To set up Wii MotionPlus, attach the accessory to an original Wii Remote through its External Extension Connector, secure the supplied jacket and lock, then tighten the wrist strap. Start a MotionPlus-compatible game and recalibrate by placing the controller buttons-down on a level, horizontal surface for 10 seconds. A Wii Remote Plus already has MotionPlus built in, so it does not need this add-on.
Know which controller you have
The detachable Wii MotionPlus accessory is designed for the original Wii Remote, the controller that has an External Extension Connector at its bottom. It adds motion-sensing hardware through that connector and is held in place by a dedicated jacket and sliding lock.
Wii Remote Plus is a different controller model. Its MotionPlus technology is built into the remote, so attaching a separate MotionPlus accessory is unnecessary and provides no additional benefit. The add-on cannot turn an incompatible controller into a Wii Remote Plus.
Recommended Free Tools
MotionPlus functions are available only when the game supports them. Look for the MotionPlus icon on the game’s packaging or documentation. A game can still accept a Wii Remote with the accessory attached without using its MotionPlus features; Nintendo’s accessory manual says the unit may remain installed for those games.

What you need before installation
- An original Wii Remote with an External Extension Connector. Nintendo identifies the standard licensed model as RVL-003.
- The Wii MotionPlus accessory, including its MotionPlus jacket and lock.
- A compatible game for testing and calibration. The game should carry the MotionPlus icon.
- Working batteries. You can check the Wii Remote’s battery level from the Wii HOME menu.
- A clear, stable play area and the wrist strap supplied with the remote.
Remove the original Wii Remote jacket before fitting MotionPlus, but keep it. If you later remove the accessory, put that original jacket back on the remote. Do not assume a game supports MotionPlus simply because it uses a Wii Remote; support is software-specific.
How to install Wii MotionPlus
Install the accessory with the Wii Remote turned off or not being used in a game. Work slowly so the plug, wrist strap and jacket are not forced or trapped.
- Remove and save the original jacket. Take the Wii Remote out of its standard silicone jacket and set the jacket aside for later use if MotionPlus is removed.
- Unlock the MotionPlus unit. Move the accessory’s lock to the unlocked position. The unit must be unlocked before the remote can slide fully into its jacket.
- Insert the remote into the MotionPlus jacket. Slide the Wii Remote all the way into the jacket. It should sit fully and evenly rather than stopping partway.
- Route the wrist strap. Pull the strap through the opening at the rear of the MotionPlus jacket. Keeping it outside the joint prevents it from being pinched between parts.
- Fit the accessory over the bottom. Gently place the MotionPlus unit over the bottom of the remote and align it with the External Extension Connector. Do not twist the unit or force an angled plug.
- Connect the plug. Hold both release buttons on the MotionPlus unit while inserting its plug into the remote’s External Extension Connector. Push until the connector is fully seated.
- Inspect the joint. Check both sides and the rear opening. The wrist strap and any edge of the jacket must not be caught between the remote and the accessory.
- Lock the accessory. Slide the lock in the direction shown by its arrow. The lock should travel to its secured position without excessive force.
- Secure the wrist strap. Place the strap around your wrist and tighten the slider before play. Nintendo’s safety instructions call for using the strap during operation, especially for games involving swings or quick movements.
If the accessory will not seat, stop and return to the alignment step. A partially inserted plug can cause intermittent motion data and can be damaged if you try to force the lock. Release the accessory, reseat the remote in its jacket, and try again with the connector straight.
Check the connection before launching a game
After installation, hold the remote and confirm that the MotionPlus unit is not loose and that the lock has not moved back to its unlocked position. The wrist strap should pass cleanly through the jacket’s opening. If the plug is not fully inserted, the controller may still appear to work as a basic Wii Remote while MotionPlus data fails.
Start a game that explicitly supports MotionPlus. If the game does not carry the MotionPlus icon, its software may ignore the accessory; that is not evidence that the hardware is defective. Some titles also require other accessories for particular modes, so MotionPlus compatibility alone does not guarantee that every feature will be available.
Before testing, hold the remote in the position the game expects and read any on-screen instructions. A correct installation does not make every Wii title motion-enabled. If a game behaves normally as a basic pointer but does not react to rotation or more precise movement, verify software support before changing the hardware.
How to recalibrate the Wii Remote with MotionPlus
Nintendo’s recalibration procedure is performed from inside a MotionPlus-enabled game, not from a general Wii settings screen. It applies to an original Wii Remote with the MotionPlus accessory attached as well as to a Wii Remote Plus.

- Launch a game that supports Wii MotionPlus and enter gameplay.
- Place the controller on a flat, horizontal surface. Set it down with its buttons facing down.
- Leave it completely still for 10 seconds. Do not hold it, rotate it or move the surface during this period.
- Pick it up and test the motion required by the game. If the response is centered and stable, resume play.
The 10-second period is Nintendo’s support instruction, not a performance rating or a measurement of accuracy. Recalibration establishes a new resting reference; it does not repair a loose connector, depleted batteries or a game that lacks MotionPlus support.
What calibration can—and cannot—fix
Calibration is most useful when the remote was resting in an unusual position, when motion began to feel offset, or after the controller has been moved between play sessions. The buttons-down orientation gives the game a consistent stationary reference. Keep the surface level and avoid touching the remote during the entire 10 seconds; picking it up early defeats the procedure.
Calibration cannot make an unsupported game use MotionPlus, restore power to depleted batteries, or compensate for a plug that is only partly inserted. It also does not correct a pointer problem caused by the Sensor Bar or by a television’s image-processing delay. If the same fault returns immediately after a careful recalibration, continue with the connection, battery, environment and cross-test checks instead of repeating the procedure indefinitely.
Fix erratic motion or a drifting cursor
Use the checks below in order. This sequence separates a software or setup problem from environmental interference and from a possible hardware fault.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute1. Confirm that the game supports MotionPlus
Check the MotionPlus icon on the game’s packaging. A non-compatible game will not use the add-on’s motion features, even if the accessory is connected correctly. Test with a known MotionPlus title before replacing hardware.
2. Reseat the accessory
Exit gameplay, press both release buttons, and remove the MotionPlus unit. Reinsert the remote fully into its jacket, route the strap through the rear opening, and push the plug straight into the External Extension Connector. Verify that no part of the jacket or strap is trapped, then lock the unit again. Disconnecting and reconnecting during gameplay can coincide with erratic response, so make the connection before restarting the game.
3. Check the batteries
Open the Wii HOME menu and check the remote’s battery indicator. Replace depleted batteries, then restart the game and recalibrate. Nintendo lists changing batteries during gameplay as a possible cause of abnormal MotionPlus behavior; a fresh set followed by a clean restart removes that variable.

4. Recalibrate on a stable surface
Repeat the buttons-down, level-surface procedure for 10 seconds. Use a rigid table or similar surface rather than a cushion, lap or uneven furniture. Keep the controller still for the full interval and test again in the game.

5. Allow the hardware to adjust to the room
Moving the MotionPlus unit quickly from a cold environment into a warm one can coincide with temporary erratic response. Let the controller reach the room’s normal temperature before recalibrating. Avoid rapid, exaggerated movements while checking whether the problem has cleared; Nintendo also identifies moving MotionPlus too quickly as a possible trigger for irregular behavior.
6. Check the controller model and licensing
For a standard Wii Remote, Nintendo identifies licensed model RVL-003. For Wii Remote Plus, the licensed model is RVL-036. If a third-party or unlicensed controller is involved, compatibility and motion behavior may differ from Nintendo’s instructions. Confirm the model marking on the controller before diagnosing the accessory.
7. Test for radio-frequency or infrared interference
Move potential sources of interference away from the console and play area, then test again. For pointer problems, make sure the Sensor Bar is positioned and operating normally and that the remote has a clear view of it. Motion sensing and pointer tracking are related in use but are not the same failure: a controller can have a working MotionPlus connection while its cursor is affected by Sensor Bar placement or the surrounding environment.
8. Cross-test the components
If possible, try the MotionPlus accessory with another compatible original Wii Remote, or try another known-good accessory with the same remote. The results narrow the fault:
- If the problem follows the accessory, inspect its plug, jacket and lock for damage or poor alignment.
- If the problem follows the remote, check its External Extension Connector and batteries.
- If both combinations fail only in one game, investigate that game’s compatibility or software behavior.
- If a different remote and accessory work in the same environment, the original component is the likely cause.
When the cursor moves by itself
A self-moving cursor is not automatically a MotionPlus calibration fault. First distinguish pointer tracking from rotation or aiming inside a MotionPlus game.
- For pointer drift, check the Sensor Bar, its position, the remote’s line of sight and nearby infrared or radio-frequency interference.
- For motion drift during a supported game, verify the plug and lock, check batteries, and perform the 10-second flat-surface recalibration.
- For problems that began after a battery change or after reconnecting the accessory, restart the game and recalibrate before changing settings.
Nintendo also notes that some televisions process incoming graphics internally, which can make an on-screen response appear delayed. That display-processing delay does not damage the Wii console, remote, MotionPlus accessory or television. It is different from a controller that fails to connect, cannot calibrate or produces incorrect motion data.

Original Wii Remote with MotionPlus or Wii Remote Plus?
Both configurations can play software that supports MotionPlus, but the practical setup is different.
| Consideration | Original Wii Remote plus MotionPlus accessory | Wii Remote Plus |
|---|---|---|
| MotionPlus hardware | Added as a separate accessory through the External Extension Connector | Built into the controller |
| Installation | Requires the MotionPlus jacket, plug alignment, release buttons and sliding lock | No separate MotionPlus installation |
| Wrist-strap and jacket check | Strap must pass through the accessory jacket without being pinched; lock must be secured | Uses its own controller jacket and strap arrangement |
| MotionPlus game compatibility | Works when the game supports MotionPlus and the accessory is connected correctly | Works when the game supports MotionPlus without an add-on |
| Existing ownership | Useful when you already have an original Wii Remote and the add-on | Useful when you need a controller with MotionPlus built in |
| Current price or stock | Not established by Nintendo’s support instructions; check the retailer and condition | Not established by Nintendo’s support instructions; check the retailer and condition |
Nintendo says attaching the add-on to Wii Remote Plus is unnecessary and adds no benefit. Some games may still require another type of accessory, regardless of which MotionPlus configuration you use.
Removing, storing and reinstalling the accessory
To remove MotionPlus, stop using the game, move the lock to its unlocked position, and press both release buttons while pulling the unit straight away from the External Extension Connector. Do not pull on the wrist strap or twist the accessory. Once it is removed, fit the original Wii Remote jacket back onto the controller for protection.
When reinstalling later, repeat the full installation sequence rather than leaving the lock partly engaged. Check the connector and jacket for dust, cracks or deformation, and confirm that the strap still passes through the opening freely. A clean, undamaged connection is more important than tightening the lock beyond its normal travel.

- Is this an original Wii Remote with an External Extension Connector, rather than a Wii Remote Plus?
- Does the game show the MotionPlus icon?
- Is the MotionPlus plug fully inserted and the lock fully secured?
- Are the jacket and wrist strap clear of the joint?
- Does the HOME menu show adequate battery power?
- Have you placed the controller buttons-down on a level surface for 10 seconds during gameplay?
- Did the issue start after a battery change, reconnection, temperature change or unusually fast movement?
- Is the controller a Nintendo-licensed RVL-003 or RVL-036 model?
- Could Sensor Bar placement, infrared conditions or radio-frequency interference affect the result?
- Can you isolate the fault by trying another remote or MotionPlus accessory?
If all of these checks pass and the same component fails in a second compatible setup, the remaining issue is likely physical damage or wear in that remote or accessory rather than a calibration setting.

How do I recalibrate Wii MotionPlus?
Enter a MotionPlus-compatible game, place the controller buttons-down on a flat horizontal surface, and leave it still for 10 seconds. Then pick it up and test the required movement.
Why does my Wii Remote cursor move by itself?
Cursor drift can come from Sensor Bar placement, infrared or radio-frequency interference, or the remote’s environment. Check those separately from MotionPlus motion drift, and also verify the plug, batteries and 10-second in-game recalibration.
Can MotionPlus stay attached when a game does not support it?
Yes. Nintendo’s accessory manual says it may remain installed for games that do not use MotionPlus features, although those games will not gain MotionPlus functions.

Which Wii Remote models are identified by Nintendo as licensed?
Nintendo identifies RVL-003 for the standard Wii Remote and RVL-036 for Wii Remote Plus. Third-party or unlicensed controllers may not behave the same way.
Does television processing cause MotionPlus damage?
No. Nintendo notes that some televisions can process graphics internally and make response appear delayed. That display delay does not damage the console, remote, accessory or television.
The Bottom Line
Use the MotionPlus add-on only with an original Wii Remote, install it with the jacket, connector and lock correctly aligned, and secure the wrist strap. Calibrate inside a supported game with the buttons facing down on a level surface for 10 seconds. If drift remains, check software support, connection, batteries, temperature, interference and the individual components before replacing anything.
