Sharing contact information no longer has to mean spelling out an email address or typing a phone number: NameDrop, Android’s tap-to-share flow, and QR codes offer different ways to exchange it. The key is knowing what each method actually sends, which devices it supports, and whether the other person needs to accept or save the card.

What changed about sharing contacts?

A handshake-era exchange could be as simple as saying a name, passing over a business card, or manually entering details. Nearby-device tools replace some of that work with a small digital exchange: bring devices together, tap, or scan. The convenience depends on the devices and the steps each person must complete; the feature descriptions do not establish how often people use these methods or how reliable they feel in everyday situations.

How does Apple NameDrop work?

NameDrop is part of AirDrop. Apple says an iPhone and Apple Watch users can bring supported devices close together to start sharing contact information. The people involved can choose to share their own contact card, receive the other person’s, or do both. The sender can adjust the selected fields, and either person can cancel an incomplete exchange by moving the devices apart or locking the iPhone. Apple’s NameDrop guidance explains the flow.

What information does it share?

Apple says NameDrop shares a person’s name, the phone number or email address they choose, and Contact Poster information associated with their Contact Card. You can review and update the relevant information in My Card before sharing. This describes Apple’s stated feature behavior; it is not an independent security audit.

Why does proximity matter?

Bringing devices together helps initiate discovery, but the interaction is not simply a physical handoff. Apple’s AirDrop security guide says the sender emits a Bluetooth Low Energy signal containing a short identity hash based on email addresses and phone numbers associated with the Apple Account. The guide describes this discovery mechanism; it does not establish broader claims about how every contact exchange is handled.

Can Android phones tap to share contacts?

Google documents a tap-based contact-sharing option for compatible nearby Android devices. The recipient can choose whether to save the received contact card. “Compatible” matters: the feature description does not mean every Android phone can exchange contact information with every other device through this flow. See Google’s Android contact-sharing instructions for the supported process.

Which contact-sharing method fits the situation?

Method How it starts What the recipient does Compatibility and limits
Apple NameDrop Bring supported Apple devices close together. Choose whether to receive the other card, share yours, or do both. Apple describes it for iPhone and Apple Watch users; selected details can be adjusted.
Android tap-to-share Tap compatible nearby Android devices together. Choose whether to save the received contact card. Google specifies compatible nearby Android devices; universal device compatibility is not established.
Quick Share QR code Use a QR code to connect nearby devices through Quick Share. Follow the connection and transfer flow shown on the devices. Google documents QR codes as a connection route, not as a universal contact-card import method.
QR business card Scan a QR code that presents contact information. Depending on the card’s setup, save the presented details to smartphone contacts. A documented Wallet business-card workflow supports this use, but behavior may vary by QR code and setup.

Google’s Quick Share guidance explains QR codes as a way for nearby devices to connect. Separately, Veeva’s 2025 guide describes a digital business card in Apple Wallet whose QR code lets a recipient save the representative’s details to smartphone contacts. These are distinct uses: a QR code can help connect devices or present a digital card, but scanning any QR code does not guarantee a full contact card will import.

What should you do if a device exchange feels awkward?

  • Agree on the action first. Say whether you want to share your card, receive theirs, or exchange both before bringing devices together.
  • Check the details you are about to send. For NameDrop, review the chosen phone number or email and associated Contact Poster information in My Card.
  • Use a scan-based fallback when proximity sharing is impractical. A QR business card can present contact details for scanning, but confirm that it offers the information you want and that the recipient can save it.
  • Cancel rather than guess. If a NameDrop exchange is incomplete or you change your mind, move the devices apart or lock the iPhone.

Why can a contact exchange feel like a small act of faith?

A tap or near-touch compresses a social exchange into device discovery, a choice about what to share, and the recipient’s decision to accept or save it. That can feel more like a ritual than passing a card. It is an interpretation, not a measured finding: Apple and Google’s feature documentation and the cited QR-card guide provide no adoption, success-rate, or user-sentiment statistics that show how people generally experience these exchanges.
