In Windows, open Settings > System > Display, select the monitor you want to change, and choose the resolution marked (Recommended). That is Windows’ practical choice for the display’s native resolution. In Windows 11, the menu is under Scale & layout; in Windows 10, it is under Scale and layout.
Using a lower resolution can make text less sharp and may make the picture look small, centered, surrounded by black borders, or stretched. If the expected resolution is missing or changes without you choosing it, check for graphics-driver updates through Windows Update before moving on to model-specific support.
The key detail is to change the setting for the correct screen. On a computer with several monitors, Windows applies the resolution list to whichever display is selected in Settings. The resolution marked Recommended can differ from one monitor to another.

- Open Start, then select Settings.
- Choose System, then Display.
- If more than one monitor is connected, select the monitor you want to adjust. The display preview at the top of the page lets you select a particular screen.
- Scroll to Scale & layout.
- Open Display resolution.
- Select the entry that includes (Recommended).
- If Windows asks you to keep the change, confirm it. If you do not confirm it, Windows can revert to the previous setting.
Windows normally marks the best choice for that monitor with “Recommended.” There is no separate button labeled “native resolution” in the standard Settings page, so the Recommended entry is the ordinary way to select it.
What to expect after selecting it
The screen may briefly redraw when the mode changes. Check small lettering, window edges and straight lines after the change. The intended result is a sharp desktop that fills the monitor without unexpected black space or distortion. If the new mode is not kept, return to the list and select the Recommended entry again, then accept Windows’ keep-change prompt.
Set the native resolution in Windows 10
Windows 10 uses the same main path, with slightly different capitalization in the layout section:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Display.
- When multiple monitors are connected, select the intended display in the monitor diagram.
- Under Scale and layout, open Display resolution.
- Choose the resolution marked (Recommended), then keep the change if Windows requests confirmation.
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025 and recommends moving to Windows 11. The display-resolution control remains available on Windows 10, but an unsupported operating system no longer receives the normal support lifecycle associated with a supported Windows release.
If you are still using Windows 10, the setting itself works in the same general way: select the monitor first and use the Recommended resolution. The support-status change does not turn the control into a different setting; it is a reason to consider Microsoft’s recommended move to Windows 11 separately from this display adjustment.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 paths at a glance
| Windows version | Settings path | Resolution choice |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 | Settings > System > Display > Scale & layout > Display resolution | Select the entry marked (Recommended) |
| Windows 10 | Settings > System > Display > Scale and layout > Display resolution | Select the entry marked (Recommended) |
The wording differs only in the name of the layout section. In both versions, the practical sequence is the same: open Display settings, choose the intended monitor, open Display resolution, and select Recommended.
What “native resolution” means in this menu
A monitor can accept several resolutions, including choices below its native resolution. Native resolution is the pixel dimensions the panel is designed to display directly. Windows generally identifies the appropriate everyday choice by placing (Recommended) beside it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choosing a lower option does not necessarily damage the monitor, but it changes how the desktop is mapped to the panel. Microsoft explains that text may look less sharp and that the image can appear small, centered, edged with black, or stretched when a resolution below native is used. Those symptoms are signs that the selected mode is not the best fit for the panel, rather than evidence that the monitor itself has failed.
Use the Recommended entry for normal desktop work. A different resolution can be useful for a specific application or compatibility problem, but it is not the native-resolution setting Windows is recommending for that display.

Why the Recommended label matters
The list can contain several valid display modes, but they are not equal choices for everyday use. The Recommended label is Windows’ ordinary guidance for the selected screen. It is therefore more useful than choosing a number simply because it is the largest or smallest option in the list.
Do not assume that every monitor connected to one computer should use the same resolution. Each display can have its own pixel layout and its own Recommended entry. Select a screen in the preview before reading or changing its list.
Choose the correct screen before changing anything
When two or more displays are connected, the resolution list applies only to the monitor currently selected in Display settings. Changing the list without first selecting a screen can leave the wrong monitor unchanged while altering another one.
Select a display from the preview
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Look at the numbered monitor preview near the top of the page.
- Click the monitor you intend to configure.
- Use that monitor’s Display resolution list and choose its (Recommended) entry.
The selected monitor is the one whose layout controls you are editing. If you want to configure a second display, select it in the preview and repeat the process. This prevents accidentally applying a setting intended for one screen to another screen with different capabilities.
Identify an unfamiliar monitor number
If you cannot tell which physical screen corresponds to a number, select Identify in the display settings. Windows places the number on each physical monitor, allowing you to match the on-screen preview with the monitor on your desk. Microsoft’s multiple-monitor guidance describes this identification step at How to use multiple monitors in Windows.
Use Identify before opening the resolution list when the monitors are arranged differently from the preview, or when two screens look similar. Once you know the number, select that display and then choose its Recommended resolution.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not confuse resolution with scaling
Resolution controls how many pixels Windows uses for the desktop. Scaling controls the size of text, icons, and app controls within that resolution. If the Recommended resolution is selected but everything is difficult to read, changing resolution is usually the wrong fix: keep the Recommended resolution and adjust Scale instead.
- Stay in Settings > System > Display.
- Select the monitor you are working on if more than one is connected.
- Find Scale in the same Scale & layout (Windows 11) or Scale and layout (Windows 10) area.
- Choose the scale option marked (Recommended) first.
- Sign out or restart only if Windows or an individual app asks you to do so.
Microsoft recommends the Scale option marked Recommended as well. This lets you enlarge interface elements without replacing the monitor’s pixel-matched resolution.
When to change Scale instead of resolution
If letters are crisp but interface elements are too small, the problem is size, not necessarily pixel sharpness. Leave Display resolution at Recommended and try the Scale option Windows marks Recommended. This preserves the display mode Windows considers appropriate while changing the apparent size of text and controls.

Conversely, if the desktop is fuzzy, has black edges, is unusually small in the middle, or looks stretched, inspect Display resolution first. Those are the effects Microsoft associates with using a resolution below the monitor’s native resolution.

What to check when the Recommended option is missing
The normal instruction is to select the entry Windows marks Recommended. If that entry is absent, or the display keeps switching to another mode, start with Windows’ graphics-driver update check.
Check for graphics-driver updates
- Open Start > Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates, including any display or graphics-driver update offered by Windows.
- Restart if Windows requests it, then return to Settings > System > Display and check the resolution list again.
Microsoft identifies checking for available graphics-driver updates through Windows Update as the first step when resolution changes unexpectedly or the expected setting is not available. A driver update may not resolve every hardware, cable, adapter, or compatibility problem, so treat it as the initial check rather than a guaranteed cure.
After updating, revisit the exact monitor that had the problem. A multi-monitor setup can make it appear that a setting has changed when a different display was selected, so use the preview and, if necessary, Identify before judging the result.
If the problem remains
Record the monitor model, the computer’s model, how the monitor is connected, and which resolution choices Windows shows. Then consult the monitor’s model-specific manual or the display or PC manufacturer’s support channel for supported modes. The exact available resolutions depend on that particular monitor, computer graphics hardware, and connection; a generic Windows setting cannot establish every model’s capabilities.
Keep the troubleshooting record precise. Note whether the Recommended entry is missing, whether the screen changes back after a restart, or whether the picture is merely too small. These describe different problems: a missing mode calls for support about available display modes, while a small but sharp interface may call for Scale.
Symptoms of a resolution that is too low
These visual results commonly indicate that a lower-than-native mode is selected:
- Soft or fuzzy text: letters do not align as cleanly with the panel’s physical pixels.
- A small image in the middle: the selected mode uses fewer pixels than the panel and may be displayed without filling the entire area.
- Black borders: unused space appears around the desktop.
- A stretched image: Windows or the display expands the lower-resolution picture to fill the screen, which can distort proportions.
Microsoft summarizes the same warning by noting that monitors can support resolutions lower than their native resolutions, but text will not look as sharp and the display might be small, centered, edged with black, or stretched. The appearance can vary by monitor and connection, so use these symptoms as a reason to check the setting rather than as a diagnosis of a failed panel.
Return to the selected display’s resolution list and choose the entry marked (Recommended). If text is still too small after that change, use Scale rather than lowering resolution.

A practical decision guide
- You want the sharpest normal desktop image: select the monitor, then choose its Recommended resolution.
- Everything is sharp but too small: leave resolution at Recommended and change Scale.
- You have several monitors: use Identify before changing the selected display.
- The resolution changed by itself: check Windows Update for graphics-driver updates, then retest.
- The expected mode never appears: note the hardware and connection details and consult model-specific support after the Windows Update check.
- You see black borders or stretching: check whether the selected resolution is below the Recommended entry, then restore Recommended.
- Only one screen looks wrong: select that physical screen in the preview before changing any setting.
Why Windows may show several resolutions
Monitors and graphics hardware can support multiple display modes. Windows lists those modes so you can use a lower setting when an application or compatibility requirement calls for it, but the list is not a ranking of equal choices. The Recommended label identifies the setting Microsoft considers the usual best choice for the selected display.
A lower mode may still produce a usable picture, which is why it remains available. However, the trade-off can be reduced text sharpness or a picture that is small, centered, bordered in black, or stretched. For ordinary work, the Recommended mode avoids that lower-than-native presentation when the system can offer it.
Because each monitor can have a different native pixel layout, always make the selection with the intended monitor active. The Recommended entry for one screen is not necessarily the right resolution for another screen connected to the same PC.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing the wrong monitor: do not rely on the order of screens on your desk; select the numbered display or use Identify.
- Lowering resolution to enlarge text: use Scale when the Recommended resolution is sharp but too small.
- Assuming every listed mode is equally suitable: use the mode marked Recommended for normal use.
- Treating a driver update as a complete diagnosis: Windows Update is Microsoft’s first check, not a guarantee that every cable, adapter, hardware, or compatibility issue will disappear.
- Continuing with unexplained changes: record the monitor, computer, connection and available choices before contacting model-specific support.
Final check after changing resolution
- Confirm that the correct monitor was selected before the change.
- Verify that Display resolution now shows the entry marked (Recommended).
- Look at small text and straight lines for improved sharpness.
- Check that the picture fills the screen without unexpected black borders or stretching.
- If readability is the issue rather than sharpness, adjust Scale and leave the Recommended resolution in place.
- If the option is still missing or the setting changes again, run Windows Update > Check for updates and then consult the monitor or PC maker with the recorded details.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Recommended resolution definitely the monitor’s native resolution?
It is Windows’ practical indicator for the display’s usual best choice. The standard Settings page does not provide a separate button labeled “native resolution,” so selecting the entry marked Recommended is the ordinary method.

What if the resolution keeps changing back?
Check Windows Update for graphics-driver updates, as Microsoft identifies that as the first step for unexpected resolution changes. If the behavior continues, use model-specific support rather than assuming a generic Settings change will identify the cause.
Does this procedure work in Windows 10?
Yes. The path is Settings > System > Display > Scale and layout > Display resolution, followed by the entry marked Recommended. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025 and recommends moving to Windows 11.
Do I need a new monitor, cable or repair tool?
Not for the documented setting change. The procedure uses Windows Settings. A monitor maker’s manual or support channel becomes relevant only when the expected mode is missing or the problem persists after the Windows Update check.
