To send a photo at its original quality, use a file-transfer feature or a cloud service configured to keep the original, then have the recipient download the file. AirDrop is the simplest nearby option between Apple devices; supported Android phones can use Quick Share with AirDrop interoperability; Google Photos works for remote sharing when its backup quality is set to Original quality. A soft thumbnail in a message does not prove that the downloaded file was reduced, so check the saved file’s dimensions and details when quality matters.
Choose the method that matches the situation
“Full resolution,” “original file,” and “original-quality backup” describe related but different outcomes. Full resolution means the pixel dimensions were retained. The original file also retains the camera’s format and may include editing history and metadata. A cloud backup set to Original quality preserves the captured resolution, but the way a separate sharing app handles a download can still vary. Decide what must be preserved before sending.

What “without losing quality” actually requires
A preview can be intentionally low-resolution so a conversation loads quickly. Ask the recipient to save or download the attachment before judging it. On the saved copy, compare the pixel dimensions with the original and inspect the file type and details. If those match, the preview was not evidence of compression.
Sending a photo as an in-app image and sending it as a file are often different workflows. Messaging services may impose attachment limits or create an optimized copy, while a direct file transfer is designed to deliver the selected file. Apple notes that attachment-size limits depend on the service provider, so a large image may fail or be handled differently from a smaller one.

There are also quality changes that do not show up as fewer pixels. Converting HEIF/HEIC to JPEG changes the file representation; stripping location data changes metadata; and a Live Photo may arrive as a still image when the receiving service or device does not support Live Photos. Decide whether you need the exact camera file, the same pixels in a widely supported format, or simply the best-looking image the recipient can open.
Send original photos from iPhone to a nearby Apple device with AirDrop
AirDrop is the most direct route from an iPhone to a nearby iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Apple’s instructions are in Share photos and videos on iPhone.
Step-by-step
- On both devices, open the AirDrop controls and choose a discoverable setting. The receiving device must be awake and able to appear to nearby contacts.
- Open Photos on the iPhone, select one or more images, and tap Share.
- Tap the nearby person or device shown under AirDrop.
- If preserving the source file, edits, and metadata is important, tap Options before choosing the recipient and enable All Photos Data. Apple documents this control for AirDrop; it sends the original with edit history and metadata.
- The recipient accepts the transfer. On the receiving device, save or import the item and inspect its details if the exact resolution is critical.
Choose a format deliberately
Apple presents format controls such as Automatic, Current, and Most Compatible in the share options. Current prevents a format conversion, which is the appropriate choice when the recipient can work with the iPhone’s original format. Most Compatible favors devices and software that expect common formats; Apple says it may convert photos to JPEG or videos to MOV. Automatic lets the system choose for the destination. A conversion can make a file easier to open, but it is no longer the exact original representation.
Preserve or remove metadata
Apple states that sharing a photo or video can include associated metadata such as the date and time, location, device, and captions. In the iPhone share options, review the available location and metadata controls before sending. Leave location information on when it is useful for a personal archive; turn it off when the image could reveal a home address, workplace, travel route, or another sensitive place.

What AirDrop does not guarantee
AirDrop preserves the selected file when you use the original-data option, but it does not make an unsupported feature appear on the recipient’s device. A Live Photo can be delivered as a still if the receiving software cannot display the motion component. Similarly, choosing a compatibility conversion can alter the file type even when the visible image remains sharp.
Send photos from a supported Android phone to an iPhone
Quick Share can interoperate with AirDrop on supported Android models. Android describes the feature as sending and receiving “full-resolution photos and videos without losing any of their original detail” in its June 23, 2026 article, How to Share Photos & Videos from Android to iPhone without losing quality. That is Android’s description of the feature, not an independent test, and compatibility is model-specific.
Check compatibility before troubleshooting
Do not assume that every Android phone can discover an iPhone through Quick Share. Android’s current device information covers certain models from Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Xiaomi, OnePlus, OPPO, HONOR, and vivo, and the list can change. Check the current Share files and photos between Android and iPhone information for the exact model and software combination.
Direct transfer procedure
- On the iPhone, open AirDrop visibility controls and select a setting that allows the Android sender to find it. Keep the two phones close together.
- On Android, select the photos or videos, tap Share, and choose Quick Share.
- Choose the nearby iPhone when it appears. On supported Samsung devices, Android’s instructions also require enabling Share with Apple devices in Quick Share settings.
- The iPhone user accepts the request. Wait for the transfer to finish before closing either sharing panel.
- Open the received item on the iPhone and check its details if the dimensions or file type matter.
Quick Share can send multiple selected items together on supported interoperability paths, which is more practical than repeating a one-photo transfer for a batch.

Use the QR-code fallback when discovery fails
If the iPhone does not appear, or the Android model lacks the integration, Quick Share can create a QR code. The recipient scans the code with the iPhone, opens the Quick Share page in a browser, and downloads the files. This avoids relying on device discovery, but the recipient must complete the browser download and should verify the saved files rather than judging the page preview.
Share remotely with Google Photos without reducing the backup
Google Photos has a separate backup-quality setting. To retain the captured resolution for backed-up photos and videos, open Google Photos, go to Photos settings > Backup > Photos and videos quality, and select Original quality. Google says this stores photos and videos at the resolution at which they were captured and uses Google Account storage. The setting affects the backup copy; it does not retroactively restore detail that was already removed by another app.
Understand the Storage saver trade-off
Storage saver is not equivalent to Original quality. Google’s help documentation says it may compress photos, resize photos larger than 16 megapixels to 16 megapixels, and resize videos above 1080p to 1080p. Those limits can reduce detail from a modern phone camera even when the image still looks good on a small screen.

When sharing from a cloud library, make sure the recipient uses the service’s download command rather than saving a screen preview. For an important delivery, ask the recipient to confirm the downloaded file’s dimensions and extension. Google Photos provides a per-item details view that can show the backup quality and size, allowing you to confirm whether a particular item was backed up as Original quality or Storage saver.

A cloud link is useful when the recipient is far away or uses a different phone platform, but access and download behavior depend on the service and the recipient’s account or browser. Share only with the intended audience and remove access when the service offers that control.
Pick the right path for iPhone-to-Android and Android-to-iPhone sharing
For a nearby iPhone-to-Android transfer, a direct method that presents the item as a downloadable file is usually preferable to inserting the photo into a chat composer. If the iPhone’s original HEIF/HEIC file cannot be opened on the Android device, use Apple’s Most Compatible option and tell the recipient that the file was converted to JPEG. If exact format preservation matters, keep Current and use a recipient app that supports it.
For Android-to-iPhone sharing, try Quick Share only after confirming the model-specific interoperability requirement. If it is unavailable, a cloud library configured for Original quality or the QR-code download path can deliver the file without relying on the phones’ native discovery systems.

Why photos look blurry when you text them
The conversation shows only a preview
Have the recipient save the attachment first. Compare the saved image’s pixel dimensions with the sender’s original. A blurry in-thread thumbnail can be a display optimization, not proof that the downloaded file was compressed.

The app created a reduced copy
Check whether the sender used a photo button that inserts an image into the conversation or an attachment control that sends a file. The two paths can have different handling. If the app offers a media-quality choice, select its highest or original setting; if it has no such control, use AirDrop, Quick Share, or a cloud download instead.
The file is too large for the provider
Attachment size limits depend on the service provider. A failed upload, delayed message, or automatically optimized image can result when the file exceeds that limit. Split a large batch, send a cloud download, or use a direct transfer rather than repeatedly resending the same image through the message composer.
The recipient cannot decode the format
If the recipient sees an error rather than a sharp image, the issue may be format compatibility rather than resolution. On iPhone, choose Most Compatible when a JPEG or MOV is more useful than the original HEIF/HEVC representation. Explain that this is a conversion so the recipient does not mistake a different extension for a quality failure.

Live Photos contain motion as well as a still frame. Apple notes that they may be sent as stills when the receiving service or device does not support them. If the motion component is important, use a destination that supports Live Photos or send the supported video component separately.
Verify that the recipient received the original
- Keep the source photo available on the sending phone.
- Ask the recipient to save the download to the device, not merely open the preview.
- Compare width and height in the saved file’s details with the source. A matching dimension is evidence that the pixel resolution was retained.
- Compare the file extension and, when relevant, the metadata. A JPEG in place of HEIC indicates a format conversion even if the dimensions match.
- For Google Photos, open the item’s details and confirm the backup quality and file size. An item marked Storage saver should not be treated as an Original quality backup.
- If the transfer was a batch, spot-check several files, including the largest and any Live Photos, because one unsupported item can be handled differently from the rest.
When a file must be used for printing, editing, legal documentation, or archival storage, request confirmation of the downloaded dimensions and format instead of relying on how it appears on a phone screen.
Privacy checks before you tap Send
Resolution is only one part of a photo’s contents. Apple says shared media can include date, time, location, device, and captions. A picture taken at home may therefore disclose where and when it was captured, even if the recipient never sees that information in the image itself.

- Use Current to avoid Apple’s format conversion; use Most Compatible when the recipient needs JPEG or MOV.
- Review location and other metadata before sending sensitive images.
- Have the recipient download the file and check its dimensions, extension, and details rather than judging a thumbnail.
