Free Play Days does not have its own parental-control menu. It is a temporary Xbox promotion, so you control a child’s access through the child’s Microsoft/Xbox account just as you would for any other game. Put the child account in your Microsoft family group, apply an age filter, set play-time limits, configure multiplayer and communication permissions, and require approval for purchases. Then verify the promotion’s current game, dates, and regional eligibility.

The promotion can change while your controls remain in place. A game being free for a weekend does not bypass an age restriction, screen-time schedule, privacy setting, multiplayer rule, or purchase-approval requirement.

What Free Play Days changes—and what it does not

Free Play Days is a limited-time selection of Xbox games that eligible players can try without buying the game during the advertised promotion window. The titles, dates, and eligibility can vary by promotion and region. When the window closes, access normally ends unless the game is separately owned or purchased.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Parental controls are attached to the child’s Microsoft/Xbox account and the family settings associated with it. The Free Play Days label does not create a second account type or a special safety mode. That means the same controls continue to apply whether the child is playing a purchased game, a subscription game, or a game offered temporarily through Free Play Days.

Use the Xbox Family Settings app for Xbox-specific controls. If the child also uses Windows or Android, Microsoft Family Safety can manage time limits across connected devices. You can open the Microsoft family dashboard at account.microsoft.com/family.

What you need before changing settings

  • A child Microsoft account: The child should sign in with an account that is listed in your Microsoft family group.
  • Parent or organizer access: Xbox says only a parent using the family-group feature can change a child account’s Xbox privacy and online settings.
  • The Xbox Family Settings app or the family website: The app is the most direct Xbox interface; the website is useful when you are managing several family members or devices.
  • The child’s actual sign-in: Controls apply to the account, not merely to a console. Make sure the child is not using an adult account or another family member’s profile.
  • The current promotion details: Check which Free Play Days title is available, when the offer starts and ends, and whether the child’s account and region qualify.

Do not promise access to a particular title until you have checked the live promotion. The roster and dates are not fixed, and a game shown in one country or account storefront may not be available in another.

Set Xbox parental controls for a Free Play Days game

1. Add or confirm the child in your Microsoft family group

  1. Sign in with the parent account that organizes your Microsoft family.
  2. Open the Xbox Family Settings app, or go to account.microsoft.com/family.
  3. Confirm that the child’s Microsoft account appears as a family member. If it does not, add the child’s account and complete any invitation or consent step Microsoft requests.
  4. Use the child’s profile when changing settings. Adjustments made while viewing the parent profile will not restrict the child’s account.

Family-group membership is important because Xbox uses it to identify which adult is allowed to change a child’s privacy, online-safety, and content settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Apply an age and content filter

  1. In the Xbox Family Settings app, open the child’s profile.
  2. Select the settings icon and open the content or age-restriction controls.
  3. Choose the age level that matches what you are comfortable allowing.
  4. Save the setting, then review the child’s game access again.

Xbox and ESRB guidance describe the age filter as applying across games and other content categories according to the selected rating. A Free Play Days game still has a rating, so temporary availability does not make an age-inappropriate title exempt from the filter.

Use the age filter as the broad safety boundary. If you want to allow one exception, review the individual approval options shown by the app rather than raising the child’s overall age level for a single weekend.

3. Set a daily play-time limit and allowed hours

  1. In Microsoft Family Safety, select the child’s family-member profile.
  2. Choose the device category: Windows, Xbox, or Mobile.
  3. Open Set time limits.
  4. Select Apps, features, and games. Microsoft may display the shorter label Apps and games as the interface changes.
  5. Choose the daily duration and the time window in which play is allowed. If the Free Play Days title appears as its own app or game entry, set the limit on that entry; otherwise apply the appropriate device or game limit offered by the current interface.
  6. Repeat for other device categories if the child can play on more than one connected device.

Microsoft says limits extend across connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices managed through the Microsoft Family Safety app. That makes a cross-device schedule useful when a child might move from the console to a Windows PC or Android device during the same day.

A time limit controls when and how long the child can play; it does not decide whether the game’s content is age-appropriate. Use both the age filter and the schedule.

4. Configure multiplayer, friends, and communication

  1. In the child’s Xbox Family Settings profile, open the privacy, online-safety, or communication controls.
  2. Choose who can communicate with the child by voice, text, or invitations.
  3. Set whether the child can join multiplayer sessions, create sessions, or play only with approved friends, according to the options shown for the account.
  4. Decide whether multiplayer activity requires your approval.
  5. Save the settings and have the child sign out and back in if the console does not immediately reflect the change.

The Xbox toolkit groups social, multiplayer, and content-restriction controls with privacy settings. A Free Play Days title can include online features, but its promotional status does not loosen those rules. If the game is playable offline, a multiplayer restriction may still allow the offline portion while blocking online participation.

5. Require approval before purchases

Free access during a promotion is different from owning the game. A child may see options to buy the full game, add-ons, virtual currency, or another title in the Microsoft Store. To require approval on the console:

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Go to Profile & system → Settings → Account → Family settings.
  3. Open the child’s account and enable the option that requires a parent to ask or approve before a purchase.
  4. Test the setting with a low-risk store page if you need to confirm that the approval request reaches the parent account.

Purchase approval protects spending; it does not extend a Free Play Days offer. When the promotion ends, the child may need a separately approved purchase or another license to continue.

6. Check the promotion’s dates, title, and eligibility

  1. Open the current Free Play Days listing from the Xbox console, Xbox app, or Microsoft Store.
  2. Read the start and end dates shown for the specific game.
  3. Confirm whether the offer applies to the child’s account, console generation, and region.
  4. Check whether online multiplayer requires an additional service or account eligibility condition shown in the listing.
  5. Tell the child the actual end time rather than promising access “all weekend.” Promotions can end at a stated time and may not follow your local midnight.

The live listing is the authority for the current roster and window. Do not rely on an old screenshot, social post, or a title that was included in an earlier Free Play Days event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which control should you use?

Different settings answer different risks. Use the narrowest control that solves the problem, and combine controls when a child needs both safety and a schedule.

Control area What it governs Best use for a Free Play Days game Where to manage it
Content safety Age rating and access to games or other content categories Prevent a temporary title from being played when its rating exceeds the child’s allowed level Xbox Family Settings app or Microsoft family settings
Time management Daily duration and permitted hours Allow a limited trial session without giving unlimited access during the promotion Microsoft Family Safety; choose the device and Set time limits
Social exposure Friends, invitations, voice or text communication, and multiplayer Permit offline play while restricting chat or unapproved online players Xbox privacy and online-safety settings
Spending control Whether a child can complete a Microsoft Store purchase without an adult Prevent a “free weekend” trial from turning into an unapproved game, add-on, or currency purchase Console path: Profile & system → Settings → Account → Family settings

The Xbox Family Settings app is the most direct choice when the child plays on Xbox. Microsoft Family Safety is more useful for a mixed-device household because its limits can extend across connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices.

How to allow a game without opening everything else

Start with the rating, not the promotion

First check the game’s age rating and content descriptors. If the rating is above the child’s allowed level, leave the filter in place and do not treat Free Play Days as an exception. A free license changes the price and duration of access, not the content category.

Use a short schedule for a first session

For a new title, set a modest daily duration and a defined window. You can increase the allowance later if the game is suitable. A schedule is easier to enforce than a verbal promise, especially when the promotion runs across several days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate solo play from online play

If the child only needs to try the campaign or local mode, keep communication and multiplayer restricted until you have reviewed the game’s online features. If online play is essential, choose an approval level and friend setting that matches the child’s age and your household rules.

Block unapproved spending

Leave purchase approval enabled even when the base game is free. Store pages can present paid editions, downloadable content, subscriptions, and in-game items next to the promotional download.

What happens when the Free Play Days window ends?

Your parental settings remain associated with the child’s account after the promotion. The game’s temporary entitlement is the part that changes. If the child tries to launch the title after the end date, Xbox may show a purchase prompt or indicate that a license is required. The age filter, time limit, communication rule, and purchase approval should still apply to any subsequent game activity.

If you approve a purchase, review the game again under the same family settings. Buying a title does not automatically make it suitable for every child, and a new downloadable item may have its own rating or online features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot the most common problems

The child cannot launch a game that is advertised as free

  • Check that the promotion is still within its published start and end dates.
  • Confirm that the account and region are eligible. Free Play Days availability can differ by region and account.
  • Review the child’s age filter. A rating restriction can block a title even when the promotional price is zero.
  • Make sure the child is signed in to the supervised account rather than an adult or guest profile.
  • Check whether the listing requires a particular console, online entitlement, or other condition shown in the live offer.

The child can play, but the session lasts longer than expected

  • Open Microsoft Family Safety and verify that the limit was set for the correct family member.
  • Check the correct device category: Windows, Xbox, or Mobile.
  • Look under Apps, features, and games or the current Apps and games label and confirm the duration and allowed hours.
  • If the child uses multiple connected devices, review the limits on each relevant category.
  • Confirm that the child is not switching to another account or device that is outside the family setup.

Chat or multiplayer is unavailable

  • Review the child’s privacy and online-safety settings rather than changing the time limit.
  • Check communication permissions separately from multiplayer permissions; one may be allowed while the other is blocked.
  • If your rule requires approval, look for a pending request on the parent account.
  • Have the child sign out and back in after saving a changed setting.

The app labels do not match these instructions

Microsoft updates the Xbox Family Settings and Family Safety interfaces. Look for the same functions—content or age restriction, privacy and online safety, purchase approval, and Set time limits—even if a heading has moved or a label has shortened. The documented time-limit screen may show Apps and games instead of Apps, features, and games.

A purchase request appears during the “free” trial

Check what the request is for. The base game may be included temporarily while an expansion, premium edition, virtual currency, or post-promotion license costs money. Leave purchase approval on and approve only the item you intended.

A practical parent checklist

Use this checklist before the child starts a Free Play Days title:

  • □ The child’s account is in the correct Microsoft family group.
  • □ The parent account, not the child account, made the settings changes.
  • □ The game’s rating fits the child’s selected age level.
  • □ A daily duration and allowed play window are set for every device the child uses.
  • □ Friends, chat, invitations, and multiplayer are set to the desired level.
  • □ Purchase approval is enabled on the child account.
  • □ The live promotion listing confirms the title, dates, region, and eligibility.
  • □ The child knows when the temporary access ends and what requires approval.

Recheck the list whenever the promotion changes title or when the child moves from Xbox to another connected device. The account controls can stay stable, but the game’s rating, online features, and promotional window are title-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Key takeaways

  • Free Play Days is a temporary offer, not a separate parental-control system.
  • Manage the child through Xbox Family Settings and, when needed, Microsoft Family Safety.
  • Use age filters for content, time limits for duration and schedule, privacy settings for social exposure, and purchase approval for spending.
  • Limits can span connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices through Microsoft Family Safety.
  • Always verify the current title, dates, and regional eligibility before allowing a child to play.
