To send a fixed point in Google Maps, search for the place or press and hold the map to drop a pin, open the location card, and tap or click Share. Choose a messaging app or copy the map link. When an ordinary address is not precise enough, copy the location’s Plus Code and paste that text into your message. The recipient can search the code in Google Maps.
A pin, place link, and Plus Code all identify a selected location. They do not track you. If you mean that someone should follow your changing position, use Google Maps Location Sharing instead; it is a separate feature with different privacy and availability rules.
Choose what you actually need to send
“Share my location” can describe several different Google Maps actions. Pick the format that matches the recipient’s task before opening the share menu.

Google describes a Plus Code as a way to “Define a specific location for a conventional address. For example, you can identify different entrances to the same building.” That makes it useful when two people could otherwise arrive at different sides of the same property.

Share a pin on Android
Android instructions can vary slightly as Google updates the Maps app, but the action sequence is the same: select the point, open its information panel, and use Share.
Share a searched place
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Search for the business, address, landmark, or other destination.
- Tap the correct result so its information panel opens at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Share.
- Select a messaging app, email app, or another sharing destination. You can also copy the link and paste it into any conversation.
Check the result before sending. A search may return several similarly named places, and a business can have more than one branch. The panel should show the name and map position you intend to share.
Drop a pin at an exact point
- Pan and zoom the map until the desired point is under your finger.
- Touch and hold that point. A dropped pin appears and a location panel opens.
- Swipe up or tap the panel to reveal its actions.
- Tap Share, then choose the messaging app or copy the link.
This method is preferable for a meeting point in a park, a particular building entrance, a roadside pickup point, or any location that does not have a distinct searchable name.
Copy a Plus Code on Android
- Open the selected place or dropped pin’s location details.
- Find the Plus Code in the details panel. It is a combination of letters, numbers, and a plus sign.
- Tap the code to copy it.
- Open your messaging app, paste the code into the conversation, and send it.
Send the Plus Code as text rather than treating it as a web address. The recipient can copy the code into Google Maps search. If the code is being used away from the locality where it was generated, include the city or town name as well.

Share a pin or Plus Code on iPhone or iPad
Google Maps for iPhone and iPad uses the same concepts, although button placement can differ from Android.
Send a searched place or dropped pin
- Open Google Maps and search for the destination, or move the map to the required point.
- For an unlisted point, tap and hold the map to place a pin.
- Open the bottom information panel for the selected place or pin.
- Tap Share.
- Choose Messages, Mail, another app, or Copy to paste the link manually.
Before sending, confirm that the map card names the intended place. A dropped pin may show nearby address information even when the pin itself is slightly away from the building or road you meant.
Copy a Plus Code on iPhone or iPad
- Tap the map at the desired location to place a pin, if one is not already selected.
- Open the bottom panel containing the location details.
- Tap the displayed Plus Code.
- Paste the copied code into your message and send it.
A Plus Code is a location identifier, not a live-position beacon. It remains the same kind of fixed reference after you send it; it does not update if you walk or drive away.
Share from Google Maps on a computer
Desktop Maps offers two related workflows: copying a link for a place or map point, and revealing the Plus Code for an exact coordinate.

Copy a link to a place or map point
- Open Google Maps in a browser and search for a place, or click the map at the point you want to mark.
- Open the location information box if it is not already visible.
- Use the map menu and select Share or embed map.
- In the sharing dialog, choose the link option and click Copy link.
- Paste the link into your message, document, or calendar invitation.
The same dialog can provide embed code when you are placing a map on a webpage. Embed code is intended for a website; a normal share link is the practical choice for a person-to-person message.
Find and copy a Plus Code on a computer
- Click the desired location on the map, or search for a place and select it.
- In the information box, click the displayed coordinates. This opens the fuller location view in the left panel.
- Locate the Plus Code in that left panel.
- Copy the code and paste it into your message.
The coordinates click is an important desktop step. Clicking a point alone may show a small information box without exposing the Plus Code in the left panel.
How the recipient uses a Plus Code
Paste the code into the Google Maps search field and submit the search. Maps should resolve it to the corresponding point. A code can be entered by itself when it is local to the town or city where the searcher is currently located; Google says a six- or seven-digit code may be used alone in that situation. For a recipient searching from another town or city, include the locality, such as JJXX+HR8, Seattle.
Including the city is a good habit when the recipient is traveling, searching from a different region, or using a shortened local code. It removes ambiguity that can occur when the same code fragment could be interpreted relative to different places.

Pin, named place, Plus Code, or live sharing?
Use a named-place link when recognition matters most
A restaurant, hotel, transit station, or public building that already has a clear Maps listing is usually easiest to share as a place link. The recipient sees the name, address information, reviews or opening details that Maps provides, and a route can be started from the same page.
Use a dropped pin when the meeting point is not a listing
A pin is better for a particular corner of a park, a rideshare pickup spot, a construction entrance, or a point along a road. Describe the point in your message as well—for example, “north gate” or “the parking-lot entrance”—because a map marker alone may not explain which side of a large property you intend.
Use a Plus Code when the point must be reproduced precisely
Choose the code when a street address covers a large site, the address is missing, or multiple entrances could lead to confusion. A Plus Code is especially useful for remote roads, beaches, trails, fields, and newly developed areas where conventional addressing is incomplete.
Use live Location Sharing only for changing whereabouts
If the recipient needs to see where you are now and where you move next, a static pin is the wrong tool. Google Maps Location Sharing lets selected people see your device’s recent location and other information according to the sharing setup. Google also documents a shareable link for people who do not have a Google Account; people with that link can see the shared real-time location for up to 24 hours. Availability can be limited by country or region, some Google Workspace domains, and age or account requirements.

Do not substitute a Plus Code for live sharing. The code identifies a place, not a person, and it will not follow your phone.

The map item is more useful when your text removes the remaining ambiguity. A concise message can contain:
- The purpose of the point: meeting spot, delivery entrance, pickup location, or destination.
- A landmark or side of the property, such as “west entrance” or “behind the visitor center.”
- The Plus Code, if exact positioning matters.
- A normal place link as a visual backup when available.
- Any timing information separately from the location itself.
For example: “Meet at the north gate, not the main lobby. Plus Code: JJXX+HR8, Seattle. Maps link: [paste the copied link].” Keep the code and link exactly as copied; changing punctuation or removing the plus sign can prevent Maps from recognizing it.

The recipient says the code does not work
- Make sure the plus sign is present and that no characters were omitted when copying.
- Add the city or town name, especially if the recipient is not currently near the code’s locality.
- Have the recipient paste the code into Google Maps search rather than a browser address bar or a messaging app’s link field.
- Send a map link as a second reference if the code still cannot be resolved.
The pin points to the wrong side of a building
Zoom in before dropping the pin and verify the marker against entrances, driveways, and roads. For a large property, move the pin to the actual access point rather than the center of the parcel. Add a written landmark to explain the intended approach.
The Share button or Plus Code is not visible
Open the location’s full details panel. On Android and iPhone, the action row may be below the initial preview and require a swipe up. On desktop, click the coordinates in the information box to expose the Plus Code in the left panel. Interface labels can change as Google updates Maps, so look for the location details, sharing action, and coordinates even if their order differs.
The recipient cannot open a shared link
Send the copied link again without editing it. If the link opens a broad map view instead of the intended point, include the Plus Code or the place name in the message. Do not assume that every recipient must have a Google Account; the available access depends on the type of share and Google’s current service behavior.
Privacy and accuracy checks before you send
- Confirm that the marker is a place you intend to disclose, not your home or another sensitive location selected accidentally.
- For live sharing, review who is selected and how long access will remain. A link can expose real-time location to anyone who obtains it during its active period.
- Use a static pin or code when the recipient only needs an appointment location; there is no reason to expose movement data for a fixed meeting point.
- Open the shared item yourself once to verify that it resolves to the expected entrance or area.

For a fixed destination, send a pin or place link. For a point that needs address-level precision, add the Plus Code. Reserve Location Sharing for situations in which the recipient genuinely needs to follow a changing position.
