The safest way to share a game mod is to separate development from distribution. Keep proprietary source code, unreleased art and audio, credentials, signing keys, internal tools, and restricted third-party material in private storage. Release a controlled, versioned mod package containing only the compiled or packaged mod, its public interface, documentation, configuration examples, and assets whose licenses permit redistribution.

Before uploading anything, check the game’s EULA, SDK terms, and platform rules. A public repository can be viewed and forked, and a Workshop upload is not a secrecy boundary. Treat every public upload as permanent disclosure and design the release around that assumption.

What “sharing a mod” should mean

A player needs a working extension, not your entire development environment. The distributable should let the game load the mod and give users enough documentation to install, configure, troubleshoot, and update it. Contributors may need selected source files or interface definitions, but they do not automatically need your engine project, unreleased assets, build credentials, or internal tools.

  • Private development material: proprietary engine or gameplay code, unreleased models and textures, source audio, editor projects, debug symbols, source maps, CI secrets, signing keys, credentials, internal tools, and dependencies whose licenses restrict redistribution.
  • Public contribution material: code, schemas, headers, examples, documentation, tests, and tooling that you deliberately want others to inspect or modify.
  • Player material: a compiled or packaged mod, permitted assets, configuration files, installation instructions, changelog, and license or attribution notices.

These groups can live in separate repositories, branches, build outputs, or access-controlled systems. The important boundary is that the player package is produced intentionally rather than copied from the development folder.

Build a split-release workflow

1. Keep the development repository private

Use private storage for everything that would create a disclosure, licensing, or security problem if copied. That includes the full source tree, proprietary algorithms, unreleased content, vendor SDKs, private plugins, environment files, build certificates, deployment tokens, and crash dumps that contain paths or source fragments.

Git hosting permissions are not a substitute for this separation. A public repository can be viewed and forked, so one mistaken commit is a disclosure event even if you delete the file later. Restrict membership to people who need it, require multi-factor authentication, and give automated build accounts only the permissions they need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Create a deliberate public surface

If you want community contributions, create a clean public repository containing only material intended for inspection or modification. Typical contents are an API or extension-point description, interface definitions, sample configuration, documentation, tests that do not reveal restricted implementation details, and build instructions for the public portion.

Do not mirror the private repository and hope that an ignore file will hide sensitive content. Ignore rules prevent some new files from being added; they do not remove material already committed, copied into history, or generated into an archive. Review the entire history and release artifacts, not just the current file list.

3. Produce a versioned player artifact

Build the mod from a controlled checkout and publish a versioned archive or the game’s supported package format. The artifact should contain the files the game needs at runtime, not the files your team needs to develop it. Keep the build recipe reproducible enough that you can identify exactly which source revision and dependency versions produced each release.

Unless you have intentionally licensed them, exclude source maps, debug symbols, editor caches, intermediate object files, test fixtures containing restricted content, local configuration, CI variables, signing keys, and source-only assets. A compiled binary can still reveal implementation details through strings, metadata, reflection data, or embedded paths, so decide what level of reverse-engineering exposure your project can tolerate.

Audit rights before you package anything

Read the game’s EULA and SDK terms

The base game’s EULA, official SDK terms, and modding policy define what kind of modification and distribution is allowed. Requirements can differ by game and can change by platform. Check whether the game permits external distribution, requires an official SDK, restricts commercial use, mandates attribution, limits included game content, or requires a specific loader or packaging format.

Valve’s Source guidance says its default expectations are that mods are non-commercial, based on an official SDK, and clearly identified as community projects. It also states: “It’s important to note that shipping a mod based on leaked or stolen source code is not permitted.” Do not build a release around leaked repositories, stolen assets, scraped proprietary files, or an SDK obtained outside the permitted channel.

Verify every included asset

A mod license can cover only rights you own or can sublicense. It cannot grant rights to the base game, a publisher’s characters, another creator’s model, a sound library, a font, or a plugin that forbids redistribution. For every file, determine who owns it, which license applies, whether redistribution is allowed, whether modification is allowed, and what attribution text is required.

Keep evidence for those decisions: the asset’s license file, purchase or permission record, version, source, and any conditions such as “no standalone redistribution” or “attribution in documentation.” If the answer is uncertain, remove the file or replace it with an original or explicitly redistributable alternative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use clear project identification

Where the publisher requires it, describe the project as unofficial and avoid names, logos, screenshots, or artwork that imply endorsement. Use the game’s approved terminology and follow any branding rules in its SDK or Workshop policy. A disclaimer does not cure an otherwise unauthorized use, but accurate identification prevents users from mistaking a community project for an official release.

Make a release manifest

A manifest turns a vague “clean package” into an auditable checklist. List every code file, model, texture, material, sound, font, shader, plugin, configuration file, and generated asset that enters the release. For each item, record:

  • File path and release version.
  • Owner or creator.
  • License and a link or reference to the license record you retain.
  • Whether redistribution and modification are permitted.
  • Required attribution or notices.
  • Whether the file is original, third-party, generated, or derived from game content.
  • The review decision: include, replace, or exclude.

Have a second person review the manifest against the final archive. Compare the archive’s file list with the manifest after compression, because packaging scripts can add files that were not present in the source directory.

Package a release step by step

  1. Freeze the release candidate. Tag the intended source revision and stop making ad hoc changes in the folder used for packaging.
  2. Build in a clean environment. Use a fresh checkout or isolated build workspace rather than a developer’s machine, where cached credentials, editor files, and unrelated assets may be present.
  3. Apply an allowlist. Copy only paths explicitly approved for the player package. An allowlist is safer than trying to blacklist every possible secret or source file.
  4. Strip development data. Remove source maps, debug symbols, editor metadata, temporary exports, crash logs, local paths, test content, and build-system files that are not required at runtime.
  5. Resolve dependencies. Confirm that each bundled library, plugin, font, shader, and runtime component permits redistribution in this form. Do not silently bundle a developer-only SDK.
  6. Embed notices. Include the mod license, third-party attribution, required notices, version, supported game edition, installation path, and contact or issue-reporting method.
  7. Run a content scan. Search the archive and its metadata for secret names, tokens, private URLs, absolute filesystem paths, source extensions, test credentials, and filenames from the private project. Treat a match as a release blocker until explained.
  8. Test as a player. Install the archive on a machine that does not have your development repository, editor, or build tools. Verify that the mod loads, saves configuration correctly, and fails with a useful message when prerequisites are missing.
  9. Inspect the archive manually. Open the compressed file, list its contents, inspect binaries for accidental strings where practical, and compare the result with the manifest.
  10. Record the release. Preserve the source revision, dependency lock information, manifest, checks performed, package checksum, and reviewer approval so you can reproduce or roll back the exact build.

Files to remove or handle carefully

Category Examples Release treatment
Source and project files Engine source, gameplay implementation, editor projects, private headers Exclude unless deliberately published under a license that allows it.
Unreleased creative work High-resolution models, concept art, layered textures, source audio Keep private; include only runtime derivatives you are allowed to redistribute.
Secrets API keys, passwords, tokens, certificates, signing keys, environment files Never ship. Revoke and rotate immediately if one is exposed.
Build and debug data Source maps, symbols, intermediate objects, compiler caches, crash dumps Exclude unless a specific debugging release requires them and the exposure is accepted.
Restricted dependencies Commercial plugins, vendor SDKs, private libraries, licensed fonts Check redistribution terms; provide installation instructions instead when bundling is prohibited.
Game-owned material Extracted models, textures, sounds, scripts, maps, or proprietary code Include only when the publisher’s rules expressly permit it; otherwise reference the required game installation or use original replacements.
Internal operations CI definitions with secrets, deployment scripts, private issue exports Keep in private infrastructure; publish sanitized build instructions if useful.

Choose a distribution channel by risk and control

Channel Who can see or fork source? Compiled package support Permission and update considerations
Private repository Only invited collaborators, subject to access controls Useful for collaboration and controlled builds; not a player-facing channel Best for proprietary development and review. Remove access when a collaborator no longer needs it.
Public repository Anyone can view and fork the published history Can host a cleaned package and documentation, but the repository itself is public Use only for files intended for inspection. History and forks can preserve an accidental disclosure.
Direct download or release page Usually exposes the package, not private source, if you upload only the artifact Good control over archive contents, version labels, checksums, and rollback files Still subject to the game’s EULA, SDK terms, and asset licenses. Protect the account and release files.
Steam Workshop Players see the uploaded item and its metadata, not your private repository Convenient for supported games and automatic delivery Workshop is not a secrecy boundary. Steam’s agreement gives Valve broad operational rights over contributions and requires the uploader to have sufficient rights in uploaded content.

Use a private repository for collaborators, a public repository only for intentionally public material, and a direct package or supported Workshop item for players. The channel cannot make an unauthorized asset lawful or turn a source-inclusive archive into a safe release.

Publishing through a Workshop without leaking source

For a game that supports Workshop distribution, prepare the upload as if it will be copied forever. Build the cleaned package first, inspect the archive, and upload only the files the game needs. Do not point the uploader at your development directory, and do not assume that a hidden or unpublished item is a private repository.

  1. Confirm that the game permits the type of mod and that the SDK or authoring tool is the approved one.
  2. Read the current Workshop rules and the platform agreement that applies to uploaded contributions.
  3. Prepare the package from the allowlist and verify its manifest, notices, and version.
  4. Use a clear title and description that identify the project as unofficial when required.
  5. Check screenshots, thumbnails, tags, and descriptions for unreleased art, private URLs, credentials, or claims of official endorsement.
  6. Upload a test version if the game provides a safe way to validate packaging, then install it as a separate player account or clean profile.
  7. Keep the original package and manifest so you can compare updates, withdraw a faulty version, or document what was uploaded.

Workshop convenience does not remove rights obligations. Steam’s terms require the uploader to have sufficient rights in the contribution, and the platform receives broad operational rights to host and handle it. Include only content you are authorized to submit.

License the mod without overclaiming

Write a mod license that covers your original code and original assets, then list third-party components separately. State what users may do with your work, whether source is included, whether commercial use is allowed, and how attribution must appear. If only the compiled package is public, say so plainly; do not imply that users receive rights to private source.

Use separate notices for material that remains under another license. A permissive license for your code does not relicense a bundled font or a publisher’s game files. Likewise, a “free to download” statement does not grant permission to redistribute third-party content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GitHub’s acceptable-use rules cover proprietary rights such as copyright, trade secrets, patents, and trademarks. Treat those rights as practical release constraints, not paperwork to add after publication.

Prevent accidental disclosure during updates

Control who can publish

Limit release and Workshop permissions to named accounts. Require review before publication, protect maintainer accounts with multi-factor authentication, and separate build permissions from upload permissions where possible. A contributor who can change code does not necessarily need the ability to publish a package.

Make artifacts traceable

Use a unique version identifier and retain the manifest, build revision, dependency versions, and checksum for every upload. Keep old packages available privately even if you remove them from public distribution. This makes it possible to identify exactly what contained a problem and to roll back without guessing.

Review diffs, not just final folders

For each update, compare the new manifest with the previous one. New plugins, changed licenses, newly generated files, and renamed assets deserve explicit review. A harmless-looking update can introduce a vendor library, a private test map, or a build log that was absent from the original release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If proprietary material was exposed

  1. Stop distribution. Unpublish or disable the affected download or Workshop item if the platform allows it.
  2. Revoke secrets. Rotate API keys, passwords, tokens, certificates, and signing credentials immediately; deleting a file does not invalidate a copied secret.
  3. Identify the scope. Determine which versions, repositories, forks, caches, and mirrors may contain the material.
  4. Preserve evidence. Record timestamps, package hashes, access logs, and the affected files for your legal, security, or platform contacts.
  5. Remove history where appropriate. A normal commit deletion may leave the content in repository history or forks, so use the hosting service’s documented sensitive-data removal process and assume copies may persist.
  6. Publish a clean replacement. Rebuild from a reviewed source revision, rerun the manifest and player-install tests, and communicate only the remediation details users need.

If the exposure involves someone else’s code, assets, or trade secrets, pause redistribution and seek qualified legal advice. Do not attempt to conceal the origin by renaming files or changing formats.

Pre-release checklist

  • The development repository and build credentials are private.
  • The player package was built from a clean, tagged revision.
  • An allowlist and manifest cover every file in the archive.
  • Source maps, symbols, caches, logs, secrets, and private tools are absent.
  • Every third-party asset has documented redistribution permission and attribution requirements.
  • The game EULA, SDK terms, and platform rules permit this distribution method.
  • The project is labeled unofficial where required and does not imply endorsement.
  • The package works on a clean player installation without the development environment.
  • A second reviewer inspected the archive, metadata, and manifest.
  • The release version, checksum, source revision, and rollback copy are recorded.

Bottom line for a safe mod release

Publish the smallest package that gives players a complete, usable mod. Keep proprietary source, unreleased assets, secrets, and restricted dependencies private; release only owned or properly licensed material; and treat public repositories and Workshop uploads as permanent, copyable disclosures. Rights review and a repeatable manifest-based build are more reliable than relying on obscurity or a platform’s upload settings.
