An old Android phone can potentially share files on a local network, but the available evidence does not establish a universal setup that turns any phone into a dependable NAS. Treat it as a device-specific experiment: confirm USB-host support, storage power, a suitable file-sharing app, and reliable background operation before relying on it.
What a phone-based NAS can—and cannot—promise
A phone connected to portable USB storage may be able to host files for other devices, but that is not automatically equivalent to a dedicated network-attached storage appliance. The phone, Android version, storage device, and sharing app all affect whether the arrangement works. There is no established speed, uptime, backup, or reliability figure for this setup, so avoid treating it as dependable storage for important files without testing it yourself.
One supported alternative is to attach USB storage to a router that explicitly provides sharing. TP-Link documents local access through Samba/SMB on supported routers; its instructions are for the router feature, not evidence that a phone can host SMB. Android distinguishes portable external storage from adoptable storage. Adoptable media is formatted and encrypted for use with one Android device, with its encryption keys stored on that device. The Android Open Source Project says only storage in stable locations should be considered for adoption and specifically warns: “In particular, USB devices connected to a phone or tablet should never be considered for adoption.” This is a warning against adopting a connected USB device as internal storage—not a ban on using USB storage portably. - Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
For a phone-sharing experiment, keep the USB drive as portable storage. Do not format it as adoptable/internal storage based on the assumption that this will make it a better network drive.
Check compatibility before setting it up
- USB host support: The phone must be able to act as a USB host. An OTG adapter can connect USB storage on compatible hardware, but instructions for one phone do not prove compatibility across Android devices. Check the exact model’s manual; for example, HONOR’s guidance describes connecting USB storage with an OTG cable for its supported devices. HONOR user guide: Connect to a USB storage device.
- Power: Confirm that the phone can power the attached drive and maintain a stable connection. A powered USB hub may help in some configurations, but there is no universal requirement established here; compatibility depends on the devices involved.
- File-sharing app: Verify that an app compatible with your exact Android version provides the network protocol and access controls you need. The evidence here does not establish a current app, supported versions, or app-specific setup instructions.
- Background operation: Check that the chosen service continues running with the screen off and under the phone’s battery-management settings. Background behavior can depend on the device and app; it is not established for every model.
- Client access: Confirm that your computers or other devices can connect to the service on your local network before moving files you depend on.
Set realistic security boundaries
Android’s developer guidance warns that external storage can be removed and modified by other apps, and recommends storing only non-sensitive information there. Android Developers: Security checklist. A network-sharing app adds another access path; do not assume it protects files unless you have checked its current permissions, authentication, protocol, and maintenance status.

Keep the experiment limited to your local network unless you separately understand and secure the remote-access configuration. Documentation for local SMB access through a router does not establish that exposing a phone-hosted share to the internet is safe.

Choose between experimenting with a phone and using router sharing
| Consideration | Phone plus portable USB storage | Supported router USB sharing |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Depends on the phone’s USB-host support, storage, Android version, and file-sharing app. | Depends on whether the exact router supports USB storage sharing. |
| Sharing method | A compatible file-sharing app is required; a universal phone-hosted SMB method is not established. | TP-Link documents local Samba/SMB access on supported routers; remote FTP is a separate option in its documentation. |
| Power and connection | Check whether the phone can power the drive and keep the physical connection stable. | Check the router and storage-device requirements for the specific model. |
| Best fit | A low-cost experiment or limited local file sharing after device-specific checks. | A documented sharing feature, if your router supports it and meets your needs. |
| Performance and reliability | No general speed or uptime figures are established. | No comparative speed or reliability figures are established. |
