To share a large photo or video without reducing its quality, transfer the original file—not a compressed preview or message attachment. For nearby Apple devices, use AirDrop; for supported Android phones sending to Apple devices, use Quick Share with AirDrop. For a Windows PC and a supported Android phone, Phone Link can work for smaller files, but each file must be 512 MB or less. When devices are far apart, use a download link or, for a large iPhone video sent by email, Mail Drop. If you need an offline handoff, use compatible external storage.
The right method depends on more than file size: check whether the devices support it, whether both are online, how long the recipient has to download, and whether you need the photo or video’s associated information—such as location, captions, or edit history—to go with it.
What “without losing quality” means
A transfer preserves quality when the recipient gets the original file rather than a resized, recompressed, or otherwise transformed version. The fact that a transfer completes successfully does not, by itself, prove that the media arrived unchanged. Some sharing routes may deliver a preview or a processed copy; the official guidance cited here establishes original-data options for Apple Photos sharing, but does not establish that every messaging app or transfer method is lossless.

For this guide, “large” means a file that may exceed an email attachment limit, take too long to send as a message, or exceed a device-to-device tool’s per-file limit. The documented limits differ by service: Phone Link has a 512 MB maximum per file, while Google’s QR workflow to Apple devices has a 10 GB sharing allowance per 24 hours. Those are service limits, not file-quality settings.
Choose a transfer method
| Situation | Best-supported method | Key limit or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Nearby iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro to another Apple device | AirDrop | Wi-Fi and Bluetooth should be on; the recipient accepts the transfer. Use All Photos Data when associated media details matter. Apple’s AirDrop instructions |
| Nearby supported Android phone to iPhone, iPad, or Mac | Quick Share with AirDrop | Requires a supported Android model and the Apple device’s AirDrop visibility set to Everyone for 10 Minutes. Google’s current device list and steps |
| Android phone that does not support the AirDrop-compatible flow to an Apple device | Quick Share QR-code download | Internet is required on both devices; files are available for 24 hours. Google documents a 10 GB-per-24-hour limit. Google’s Quick Share guidance |
| Supported Android phone and Windows PC, for a file within the limit | Phone Link drag and drop | Up to 100 files at a time, no more than 512 MB per file; folders and cloud-backed files are excluded. Microsoft’s requirements and steps |
| Large iPhone video for someone who is not nearby | Mail Drop | The recipient has 30 days to download the attachment. Apple’s Mail Drop limits |
| Offline handoff or no suitable transfer link | Compatible external storage | Check the phone’s connector or adapter and the drive’s compatibility. Apple’s storage-device transfer guide |
There is no comparable published transfer-speed figure in the official sources cited here. Actual time depends on the devices, connection, file size, and other conditions; no method should be chosen on the assumption of a guaranteed speed.
Send a large file between nearby Apple devices with AirDrop
Apple recommends AirDrop for sending a large video to a nearby iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro. It is a direct device-to-device choice when both people are present and the recipient can accept the transfer. AirDrop requires Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to be on.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- On the sending iPhone, open the video in Photos. Choose the video you want to send and open the share options.
- Choose whether associated data should travel with it. In Options, turn on All Photos Data if you need original-format video details, metadata, location, edit history, or captions. This is the relevant choice when preserving those associated details matters, not merely the visible picture.
- Select AirDrop and the nearby recipient. The recipient must accept the transfer on their device. Keep both devices nearby while the transfer completes.
- Check the received item. Open the file on the destination device and confirm it is the intended video before removing the source copy. If metadata or editing information is important, confirm those details as well.
Apple’s documented recommendation concerns large videos and nearby Apple devices. It should not be read as a claim that every sharing route in Photos, every third-party app, or every export preserves every property of every media file. The Apple guide to sharing long videos describes the All Photos Data option and the AirDrop workflow.

Send from Android to an Apple device
Some Android devices can use Quick Share to send to an Apple device with AirDrop. Compatibility is model-specific, so check Google’s current supported-device list rather than assuming that any Android phone can use this method. Google currently lists Pixel 8a or later and certain models from Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, Transsion, and Motorola.
When the Android phone supports Quick Share with AirDrop
- Set the Apple device’s AirDrop visibility. On the receiving iPhone, iPad, or Mac, set AirDrop visibility to Everyone for 10 Minutes.
- On Android, select the file and choose Quick Share. Pick the Apple device shown as the recipient.
- Accept on the Apple device. The receiving person must accept the incoming transfer.
- Check the downloaded file. Open it on the Apple device and verify the file and any details that matter before deleting the Android original.
The supported-device list and the visibility requirement can change, so use Google’s Quick Share support page to confirm the current availability for the exact Android model.
When the Android phone is not on the supported list
Google documents a QR-code workflow as an alternative for sending from Android to Apple. The Apple device scans the QR code and downloads the file through a browser. Both devices need internet access for this route, so it is not an offline substitute for a nearby transfer.

Google says QR-shared files are end-to-end encrypted, hosted for 24 hours, and do not count against the sender’s personal Google Drive storage. Its documented limits are 10 GB shared to Apple devices per 24 hours, up to 1,000 files in a session, and up to 20 Apple receivers at a time. These limits apply to this documented Quick Share-to-Apple workflow; they are not a general limit for every Quick Share transfer.

- Start the Apple-sharing QR workflow in Quick Share. Follow the current instructions on the Android phone to create a code for the selected files.
- Scan the code with the Apple device. Use the receiving device to open the download page in a browser.
- Download within the availability window. The files are available for 24 hours, so the recipient should complete the download before then.
- Verify the downloaded copy. Confirm the expected files arrived and open correctly. Keep the original until the recipient confirms success.
Google’s security announcement described the initial AirDrop interoperability rollout as beginning with the Pixel 10 family on November 20, 2025. That announcement is useful context for the launch, but the current support page is the better place to check today’s supported models and workflow: Google’s November 20, 2025 announcement and current Quick Share support.
Move files between an Android phone and a Windows PC
Phone Link offers drag-and-drop file sharing between a Windows PC and eligible Android devices. It is useful when the file fits its documented limit, but it is not a route for every large video: Microsoft sets a maximum of 512 MB per file, even though as many as 100 files can be transferred at a time.
- Check eligibility first. Phone Link features have device, app, and Android-version requirements. Microsoft’s support page lists the current requirements; they differ by feature and device, so verify that the particular phone and PC are supported.
- Connect the devices using Phone Link. Follow Microsoft’s setup instructions for the eligible Android phone and Windows PC.
- Drag and drop supported files. You can transfer up to 100 files at a time, but each individual file must be 512 MB or smaller.
- Confirm the destination app can handle the file. Microsoft notes that not every receiving app accepts every file type. A transfer can therefore be blocked by the receiving app even when the file meets the size limit.
- Open the copy on the PC. Check that the file arrived and works before removing the phone’s original.
Phone Link’s documented drag-and-drop feature excludes folders and files backed up to cloud. If a file is larger than 512 MB, stored only in the cloud, or inside a folder you need to move as a unit, use another suitable workflow rather than expecting drag and drop to bypass the restriction. See Microsoft’s Phone Link transfer instructions for device-specific eligibility and setup.
Send a large iPhone video to someone far away
For a large iPhone video shared by email, Apple documents Mail Drop. It provides a download period rather than requiring the recipient to accept a nearby AirDrop transfer: recipients have 30 days to download Mail Drop attachments.

- 2-in-1 Dual Design: Features both USB-C and USB-A connectors, making it compatible with phones, tablets, MacBooks, PCs, and laptops-no adapter needed
- Wide Compatibility: Works seamlessly with USB A and USB C devices, ensuring reliable file transfers across smartphones, computers, and more
- Ample Storage Options: Available in 16GB/32GB/64GB/128GB providing plenty of space for photos, videos, music, and documents
- Portable & Lightweight: Compact and durable design for travel, school, or daily use-take your files anywhere
- Plug-and-Play Convenience: No software or drivers required; simply insert into USB-C or USB-A ports and start transferring files instantly
- Attach the video to an email from the iPhone. Use the email sharing workflow and choose Mail Drop when it is offered for the large attachment.
- Send the message to the recipient. The recipient will need to download the attachment rather than rely on an inline preview.
- Ask the recipient to download it within 30 days. Keep the original on the phone until the recipient confirms the download.
Mail Drop’s documented 30-day window is the relevant timing detail; it is not a promise that every recipient’s email client will display or handle the video identically. Apple’s Mail Drop limits page explains the attachment download period.
Use a download link when devices are not nearby
A download-link workflow is useful when the sender and recipient cannot connect directly, or when a recipient needs time to fetch a file. The file is uploaded to a cloud or file-sharing service and the recipient downloads it from a link. This avoids relying on a nearby-device handoff, but it introduces other dependencies: internet access, upload time, service limits, link permissions, and a retention period chosen by the service.
No single maximum file size, download window, or privacy setting applies to all cloud services. Check the specific service’s current limits and sharing controls before uploading. If you need the recipient to receive an original photo or video, share the original file rather than a compressed preview, and have the recipient verify the download. Do not assume a cloud link preserves every item of metadata or editing history unless the chosen service documents that behavior.

- Use a private recipient setting when the service offers a choice between named recipients and anyone with the link.
- Check how long the link works and whether the recipient must sign in.
- Confirm available storage and file-size limits before starting a lengthy upload.
- Keep the source file until the recipient has downloaded and checked the copy.
Make an offline handoff with external storage
If there is no suitable network or share link, compatible external storage can move a file between devices without an online upload. Apple documents transferring files from iPhone to a storage device, a server, or the cloud. A storage device is not automatically compatible with every phone or computer, so check the required connector or adapter and the drive’s compatibility before relying on it.

- Confirm the physical connection. Check whether the phone connects directly to the storage device or needs an adapter.
- Check drive compatibility. Verify the storage device can be accessed by the phone and the destination computer.
- Copy the original file to the drive. Avoid exporting a reduced-size version if preserving the original is the goal.
- Connect the drive to the destination device and copy the file.
- Open the copied file before erasing or reusing the drive. Keep another copy if the file is important.
Apple’s iPhone guide to storage devices, servers, and cloud transfers covers supported file movement from iPhone. It does not establish universal compatibility for every drive, connector, or file system, so confirm those details for your particular devices.
Check the file before deleting the original
A successful send is not the same as a verified backup. A quick check on the receiving device can catch a failed download, unsupported format, missing file, or an unexpected copy before the source is erased.
- Compare the file identity. Confirm the recipient has the intended file, not just a thumbnail or preview.
- Open it on the destination device. Make sure the photo or video loads and plays as expected.
- Check associated details when they matter. For Apple Photos sharing, use All Photos Data when you need the documented metadata, location, edit history, captions, or original-format video details.
- Retain the original until the other copy is confirmed. This is especially important for remote links that expire or downloads that may be interrupted.
Troubleshoot common transfer problems
The recipient’s device does not appear
For AirDrop, make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on, that the devices are nearby, and that the recipient’s device is set to accept the transfer. For the Android-to-Apple interoperable flow, the Apple recipient must set AirDrop visibility to Everyone for 10 Minutes, and the Android phone must be on Google’s supported list. If it is not, use the QR-code workflow instead, provided both devices have internet.
The file is too large for Phone Link
Phone Link drag and drop cannot transfer an individual file over 512 MB. Splitting a file is not a documented workaround in Microsoft’s guidance; choose a different method that supports the file and the devices involved, such as a download link or compatible storage. Also check that the file is not cloud-backed, since those files are excluded from the documented drag-and-drop feature.
The QR code cannot be used
The QR download route requires internet access on both devices. If either side is offline, use a nearby supported Quick Share/AirDrop transfer or another offline method. If the recipient waits too long, the 24-hour download availability window may have ended; create a fresh share if needed.
The transfer arrives but the result is not what you expected
Check whether the sender shared the original file or a preview or export, and inspect the receiving copy. If associated media details matter, use the workflow that explicitly includes them where available. Do not infer that every transfer method preserves metadata just because the visual content appears unchanged.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Are both devices nearby? Prefer AirDrop for Apple-to-Apple, or Quick Share with AirDrop for a supported Android-to-Apple combination.
- Is the Android model unsupported for AirDrop interoperability? Use the QR route if both devices have internet and the file fits its documented allowance.
- Is the destination a Windows PC? Phone Link is an option for eligible devices when each file is no larger than 512 MB and is not cloud-backed; otherwise choose another workflow.
- Is the recipient remote? Use a link-based download for general sharing, or Mail Drop for an eligible large iPhone video attachment.
- Must the handoff work offline? Consider compatible external storage and verify its connection and compatibility on both ends.
- Do location, captions, edit history, or other associated data matter? For sharing from Apple Photos, enable All Photos Data before sending.
- Is this the only copy? Keep it until the receiving device has a usable, verified copy.
