For a simple shared folder, run Apache WebDAV against a dedicated directory, authenticate every request, and give Apache’s configured service account the required filesystem access. For an existing Nextcloud installation, do not enable Apache WebDAV at all: Nextcloud’s built-in SabreDAV server handles the protocol. In either design, use HTTPS, restrict each account to its intended folder, and test authenticated listing, upload, rename, and deletion before opening the service to the internet.
What WebDAV provides on a VPS
WebDAV is an extension to HTTP that adds remote file operations such as directory listing, upload, download, move, rename, and deletion. A client can present the endpoint as a mounted filesystem or use it from a desktop file manager, script, or synchronization application. It is not a special disk device: the files remain on the VPS filesystem and are modified by the server process that implements WebDAV.

The WebDAV server decides which authenticated user may perform an operation, while Linux permissions decide whether the server process can actually read, create, change, or remove the underlying file. A correctly authenticated user still receives an error if the server process cannot write the repository. Conversely, broad filesystem permissions do not make an unauthenticated endpoint safe.

Use the standalone path when you need a narrowly scoped repository and are comfortable administering Apache and Unix permissions. Use Nextcloud when the VPS already runs Nextcloud or when account, sharing, and synchronization features belong in the same application. Never point Apache’s generic DAV provider at the Nextcloud data tree.

Prerequisites and a safe baseline
- A Linux VPS with sufficient storage and a public DNS name if clients will connect from the internet.
- Apache HTTP Server for the standalone design, or a working Nextcloud installation for the application design.
- A dedicated repository directory. Keep user content separate from executable application code and from Apache configuration files.
- A deliberate ownership plan: identify the service account, decide how administrators will inspect and back up files created by that account, and document the plan before granting write access.
- HTTPS before sending passwords or files across an untrusted network. Apache recommends Digest Authentication, or Basic Authentication carried inside TLS.
- A test client, such as
davfs2, a desktop file manager, a cURL-based script, or the official Nextcloud client where appropriate.
Apache’s warning is explicit: every location with DAV enabled should be protected by authentication, and WebDAV should not be enabled on an unsecured server. A public endpoint also needs account restrictions, storage monitoring, and a response to denial-of-service risks such as very large PROPFIND requests or disk exhaustion.
Set up a standalone Apache WebDAV repository
1. Install and enable the required modules
Use your distribution’s package manager to install Apache and the DAV modules. Enable mod_dav and its filesystem provider, mod_dav_fs, together with the authentication module and TLS module required by your policy. Module names and enablement commands differ between distributions, so confirm the resulting module list with the distribution’s Apache tooling rather than copying a command intended for another release.

Do not enable the DAV provider globally just to make one folder work. Keep the configuration change limited to the virtual host or URL location that will hold the repository.
2. Create a repository outside application code
Create a directory dedicated to DAV content, for example /srv/dav or another path on a filesystem with adequate capacity. A DAV repository is private to Apache’s file-management process. Editing its files directly as an unrelated Unix user can leave ownership, locking, or metadata in a state that surprises clients. Administrative scripts and backups should therefore run with an identity that has been deliberately granted access, not by casually changing files behind Apache’s back.

For multiple people, prefer a separate directory for each account (for example, one directory for Alice and another for Bob) or a carefully designed group layout. Do not use a single writable directory for users who are supposed to be isolated from one another.
3. Align Linux ownership with Apache’s runtime identity
Find the User and Group directives in the active Apache configuration. Common names vary by distribution; use the values actually configured on your VPS rather than assuming a particular account name. Grant that identity only the read, write, and directory-traverse permissions required for the DAV root and its descendants.

This is the key difference from a local shell upload: the authenticated WebDAV username is not automatically the Unix owner of the resulting file. Plan administrator access accordingly, using a controlled administrative group or filesystem access rules where necessary, while avoiding world-writable directories.
After changing ownership or modes, verify every parent directory in the path. Apache needs execute (traverse) permission on each parent, not merely read/write permission on the final directory. Keep the authentication file outside any served document root and readable only by the Apache process.

4. Enable DAV only for the intended URL
The following is a pattern, not a drop-in replacement for your distribution’s TLS and virtual-host settings. Replace the hostname, filesystem path, and authentication-file path with your own values:

</Directory>Dav On activates Apache’s default filesystem provider for that location. The authentication directives make every DAV operation require a valid account. Put this location in an HTTPS virtual host; do not expose Basic credentials over plain HTTP.
To give each person only one folder, map separate URL locations to separate filesystem directories and use account-specific authorization (for example, require Alice for Alice’s location and Bob for Bob’s). Test both the allowed path and a deliberately unauthorized path. URL names are not a security boundary by themselves; authentication and filesystem permissions must enforce the boundary.
5. Create and manage accounts safely
Create accounts with the authentication mechanism selected for the site. For a small repository, an Apache password file is simple to administer; Digest Authentication is another option documented by Apache. Use unique, long passwords, remove accounts that no longer need access, and do not share one credential among unrelated users. If the repository is publicly reachable, consider a separate virtual host and firewall policy so that only the required ports are exposed.

Keep DAV credentials distinct from Linux shell accounts. WebDAV users should not receive SSH access merely because they need file access, and an SSH administrator should not automatically be granted every DAV share.
6. Reload and perform an authenticated validation
Run the distribution’s Apache configuration test and inspect the enabled-module list before reloading or restarting Apache. Then test with a non-administrator account:
- Authenticate and issue a directory listing (a
PROPFINDrequest). - Upload a small test file and confirm that it appears in the repository.
- Rename it, download it, and delete it.
- Inspect the resulting Unix owner and group; they should match the planned Apache service identity.
- Attempt to access a different user’s location and a parent path; both should be denied.
- Repeat the test over the actual public hostname and certificate, not only through localhost.
Remove test files and retain the test account only if it has a documented purpose. Monitor free space and logs after deployment. DAV methods can create and delete data, so capacity alerts are part of the security design, not an optional add-on.
Use Nextcloud’s built-in WebDAV instead of Apache DAV
1. Leave Apache’s generic DAV provider disabled for Nextcloud
Nextcloud includes SabreDAV and serves WebDAV itself. Its administration guidance says that Apache’s mod_webdav is unnecessary for Nextcloud and must be disabled for the Nextcloud directory if enabled. Turning on generic Apache DAV there can conflict with Nextcloud routing and authentication or expose the wrong filesystem layer.

Enable the web-server modules Nextcloud actually requires, such as mod_rewrite; enable proxy modules as required when PHP-FPM is used. Enable the Nextcloud site and restart Apache according to the installation’s documented procedure. Keep the Nextcloud data directory governed by Nextcloud’s established application ownership and do not create a second, competing DAV mapping to it.
2. Use the correct endpoint and an application password
Third-party clients connect to:
https://cloud.example.com/remote.php/dav/files/USERNAME/If Nextcloud is installed below a URL subdirectory, include that directory in the endpoint. Replace USERNAME with the Nextcloud account name, preserving the path exactly as deployed.
Nextcloud recommends creating an application password in Personal settings → Security and using it for DAV clients instead of the main account password. An application password can be revoked independently if a laptop, script, or mount is lost, without changing the user’s primary login password. Treat the generated value like a password and store it only in a protected client credential file.
3. Remove parent-authentication conflicts
A server-level authentication rule must not intercept Nextcloud’s own Basic authentication for DAV services. If a parent directory or virtual host imposes an additional login challenge, adjust the Apache configuration so the Nextcloud DAV path can use Nextcloud authentication. Nextcloud’s Apache example uses Dav off in the Nextcloud directory and documents Satisfy Any when disabling a conflicting parent rule. Apply that pattern only when it matches your existing authorization design; do not weaken unrelated paths.
Mount Nextcloud WebDAV on Linux with per-user credentials
Nextcloud documents a Debian/Ubuntu flow using davfs2. The mount can be performed by the user rather than root when the group membership, mount point, and credentials file are configured correctly.
- Install the client:
apt-get install davfs2. - Add the Linux account to the DAV filesystem group:
usermod -aG davfs2 <username>. Start a new login session so the group membership is active. - Create a mount point and the per-user configuration directory:
mkdir ~/nextcloudmkdir ~/.davfs2 - Copy the system template and make it private:
cp /etc/davfs2/secrets ~/.davfs2/secretschown <linux_username>:<linux_username> ~/.davfs2/secretschmod 600 ~/.davfs2/secrets - Edit
~/.davfs2/secretsand add the exact WebDAV URL, the Nextcloud username, and its application password. Owner-only mode is important because this file contains reusable credentials. - Add an
/etc/fstabentry. A documented pattern is:https://example.com/nextcloud/remote.php/dav/files/USERNAME/ /home/<linux_username>/nextcloud davfs user,rw,auto 0 0 - Mount and verify the share:
mount ~/nextcloud. Create a small file, list it, and remove it to confirm write access. - Unmount when finished testing:
umount ~/nextcloud. Changeautotonoautowhen the share should be mounted manually instead of during the normal mount pass.
Do not put the primary Nextcloud password in a shell command or a world-readable file. If several Linux users mount different Nextcloud accounts, give each user a separate mount point and secrets file; never reuse one account’s application password for all of them.
Troubleshoot the failures that appear most often

Operational checks after deployment
- Authentication: every DAV location challenges unauthenticated requests and has no anonymous write path.
- Transport: clients use HTTPS, and certificates are renewed before expiry.
- Isolation: each account reaches only its assigned URL and directory; attempts to traverse elsewhere fail.
- Ownership: administrators know that Apache or the Nextcloud application owns newly created files and have a tested backup and restore procedure.
- Capacity: free-space monitoring and alerting are active, with limits or request controls considered for large listings and uploads.
- Credentials: WebDAV passwords and application passwords are stored in protected files, rotated when exposure is suspected, and revoked when a device is retired.
- Change control: Apache configuration tests pass before reloads, and changes are recorded so a module or authentication conflict can be reversed.
For a minimal repository, Apache gives you direct control over the URL, service account, and filesystem layout, but you must operate every security and permission layer yourself. For Nextcloud, the application owns account and sharing behavior, while Apache’s role is to route HTTPS traffic without enabling a second DAV implementation. Keeping those responsibilities separate is what prevents the most damaging permission and authentication mistakes.
