For a PDF or other multi-page document, upload it to a file-hosting service, set access for the recipient, and paste its share link into an Instagram DM. Instagram’s documented chat message types do not list documents as native attachments, so the link is the practical workaround; the exact feature set can vary by account or rollout.
Send a multi-page file through an Instagram DM
- Upload the file. Use a file-hosting service that creates a shareable link. No particular service is required.
- Check access. Set the file so the intended recipient can view or download it, then test the link if possible. Options and labels depend on the hosting service.
- Open the Instagram conversation. Paste the link into the message field as ordinary text.
- Add context and send. Briefly identify the file so the recipient knows what the link contains.
This link-sharing method is a workaround described by FlipLink’s guide to sending a PDF in an Instagram DM; it does not upload the document as an Instagram attachment.
Can you attach a PDF or document directly?
A secondary guide summarizing Instagram Help Center’s “Types of messages you can send in chats on Instagram” lists text, photos and videos, posts, disappearing photos and videos, and profiles—but not documents or PDFs. That describes Instagram’s documented message types, not proof that every account, app version, or rollout behaves identically. The available evidence does not establish a general-purpose document attachment feature in ordinary consumer chats.

Send a one-page document as an image
If the file is a single-page flyer, poster, or price list, you can send that page as a photo. This sends an image of the page, not the original document file, and it is not a substitute for sharing a multi-page PDF.
What if the recipient has not accepted your message request?
Meta says message requests to people who do not follow you or are not already connected to you are text-only until they accept the chat. That can prevent you from sending media before acceptance. See Meta’s announcement on stricter message settings.

Why do some instructions show an attachment option?
Some business or developer workflows are different from the standard Instagram app. For example, HubSpot’s instructions for replying to Instagram DMs from its Social tool document file attachments in that business inbox. A Meta Instagram API example covers sending an image attachment by URL. Neither establishes that every Instagram user can attach arbitrary files in an ordinary DM.
