To set up Yoti, install the app, verify your mobile number, create a five-digit PIN, complete the selfie or liveness prompt, and add your own valid identity document when a service requests document-backed verification. When a website or organisation presents a Yoti request or QR code, open the app, review the attributes it wants, and approve only the information you intend to share.
What Yoti does
Yoti is a digital identity app that can create a verified Digital ID and use it for identity checks with participating organisations. The consumer setup is described by Yoti as “Take a quick selfie”, “Add your ID document”, and “Get your verified Digital ID.” Yoti’s current consumer product page reports 23 million worldwide downloads and 8 million UK downloads; those are download totals, not a measure of successful checks or verification accuracy.
The app can be used for account setup and, when a service asks for stronger evidence, for a document-backed check. A requesting organisation determines which attributes and checks are needed. You should therefore expect the screens and required steps to vary by country, service and workflow.
What to prepare before you start
- A working mobile number that can receive a one-time SMS code.
- A phone with a functioning camera and enough light to photograph a document and your face.
- Your own accurate identity details. Yoti’s App Terms require users to provide their own information and a genuine identity document.
- If document verification is requested, an accepted, valid and undamaged document. Examples listed by Yoti include a passport, driving licence, PASS card or national identity card.
Yoti’s app listing says these document types are accepted from more than 200 countries, but the exact list depends on the workflow and jurisdiction. A document accepted for one organisation or country may not be available in another check.

Set up the Yoti app
- Install the official app. Download Yoti from the iOS App Store or Google Play. Use the publisher’s official listing and keep the app updated through the store.
- Enter and confirm your mobile number. Type a genuine number that you control. Enter the one-time code sent by SMS. If the code does not arrive, check signal, confirm the number and request a new code rather than repeatedly entering an old one.
- Create your PIN. Set a five-digit PIN for future access. Yoti’s App Terms state: “You will then create a 5 digit PIN for future access to your App account.” Choose a number that is not obvious and do not share it. If your device supports it, enable Face ID or fingerprint login after the PIN is created.
- Complete the selfie or liveness prompt. Follow the on-screen instructions so the app can bind the account to a real person. The prompt may ask you to move your head, follow a marker or record a short response. Perform the requested movement at a normal pace and keep your face visible.
- Add a document when requested. Photograph your own valid identity document only when the app or a participating organisation asks for document-backed verification. Keep the original document available; screenshots, photocopies or another person’s document do not satisfy the requirement.
- Finish the Digital ID setup. After the required checks pass, the app can show your verified Digital ID. The specific attributes available depend on the evidence you supplied and the service’s configuration.
Complete a digital ID request from a website or organisation
- Start the identity or age-check flow on the requesting website or device.
- When it displays a Yoti request or QR code, open the Yoti app. Scan the QR code if prompted, or follow the in-app request link.
- Read the request screen before approving it. Check the organisation name and each requested attribute, such as name, date of birth, address or another identity detail.
- Approve the share only if the request is appropriate. Yoti lets you choose what information to share with the requesting organisation; do not approve a request merely because it is presented as a QR code.
- Return to the website or organisation’s screen and wait for its confirmation. Some services may ask for a further document, face-match or address step even if you already have a Yoti account.
The identity document itself is not shared with an organisation through a Yoti data share, according to Yoti’s App Terms. The organisation receives the attributes you approve, subject to the service’s configured workflow.
How the identity check works
A document-backed check normally begins with a photo of the identity document. Optical Character Recognition extracts fields such as your name, date of birth, address and document number. Yoti checks whether the document is still valid and, where possible, whether it has been reported lost or stolen.
A configured Identity Verification workflow can add biometric face matching and address verification. Face matching compares the face captured during the check with the portrait on the document. Address verification is an optional requirement set by the organisation, so it may not appear in every flow.

The selfie or liveness action is intended to show that a real person is present rather than a static image. The exact action differs between workflows. Follow the movement or response instructions shown in your app instead of assuming that a single still selfie is sufficient.
How to capture a document that passes
- Use even, bright light. Avoid glare from overhead lamps and direct flash reflections. A window with indirect daylight or a diffuse lamp usually gives the camera more readable contrast.
- Lay the document flat. Keep every corner inside the camera frame and avoid bending, curling or covering the document.
- Remove obstructions. Take the document out of a wallet, sleeve or transparent cover if the case hides an edge or creates reflections.
- Hold the phone steady. Wait for focus before capturing the image. Blurred text makes OCR and authenticity checks harder.
- Show the complete side requested. If the app asks for the reverse side or another page, capture that side rather than submitting the front image twice.
How to complete the selfie or liveness step
- Position the camera at eye level and keep your whole face within the guide.
- Remove items that obscure facial features if the on-screen instructions require it, such as sunglasses or a hat.
- Use a well-lit location without a bright window directly behind you.
- Follow movement instructions slowly and exactly. Looking away, moving too quickly or leaving the frame can cause the prompt to fail.
- Keep the phone steady until the app confirms that the capture is complete.
If Yoti verification fails
First identify which stage failed. A rejected document image has different remedies from a failed liveness or an organisation-specific address check.
Document image rejected
- Retake the image in brighter, even light.
- Remove glare, shadows, cases and covers.
- Place the document flat and include all corners and text.
- Check that the document is valid, legible and undamaged.
- Retry the capture rather than reusing a blurry or cropped image.
Selfie or liveness rejected
- Clean the camera lens and move to a location with balanced lighting.
- Hold the camera at eye level and keep your face inside the guide.
- Repeat the requested movement slowly, following the prompt without improvising.
- If the app offers another attempt, complete it promptly while the request is still active.
Address or face-match requirement rejected
If the document and liveness steps succeed but the overall check fails, the requesting organisation may have configured an additional address or biometric face-match requirement. Review the organisation’s instructions and make sure the address details you supplied match the evidence it accepts. Yoti’s basic account setup can succeed even when an organisation’s stricter workflow does not.

No retry option is available
Do not create multiple accounts or submit someone else’s information. Contact the requesting organisation first, because it controls the particular verification workflow. Contact Yoti support when the app provides no further retry path or directs you to support.

Inspect every sharing request before you approve it. The requesting organisation can ask for particular attributes, and you choose whether to share them. A request for a date of birth, for example, is different from a request for a full identity document image; read the attribute list rather than assuming the service receives everything in your Digital ID.
Yoti’s App Terms say that the document itself is not shared with an organisation through a Yoti data share. The same terms require you to use your own details and a genuine identity document. Never lend your account, PIN or identity document to another person.

The UK App Terms state that information supplied during checking can be kept for up to 30 days and then encrypted. That retention statement is specific to the UK terms; it should not be treated as a universal retention period for every country or workflow. The organisation requesting the check may also have its own lawful records and retention obligations, so read its privacy notice separately.
Protect access to the phone and Yoti account with the five-digit PIN and, where available, device Face ID or fingerprint login. If you lose the phone or suspect that someone knows the PIN, use the account and device-recovery options provided by Yoti and your mobile-device platform.

Choosing between a Yoti Digital ID and a one-time document/selfie check
Some organisations offer both a reusable Yoti Digital ID route and a one-time document/selfie route. The better choice depends on your existing account, the evidence requested and whether the service supports Yoti in your country.

For organisations implementing Yoti
Yoti’s current developer guidance offers ready-made Identity Verification and UK Identity Verification workflows, as well as a custom workflow. Documented checks can include an identity document, biometric face match and optional address verification.
For a no-code Digital ID integration, Yoti’s guide describes registering in Yoti Hub, creating a page containing a QR code and asking users to scan it with the Yoti app. The organisation should configure the minimum attributes needed for its purpose, explain the request clearly and provide a fallback for users whose country or document is not supported.
Practical pre-submission checklist
- The phone can receive SMS and its camera lens is clean.
- You are using your own genuine details and document.
- The document is valid, undamaged and accepted for this particular workflow.
- All document corners, text and security features requested by the app are visible.
- Lighting is even, with no glare or heavy shadow.
- Your face is fully visible and the camera is at eye level.
- You have followed every liveness movement exactly.
- You have read the requested attributes before approving a share.
- You know whether the organisation may request an additional face-match or address check.
What to expect after approval
A successful check returns you to the requesting website or organisation, which decides whether its own eligibility rules are satisfied. Passing Yoti verification does not automatically grant access to a product, account or service if that organisation applies separate age, address, eligibility or fraud-prevention rules.

It can determine whether the problem is an account rule, an unsupported attribute or a mismatch in its own records.
