For most people, the best compromise is the phone’s adaptive refresh option. It raises the display refresh rate when scrolling, animations, or supported games benefit from extra smoothness, then lowers it when a high rate is unnecessary. If maximum runtime matters more than fluid motion, use the standard 60 Hz setting, turn off Smooth Display, or cap a ProMotion iPhone at 60 frames per second.

The control is named differently by manufacturer: Samsung Galaxy uses Motion smoothness, Google Pixel uses Smooth Display, and ProMotion iPhones use Limit Frame Rate or Low Power Mode. Menu availability, maximum refresh rate, and behavior vary by model and software, so follow the option your own Settings app actually presents.

What a phone’s refresh rate changes

Refresh rate is the number of times the display can redraw each second, measured in hertz (Hz). A 60 Hz screen refreshes up to 60 times per second. A 90 Hz, 120 Hz, or higher screen can update more frequently, which can make scrolling, system animations, and compatible games look more fluid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refresh rate is not the same as the frame rate produced by an app or game. A display set to 120 Hz cannot create extra frames that an app does not render. Conversely, an app producing more frames than the display can show may not look smoother if the panel is limited to 60 Hz. The setting controls the display’s ceiling or operating range; actual behavior depends on the phone, software, content, and power state.

Higher refresh operation can require more energy. Samsung’s regional support guidance explains that refreshing the screen more times per second requires more battery power. The practical effect is not a fixed number of hours: brightness, mobile signal, background activity, processor load, battery age, temperature, and the panel’s own technology also affect runtime.

Which setting should you choose?

Priority Recommended starting point What to expect
Best balance Adaptive or automatic refresh The phone changes refresh rate according to interaction and content. You retain high-refresh smoothness when useful without forcing the maximum continuously.
Longest practical runtime Standard 60 Hz, Smooth Display off, or a 60 fps cap Less frequent screen updates generally reduce display power use, but the interface may feel less fluid.
Maximum smoothness High or the highest available mode Scrolling and supported games can feel most responsive. Samsung states that its High mode uses more battery than Standard.
Occasional battery emergency Low Power Mode on a ProMotion iPhone, or the phone’s battery-saver mode Battery saver may change other performance, network, and background behaviors in addition to limiting refresh rate.

These are decision rules, not promises of a specific battery-life increase. Official guidance for the phones covered here describes the trade-off qualitatively and does not establish a universal percentage or number of extra hours.

Samsung Galaxy: change Motion smoothness

Samsung calls its refresh-rate control Motion smoothness. The exact modes and maximum rate depend on the Galaxy model, display resolution, software version, and power-saving state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the control

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Use the Settings search field and enter Motion smoothness.
  3. Open the matching display setting.
  4. Choose the mode your phone offers, then tap Apply if that button appears.

Searching is useful because Samsung changes menu organization between One UI versions and device families. If search returns no result, look under display-related settings or check the model’s support documentation; do not assume the feature is available.

Understand Samsung’s modes

  • Standard: Samsung describes this as 60 Hz and says it provides the best battery life. It is the simplest choice when endurance is more important than animation fluidity.
  • High: This uses a higher fixed refresh rate on supported models. The maximum differs by device, and Samsung says it uses more battery than Standard.
  • Adaptive: The phone dynamically changes the refresh rate, up to the device’s supported maximum. Samsung’s US support guide describes Adaptive as adjusting the screen refresh rate up to 120 Hz, but that 120 Hz ceiling does not apply to every Galaxy.

Samsung notes that some combinations of display resolution and power-saving mode can restrict which Motion smoothness choices appear. If High or Adaptive disappears after changing resolution or enabling a power-saving feature, that is a device constraint rather than a fault. Use the modes shown in your own menu.

When to use each Galaxy mode

Choose Adaptive for everyday use if you want smoother scrolling but do not want to lock the panel at its highest rate. Choose Standard during travel, long workdays, or any situation where predictable battery conservation matters more. Choose High only when you value a consistently high refresh rate and accept the additional power demand. A game may still be limited by its own frame-rate setting even when Motion smoothness is set to High.

Google Pixel: turn Smooth Display on or off

Google refers to its variable high-refresh feature as Smooth Display. Google’s battery-help guidance covers Pixel 4 and later, including Pixel Fold, and lists turning off Smooth Display as a way to reduce battery use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find Smooth Display

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Search for Smooth Display.
  3. Open the result and switch the setting off when battery conservation is the priority.
  4. Turn it back on when you want the phone to use its higher-refresh behavior again.

Google’s published battery guidance does not expose one verified navigation path for every Pixel software version. Searching for the exact label is therefore safer than memorizing a fixed sequence of menus. If the setting is absent, your model or current software may not support it, or the feature may be controlled automatically.

What switching it off does

With Smooth Display disabled, the Pixel can use a lower refresh behavior instead of raising the rate for smoother motion. Text, still images, and ordinary app content do not become lower resolution; the change concerns how often the panel updates. Animations may look less fluid, particularly when you are accustomed to a higher rate.

Turning Smooth Display off is a reasonable battery-first test. Use the phone normally for a day or two and compare your own runtime rather than relying on a promised number. Network conditions, brightness, camera use, navigation, and background synchronization can overwhelm the difference between display modes.

iPhone with ProMotion: cap the display at 60 fps

On iPhone models with ProMotion, Apple provides a maximum-frame-rate cap rather than a menu of several manually selectable refresh rates. The cap limits the display to 60 frames per second.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Limit Frame Rate

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility.
  3. Tap Motion.
  4. Turn on Limit Frame Rate.

Apple documents this control as limiting ProMotion iPhones to 60 frames per second. Turn it off to allow the normal ProMotion behavior again. The option appears only on models that support ProMotion.

Use Low Power Mode when you need broader savings

Apple also states that Low Power Mode limits the display refresh rate to 60 frames per second on ProMotion iPhones. It is a broader battery feature, not a refresh-rate-only switch.

  1. On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode, then enable Low Power Mode.
  2. On iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings > Battery, then enable Low Power Mode.

Because Low Power Mode changes other power behavior as well, use Limit Frame Rate when you want to test the display cap by itself. Use Low Power Mode when you also want the system-wide battery measures that Apple associates with that mode.

How adaptive refresh saves power without making everything feel slow

An adaptive system can select different refresh rates instead of running the panel at its maximum all the time. Static content may not need frequent redraws, while a finger gesture, scrolling list, animation, or supported game can trigger a higher rate. The exact schedule and minimum rate are implementation details that vary by phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android Developers describes adaptive refresh behavior in Android 15 as supporting mechanisms such as touch boosts and higher refresh rates for animations on compatible devices. That platform capability does not mean every Android phone exposes the same controls or reaches the same maximum. Manufacturer firmware, panel hardware, thermal limits, resolution settings, and power modes still determine what your device can do.

Adaptive is therefore a practical compromise, not a guarantee that the display will always choose the mathematically lowest-power rate. It may briefly raise refresh during interaction, then reduce it when conditions allow. If your priority is a known 60 Hz ceiling, select the standard or capped option instead.

Match the setting to common use cases

Reading, messaging, and email

These tasks contain long periods of static content interrupted by short scrolls. Adaptive mode usually offers a sensible balance. If you are away from a charger and rarely scroll, Standard on Galaxy, Smooth Display off on Pixel, or Limit Frame Rate on ProMotion iPhone can reduce display activity.

Web browsing and social feeds

Frequent scrolling makes a higher rate easier to notice. Adaptive mode keeps the interface responsive during gestures without forcing the maximum when you stop. If you notice stutter after selecting a battery-saving mode, check whether that mode has constrained refresh options.

Games

A high display setting helps only when the game and phone can produce matching frame rates. Check the game’s own graphics or frame-rate control separately. A 120 Hz display setting does not turn a 60-fps game into a 120-fps game, and heat or power limits may cause a game to reduce performance during long sessions.

Travel and weak-signal conditions

Mobile radios, navigation, camera use, and poor reception can be major battery loads. Use Standard, disable Smooth Display, or enable the iPhone’s 60 fps cap when you need conservative power use. Do not expect the refresh setting alone to offset heavy radio or GPS activity.

Accessibility and motion comfort

Some people prefer less motion or a consistent display cadence. A lower fixed rate can make the interface feel more predictable. On iPhone, Limit Frame Rate is located within Accessibility > Motion, but it is a performance and power control rather than a complete motion-reduction setting.

Troubleshoot missing or ineffective refresh-rate controls

The setting is not listed

  • Confirm the exact manufacturer term: Motion smoothness for Samsung Galaxy, Smooth Display for Pixel, and Limit Frame Rate for ProMotion iPhone.
  • Install available system updates and restart the phone before searching again.
  • Check whether your model actually has a high-refresh panel. A phone without variable or high-refresh hardware cannot add it through software.
  • Review resolution and battery-saver settings. Samsung specifically notes that some combinations can restrict available modes.

The phone still looks like 60 Hz

Not every app renders high-frame-rate content, and some screens are naturally static. Test by scrolling a long webpage or settings list slowly and quickly. If only one app appears limited, inspect that app’s performance settings rather than changing the system refresh control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery life did not improve

Display refresh is only one part of energy use. Compare similar days with brightness, network connection, location services, camera use, and background activity kept as consistent as possible. A short test after changing several settings cannot identify which change mattered. No official source covered here provides a universal hours-saved figure.

The high-rate option keeps reverting

Power-saving modes, thermal protection, low battery conditions, or device-specific policies can temporarily reduce refresh behavior. On Samsung, verify whether a power-saving or resolution setting is limiting Motion smoothness choices. On iPhone, check whether Low Power Mode is enabled if you expected unrestricted ProMotion behavior.

A practical testing method

  1. Record your current mode and note the battery percentage at a consistent start time.
  2. Use the phone normally for one full charge cycle, keeping brightness and major activities roughly comparable.
  3. Change only the refresh-related setting: Adaptive to Standard, Smooth Display on to off, or Limit Frame Rate on.
  4. Repeat the same type of day and compare screen-on time and end-of-day battery percentage.
  5. Restore Adaptive or the higher setting if the runtime gain is too small to justify the less-fluid motion.

This method produces a personal comparison rather than a laboratory result. Battery age, temperature, app updates, and signal conditions can still introduce variation, so treat a single day as indicative rather than conclusive.

Important limits and version differences

Refresh-rate labels and menus change as manufacturers update their software. Samsung’s available maximum differs among Galaxy models; the presence of an Adaptive option does not prove that a particular phone reaches 120 Hz. Pixel instructions can move between releases, which is why searching for Smooth Display is the reliable route described by Google’s battery guidance. Apple’s 60 fps cap applies to ProMotion models, not every iPhone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Official support pages reviewed for these instructions explain the direction of the trade-off but do not publish a comparable battery-savings statistic across the three platforms. A 60 Hz or up-to-120 Hz specification describes an operating setting or hardware limit, not a measured promise of extra runtime. Brightness, applications, wireless radios, battery health, and thermal conditions remain significant variables.

Recommended default

Start with Adaptive or the manufacturer’s automatic behavior. It is the least disruptive way to keep high-refresh smoothness during interaction while allowing the phone to reduce refresh when demand is lower. Switch to Standard, turn off Smooth Display, or enable Limit Frame Rate when you have a clear battery-first reason. Use Low Power Mode on a ProMotion iPhone when you want broader system power savings, understanding that it does more than cap refresh rate.
