To share iCloud+ storage, you must already have an Apple Family Sharing group. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Family > Subscriptions > iCloud+, then follow the prompts. On a Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings > Family > Subscriptions > iCloud+ > Share with Family. Family members share the plan’s storage and eligible features, but each person keeps a separate Apple Account and private photos, files, messages, and other data.

iCloud+ storage is a shared pool for the group, not a set of individual quotas. The organizer can share one plan with up to five additional family members. A member who already pays for iCloud+ can either switch to the shared plan (with a refund for the unused portion of the personal plan) or keep the personal subscription while remaining in Family Sharing.

What iCloud+ family sharing actually does

iCloud+ family sharing lets an existing Family Sharing group use one paid iCloud+ storage plan. The plan’s capacity is available to the group as a whole, while every member continues signing in with their own Apple Account. Apple says that photos, documents, and other information remain private even when the service is shared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Family Sharing by itself does not automatically share iCloud+. After creating or joining the family group, someone must explicitly enable iCloud+ sharing from the subscription settings. The person who purchased the shared plan, normally the family organizer, manages the subscription and can increase its capacity. Apple permits the organizer and up to five other family members in a group.

A shared pool, not personal allowances

Apple documents the available plan capacities and group usage, but does not publish a formula that reserves a fixed number of gigabytes for each member. If one person stores a large photo library or device backups, that usage comes from the same pool used by everyone else. Each member can see their own storage use, while the family can monitor the plan’s overall capacity and remaining space.

The pool covers the iCloud data that each participating account stores, such as iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive files, and device backups. A plan does not multiply its capacity by the number of people. For example, five people on a shared 200 GB plan still have 200 GB in total, not 1 TB. If the family’s combined use grows beyond that amount, the plan must be upgraded or members must reduce stored data.

What remains separate

Sharing does not merge Apple Accounts or expose one member’s iCloud content to another. Family members do not receive access to one another’s iCloud Photos libraries, iCloud Drive files, device backups, Notes, or other personal data merely because they use the same plan. Shared features can have their own collaboration controls, but iCloud+ storage sharing alone does not grant permission to browse another person’s content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check these requirements before you start

  • Family Sharing must already exist. If you have not created a family group, set up Family Sharing first and invite the people who should participate.
  • Use an Apple Account. Apple advises checking that the device is signed in if the Family section does not appear.
  • Use a current Apple device and software. Menu names can vary by operating-system version, so look for the Family and Subscriptions sections if the wording differs slightly.
  • Confirm the group’s capacity needs. The plan is shared by everyone, and Apple does not assign automatic per-person quotas.
  • Check regional and device support for premium features. Apple says feature availability varies by country or region and that some features require a compatible device or supported plan.

Set up sharing on an iPhone or iPad

  1. Confirm that you are in the intended Family Sharing group and that the device is signed in to your Apple Account.
  2. Open the Settings app.
  3. Tap Family. If Family is missing, verify the Apple Account sign-in and that Family Sharing has been configured.
  4. Tap Subscriptions.
  5. Choose iCloud+.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions to share the existing iCloud+ plan with the family group.

The exact wording can change with an iOS or iPadOS update, but the current Apple iCloud User Guide places the controls under Family, Subscriptions, and iCloud+. Enabling the option changes who can use the plan; it does not combine anyone’s personal data.

Set up sharing on a Mac

  1. Make sure the Mac is signed in to the Apple Account that manages the family or the iCloud+ subscription.
  2. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  3. Select Family in the sidebar.
  4. Select Subscriptions, then iCloud+.
  5. Choose Share with Family.
  6. Follow the prompts to finish sharing the plan.

If the Family pane is unavailable, check the Apple Account shown in System Settings and verify that the Mac is part of a Family Sharing group. Labels can differ slightly between macOS releases.

Choose the right capacity for the group

Apple’s current iCloud User Guide lists five iCloud+ storage tiers that can be shared with a family. These are total group capacities, not amounts multiplied by the number of members.

iCloud+ tier What the figure represents Who can use it
50 GB Total storage in the shared plan Organizer and participating family members
200 GB Total storage in the shared plan Organizer and participating family members
2 TB Total storage in the shared plan Organizer and participating family members
6 TB Total storage in the shared plan Organizer and participating family members
12 TB Total storage in the shared plan and the maximum tier listed by Apple Organizer and participating family members

Apple does not publish a rule such as “choose a certain tier for a certain number of people.” Estimate the group’s actual use instead: count photo and video libraries, iPhone and iPad backups, iCloud Drive files, and any other services using iCloud storage. Leave room for growth rather than selecting a tier that is already nearly full.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 50 GB plan may be sufficient for a small amount of shared use, while families with several devices, extensive photo libraries, or years of backups may need 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB, or 12 TB. Those examples are planning considerations, not Apple’s required member-to-tier rules. Check the storage screen for actual usage before deciding.

Features that may come with iCloud+

Apple lists premium features such as iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, custom email domains, and HomeKit Secure Video. Availability depends on country or region, plan, and compatible hardware. Sharing the plan makes eligible features available to participating members; it does not guarantee that every feature works on every device or in every location.

What happens if a member already pays for iCloud+

A member using Apple’s free 5 GB plan is added to the shared family plan automatically when the family shares iCloud+. A member with an individual paid iCloud+ subscription has two choices and can remain in Family Sharing either way.

Switch to the family plan

On iPhone or iPad, choose Use Family Storage when Apple offers the option. On a Mac, choose Use Shared Plan. Apple says the unused remainder of the member’s personal iCloud+ subscription is refunded when they switch. The personal and shared plans cannot both remain active for the same member.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before switching, check that the family tier has enough room for the member’s existing content. The switch changes which plan supplies capacity; it does not delete photos, files, or backups. The refund applies to the unused remainder of the individual subscription according to Apple’s guidance.

Keep the personal plan

A member can keep paying for their own iCloud+ plan while staying in the family group. Their storage remains separate from the shared plan, so that person’s personal capacity is not added to the family pool and the family plan does not replace it. This can be useful when someone wants an independent subscription, but it means the group has one fewer person using the shared capacity.

Check family usage and buy more storage

On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Family > Subscriptions > iCloud+ > Manage This Subscription. From there, review the plan and, when eligible, purchase more storage.

On a Mac, open System Settings > Family > Subscriptions > iCloud+. The organizer or the family member who purchased the shared plan can upgrade the capacity, up to Apple’s listed maximum of 12 TB. Apple says every member receives a notification when the group is low on storage, so a full plan should not be a surprise if notifications are enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the plan is nearly full

  • Review which categories and family members are using the most space before upgrading.
  • Remove unnecessary old backups, large files, or unwanted media only after confirming that the data is safely stored elsewhere.
  • Upgrade the shared plan if the group’s continuing needs exceed the current tier.
  • Ask members with unusually large libraries to review their own storage choices; because the pool is shared, one person’s growth affects everyone.

Do not assume that deleting an item from one device immediately solves the group’s capacity problem. Confirm that the deletion is intended and that any needed copy exists elsewhere, then allow the account and storage displays to update.

Change which family member shares the plan

Apple allows the current sharer to stop sharing and another member to take over with a new or upgraded plan. Coordinate the change so the group does not spend time without enough capacity.

  1. On the current sharer’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [name] > iCloud > Storage > Family Usage.
  2. Tap Stop Sharing with Family.
  3. The member who will take over buys or upgrades an iCloud+ plan.
  4. That member opens Settings > [name] > iCloud > Storage > Share with Family and invites the other family members.

The bracketed name in Apple’s path is the signed-in person’s name. If a menu is not present, update the device software where possible and confirm that the intended person is the plan purchaser or organizer. Have the replacement plan ready before stopping the old share, and tell members when to select the new shared option.

What happens if sharing stops or someone leaves

A member who uses more than the free 5 GB must obtain an individual plan or join another shared plan to keep the required capacity. If sharing ends and the member’s stored content is above the available limit, Apple says new photos and videos will not upload to iCloud Photos, files will stop uploading to iCloud Drive, and iOS or iPadOS backups will stop completing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Existing content does not become visible to other family members because sharing ends. The immediate risk is synchronization and backup: changes made after the account exceeds its available capacity may remain only on the device until enough space is available or a new plan is purchased. Before leaving a group, check the account’s storage use and arrange replacement capacity first.

Members who are at or below the free 5 GB allowance may continue using that available capacity after leaving, but anyone above it should not rely on the free allowance to absorb the excess. A replacement plan or another shared arrangement prevents interrupted uploads and backups.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Family or Subscriptions is missing

  • Check that the device is signed in to an Apple Account.
  • Confirm that Family Sharing has actually been created; being on the same household network or using the same payment method does not create a family group.
  • Install available iOS, iPadOS, or macOS updates if the labels do not match Apple’s current guide.

A member still sees their personal plan

Paid subscribers are not forced to switch. Ask the member to open their iCloud+ subscription settings and select Use Family Storage on iPhone or iPad, or Use Shared Plan on Mac. If they keep the personal subscription, they remain in the group but continue using their own capacity.

Storage appears full even after sharing

  • Check whether a member chose to keep an individual plan instead of joining the shared pool.
  • Review group usage in the iCloud+ subscription screen; the plan is a common pool, so another member’s backups, photos, or files may account for the increase.
  • Allow time for Apple’s account status and device storage screens to refresh after changing plans.
  • Upgrade the shared plan if the group’s real usage exceeds the current tier.

A feature is unavailable to one member

Verify the member’s country or region, device compatibility, and the plan tier. Apple specifically notes that iCloud+ feature availability varies by region and that some features require supported hardware or software. Storage sharing can be working correctly even when an individual premium feature is not supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wrong person is paying for the plan

The family organizer or the member who purchased the shared plan can buy more storage. If another member needs to take over, use Apple’s stop-sharing and replacement-plan sequence rather than creating a second overlapping family share. Confirm who owns the active plan before making changes.

Practical decisions for different family situations

Everyone uses the free 5 GB plan

Share the iCloud+ plan from the organizer’s device. Members on the free plan are added automatically, then can use the shared capacity for their photos, files, and backups while keeping their own Apple Accounts.

One person has a large photo library

Choose a tier based on the total group requirement, not the number of people. Because there are no published per-member quotas, include that person’s library and expected growth in the family estimate before selecting 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB, or 12 TB.

Several people already pay individually

Have each person decide whether the shared capacity is sufficient. Those who switch receive a refund for the unused remainder of their personal plans, according to Apple. Anyone who needs independent capacity can keep an individual plan without leaving Family Sharing.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The organizer wants to stop paying

Arrange a replacement sharer first. The new plan owner should buy or upgrade iCloud+ and enable Share with Family before members’ accounts lose access to the previous shared capacity.

A member is close to the 5 GB limit

Check whether that person is still on the free plan or has selected a personal subscription. If the family has enabled sharing, a free-plan member should be added to the shared plan automatically. If sharing later ends, exceeding 5 GB can prevent new photos, files, and backups from syncing until replacement capacity is available.

Privacy and account boundaries

iCloud+ sharing is a billing and capacity arrangement, not a shared login. Each participant authenticates with their own Apple Account, and Apple states that photos, documents, and other information stay private. Family members should still use Apple’s normal sharing tools when they intentionally want to collaborate on an album, file, calendar, or other item; joining the iCloud+ plan alone does not grant that access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can family members see my iCloud Photos when we share iCloud+?

No. Apple says each person uses their own Apple Account and that photos, documents, and other information stay private. iCloud+ sharing provides shared capacity and eligible features; it does not open another person’s iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, Notes, or backups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Family Sharing automatically include iCloud+ storage?

No. An existing Family Sharing group is required, but iCloud+ must be enabled separately under Family, Subscriptions, and iCloud+. Follow the iPhone, iPad, or Mac steps in this guide.

How much iCloud storage does each family member get?

There is no published fixed allowance per person. The family uses one shared pool, available in 50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB, or 12 TB tiers. One member’s photos, files, and backups can consume space needed by others.

What happens to my personal iCloud+ plan when I join the family plan?

You can switch to the shared plan or keep your individual subscription while remaining in Family Sharing. If you switch, Apple says the unused remainder of your personal plan is refunded. You cannot use both plans simultaneously for the same account.

Can the family organizer buy more iCloud+ storage?

Yes. The organizer or the member who purchased the shared plan can upgrade it, up to Apple’s listed 12 TB maximum. Members receive a notification when the group is low on storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if I leave the family while using more than 5 GB?

You need your own iCloud+ plan or another shared plan. If your stored content exceeds the available capacity, new iCloud Photos uploads, iCloud Drive uploads, and iPhone or iPad backups can stop completing.

Can someone else take over the family iCloud+ plan?

Yes. The current sharer stops sharing from Family Usage. The replacement member then buys or upgrades an iCloud+ plan and uses Share with Family to invite the other members. Coordinate the change before ending the original share.

Why is an iCloud+ feature unavailable even though storage sharing works?

Apple says feature availability varies by country or region, and some features require a compatible device, software, or supported plan. Check those conditions for the affected member; storage sharing itself may be functioning normally.

The Bottom Line

Set up Family Sharing first, then enable iCloud+ under Family > Subscriptions. Choose a tier for the group’s total storage needs, remembering that the capacity is one shared pool. Personal content remains private, and paid subscribers can switch with a refund for unused time or keep their own plans. Before anyone leaves or stops sharing, arrange replacement storage so photos, files, and backups do not stop syncing.
