashing as enabled by default, but setting it explicitly makes the intended behavior clear and protects against an unexpected package default. Locking is also documented as enabled by default and should remain enabled for ordinary PHP sessions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. Reload every PHP runtime
Change the configuration in the file used by the serving SAPI, then reload or restart all PHP workers in the fleet. Change management should treat the handler, server list, and related directives as one unit. Leaving even one old worker in rotation can create intermittent logouts that disappear when traffic is routed elsewhere.

How consistent hashing affects node changes
With memcached.sess_consistent_hash = On, the extension uses libketama-style consistent hashing for session handling. The hash ring maps a session key to a node while limiting how many keys move when a server is added or removed. Where supported, memcached.sess_consistent_hash_type can select ketama or ketama_weighted; use the option only when the installed extension documents it.
Consistent hashing limits remapping; it does not replicate every session. If a session’s only copy was on a removed node, that session cannot be reconstructed from the hash ring. Plan node additions, removals, and maintenance as cache events that can still invalidate some users. Deploy the same resulting node list to every worker during a change, and avoid a prolonged period in which different workers hash against different pools.
Why session locking matters
Browsers commonly issue parallel requests, such as an HTML request plus AJAX calls, with the same session ID. PHP typically reads the session at request start and writes it when the request finishes. Without coordination, two requests can read the same old value and the later write can overwrite changes made by the first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
memcached.sess_locking = On makes a request acquire a lock associated with the session while it operates on that session. Tune these controls only after observing real request concurrency and execution time:
memcached.sess_lock_wait_min: initial wait interval while another request owns the lock.memcached.sess_lock_wait_max: upper bound for the wait interval.memcached.sess_lock_retries: number of acquisition attempts.memcached.sess_lock_expire: lock lifetime, which must account for the longest legitimate request that holds it.
Very short waits can cause avoidable failures or duplicate work; very long waits can make a stalled request block other requests. Measure the application before changing the documented defaults, and investigate requests that hold locks unusually long. A long-running endpoint that keeps the session open can serialize otherwise independent AJAX calls, so close or regenerate session state before lengthy work when the application permits it.
Optional replicas and failover: what they do and do not guarantee
php-memcached replicas
memcached.sess_number_of_replicas can write additional copies of a session to other nodes. The PHP documentation describes this as “poor man’s HA.” It can reduce the chance that one node failure loses a session, but it is not strongly consistent, durable storage.

A recovered server may contain an old value or no value at all. Depending on timing, a client can therefore see stale data or a missing session after recovery. Replicas also consume capacity and increase the amount of traffic generated by session writes. If you enable them, define how failed nodes are detected, removed, and reintroduced, and test the behavior during an actual node outage.
Removing failed servers
memcached.sess_remove_failed_servers can keep failed endpoints out of the active session pool. Pair it with the extension’s documented failure-limit setting and an operational recovery procedure. Automatic removal without a tested re-add process can leave different workers with different effective pools, which undermines predictable hashing.
Durability limits
Memcached is an in-memory cache. The session handler settings do not turn it into a write-ahead log or a durable database. If losing a session is unacceptable—for example, during a critical workflow—use a durable shared session store or provide an application-level recovery path rather than relying solely on replicas. Document what the application should do when a session is missing: require a new login, restore state from another system, or safely restart the workflow.
Binary protocol and proxy compatibility
The libmemcached reference states that replicas work only when binary protocol is enabled. Conversely, certain Memcached proxies, including twemproxy, require binary protocol to be disabled. Set memcached.sess_binary_protocol to match both the extension version and the network path:
- Direct connections with replicas: verify that binary mode is enabled where the extension requires it.
- A proxy that accepts only the text protocol: disable binary mode as required by that proxy.
Do not infer the effective value from a template file. Verify it with phpinfo() or runtime configuration inspection, and test through the same proxy or endpoint that production workers use. A protocol mismatch can look like a generic connection or session-write failure, so include protocol mode in deployment diagnostics.
Using the older memcache extension
The older memcache extension uses different names and syntax:

Expiration, garbage collection, and eviction
Set session.gc_maxlifetime deliberately. It expresses how long PHP considers session data eligible to remain before garbage collection, but the effective lifetime also depends on Memcached expiration and available memory.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Ensure the Memcached allocation can hold active sessions for the desired period.
- Monitor evictions, item age, and memory saturation.
- Remember that an entry can disappear before its PHP lifetime if Memcached needs space.
- Align application expectations with the fact that a cache restart or node loss can remove data.
Do not describe a session as durable merely because its expiration is long. If active users must survive cache restarts and eviction, move session state to storage designed for durability or implement a recovery mechanism. Capacity planning should include replica copies when replicas are enabled; otherwise the pool may appear adequately sized while writes and failover behavior consume additional memory.
Safe rollout and migration
- Inventory the PHP extension, version, SAPI, and effective directives on every worker.
- Choose the complete Memcached endpoint list and confirm DNS, routing, firewall, and proxy behavior from each worker.
- Deploy one reviewed configuration to all workers, including cookie settings and expiration policy.
- Reload the runtimes and verify that no worker still uses a local-file handler or an outdated pool.
- Run cross-worker and concurrent-request tests before shifting normal traffic.
- Schedule node additions, removals, and replica changes as cache-impacting operations, with a rollback and recovery procedure.
During a migration, expect some sessions to remain in the old store until they expire or users receive a new session. If uninterrupted continuity is required, plan an application-level migration rather than assuming two unrelated handlers will read one another’s data.
Verification procedure after configuration
- Inspect the serving runtime. Confirm the expected handler, complete server list, consistent-hash value, locking value, replica setting, and binary-protocol value in the PHP SAPI that handles web traffic.
- Check network reachability. From each application server, connect to every configured Memcached endpoint or to the configured proxy and verify that health checks succeed.
- Create a diagnostic session. Record a unique value in the session, then make requests that deliberately reach different PHP workers. The value should remain available without sticky load balancing.
- Exercise parallel requests. Issue concurrent requests that update the same session key and confirm that the application does not silently lose one update. Test with realistic request durations.
- Test a controlled node failure. Remove one node according to your maintenance procedure, observe session behavior, then restore it and verify whether stale or missing entries appear as the documentation warns.
- Watch capacity metrics. During the test, inspect evictions, memory usage, connection errors, lock wait time, and request latency.
Troubleshooting common failures
Users appear logged out when requests hit another worker
- Compare
session.save_handlerandsession.save_pathon every worker. - Check that all workers use the same session cookie name, domain, path, and security settings.
- Confirm that hostnames resolve to the intended Memcached nodes from every server.
- Ensure the workers are using the same extension family;
memcacheandmemcacheddo not share directive names. - Verify that the browser is actually sending the expected cookie and that a reverse proxy is not rewriting its domain or path.
Sessions disappear after adding or removing a node
- Verify that consistent hashing is enabled on every worker.
- Confirm that the exact same node list and ordering policy is deployed everywhere.
- Accept that consistent hashing cannot recover a session whose only copy was on a removed or failed node.
- Review eviction and restart events before assuming a hashing error.
Parallel requests overwrite each other
- Confirm
memcached.sess_lockingis enabled. - Measure lock wait and retry behavior under the application’s actual AJAX or parallel-request pattern.
- Check whether a request exceeds the lock expiration and leaves another request free to write overlapping data.
- Where possible, reduce the time a request holds the session by closing or regenerating session state before lengthy work.
Replica or proxy configuration fails
- Check whether replicas require binary protocol for the installed libmemcached build.
- If traffic passes through a proxy that requires text protocol, disable binary mode as that proxy requires.
- Verify the effective setting at runtime rather than relying on a configuration template.
- Test failover and node recovery; replicas may return stale values or no value after a server comes back.
Operational design checklist
- Document the extension name and version on every PHP worker.
- Deploy one reviewed configuration to all workers instead of editing hosts independently.
- Use consistent hashing for planned pool changes, while communicating that it is not replication.
- Keep session locking enabled unless measurements and application design justify another choice.
- Set replica and failed-server-removal behavior together with a recovery runbook.
- Match binary protocol to direct Memcached connections or to the proxy in front of them.
- Monitor evictions, lock contention, endpoint failures, and session-related error rates.
- Provide a durable alternative when session loss has business or security consequences.
Recommended baseline
For a direct multi-node pool using php-memcached, start with the shared handler and server list, explicit consistent hashing, and locking enabled. Roll out identical settings to every worker, verify them through the serving SAPI, and test cross-worker requests before production traffic is moved. Add replicas or automatic failed-server removal only with an outage and recovery test, because those features improve availability at the cost of more complicated stale-data behavior. Treat Memcached as shared, disposable session cache state—not as durable storage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all PHP servers need the same Memcached server list?
Yes. Every worker should use the same handler, endpoint list, hashing policy, cookie settings, and compatible extension version. Different lists can hash one session ID to different destinations.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan I rely on load-balancer sticky sessions instead?
Stickiness can mask a broken shared-session configuration, but it does not let users move safely between workers. A common Memcached pool allows any worker to locate the session by its key.
Will consistent hashing prevent all logouts when a node is removed?
No. It limits remapping when the pool changes, but a session whose only copy was on the removed or failed node cannot be reconstructed.
Should session locking be disabled for faster AJAX requests?
Usually no. Keep memcached.sess_locking enabled for ordinary sessions, then tune wait, retry, and expiration settings from measured concurrency and request duration.
Do Memcached replicas make sessions durable?
No. Replicas are described as a limited high-availability aid. A recovered node may have stale or missing data, and cache restarts or eviction can still remove sessions.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does enabling replicas break connections through my proxy?
Libmemcached replicas require binary protocol, while some proxies, including twemproxy, require text protocol. Set memcached.sess_binary_protocol for the actual extension and network path.
What is the difference between memcache and memcached session configuration?
They are separate extensions. memcached uses session.save_handler = memcached and host-and-port entries; memcache uses session.save_handler = memcache and URL-style entries such as tcp://host:11211.
How can I prove sessions work across workers?
Create a diagnostic session value, send requests deliberately to different workers, then run concurrent updates and a controlled node-failure test. Check runtime settings, lock waits, connection errors, evictions, and latency while testing.
The Bottom Line
Use one identical, version-checked configuration on every PHP worker: a shared Memcached pool, consistent hashing, session locking, matching cookies, and a deliberate expiration policy. Replicas and failed-server removal can improve availability, but neither replaces durability or a tested recovery plan.
