For two Windows PCs, the simplest software solution is Microsoft PowerToys Mouse Without Borders. Install PowerToys on both computers, create a security key on one, enter that key and the first computer’s name on the other, then arrange the computer icons to match your desks. Move the pointer past the edge of one screen and the keyboard and mouse will control the second PC.

This method shares input over your network; it does not send video. Each computer continues to use its own display, and a single monitor still needs its input changed manually if you want to view the other PC.

What software keyboard-and-mouse sharing actually does

A sharing utility keeps a keyboard and mouse physically connected to one computer while forwarding their input to another computer across the local network. You can move the pointer between desktops, type in the active computer, and usually copy text between them. Both PCs remain independent: they keep their own operating systems, applications, storage and displays.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

  • Input sharing: the pointer crosses from one computer to the next, normally through a screen edge or a hotkey.
  • Clipboard sharing: text and, depending on the utility, other copied data can be transferred.
  • Optional file transfer: some products support small transfers, but this is not the same as file synchronization.
  • No video switching: the software does not change a monitor’s HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C input.

If you need one monitor to alternate between two computers, you must change the monitor’s input yourself or use a hardware KVM. Software input sharing and a video KVM solve different problems.

Choose the right software for your computers

Option Best fit Documented capabilities Important cautions
PowerToys Mouse Without Borders Two or more Windows PCs Free PowerToys utility; controls up to four computers; clipboard sharing and file transfer. Microsoft’s documentation is Windows-specific. File transfer has limits, and service mode increases security exposure.
Synergy Mixed Windows, macOS and Linux setups Synergy 1 and 3 support those three desktop operating systems. Features include screen layout, hotkeys, copy/paste and encrypted connections. It does not run on iOS, iPadOS, Android or ChromeOS, and it does not switch monitor inputs. Check the current edition and pricing before buying.
Deskflow Users who prefer a free, open-source cross-platform project The project describes TLS as enabled by default, supports Wayland and provides clipboard sharing. Release-specific operating-system requirements and maintenance status can change; verify them for the version you install.

Before choosing, compare seven things: operating-system support, whether you prefer screen-edge movement or hotkeys, clipboard and file-transfer requirements, local-network and firewall rules, security policy, expected maintenance, and current price. A utility that works well on two Windows machines may not be suitable for a Mac, Linux desktop or tightly managed work network.

Set up Mouse Without Borders on two Windows PCs

Check the prerequisites

  • Two Windows PCs connected to the same local network. Wired Ethernet and a reliable private Wi-Fi network are generally easier to troubleshoot than isolated or unstable connections.
  • Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 or later. Microsoft lists support for both x64 and Arm64 PCs.
  • Permission to install and run PowerToys on each computer.
  • The host name of the first PC. You can find it in Windows Settings under System > About > Device name, or use the name shown by the Windows system information tools.

Install PowerToys on both computers

  1. Download and install Microsoft PowerToys on the first Windows PC.
  2. Repeat the installation on the second PC. Use the same current PowerToys release where possible so that settings and connection behavior match.
  3. Open PowerToys on both machines and leave it running while you configure the connection.

PowerToys itself is free. The Mouse Without Borders feature is included in the PowerToys settings rather than being a separate paid application.

Create the connection

  1. On the PC you want to use as the first machine, open PowerToys Settings and select Mouse Without Borders in the left navigation.
  2. Choose New Key. PowerToys generates a security key for pairing.
  3. On the second PC, open PowerToys Settings > Mouse Without Borders.
  4. Enter the key generated on the first PC and enter the first PC’s computer name (host name).
  5. Select Connect. Wait for the two machines to appear as connected.

The key and host name are what authorize the second computer to join. Treat the key as a credential: do not post it in a chat or share it with an untrusted person on the same network.

UGREEN USB 3.0 Switch 2 Computers Sharing USB C & A Devices, 4 Port USB Switcher Sharing Keyboard and Mouse, Printer/Scanner USB Switch Hub for Two Computers with 2 USB3.0 Cables and Controller
  • 2 PCs Share Multiple Devices: UGREEN 2-In 4-Out USB switcher supports 2 computers sharing 4 USB devices like keyboards, mouses, printers, headphones, and USB cameras. Switch freely between your work computer and personal computer and boost your work efficiency. (NOTE: This USB Switcher is NOT a KVM switch and does not support connecting a monitor or video transmission)
  • Connect USB C & USB A Devices: The USB 3.0 switch provides 1 USB C port and 3 USB A ports to support connecting various USB devices, extending more ports for two computers. (*It is recommended to power supply when using multiple devices simultaneously to avoid disconnection due to insufficient power.*)
  • 5Gbps Data Transfer / Plug & Play: With 4 USB 3.0 ports, the USB 3.0 switcher supports data transfer up to 5Gbps and is backward compatible with USB 2.0; Simple plug and play for any modern operating system: Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, and Linux computers. (*The USB ports are primarily for data transfer and are not recommended for charging devices.*)
  • Note: 1. If your input device uses a USB-C port, please purchase a USB-C to USB adapter before use. 2. When using a camera through the switcher, if your computer has a built-in camera, please select the UGREEN camera in the camera settings to ensure proper use. 3.The USB-C port on the product does not support video output and cannot be used with a dock to connect a display
  • USB-C Power Supply: The USB switch is designed with a optional power supply for high-power devices like Hard Disk Drives, headsets, and other USB devices to work more stably; The upgraded USB-C Power port avoids the trouble of not finding a micro cable.

Arrange the computers in the correct order

  1. In Mouse Without Borders, open the device layout or screen arrangement.
  2. Drag the computer icons so their positions match the physical screens: for example, place the laptop to the left of the desktop if that is how the desks are arranged.
  3. Save or apply the layout.
  4. Move the pointer beyond the matching edge of the first display. It should appear on the second computer, and the keyboard should type there immediately.

If the pointer crosses at the wrong edge, return to the layout and move the icons rather than changing Windows display resolution. The utility is mapping logical screen positions, not combining the monitors into one Windows desktop.

Use clipboard and file transfer without treating it as synchronization

Mouse Without Borders can share a clipboard and transfer files, but Microsoft documents specific restrictions.

  • The documented file-transfer limit is 100 MB.
  • Copy/paste and drag-and-drop do not work for folders or multiple files.
  • Network files have additional restrictions. A file that is available only through a mapped or remote network location may not transfer as a local file would.
  • There is no promise that permissions, metadata, application locks or interrupted transfers will be handled like a dedicated synchronization tool.

For a large project folder, use a normal network share, cloud storage approved by your organization, or another file-transfer method. Use Mouse Without Borders for occasional clipboard content and individual files within its documented limits.

Troubleshoot a connection that will not work

The second PC cannot connect

  1. Confirm both computers are on the same local network and are not separated by guest-network isolation.
  2. Re-enter the security key carefully. Generate a new key and pair again if you are unsure which key is current.
  3. Verify the first computer’s host name exactly, including hyphens and numbers.
  4. Check Windows Firewall on both machines. Mouse Without Borders provides an option to add the required firewall rule; use it only if your organization allows local input-sharing software.
  5. Use the utility’s Refresh connections control after correcting the network or firewall setting.
  6. Temporarily test with both PCs awake and logged in. Sleep, hibernation and a disconnected network adapter can make a healthy pairing appear broken.

The pointer reaches the wrong computer or will not cross

  • Reopen the device layout and match the icons to the physical left, right, above or below positions.
  • Check that Mouse Without Borders is enabled on both computers and that the connection indicator still shows both machines.
  • Move the pointer slowly across the edge. A pointer that stops at the edge may be on the wrong logical side or the second display may be locked.

Clipboard or file transfer fails

  • Test with plain text first. Rich documents, protected content and files held open by another program may not transfer.
  • Try one local file smaller than 100 MB rather than a folder or a multi-file selection.
  • Check whether the source is a network location; Microsoft documents restrictions for network files.
  • For repeated or large transfers, switch to a dedicated file-sharing method instead of troubleshooting Mouse Without Borders as though it were synchronization software.

Network and security considerations

Input sharing is only as reliable as the network path between the computers. Public-network profiles, guest Wi-Fi isolation, corporate firewall policy and unreliable wireless links can prevent discovery or interrupt control. A stable private LAN is the normal assumption. On a managed work network, ask the administrator before adding firewall rules or running a tool that can control another workstation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use service mode only when necessary

Mouse Without Borders has a service mode that can allow control of elevated applications or the Windows lock screen. Microsoft warns that this extra capability creates additional security risk. Leave service mode disabled unless you have a specific need for it, and review your organization’s endpoint-security rules before enabling it. Anyone who gains access to the sharing connection could otherwise control a more privileged desktop surface.

Understand what is exposed

  • The computers must accept input connections from one another.
  • The pairing key and host name should be protected like connection credentials.
  • Lock or disconnect the sharing utility when you leave a shared workstation unattended.
  • Do not use an untrusted public network for this arrangement unless your security team has provided an approved, isolated configuration.

Cross-platform alternatives: Synergy and Deskflow

Synergy for Windows, macOS and Linux

Synergy’s official documentation says Synergy 1 and Synergy 3 run on Windows, macOS and Linux. Its product material lists copy/paste, hotkeys, screen layout and TLS/SSL encryption. It behaves as a software KVM: keyboard and mouse control move between computers, but video remains on each computer’s own display.

Synergy does not run on iOS, iPadOS, Android or ChromeOS, and it cannot change a monitor’s physical input. A one-monitor desk therefore still requires manual monitor-input switching or separate hardware.

Synergy’s security documentation distinguishes its network behavior by version. Synergy 1 uses direct local-network links without a cloud relay and uses TCP port 24800 by default. Synergy 3 uses port 24800 for input and adds port 24802 for settings connections and multicast-DNS discovery; the documentation says the settings connection is not encrypted with TLS. If a firewall blocks either required path, configure an approved rule or choose another method.

Deskflow for an open-source approach

Deskflow describes itself as free and open source, with TLS enabled by default, Wayland support and clipboard sharing. It can suit people who need Windows, macOS or Linux support and prefer a community project. Check the release documentation for the exact operating-system versions, packaging method and current maintenance status before deployment; those details can change between releases.

Software sharing versus a hardware KVM

Need Software sharing Hardware KVM or peripheral switch
Move one keyboard and mouse between PCs Yes, over the network after both systems run compatible software. Yes, by pressing a physical switch or hotkey.
Switch the monitor’s video input No. Change the monitor input manually. Yes, if the KVM supports the monitor’s video standard and resolution.
Install software on both PCs Required. Usually not required for basic switching.
Depend on a network Yes. No network is needed for the USB/video path.
Share clipboard or files Often available, subject to product limits. Not normally; use a separate storage or network method.

Choose a hardware KVM when software cannot be installed, the PCs are on isolated networks, or you need a single monitor to follow the selected computer automatically. Choose software when the computers can communicate and you want seamless pointer movement plus clipboard features without adding a video switch.

Costs and what you actually need

The Windows setup requires only the two existing PCs, their displays, a keyboard, a mouse and a compatible network. PowerToys is free, so there is no keyboard-and-mouse bundle to purchase for this method. A USB KVM or peripheral switch is a different, optional solution rather than a required accessory.

A TechRadar report dated October 10, 2026 described Synergy prices of $15 for three computers, $19 for five and $29 for 15, with separate enterprise pricing. Those amounts were reported secondhand, not confirmed against the current official pricing page, so verify the price and edition before paying. Deskflow is presented by its project as free and open source, but hosting, support and packaging can vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision checklist

  • Both PCs run Windows: start with Mouse Without Borders.
  • Windows, macOS and/or Linux: compare Synergy and Deskflow against your exact operating-system versions.
  • You need only pointer and keyboard movement: any compatible input-sharing tool may be sufficient.
  • You need folders, many files or large transfers: plan a separate file-sharing workflow.
  • You need one monitor to follow the active PC: use manual input switching or a hardware KVM.
  • You cannot change firewall or install policy: ask the administrator or choose hardware.
  • You need lock-screen or elevated-app control: evaluate the service-mode security risk before enabling it.
  • You work on public or unreliable Wi-Fi: expect connection problems and test on an approved, stable network first.

Bottom line

For two Windows PCs, install PowerToys on both, pair Mouse Without Borders with its generated key and computer name, and arrange the screen icons to match your desk. It supports up to four computers and includes limited clipboard and file transfer, but it does not switch monitor video. Use Synergy or Deskflow when cross-platform support matters, and use a hardware KVM when software installation, network connectivity or video switching is the real constraint.
