The easiest way to share a file depends on which devices you have, whether they are nearby, and whether they can use the same local network. Use Quick Share for supported Android-to-Windows transfers, Windows Nearby sharing between Windows PCs, and LocalSend for mixed devices on one Wi-Fi network. For someone elsewhere, create a cloud link. Android-to-Apple sharing works only on supported models, so check compatibility first.
Choose a transfer method by device and distance

There is no one nearby-transfer feature that works across every PC, phone, and tablet combination. First check the device pairing, then choose a method that fits the distance and network.
Android phone or tablet to a Windows PC: Quick Share
Check compatibility and network requirements
Google lists these requirements for Quick Share between Android and Windows: Android 6.0 or later, a 64-bit Windows 10 or later PC (ARM-based PCs need Windows 11 or later), Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Both devices must be on the same network and within about 5 meters (16 feet). Some office Wi-Fi networks prevent devices from communicating directly. Send a file
- On the Windows PC, open Quick Share and make the PC discoverable to the intended sender.
- On Android, select the files or other content, tap Share, choose Quick Share, and select the PC.
- Accept the incoming transfer on the receiving device.
If the PC does not appear
- Confirm Bluetooth is on and both devices are connected to the same network.
- Check the Windows PC’s visibility setting and keep the devices close together.
- If you are on a managed office network, local device-to-device traffic may be blocked. Google suggests trying a phone hotspot as a workaround for some blocked networks.
Windows PC to Windows PC: Nearby sharing
Nearby sharing is built into supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs and can transfer using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Microsoft’s steps cover Windows 10 as well, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; those instructions do not mean it continues to receive security fixes. Check Microsoft’s Nearby sharing instructions for supported Windows versions and current settings.

- On each PC, open Settings > System > Nearby sharing and choose a visibility option.
- In File Explorer, select the file, choose Share, and select the receiving PC.
- Accept the transfer prompt on the receiving PC.
Microsoft says that choosing Everyone nearby makes the PC’s name and Bluetooth MAC address available to nearby devices. If that exposure is not appropriate, choose the option limited to your own devices where available, and avoid leaving broad discoverability enabled unnecessarily.
Mixed devices on one Wi-Fi network: LocalSend
LocalSend supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Its publisher says transfers use the local Wi-Fi network, require no account, and are encrypted with HTTPS. It is not an internet relay: the devices need to be able to communicate on the same local network. Read LocalSend’s feature and setup information.

- Install and open LocalSend on both devices.
- On the sending device, choose the file and select the receiving device shown in the app.
- Accept the incoming transfer on the receiving device.
If the receiver does not appear, check that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and that the network permits local device-to-device traffic. Guest Wi-Fi and some workplace networks may isolate devices; changing networks may be necessary.

When the recipient is elsewhere: share a OneDrive link
A cloud link is the practical choice when the recipient is not nearby or cannot join the same local network. In OneDrive, share a file or folder by creating a link or inviting specific people by email. Microsoft explains the available approaches in its OneDrive file and folder sharing guide.

- Choose the recipients and access permissions that fit the file; do not assume every link is restricted to its intended recipient.
- Send only the intended link, and review its access settings before sharing sensitive material.
- Remember that this is cloud sharing, not a direct transfer between nearby devices.
Android to iPhone, iPad, or Mac: check the model first
AirDrop-compatible Quick Share is available only on certain Android devices. Google’s current support page names Pixel 8a or later and selected models from other manufacturers; compatibility is device-specific and may change. Check Google’s Android-to-Apple sharing compatibility details for your exact device.
For a supported Android device
On the Apple device, set AirDrop visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes. Send from Quick Share on Android, then accept the incoming transfer on the Apple device.

If the Android device is not supported
Google documents QR-code sharing as an alternative. It requires an internet connection: the file is uploaded to Google servers, encrypted end to end, and available for download for 24 hours. The recipient can scan the QR code to access it. Use this route only if its online handling and temporary availability suit the file.

Privacy and reliability checks before sending
- Limit discovery: Quick Share offers more private visibility choices such as Contacts or Your devices. For Windows Nearby sharing, remember that Everyone nearby reveals the PC name and Bluetooth MAC address to nearby devices.
- Confirm the recipient: Nearby-transfer methods prompt the receiver to accept. Check the device name before sending and the file name before accepting.
- Check network policy: Same-network methods can fail when a router, guest network, or workplace policy blocks device-to-device traffic.
- Check destination and available space: After acceptance, look for the received file in the app’s or operating system’s designated destination, and confirm there is enough storage.
- For remote links, check access: A link may grant broader access than intended. Review the chosen recipient and permissions before sending.
