Weglot 2.0 can add translated versions to an existing WordPress site without creating a second set of posts and pages in the WordPress editor. Create a Weglot project, install and connect the WordPress plugin with its API key, choose the original and destination languages, verify the language URLs, and then place the language switcher where visitors can use it.
What Weglot 2.0 changes on a WordPress site
Weglot connects your WordPress site to a translation project. The connection needs four things: the Weglot plugin, an API key, the language in which the site was originally written, and at least one destination language. Once connected, Weglot serves translated content at language-specific URLs while the original WordPress content remains in its existing language.
The translated pages are not created as duplicate pages in the WordPress backend. You continue to manage the original posts, pages, menus, and other content in WordPress, while translations are delivered through Weglot’s service and managed through its translation tools. This architecture avoids maintaining a separate WordPress page tree for every language, but it also means that you should not expect a new translated page list in Pages or Posts.

Prepare before installing the plugin
A few checks prevent the most common setup mistakes.
- Identify the original language. This is the language in which the site was created, not the language of your browser or the country where your visitors live.
- Choose destination languages. Start with only the languages you can review and maintain. Each additional language affects your word allowance and translation-review workload.
- Have WordPress administrator access. Installing and activating a plugin requires permission to use Plugins > Add New.
- Know your site’s public domain. You will need to test translated URLs on the live-facing site, including any staging or maintenance mode rules that could block visitors.
- Estimate translated words. Check the text in posts, pages, menus, widgets, headers, footers, forms, and reusable blocks. Compare the total with your Weglot plan before enabling several languages.
- Plan switcher placement. Decide whether visitors should find it in the main navigation, a sidebar or footer widget, or another supported location.
Step 1: Create a Weglot project and obtain the API key
- Open Weglot and create a project for the WordPress website.
- When prompted for an integration, select WordPress.
- Finish project creation. Weglot then makes an API key available for the project.
- Keep the key available for the WordPress connection. Treat it as a site credential and do not paste it into a public post, theme file, screenshot, or support forum.
The project and the WordPress site must refer to the same website. If you create a project for one domain and connect the key to another, the plugin may connect to the wrong translation configuration or fail validation.
Step 2: Install and activate Weglot in WordPress
- Sign in to the WordPress administrator dashboard.
- Go to Plugins > Add New.
- Search for Weglot.
- Choose the Weglot plugin, select Install Now, and wait for WordPress to finish.
- Select Activate.
After activation, a Weglot tab appears in the WordPress dashboard. If the tab does not appear, confirm that activation completed under Plugins > Installed Plugins, and check whether another administrator, security policy, or deployment process disabled the plugin.

Step 3: Connect the plugin and select languages
- Open the Weglot tab in WordPress.
- Paste the API key from the Weglot project.
- Set the Original language to the language in which the site was created.
- Choose one or more Destination languages, which are the languages into which Weglot will translate the site.
- Save the settings.
The original language and destination language fields are not interchangeable. For example, an English site translated into French should use English as the original language and French as a destination language. Selecting French as the original language would describe the site incorrectly and can produce an unexpected translation direction.
After saving, allow the connection to finish before changing several settings at once. If the dashboard reports a key or environment error, use the troubleshooting section below rather than repeatedly generating projects and keys.

Step 4: Verify the translated version on the public site
Open the public website in a new browser tab after the connection is saved. Look for the language switcher and select a destination language. Check more than the homepage:
- Open a post and a page with different layouts.
- Follow an internal link and confirm that the destination remains in the selected language.
- Inspect the header, footer, navigation labels, widgets, forms, and reusable blocks.
- Test a page that contains images with captions, buttons, or embedded content.
- Switch back to the original language and make sure the source version still works.
Weglot’s developer documentation describes language-specific URLs and translated content being delivered without corresponding translated pages in the WordPress backend. Therefore, a successful test is a translated public URL and page—not a new translated entry under Pages or Posts.

Purge caches only after confirming that the translated request reaches the site correctly; indiscriminate cache purges can hide the real cause of a routing problem.
Step 5: Add the language switcher to a WordPress menu
The documented menu method places the switcher in a navigation menu.
- In WordPress, go to Appearance > Menus.
- Select the menu used in the header, footer, or another visible location.
- Find and select Weglot Switcher.
- Choose Add to Menu.
- Drag the switcher to the desired order among the menu items.
- Select Save Menu.
Visit the public site at desktop and mobile widths. Confirm that the switcher is visible, does not push the menu off screen, and remains usable when a translated language has a longer label. If the theme displays different menus on mobile and desktop, add the switcher to each menu that visitors can use.

Weglot’s support documentation also covers widget placement and other placement methods. The exact controls depend on the active theme and its widget areas.

If the theme provides a sidebar or footer widget area, use the WordPress widget screen to place the Weglot switcher there. This is useful when the primary menu is already crowded. Verify that the widget area is actually rendered on the pages where visitors need language selection; some themes hide sidebars on phones or on individual page templates.
Theme-specific locations
A theme may provide header, footer, or navigation locations that are separate from the classic menu editor. Choose a location that appears consistently across the site and test it on posts, pages, archives, and mobile layouts. Avoid placing the only switcher inside a component that disappears on a high-traffic template.
Ordering and labels
Keep the switcher’s order predictable. A visitor should not have to scan several unrelated menu items to find it. Use the language names or labels offered by the integration consistently with the rest of the site, and check that translated labels do not make the control ambiguous.
How translations, URLs, and WordPress content are handled
Translation source and editing workflow
Weglot reads the site’s source content and provides translated output for the selected destination languages. The source remains the WordPress content you edit in the normal way. Translation quality should be reviewed for terminology, names, legal language, calls to action, and context-sensitive phrases before promoting a translated version as complete.

Because translated pages are not represented as separate WordPress backend pages, editors should not try to maintain copies by duplicating every page manually. Doing so creates two content systems that can drift apart and can also inflate the amount of text that must be translated.
Language-specific URLs
Translated versions are available through language-specific URLs. Confirm the URL pattern on your own domain and test direct access to a translated page, not only navigation from the homepage. Direct-link testing catches rewrite, cache, and server rules that a menu click can conceal.
SEO elements described for Weglot 2.0
Weglot’s September 2026 2.0 guide describes language subdirectories, hreflang tags, and translated metadata. These features are intended to identify language versions and provide translated page information, but they are not a guarantee of rankings or traffic. Review page titles, descriptions, canonical behavior, indexability, and language targeting with your normal SEO checks after enabling a destination language.
Translated URL slugs
Weglot’s support page states that translating URL slugs requires the Pro plan or higher and a supported server-side integration such as WordPress. Do not assume that a free or lower plan will translate slugs merely because the visible page text is translated. If localized slugs are important, confirm the requirement against the plan currently offered to your account before changing your URL structure.

Check the word and language limits before expanding
The current pricing information lists the free plan with a fixed allowance of 2,000 translated words and one translated language. Weglot describes this allowance as the total number of unique translated words across languages, and says that it is fixed rather than renewing periodically.

Count more than article body text. Menus, buttons, footer notices, widget text, form labels, metadata, and other repeated strings can contribute to the amount that needs translation. A small site can exceed a word allowance when it contains many templates or several destination languages.
Recheck plan terms immediately before publication. Pricing, allowances, and feature availability can change, and a price shown at one exchange rate or date should not be treated as a permanent USD price.
Troubleshoot connection and translation problems
The API key is rejected in the US dashboard environment
Weglot’s setup instructions include a conditional fix for users of its US environment at dashboard.weglot.us. If that environment reports the documented API-key error, add this line to the WordPress wp-config.php file:
define( 'WEGLOT_ENV', 'env_us' );Place the definition according to WordPress configuration conventions, make a backup before editing the file, and avoid adding a second conflicting definition. This is not a universal requirement for every Weglot account. If the error remains after the environment is set correctly, follow Weglot’s support route rather than changing unrelated WordPress configuration.
The switcher is missing
- Confirm that a destination language is saved in the Weglot settings.
- Check that Weglot Switcher was added to the menu that the active theme actually displays.
- If you used a widget, verify that the selected widget area is visible on the current template and device size.
- Inspect the page while logged out, because administrator-only toolbar or preview behavior can differ from a visitor’s view.
- Check whether custom CSS, a menu plugin, or a theme rule hides the switcher.
The page changes language, but some text does not
Compare the missing text with the source page. Text may come from a widget, a form, a script, an embedded service, or a theme component that is loaded differently from the main post content. Test the header, footer, navigation, and reusable blocks separately. Do not create a duplicate WordPress page as a first response; first identify which component supplies the untranslated string and whether it is included in the translation configuration.
The translated URL returns the original page or an error
- Open the translated URL directly in a private window.
- Clear or bypass page and CDN caches after confirming the Weglot settings are saved.
- Check that the site’s rewrite and server rules allow the language-specific URL pattern.
- Test a simple page and then a complex page to determine whether the problem is global or template-specific.
- Confirm that the requested language is an enabled destination language and that your plan supports the URL feature you are testing.
The site exceeds the word allowance
Audit the unique translated text across the site and remove unused destination languages from the project if they are no longer needed. If the site still exceeds the allowance, select a plan that covers the actual word total and language count. Because the free allowance is fixed rather than recurring, waiting for a monthly reset will not resolve the overage.
Pre-launch checklist
- The Weglot project uses the correct WordPress integration and the API key is connected.
- The original language matches the language of the source content.
- Every destination language has been intentionally selected and fits the plan.
- The homepage, posts, pages, menus, widgets, forms, headers, and footers have been checked in each published language.
- Translated URLs work when opened directly, including on mobile.
- The switcher appears in the menu or widget location used by your theme on all important templates.
- Titles, descriptions, hreflang behavior, canonical settings, and indexability have been reviewed where SEO matters.
- URL-slug translation is enabled only when the plan and WordPress integration support it.
- Caches have been tested after translation changes, and editors know that translated pages are delivered through Weglot rather than listed as duplicate WordPress pages.
When this setup is a good fit
Weglot’s model is useful when you want to add languages without building and maintaining a separate WordPress page hierarchy for each one. It is especially straightforward for a site whose team can review translations centrally and whose URL, metadata, and switcher requirements match the selected plan.
