To set up a new Surface Laptop, connect it to power, follow the Windows setup prompts, choose an account and any backup or file-transfer option, configure the sign-in and location features you want, then check for Windows and Surface updates. The precise screens and options vary by Surface model, Windows version, region, and whether the laptop is managed by work or school.
Before you start
- Connect the Surface Laptop to power and leave it plugged in while setup and updates run.
- Have your preferred account details ready. If the laptop belongs to an employer or school, follow its IT instructions before choosing an account or enrolling the device.
- If you are moving from another Windows device, decide whether you want to restore a backup or transfer files and settings. Microsoft describes these options in its Surface setup guidance.
Complete the first Windows setup
Turn on the laptop and follow the instructions shown on its screen. Microsoft’s general guidance does not promise one identical screen-by-screen sequence for every Surface generation, so use the prompts displayed on your particular device.
Choose an account
Sign in with an account appropriate for your situation, or create one if prompted. Microsoft notes that using a Microsoft account can provide online storage and online password-reset support. On a work- or school-managed laptop, account and enrollment requirements may be set by the organization; ask its IT administrator if you are unsure which account to use.

Restore or transfer your files
If you backed up your previous Windows device with Windows Backup, you can restore that backup during setup. If you do not have a backup, Microsoft also points to a file-and-settings transfer route. Choose the option that fits how your previous device was prepared; the prompts and available choices may vary.

Choose how you will sign in
Windows Hello can let you sign in using facial recognition or a fingerprint, when the Surface hardware supports the method. Availability is model-dependent, so do not expect every laptop to offer both. You can review available choices later at Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
Decide whether to enable Find my device
Find my device is optional. To turn it on or check its status after setup, open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Find my device. Microsoft says location reporting requires an internet connection, enough battery power for the laptop to send its location, and sign-in with a Microsoft account. Check for Windows, driver, and firmware updates
- Connect to a stable internet connection and keep the laptop plugged into power.
- Open Windows Update from Settings and install the updates offered to the device. Update availability and rollout timing can vary by model and release.
- Open the Surface app and look in Help & support for update status or an option to open Windows Update.
- After regular updates finish, check for optional updates. Microsoft recommends this as part of its Surface driver and firmware guidance.
Most users can rely on the automatic update route. Microsoft treats manual driver and firmware packages as an advanced option for troubleshooting or deployment. The update history for the Surface Laptop 7th Edition says critical updates are installed automatically during initial setup; that statement applies to that model and should not be assumed for every Surface Laptop. You do not need to create or use a USB recovery drive for ordinary first-time setup. If you later use one to reinstall Windows, Microsoft warns that the process deletes personal files, resets settings, and removes installed apps. Review Microsoft’s Surface reset and recovery instructions before starting a recovery, and protect any files you need to keep.
