To set a service area in Bing Places, manage or claim your business listing, edit its profile, and enter the genuine cities or regions where your staff serve customers at their locations. If customers do not visit your business address, hide it from search results—but still provide a valid address for verification. Save the changes, then check the public listing; Bing does not publish a fixed timeline for when edits appear.
What a Bing Places service area means
A service area describes where your business goes to serve customers, rather than a location customers visit. Bing’s Places API documentation describes the setting as regions, towns, or cities where you deliver goods or services at customers’ locations. It is intended for Professionals & Services businesses, and Bing’s help says a business must either have a physical address open to customers or send employees to visit customers in an area.
Use the setting to reflect where the business actually operates. It is not a list of places you hope to reach, a substitute for a real business location in verification, or a way to claim service in cities where you do not serve customers.
The key distinction is where the customer receives the service. A service area applies when staff go to a customer’s location to deliver goods or perform a service. It is different from simply having customers come to a shop, office, or other public-facing address. A business may have both a customer-facing location and travel-to-customer work; in that case, the address and service-area information each describe a different part of the customer experience.

For example, a professional who travels to customers in several towns can list the places actually served as service areas. A business that only receives customers at its premises should represent that customer-facing location rather than treating nearby towns as places it serves at customers’ locations. The field is about delivery or service at the customer’s location, not every place from which a potential customer might contact the business.
Choose whether to show your address
Decide based on what happens when a customer visits the address. A business that receives customers at its location can show that location. If customers are served at their own locations and do not visit the business address, hide the address from search results. Bing distinguishes the public-facing address from the valid address needed to verify the listing.
| Business setup | Address presentation | Service area |
|---|---|---|
| Customers visit a staffed or customer-facing location | Show the customer-facing address. | Set an area only if staff also travel to serve customers. |
| Staff travel to customers; customers do not visit the business address | Hide the address in search results, while retaining a valid address for verification. | Enter the places where staff actually serve customers. |
| Both in-person visits and travel-to-customer service | Reflect whether the listed address is genuinely open to customers; do not hide a customer-facing location solely because you also travel. | Describe the places served at customers’ locations. |
Hiding an address is a display choice, not a way to avoid supplying an address to Bing. Bing Places help says businesses must provide a valid address for verification, while service providers can hide it from search results. Keep those two purposes separate when you edit the profile: Bing needs valid business information to verify the listing, while customers see the address presentation appropriate to how they are served.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not hide an address simply because you have added service areas. The relevant question is whether the address is open to customers. If customers can visit the listed location, the public address should reflect that fact. If the business does not receive customers there and staff instead visit customers, the address can be hidden in search results while the valid verification address remains part of the listing information.
In the API data model, the address-visibility option is called HideAddress; setting it to true hides the address in Bing search results. That field name is useful when interpreting technical documentation, but the ordinary dashboard may present the setting differently.
How to add or change your service area
Bing directs owners to Bing Places for Business to claim or update a listing that appears in Bing Maps search results. Its published workflow is to claim or add the listing, complete the profile, and verify it. The public help pages do not establish a stable, current click-by-click route to the service-area control, so follow the controls shown in your account rather than relying on button names that may have changed.
- Open Bing Places for Business and locate the listing. Sign in and find the existing business listing you need to manage. If it is not listed, use the add-listing flow. Claiming an existing listing and adding a new one are both supported routes.
- Open the listing’s profile-editing flow. Select the relevant listing and use its current profile editing controls. Microsoft’s support guidance identifies Bing Places as the route for claiming or updating business information, but does not specify durable labels for every dashboard control.
- Enter the service locations. Add only the regions, towns, or cities where the business delivers goods or services at customers’ locations. Check spelling and make sure each place reflects actual service coverage.
- Set address visibility to match customer access. If customers do not visit the address, choose the available option to hide it from search results. Keep a valid address in the business information for verification.
- Submit the profile changes and complete verification if prompted. Bing describes verification as protection against unauthorized changes. Its product information describes PIN verification through a business address, phone, or email; the method offered can depend on what is available for the listing.
- Inspect the public listing. After submitting, look at the listing as customers see it. Confirm that the service locations appear as intended and that the address is shown or hidden appropriately.
Before you edit: decide what the listing should communicate
Before opening the profile controls, make two decisions. First, identify the places where employees actually visit customers to deliver goods or services. Second, decide whether the business address is genuinely customer-facing. Making these decisions in advance helps you enter service locations consistently and choose address visibility based on the real setup rather than on a desire to display or conceal a particular place.

Use the same practical test for every place you consider adding: does the business deliver goods or perform services at customers’ locations there? If the answer is no, the place does not meet Bing’s documented description of a service area. A town that is nearby, desirable for expansion, or a source of online inquiries is not enough by itself. Include locations the business actually serves, and do not imply coverage that the business does not provide.
Bing’s API describes the field as an optional array of service areas. In practical terms, the places are entered as regions, towns, or cities; the documentation’s example uses several city names. This supports using recognizable geographic places rather than writing a marketing slogan or listing broad claims that do not identify where service is delivered. The documentation does not set out a maximum number of areas or prescribe a particular naming format for ordinary dashboard users, so do not rely on an invented limit or exact formatting rule.
How to choose the right places
Start with the actual service footprint, not the outer boundary of where you might be willing to travel in unusual circumstances. The service-area setting should help a customer understand where the business routinely provides service at the customer’s location. If the business serves a handful of towns, those towns are more faithful to the documented purpose than a list of nearby places that staff do not visit.
Review each proposed city, town, or region against the service the business provides. The API definition connects both the location and the activity: the business delivers goods or services to customers at their location in the area. A place is therefore not appropriate just because the business has an office there, advertises there, or can be found by a customer there. Consider whether staff really travel there to serve customers.
When changing an existing service area, compare the new list with the current business operation. Remove places no longer served and add places where customer-location service is now genuinely provided. The goal is an accurate description of present coverage, not preservation of an outdated list or expansion for its own sake. Once the update is submitted, inspect the public listing to see whether the displayed information matches the intended profile.
Claiming, adding, editing, and verifying are different tasks
Claiming an existing listing gives the owner a route to manage the business information already shown in Bing Maps search results. Adding a listing is the alternative when the business is not listed. After locating or adding the listing, the owner completes the profile and may need to verify it. These steps are related, but they are not interchangeable: entering a service area in a profile is an edit, while claim or add establishes the listing being managed, and verification helps protect it against unauthorized changes.
Bing’s product information describes PIN verification through a business address, phone, or email. Follow the method Bing presents for the listing rather than assuming every business receives the same option. The valid address requirement remains relevant even for a service provider that hides its address from public search results. Public address visibility and verification are separate decisions, so hiding the address does not remove the need to provide valid information to Bing.

Which countries support the service-area field?
The Bing Places API documentation lists ServiceAreas support for the markets below. This is the list documented for that API version, not a guarantee that every account or product surface currently offers the same controls. Microsoft Support cautions that some features vary by country or region, so check the options available in your account.
- Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong
- India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway
- Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, UK, and US
This list is a product-availability detail, not a performance ranking or a promise that settings behave identically everywhere. It comes from the API documentation and should be read in that context. If the service-area control is not present in the account, first consider whether the feature is available for the relevant country or region and business setup. Microsoft Support specifically cautions that some features may not be available in every market.
The list also should not be used to infer unsupported rules about which specific cities, boundary sizes, or number of entries Bing will accept in a particular dashboard. The documented information confirms that the field is supported in the named markets and that it describes areas where services are delivered at customers’ locations. The options actually shown in the account are the practical guide for the particular listing.
What to check if the service area does not appear
Bing’s official materials reviewed here do not state how long a service-area edit takes to appear publicly. Avoid treating any specific delay as guaranteed. First, confirm that you submitted the edit and that the service locations and address-visibility choice are correct in the managed profile. Then inspect the public listing again. If the information remains absent or incorrect, contact Bing Places support rather than assuming a particular publication window.
Feature availability may also differ by country or region. If your account does not show a service-area option, check whether the feature is available for your market and business setup; do not assume that every listing has identical controls.
Recommended Free Tools
When the profile and public listing differ, use a short, factual review rather than making multiple speculative changes. Confirm that you edited the intended business listing, that the changes were submitted, and that the profile still contains the places where staff serve customers. Separately check whether the address is meant to be public or hidden. This helps distinguish a missing service-area display from an address-visibility issue without presuming that one setting controls the other.
If the public listing still does not reflect the submitted profile, use Bing Places support. The official information does not provide a guaranteed number of minutes, hours, or days for publication, so avoid relying on a fixed waiting period as evidence that an edit has failed. Equally, do not promise customers that a change will appear by a particular deadline. Check again after submission and escalate if the information remains wrong or absent.

There is no documented performance statistic or ranking guarantee tied to adding a service area in the official materials covered here. Treat the setting as a way to describe where the business serves customers, not as a promise of more calls, higher visibility, or a particular result in search. Accurate service and address information is the purpose of the profile choices described by Bing.
Important caution for API and partner updates
The API warning applies to developers and partner integrations, not necessarily to ordinary dashboard editing. Bing documents Create/Update as a full update: fields omitted from an update payload may be removed. Its API FAQ advises sending complete business data when updating through the API. If you manage the listing through an API or integration, preserve the existing profile fields when preparing an update instead of sending only the changed service-area value.
This distinction matters because a partial-looking API change can have wider consequences. If an integration submits only the new service-area field where a full business record is expected, other omitted data may be removed from the update. The API guidance is to send complete business data. Before an API or partner update, make sure the payload retains the other profile information that should remain on the listing, not just the area being changed.
Do not transfer this API-specific warning to normal dashboard editing as though Bing had confirmed the dashboard works the same way. The reviewed documentation describes full-update behavior for API Create/Update calls and advises complete data for API updates; it does not establish the same behavior for ordinary profile editing. Dashboard users should follow the controls shown in their account and check the resulting profile and public listing after submitting changes.

Setting a service area is a configuration task within Bing Places for Business, which Bing presents as its listing-management service. The documented steps are to claim or add the listing, complete the profile, and verify it. The official materials discussed here do not identify a separate paid product or fee required just to enter a service area, nor do they provide a fixed time for the change to appear. Avoid assuming an exact publication schedule; check the public listing and contact Bing Places support if the submitted information remains incorrect.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add a service area to Bing Places?
Sign in to Bing Places for Business, locate and claim the existing listing or add the business if it is not listed, and open the profile-editing controls. Enter the real regions, towns, or cities where staff deliver goods or services at customers’ locations, submit the changes, and check the public listing. Bing does not document a stable click-by-click sequence for the current dashboard, so follow the controls shown in your account.

Yes. Bing says service providers can hide their address from search results when customers do not visit the business address. Hiding the public address does not mean omitting the valid address Bing requires for verification. If customers visit a customer-facing location, make the address presentation reflect that reality.

Do I need an address for a Bing Places service-area business?
Yes. Bing Places help says businesses must provide a valid address for verification, even though a service provider can hide that address from search results. Address verification and public address display are separate matters.
How do I change the cities my business serves on Bing?
Edit the business profile in Bing Places and update the service-area entries to match the cities, towns, or regions where staff actually serve customers at their locations. Remove places the business no longer serves and add only places where that service is genuinely provided. Submit the update and confirm the public listing reflects the intended information.
Should I add nearby cities where I want to get customers?
Only add places where the business actually delivers goods or services at customers’ locations. Bing describes service areas as regions, towns, or cities where the business serves customers at their location, not prospective markets or places that are merely nearby.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does adding a service area mean I should hide my address?
Not by itself. Address visibility depends on whether customers visit the listed address. A business can have a customer-facing address and also travel to customers; in that case, show the address if it is genuinely open to customers and list the actual travel-to-customer areas separately.
Why can’t I see a service-area option in my Bing Places account?
Microsoft says some features may not be available in every country or region. Bing’s API documentation lists supported markets, but availability can vary by account and product surface. Check the controls and eligibility available for your market and business setup, and contact Bing Places support if needed.
How long does Bing Places take to show a service-area change?
Bing’s official materials do not state a fixed publication time for service-area edits. Submit the change, inspect the public listing afterward, and contact Bing Places support if the information remains absent or incorrect rather than relying on a guaranteed deadline.
Can an API update change other listing information too?
It can. Bing’s API documentation says Create/Update is a full update, so omitted fields may be removed; its API FAQ advises sending complete business data. This caution concerns API or partner integrations and should not be assumed to describe ordinary dashboard editing.
The Bottom Line
Enter only the genuine places where staff serve customers at their locations, and decide whether to show the address based on whether customers visit it. Bing still requires a valid address for verification even when a service provider hides it from search results. Submit the profile update, check the public listing, and contact Bing Places support if the result remains incorrect; Bing publishes no fixed timing guarantee for the change.
