For the simplest automatic expiry, use an Apple iCloud Link: the link stops working after 30 days, and you can stop it sooner. If you need to choose a specific expiry date, Dropbox offers that control on eligible Professional and team plans. Google Photos can invalidate a shared-album link, but its documented control is a manual reset rather than a scheduled expiry.
All three approaches are link-based, not recipient-locked. Anyone who obtains a usable URL may be able to open it, and stopping the link cannot remove photos that someone already downloaded or copied.
What an “expiring private link” really does
An expiring photo link is a URL that a sharing service disables automatically or lets you invalidate later. It is useful when you want people to view a set of photos for a limited period without leaving a permanent, reusable address in circulation.
“Private” needs a precise definition here. A link is a bearer credential: possession of the URL can be enough to open the shared items. Apple says anyone with an iCloud Link can view the selected photos and videos. Google Photos says a shared-album link can be shared onward. Therefore, a link is different from inviting named accounts, where access is tied to particular identities.

Use a link when convenience matters and you can send it only through a private channel. For a small group that must be individually identified, use person-level sharing when the service offers it. Whichever method you choose, select only the intended photos, send the URL privately, and disable or reset it when the sharing window ends.
Which service fits your expiry requirement?
| Service | Expiry behavior | Early control | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple iCloud Link | Automatic expiry after 30 days | Owner can stop sharing before 30 days | Anyone with the link can view the selected photos and videos; availability varies by country or region |
| Dropbox shared link | Sender selects an expiration date on eligible Professional and team plans | Edit the link settings or disable the link before the selected date | Expired links are disabled at 11:59 p.m. on the chosen date in the user’s time zone; the feature is plan-dependent |
| Google Photos shared album | No scheduled expiry is documented in the cited help guidance | Turn link sharing off, then back on to create a new URL and invalidate the old one | Removing a collaborator alone does not block someone who still has the original link while link sharing remains on |
Choose the row that matches the question you need to answer:
- “I want it to disappear automatically without remembering a date.” Use an iCloud Link and plan around its fixed 30-day lifetime.
- “I need it available until a particular day.” Use Dropbox only after confirming that the account has the expiration feature.
- “I already use Google Photos and can turn access off myself.” Use a shared album, but treat the link as manually revocable rather than automatically expiring.
Apple iCloud Link: automatic 30-day expiry
How the expiry works
Apple Support states: “iCloud Links automatically expire after 30 days, but you can stop sharing them sooner.” The 30-day period is a service rule, not a date you set for each recipient. It gives you a predictable maximum window, but it may be longer or shorter than your event requires.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Apple also notes that iCloud Links are not available in every country or region. If the link option is missing, regional availability may be the reason rather than a problem with your photo library.
Create and send an iCloud Link
- Choose the collection carefully. In Photos, select only the photos and videos intended for this recipient. Open the selection for a final check; a link grants access to the entire selected set.
- Use the share action. Choose the iCloud Link option (the wording can vary by Apple operating-system version). Wait for the link to be generated.
- Check the message before sending. Send the URL through a private message or email to the intended people. Do not post it on a public page, group, or forum where it can be copied.
- Tell recipients the window. Explain that the link is scheduled to expire after 30 days and that forwarding it can give other people access while it remains active.
Stop an iCloud Link before 30 days
- Open the Photos sharing controls and go to the iCloud Links section.
- Locate the link you want to close.
- Choose the control to stop sharing that link and confirm.
- If you sent the URL in a message, follow up with recipients so they know the link has been deliberately closed rather than merely failing temporarily.
Stopping the link controls access through Apple’s service from that point forward. It does not reach into another person’s device and delete a photo they already saved.

When iCloud Link is the right choice
Use it for a short-lived gallery such as a family event, a delivery preview, or a time-limited set of images when a fixed 30-day lifetime is acceptable. It is less suitable when you need a two-hour window, a specific calendar deadline, or different expiry dates for different recipients, because the documented behavior is a standard 30-day expiry rather than a sender-selected date.
Dropbox shared links: choose a calendar expiry date
Confirm that the account supports expiration
Dropbox documents link expiration for customers on the Professional and team plans listed on its support page. Do not assume that every Dropbox account has the setting. Open the account’s link-permission controls and verify that an expiration-date field is available before promising recipients a deadline.
If the field is absent, the account may not be eligible, the administrator may control the setting, or the current interface may use a different permissions screen. In that situation, do not describe the link as automatically expiring; use a service with a documented expiry or plan to disable the link manually.
Set the expiration date
- Prepare the files. Put only the photos intended for sharing in the relevant Dropbox folder or file selection. Check filenames and thumbnails before creating the URL.
- Open shared-link settings. From the file or folder’s sharing controls, choose the option to create a link or edit the existing link’s permissions.
- Set an expiration date. Select the date shown in the expiration control, then save the permission change. Record the date and the account time zone for your own schedule.
- Copy and send the link privately. Use a direct message or email rather than a public post. Tell recipients the last day on which the link is expected to work.
- Recheck the setting if the deadline matters. Reopen the link’s permissions and confirm that the date is still present. A changed folder, account, or administrator policy can alter which controls are available.
What happens at the deadline
Dropbox states: “After the expiration date, the link is disabled.” Its documented cutoff is 11:59 p.m. on the chosen day in the user’s time zone. That is an operational cutoff, not the start of the next day in every recipient’s local time zone, so communicate the date and time-zone basis when the deadline is important.
Close the link early
Open the same shared-link permissions used to set the date and disable or remove the link before the deadline. Early closure is useful if the photos were sent to the wrong person, the event has ended, or you discover that the collection contained an image that should not have been shared.

Plan eligibility is the main Dropbox failure mode. If recipients can still open a link after the date you expected, first verify that the link was created under an eligible plan, that the date was saved, and that you are checking the same link rather than an older URL for the files.

Understand the control Google documents
The cited Google Photos guidance describes owner-controlled link reset, not a timer that turns off on a chosen date. To invalidate an existing shared-album URL, Google’s instruction is: “To reset the link, turn link sharing off and then back on.” Turning it back on generates a new link, while the old URL is no longer the active shared-album address.
This is a deliberate manual process. If you forget to turn sharing off, the original URL remains usable under the album’s sharing rules. Google also warns that removing a collaborator is not enough while link sharing remains enabled: someone holding the original link can still view the album.
Create a shared-album link
- Create or open the album. Add only the photos meant for this audience and review the album before changing its sharing settings.
- Open sharing options. Use the album’s sharing controls and enable link sharing. Copy the generated URL.
- Send it privately. A recipient can share the link onward, so avoid public channels and explain that access is controlled by the URL.
Reset the link when access should end
- Open the album’s sharing controls.
- Turn link sharing off and confirm the change.
- Turn link sharing back on only if you need a new sharing period.
- Copy the newly generated URL and send it only to the people who should have access now.
Do not use “remove collaborator” as a substitute for this reset. A collaborator is an account-level participant; a person who has the old link may not be removed by that action while link sharing remains active.
When Google Photos is practical
Google Photos works well when you already organize images in albums and can remember to close or reset sharing after an event. It is a poor fit for a hands-off expiry requirement because the documented help does not provide a scheduled end date.

A privacy-first sharing workflow
Before creating the link
- Minimize the collection. Remove screenshots, location-sensitive images, documents, or other photos that the recipient does not need.
- Check the audience model. Confirm whether the service uses a URL that anyone can possess or named-account invitations. Do not promise identity-only access when you are sending a bearer link.
- Choose the expiry method. Decide between iCloud’s automatic 30 days, Dropbox’s selected date on eligible plans, and Google Photos’ manual reset.
- Plan the shutdown. Put the expiry date or reset task on your calendar when the photos are time-sensitive.
While sending
- Use a private message, direct email, or another channel limited to the intended recipients.
- Send the URL separately from any publicly visible post that identifies the event or collection.
- State the sharing window in plain language, including the Dropbox time-zone cutoff when applicable.
- Ask recipients not to forward the link if the photos are personal.
After sending
- Keep a record of which link you sent and which service controls it.
- Check the service’s sharing panel when you need to close access, rather than deleting the local album and assuming the URL is invalid.
- For Google Photos, turn link sharing off to invalidate the old URL; removing a collaborator alone is insufficient.
- For iCloud, use the iCloud Links section to stop an active link before the automatic 30-day limit.
- For Dropbox, confirm the expiration date and disable the link early if circumstances change.
What expiry and revocation cannot undo
Disabling a link changes future access through the sharing service. It cannot retrieve a copy someone already downloaded, exported, photographed from a screen, or copied to another device.
Google’s help explicitly says that turning off sharing does not delete photos and videos that recipients previously downloaded or copied. Apple’s iCloud terms likewise state that content copied from a Shared Album to another device or computer is not deleted when the shared content is removed.
For sensitive images, treat the link as a controlled viewing convenience, not as a guarantee that no duplicate will exist. Share the smallest set possible, use the shortest practical window, and consider person-level access when accountability matters more than friction.
Choosing by real-world scenario
One event, no need to remember a shutdown
An iCloud Link is the most straightforward fit if all recipients can receive a URL and a 30-day lifetime is acceptable. The service supplies the automatic cutoff, while the owner retains an option to stop sharing sooner.

An album you will update over time
Google Photos can be convenient for an evolving album, but its link is not a scheduled-expiry mechanism in the documented guidance. Turn link sharing off when the current audience should lose access, then turn it back on to issue a fresh URL for a new audience or period.
A link sent to the wrong person
Act immediately: stop the iCloud Link, disable the Dropbox link, or reset Google Photos link sharing. Then assume that any photos already viewed or copied may remain with the unintended recipient; revocation is not a remote-delete command.
Troubleshooting common surprises
The recipient says the link does not open
Check whether the link has reached its documented end: iCloud Links expire after 30 days, Dropbox links are disabled after their selected date, and a Google Photos URL may have been invalidated by a reset. Confirm that you sent the current URL rather than an older message, and verify that the service is available in the relevant region.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The expiry control is missing
For Dropbox, verify plan eligibility first; expiration is documented for listed Professional and team plans rather than universally. For iCloud and Google Photos, do not substitute an invented date-setting control for the documented behavior. Use the available stop or reset control instead.
Someone can still view photos after a collaborator was removed
This is expected for a Google Photos album while link sharing remains on. Turn link sharing off to invalidate the old URL. Removing a named collaborator does not revoke a URL that another person still holds.
The link is closed, but a copy still exists
That is the normal limit of revocation. The service can stop future requests, but it cannot erase files already downloaded or copied to another device. Handle future shares by reducing the collection and shortening the active period.
Bottom line
Use an Apple iCloud Link when an automatic 30-day expiry is the simplest answer. Use Dropbox when you need a sender-selected date and have an eligible Professional or team plan. Use Google Photos when manual control is acceptable, remembering to turn link sharing off and back on to invalidate an old URL. In every case, send the link privately, assume it can be forwarded while active, and remember that expiry cannot remove copies already saved.
