Yes—you can play Xbox cloud games on a television without owning an Xbox console. The supported route is to run the Xbox app on a compatible smart TV or selected Fire TV streaming device, sign in with a Microsoft/Xbox account, connect a supported controller, and launch a cloud-enabled game. The game runs on Microsoft’s servers and streams to the TV, so the television does not need Xbox hardware.

Compatibility is selective rather than brand-wide. Xbox support depends on the exact TV or streaming-device model, operating-system version, country, account plan and rollout status. Check those details before buying hardware or assuming an app will appear.

What you need before starting

Cloud gaming on a TV is straightforward when all of the prerequisites line up. Prepare these items first:

  • A supported device: Xbox identifies selected LG and Samsung televisions, selected Amazon Fire TV devices and compatible VIDAA OS televisions, including supported Hisense models. A brand name alone does not prove compatibility.
  • A current Xbox/Microsoft account: You can sign in with an existing account or create one during setup.
  • An eligible Game Pass plan: Xbox’s December 19, 2025 getting-started guide lists Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate as including unlimited cloud gaming. The LG launch announcement specified Ultimate for that launch, so check the current requirement shown for your device and country before subscribing.
  • A supported controller: Most games require a gamepad. Xbox lists Xbox Wireless Controllers; the LG guide also names Xbox Adaptive Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller and Sony DualSense. Bluetooth support varies by TV and streaming device.
  • A reliable internet connection: Xbox recommends at least 20 Mbps for stable cloud gaming, with wired Ethernet preferred where practical. A capable device can also use 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  • Supported service availability in your region: Device support, subscriptions and cloud-game availability can differ by country.

Have the TV model number and operating-system version available. Those two details are more useful than the manufacturer name when checking compatibility.

Which TVs and streaming devices support Xbox cloud gaming?

Platform How the app is reached Published compatibility details Important qualification
VIDAA televisions, including supported Hisense models Home Page or Games section after the TV is updated VIDAA OS 9.6 or later The July 30, 2026 rollout was continuing; the update might not yet be offered on every supported television.
LG Smart TVs Gaming Portal from the Gaming Q-Card or Home Page; older supported sets can download the app from the app store 2025 LG TVs, plus webOS 24 or later models including 2022 OLED televisions and selected 2023 models after a firmware update The April 23, 2025 launch announcement specified Game Pass Ultimate. Current terms may differ.
Samsung Smart TVs Xbox app on selected models Xbox identifies selected Samsung TVs as supported The reviewed official pages do not provide an exhaustive current model list.
Amazon Fire TV Install and launch the Xbox app on a supported Fire TV device Selected Fire TV devices The reviewed official pages do not provide an exhaustive current model list; regional availability may differ.

Xbox’s official device information and support pages are the authority for the model you own. A television that looks similar to a supported model may use a different operating-system version or regional firmware and therefore may not show the app.

Set up Xbox cloud gaming on a VIDAA or supported Hisense TV

Xbox’s July 30, 2026 instructions cover compatible VIDAA televisions and supported Hisense models. Follow this route when the TV uses VIDAA OS 9.6 or later.

  1. Check the model and country. Confirm that your exact TV appears in current VIDAA/Xbox compatibility information. The rollout is not necessarily simultaneous for every model or region.
  2. Update the television. Open the TV’s system-update settings and install the available update. Xbox requires VIDAA OS 9.6 or later for the stated rollout. If no update is offered, check the model-specific information from VIDAA support rather than forcing an unrelated firmware file.
  3. Open the Xbox app. From the TV Home Page or the Games menu, select the Xbox app. If it is absent after updating, treat that as a compatibility, region or rollout issue—not as proof that the TV only needs a different account.
  4. Sign in or create an account. Use your Microsoft/Xbox credentials. Make sure the account has the currently eligible Game Pass plan for cloud gaming in your region.
  5. Pair a Bluetooth controller. Put the controller into pairing mode, open the TV’s Bluetooth-device settings and select it. The exact menu wording varies by VIDAA version. Use a controller confirmed for your model if pairing fails.
  6. Select a cloud-enabled game. Browse the catalog in the Xbox app and choose a title marked as available for cloud play. Availability can change by plan, device, region and time.

If the app does not appear even after the TV reports VIDAA OS 9.6 or later, verify the exact model and contact VIDAA support for rollout information. Xbox specifically warned that the update might not yet be available on all supported televisions at launch.

Set up Xbox cloud gaming on an LG Smart TV

LG has two closely related access routes. Newer 2025 televisions can find the app in the LG Gaming Portal. Supported older sets can download it from the TV app store when they run the required webOS version and firmware.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
  1. Confirm eligibility. Xbox’s April 23, 2025 guidance covers 2025 LG TVs and televisions running webOS 24 or newer, including 2022 OLED models and selected 2023 models after a firmware update. Check the exact model, webOS version and region.
  2. Install any available firmware update. A selected 2023 model may need the manufacturer’s update before the Xbox app becomes available. Do not assume every 2023 television qualifies.
  3. Open the Gaming Portal. On supported sets, select the Gaming Q-Card on the LG Home Page, then open the Gaming Portal. If the app is not already listed, use the portal’s app-install option or open the LG app store and search for Xbox.
  4. Launch the Xbox app. Download it when necessary, then open it from the Gaming Portal or the installed-app list.
  5. Sign in or create a Microsoft account. Follow the on-screen sign-in flow. The LG launch announcement specified Game Pass Ultimate; verify the current plan requirement rather than relying on that launch-era condition.
  6. Connect a Bluetooth gamepad. Pair an Xbox controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller, Sony DualSense or another controller listed as compatible for your TV. Use the LG Bluetooth settings if the app cannot see the controller.
  7. Choose a cloud-enabled title. Start a game that your account, plan, device and region currently permit.

If the Gaming Portal is missing, first check the TV’s webOS version and firmware. An unsupported model can still have a similar LG interface while lacking the Xbox app.

Set up a supported Samsung TV or Fire TV device

Samsung televisions

Xbox lists selected Samsung TVs among its TV streaming platforms, but the official pages covered here do not establish a complete current model list. Before changing settings or purchasing a television, check Xbox’s current device-compatibility information for the exact model and region.

On a supported set, the practical sequence is to update the TV, open its app area, install or launch the Xbox app, sign in, pair a compatible Bluetooth controller and select a cloud-enabled game. Menu names can vary by Samsung software version, so use the TV’s current on-screen labels.

Fire TV devices

Xbox supports selected Amazon Fire TV devices. On a compatible device, open the app store, install the Xbox app and launch it. Sign in with your Microsoft/Xbox account, pair a supported Bluetooth controller through Fire TV’s controller settings and choose a cloud-enabled game.

Do not infer support from the presence of an app store or from another Fire TV model. Xbox’s recent update notices identify selected devices, and the complete model list and regional rollout can change. Verify compatibility before buying a streaming device.

How the subscription and game catalog work

Cloud gaming on the cited TV paths requires Game Pass. Xbox’s December 19, 2025 guide lists Essential, Premium and Ultimate as plans that include unlimited cloud gaming. However, platform launches can have narrower conditions: the LG announcement in April 2025 specified Ultimate. The correct plan is therefore the one currently shown for your device, country and account, not necessarily the plan described in an older launch article.

Xbox described its Game Pass library as containing hundreds of titles and said more than two thirds of the library was cloud-enabled as of December 19, 2025. That is a dated service statement, not a permanent catalog ratio. Games can leave or enter cloud availability, and the titles visible to you can vary by time, region, device and plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Game Pass subscription does not make every game playable in every location. If a title is missing, check whether it supports cloud play, whether your plan includes it and whether it is offered in your region. Buying a game separately does not override a device or regional restriction.

Get the network ready for streaming

Cloud gaming sends video to the TV while your controller inputs travel back to the service. Xbox recommends a connection of at least 20 Mbps and prefers wired Ethernet where possible. A 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection can be suitable when the TV or streaming device supports it and the router is close enough to maintain a strong signal.

Why a speed test is not the whole story

A speed result measures throughput, not necessarily latency, jitter or packet loss. A connection can exceed the recommended bandwidth and still feel delayed if the route to the service is congested or the wireless signal repeatedly retransmits data. Streaming quality can also change when other household devices consume capacity.

Practical connection choices

  • Use Ethernet when the TV or streaming device and router are close enough to cable conveniently.
  • For Wi-Fi, prefer the 5 GHz band on equipment that supports it, while keeping the device within reliable range of the router.
  • Pause large downloads and high-bitrate streams on the same network while testing cloud play.
  • If performance varies by time of day, compare a wired test with Wi-Fi and check whether household traffic is the trigger.

Xbox reported that cloud-gaming hours had risen 45% year over year in its December 19, 2025 guide. That figure describes overall service usage, not the performance a particular home will receive.

Pairing and controller guidance

Most games require a gamepad, so controller planning is part of the setup rather than an optional finishing touch. An Xbox Wireless Controller is the most directly aligned option in Xbox’s compatibility guidance, but it is not mandatory if you already own another supported controller.

If the TV cannot find the controller

  1. Charge the controller or replace its batteries.
  2. Disconnect it from another console, computer or mobile device that may have reclaimed the Bluetooth connection.
  3. Put it back into pairing mode and open the TV or streaming device’s Bluetooth settings, not only the Xbox app’s game screen.
  4. Remove an old entry for the controller and pair it again.
  5. Check the TV or Fire TV documentation for supported controller types. Compatibility can differ even when a controller works with another platform.

USB connection options, wired-controller support and Bluetooth menus differ by device. Do not assume a cable that charges a controller also carries input data to the TV.

Troubleshoot the most common setup failures

The Xbox app is not listed

  • Recheck the exact model, operating-system version and region.
  • Install the latest official TV or streaming-device update.
  • For VIDAA, confirm OS 9.6 or later and allow for the continuing rollout caveat.
  • For LG, verify webOS 24 or newer where required and check whether a selected 2023 model needs firmware.
  • For Samsung and Fire TV, consult the current Xbox compatibility list because the reviewed announcements do not establish an exhaustive model list.

Sign-in succeeds but games will not start

  • Confirm that the account has a currently eligible Game Pass plan for that platform.
  • Check whether the specific game is cloud-enabled in your region and plan.
  • Sign out and back in only after confirming the account is the intended Microsoft account; repeatedly switching accounts can make the entitlement appear inconsistent.
  • Check Xbox service-support information if several cloud titles fail at once.

The picture is blurry or controls feel delayed

  • Test Ethernet if available, then compare with 5 GHz Wi-Fi on a capable device.
  • Reduce competing network traffic while playing.
  • Move the wireless device closer to the router or improve the access point’s placement.
  • Restart the TV or streaming device and router before interpreting a temporary degradation as a compatibility failure.

The controller works in the TV menu but not in the game

Verify that the controller is listed as supported for that specific TV or streaming device, then close and reopen the Xbox app after pairing. A controller can be connected at the operating-system level without being accepted by every app or game.

The VIDAA update is unavailable

Xbox stated that the VIDAA update might not yet be available on every supported TV during rollout. Confirm the model with VIDAA support and wait for the official regional release rather than installing firmware intended for a different model.

Choosing between a smart TV app and a streaming device

If you already own a compatible television, using its built-in Xbox app avoids buying another box. The trade-off is that TV compatibility is model-specific and app support depends on the television’s software lifecycle.

A supported Fire TV device can add the app to a television that lacks a compatible built-in platform, but it introduces another device, another Bluetooth pairing point and its own compatibility list. The reviewed sources do not establish that a Fire TV route performs better than a supported LG, Samsung or VIDAA app in every home.

Decision factor Built-in smart-TV app Supported streaming device
Hardware cost No additional streamer if you already own the compatible TV; current TV prices are not established here. Requires a compatible device if you do not already have one; current device prices are not established here.
Compatibility check Exact TV model, operating system, firmware and region Exact streamer model, app support, firmware and region
App installation May be preinstalled or downloaded through the TV portal/app store Install the Xbox app on the device
Controller Bluetooth support depends on the TV Bluetooth support depends on the streamer
Plan requirement Check the current platform-specific Game Pass terms Check the current platform-specific Game Pass terms

Choose based on the exact device you can verify, not on a general claim that one manufacturer supports cloud gaming.

What this setup can and cannot promise

  • No local console is required: the supported TV or streamer receives the cloud session instead of running the game locally.
  • It is not universal TV support: selected models and software versions are supported, not every television from a listed manufacturer.
  • Performance is home-dependent: bandwidth, latency, Wi-Fi conditions and network congestion affect responsiveness.
  • The catalog changes: cloud-enabled games and plan entitlements vary over time, by region and by device.
  • There is no universal price answer: current Game Pass prices, TV prices and streaming-device prices are not established by the cited guidance and can vary by country and promotion.
  • Rollouts can lag behind announcements: a model may be named in an announcement while its update or app remains unavailable in a particular region.

A concise first-time setup checklist

  1. Write down the exact TV or Fire TV model and software version.
  2. Check current Xbox compatibility information for that model and your country.
  3. Update the device using its official update process.
  4. Install or open the Xbox app through the correct platform route.
  5. Sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that holds the eligible Game Pass plan.
  6. Pair a controller confirmed for the device.
  7. Use Ethernet or reliable 5 GHz Wi-Fi, with at least the bandwidth Xbox recommends.
  8. Select a title that is currently cloud-enabled for your plan, device and region.
  9. If any step fails, troubleshoot model support and rollout status before buying another controller or changing accounts.

The Bottom Line

To play Xbox games on a TV without a console, verify the exact supported TV or Fire TV model, update its software, install or open the Xbox app, sign in with an eligible Game Pass account, pair a compatible controller and launch a cloud-enabled title. Compatibility and catalog rules change, so confirm the current Xbox requirements for your model and region before spending money.
