To share an AirTag or another item compatible with Apple’s Find My network, open Find My on your iPhone, tap Items, select the tracker, tap its More button, and choose Add Person under Share AirTag or Share This Item. Enter the other person’s Apple Account information, select the correct account, and tap Done. The invited person must accept the invitation in Find My before the tracker appears in their Items list.
This shares the tracker’s location—not your own location. Personal location sharing for a Family Sharing group is configured separately in Settings > Family > Location Sharing. The sections below cover both settings so you can choose the right one.
Tracker sharing and personal location sharing are different
Find My has two functions that are easy to confuse:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Feature | What family members can see | Where it is configured | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Item sharing | The location of a particular AirTag or compatible Find My item | Find My > Items | The tracker’s owner invites or removes people |
| Family personal-location sharing | A family member’s own device location | Settings > Family > Location Sharing | Each family member chooses whether to share their own location |
Sharing your iPhone’s location with family does not automatically share an AirTag attached to luggage, keys, a bicycle or a pet collar. Conversely, giving someone access to an AirTag does not give that person access to your personal location. Apple describes personal-location choices in its Family Sharing location guide.

What you need before inviting someone
Check these requirements before opening the sharing controls. If one is missing, the Add Person option may be unavailable or the invitation may not complete.
- Two-factor authentication: The tracker owner’s Apple Account must have two-factor authentication enabled.
- Apple Account and iCloud: Every invited person needs an Apple Account, must be signed in to that account, and must use iCloud.
- No child accounts: Apple’s item-sharing guide says a child account cannot be used as the recipient.
- iCloud Keychain: The owner and every borrower must have iCloud Keychain enabled.
- Supported software: The owner and borrowers must use iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14 or later. The current iPhone guide describes the workflow in iOS 27; older versions may show slightly different wording.
- Sharing capacity: One owner can share an item with up to five borrowers, for six users total.
For a third-party product, verify with its maker that the exact model is a Find My-compatible item. Apple says compatible third-party items use the same sharing process as an AirTag, but its guide does not provide a complete model list.
Share an AirTag or compatible item from iPhone
Use the owner’s iPhone for the initial invitation. Keep the recipient’s Apple Account address or phone number available so you can select the correct account when Find My displays matches.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Find My. Launch the Find My app on the owner’s iPhone.
- Open Items. Tap the Items tab at the bottom of the screen. Do not use the People tab; that tab concerns personal location sharing.
- Select the tracker. Tap the AirTag or compatible item that you want the family member to follow.
- Open the item menu. Tap the item’s More button.
- Choose the sharing command. Tap Add Person under Share AirTag or Share This Item. The exact label depends on whether the selected item is an AirTag or another compatible product.
- Enter the invitee’s account details. Type the person’s Apple Account information. Use the account they actually use with iCloud, rather than an old address or a contact entry that is not linked to Find My.
- Select the account. When Find My displays the matching Apple Account, tap that person. You can repeat the add-person action for additional borrowers, up to the five-borrower limit.
- Send the invitations. Tap Done. The item screen lists the invitees and shows their invitation status.
The owner remains responsible for the item. Adding a borrower grants that person access to the item’s Find My location; it does not transfer ownership or allow them to invite unlimited additional users.
What the invited family member must do
Sending an invitation is only half of the process. The recipient must open the invitation and accept it in Find My. Until acceptance, the item will not appear in that person’s Items list.

- Open the Find My invitation on the recipient’s Apple device.
- Review which AirTag or compatible item is being shared and which Apple Account is receiving access.
- Accept the invitation. The item then appears in the recipient’s Find My > Items list.
An invitee can decline. If the invitation is declined or remains pending, the owner can check its status on the shared item’s screen and confirm that the invitation was sent to the right Apple Account. The recipient should also confirm that they are signed in to iCloud, have iCloud Keychain enabled and are using iOS 17, iPadOS 17 or macOS 14 or later.
Check who currently has access
To review sharing for an item, open Find My > Items, select the tracker and open its sharing controls. The item screen shows invited people and whether their invitations are still pending or have been accepted. Check this list when a family member says the tracker is missing from their Items tab: a pending invitation means access has not yet been activated, while an accepted invitation indicates that the issue is more likely on the borrower’s device or account.

Remove a borrower and stop sharing
The owner can revoke access at any time. Removal affects only the selected person; other borrowers continue to have access.
- Open Find My on the owner’s iPhone.
- Tap Items.
- Select the shared AirTag or compatible item.
- Tap the name of the person whose access should end.
- Tap Stop Sharing.
- Confirm the removal.
The former borrower loses access to the item’s location. Apple notes that the person may still receive tracking notifications if the item moves with them, so stopping sharing is not a guarantee that every safety notification disappears immediately.
Handle an “unknown AirTag” request from a family member
There is a separate request route for a person who receives an alert that an AirTag is traveling with them. In that notification, the person can tap Ask Owner to Share AirTag, then tap Ask Owner. Apple limits this request option to people who are in the same Family Sharing group as the owner.

This request path is not required when the owner starts sharing from the item’s controls. It is useful when a family member discovers an alert first—for example, after borrowing a bag or vehicle that contains a relative’s AirTag.

Apple’s guide says a third-party item that works with Find My is shared in the same way as an AirTag:
- Open Find My and tap Items.
- Select the compatible item.
- Tap More, then Add Person under Share This Item.
- Enter and select the recipient’s Apple Account.
- Tap Done, then have the recipient accept the invitation.
The exact product must support Apple’s Find My network. If the item does not appear in the Items tab, consult the maker’s compatibility information; a generic Bluetooth tracker cannot be assumed to support this workflow.
Use an iPad instead of an iPhone
The iPad version follows the same basic sequence. Open Find My, choose Items, select the AirTag or compatible item, open More, choose Add Person, enter the recipient’s Apple Account and tap Done. Apple documents the iPad workflow in its Share an AirTag or item in Find My on iPad guide.
The same account, Keychain, operating-system and six-user limits apply. If the iPad does not offer the sharing command, update it to a supported iPadOS release and confirm that the owner is signed in to the intended Apple Account.

- Waterproof Design & Replaceable Battery: This sturdy tracking tag is water-resistant and ideal for outdoor use. It comes with a user-replaceable CR2032 battery that delivers up to one year of dependable performance.
How location access behaves after sharing
The owner and borrowers see the item, not a person
After acceptance, the borrower can use Find My to view the shared tracker’s location and use the normal item-finding controls available for that item. The permission is tied to that particular AirTag or compatible item. Sharing one tracker does not expose every item in the owner’s account.
Shared-item safety notifications are handled differently
Apple states: “People you’re sharing items with don’t receive tracking notifications when the items are moving with them.” This prevents routine alerts when a borrower is traveling with an item that the owner intentionally shared. The statement applies to people sharing the item through Find My; it does not mean that every safety alert on every device is disabled in every circumstance.
Access is account-based
Because invitations are tied to Apple Accounts, choosing the correct account matters when two people have similar names or several email addresses. If the wrong account accepts, remove that person from the item and send a new invitation to the intended account.
When the tracker does not appear for a family member
Work through these checks in order rather than removing and re-pairing the tracker immediately.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Add Person is missing | The owner’s account or device does not meet a prerequisite | Enable two-factor authentication, confirm iCloud Keychain, sign in to iCloud and update to a supported iOS, iPadOS or macOS version. |
| The invitee cannot be selected | The entered contact is not the Apple Account used with iCloud, or it is a child account | Ask for the recipient’s signed-in Apple Account information and select that account; child accounts cannot be used. |
| The invitation is pending | The recipient has not accepted it | Have the recipient open the Find My invitation and accept it. Verify the invitation status on the owner’s item screen. |
| The recipient accepted but sees no item | Different Apple Account, unsupported software or iCloud/Keychain not enabled | Check the account shown on the recipient’s device, enable iCloud Keychain, sign in to iCloud and update the operating system. |
| A sixth person cannot be added | The item already has the maximum six users, including the owner | Remove an existing borrower, then invite the new person. |
| A removed person still receives a notification | Apple says tracking notifications may continue when the item moves with that person | Confirm that sharing was stopped; understand that notification behavior can persist for an item traveling with the former borrower. |
Sharing with a family group versus sharing with any Apple Account
Being in the same Family Sharing group is not a general requirement for the owner-initiated Add Person workflow. The owner can invite an eligible Apple Account through the item’s sharing controls. Family-group membership matters specifically for the “Ask Owner to Share AirTag” request that appears in an unknown-tracker notification.

That distinction explains why a relative outside the Family Sharing group may still receive an owner’s direct invitation, while an unknown-AirTag request may not offer the same request button.
Do not use Family location sharing for an item
If your goal is for relatives to find a shared set of keys, suitcase or bicycle, stay in Find My > Items and share the item. If your goal is for relatives to see where you are carrying your iPhone, use Settings > Family > Location Sharing and choose your personal sharing preference. Each family member controls their own personal-location choice, as described by Apple’s Family Sharing support article.
Using the wrong tab can produce a confusing result: the family may see your phone but not the AirTag, or see the AirTag while having no access to your personal location. Configure the two permissions independently when you need both.

Practical examples
A shared suitcase for a group trip
The suitcase owner shares its AirTag from Find My > Items with the relatives traveling with the bag. Each traveler accepts the invitation and can then check the item in their own Items list. If one traveler leaves the trip, the owner can remove that person without changing the access of the remaining travelers.
A family bicycle
For a bicycle used by several people, the owner can invite up to five borrowers. If all six available user slots are occupied and another rider needs access, remove a borrower who no longer uses the bike before sending a new invitation.
A child carrying a family item
The tracker can be shared with eligible adult Apple Accounts, but Apple’s stated requirement excludes a child account as the recipient. A parent should use an eligible adult account for item access and use the separate Family Sharing controls for any personal-location decision that the family member is allowed to make.
Limits worth remembering
- There are six users per item maximum: one owner plus five borrowers.
- Every borrower must accept an invitation; simply entering an address does not grant access.
- Two-factor authentication is required for the owner.
- All participants need iCloud Keychain and supported operating-system versions.
- A child account cannot be used as an item-sharing recipient.
- Removing a person revokes item-location access but may not immediately prevent tracking notifications when the item is moving with that person.
For Apple’s complete wording and the latest interface labels, see Share an AirTag or other item in Find My on iPhone.
