The fastest way to reduce toxic communication is to separate exposure control from moderation: mute or ignore disruptive players immediately, keep concise coordination through pings where the game supports them, and report abusive conduct separately. In Riot games, the exact controls depend on the title, platform, account type, region and rollout status. The instructions below are therefore League-focused, with clearly marked Riot account and VALORANT examples rather than claims about every MOBA.
For a League of Legends match, Riot’s documented approach is to use /mute or /ignore when a player’s messages become unproductive, then use Smart Ping for essential team signals. Parents of eligible under-18 Riot PC accounts in the United States can also restrict text and voice chat to off or friends-only through the Parent Portal. A report is a separate step: it sends evidence to the publisher for review but does not replace your personal mute control.
Choose the control that matches the problem
Before changing anything, identify three facts: which game you are playing, where you play it, and whether you need an individual match control or an account-level restriction. A console, mobile client or alternate game mode may expose different menus from the PC client. Account age, parental eligibility and regional rollout can also change what appears.

No source establishes a cross-MOBA statistic proving that disabling chat improves well-being or eliminates toxicity. Treat these settings as practical exposure and safety tools, not as a promise of a toxicity-free match.

Set immediate controls in League of Legends
Mute a player during the match
When a teammate or opponent starts flooding chat, insulting players or derailing strategy, use the in-game mute control rather than arguing. Riot’s League Instant Feedback guidance explicitly recommends the /mute function to stop viewing further negativity. Enter the command in the chat box with the player’s in-game name as required by the live client, or use the player’s scoreboard/chat control if that interface is available in your current patch.
Mute is an exposure decision. It helps you concentrate, but it does not create a moderation record. If the behavior violates the rules, make a separate report after you have protected your attention. Do not wait for a second or third insult to justify muting; the control is useful as soon as communication is distracting.
Use ignore when you want continued avoidance
Riot also documents /ignore for avoiding further negativity. Use it when you do not want to keep seeing a player’s messages and the ordinary match mute is not sufficient for your situation. Because command behavior and persistence can change with client updates, check the live command help or current League support guidance if the command does not behave as expected.
Keep coordination through Smart Ping
Smart Ping is Riot’s suggested alternative when you need team-relevant information without opening a hostile conversation. Use the available ping wheel for signals such as danger, missing enemy, assistance, retreat or an objective call. Pings are deliberately short; they work best for immediate positioning and timing, not for explaining a complicated draft or reviewing a mistake.
Agree on a few useful signals before the match starts: a danger ping for an incoming gank, an objective ping for timing, and an assistance or retreat ping when a fight is unsafe. This reduces the temptation to reopen text chat just to communicate a simple state change. Remember that pings can also be disruptive if spammed, so use the minimum number that conveys the information.
Do not retaliate in chat
Riot’s League guidance recommends constructive communication and warns that another player’s behavior does not justify abusive retaliation. If you answer an insult with an insult, your own messages can still be reviewed and penalized. The safer sequence is: mute or ignore, continue using useful pings, then report the conduct.

Can you turn off voice but keep pings?
Sometimes, but there is no documented universal MOBA switch that behaves identically everywhere. Text chat, team voice, party voice, pings, emotes and system announcements may be separate channels. In the game’s current audio or social menu, inspect each channel independently and confirm what an individual mute affects. A player who is muted in text may still be audible through team voice or a console party channel, while pings may remain visible.
Test the combination in a low-stakes match or practice environment before relying on it in ranked play. If the title offers only an all-chat toggle, you may have to choose between complete silence and retaining broader communication. Do not substitute a headset’s physical mute button for an account setting: it stops your microphone locally, but it does not necessarily stop incoming voice or hide text from other players.
Use the Riot Parent Portal for eligible United States accounts
Riot’s July 15, 2026 announcement describes optional parent-managed controls for League of Legends, VALORANT and Teamfight Tactics on PC in the United States. The feature is intended for eligible under-18 accounts. Riot said it was working toward availability in more countries, so do not treat this flow as a worldwide setting or assume that every Riot title is supported.
Parent Portal setup
- Sign in to the child’s Riot account page and begin the parent-connection process.
- Add the parent’s email address when prompted.
- Complete Riot’s parent-status verification.
- Open the account’s communication controls in the Parent Portal.
- Set text chat and voice chat to off or to friends-only, depending on the level of communication you want to permit.
- Have the child sign out and back in, or restart the affected PC game, if the client does not immediately reflect the new permission.
The announcement covers the account permission flow, not a universal in-match menu path. If the portal does not show the option, check the account’s age, country, supported title, PC requirement and current rollout before assuming that the setting is broken. A friends-only setting still allows communication with approved friends, so review the friends list as part of the family agreement.
What parents can see
Riot says the Parent Portal can show a child’s friends list and whom the child exchanges messages with. It does not provide chat history or gameplay activity in the portal. Some data requests require contacting support. Restricting communication and viewing account information are therefore separate capabilities.

Mute and ignore protect your screen; reporting gives the publisher information to evaluate. Riot’s reporting overview says reports can generally be filed in-game or after a match through match history, while warning that the exact steps differ between games.

League reports
After the match, use the report option attached to the relevant player and select the category that best describes the conduct. Include the behavior that matters—such as harassment, hateful language, intentional disruption or inappropriate communication—rather than a general statement that the player was unpleasant. Riot says reports supported by evidence can lead to penalties, but a report is not an instant decision or a guaranteed sanction.
Report the specific account involved and avoid turning the report box into another argument. If several players were abusive, describe each person’s conduct accurately rather than copying the same accusation for everyone. Keep in mind that a single unpleasant disagreement is not automatically the same as a rule violation; use the category that most closely matches what occurred.
VALORANT voice reports
Although VALORANT is a tactical shooter rather than a MOBA, it provides a useful Riot example for voice moderation. Riot’s current Playing with Respect guidance names Voice Comms Abuse as a report category. If you encounter abusive voice communications, use the in-game report flow and select that category when it matches the conduct. Use your personal mute control as well if you need the audio stopped immediately; submitting a report does not itself promise an instant mute for the reporter.
Riot reports that improvements to its Voice Evaluation system detected and penalized twice as many instances of voice-comms abuse over the preceding year, and that Patch 13.06 improved detection for Spanish, Portuguese and Korean. Those are Riot-reported VALORANT results, not proof that harassment has been eliminated or that the same detection applies to every MOBA.
Do not rely on an unconfirmed League team-voice setting
Riot’s March 13, 2026 League developer update said team voice was being explored again and would require testing and iteration. Riot wrote, We didn’t pursue team voice chat earlier because it couldn’t meet our standards for safety and reliability.
The same update said, We don’t have exact timelines right now because doing this the right way will take a lot of work and we aren’t yet ready to share concrete details, but you can expect to hear more on Team Voice later this year in a future Dev Update.
That post did not provide a public release date or a menu path. It also does not establish the feature’s status on October 17, 2026. Before telling players to enable League team voice, check a newer official Riot update or the live client. Do not invent a voice-toggle path based on another game’s menus.

Adapt the method to another MOBA without guessing
The same decision framework works outside Riot games, but the labels and scope must be verified in that game’s current client.
- Open the game’s current audio, social or communication settings and identify whether text, voice, party chat, pings and emotes are separate channels.
- During a match, look for the player list, scoreboard or chat control for an individual mute. Confirm whether it applies to text, voice or both.
- Check whether the game offers an ignore, block or friends-only option and whether it persists between matches.
- Locate the report command in the match interface and the post-match history screen. Record the category that specifically covers voice or text abuse.
- Read the game’s support page for platform and region exceptions before applying a PC instruction to a console or mobile account.
The available evidence here does not establish exact Dota 2 steps or a universal toggle for every MOBA. If a title does not document a setting, use its live help and avoid assuming that a League command, ping wheel or parent flow will work there.
Costs, hardware and account requirements
These controls do not require a headset, microphone, hardware mute switch, game purchase or paid guide. They are implemented through the game client, account permissions and publisher reporting tools. A headset can make it easier to hear useful calls, but buying one does not enable a game-level restriction. Likewise, muting your own microphone does not stop incoming abuse or hide text.
The practical requirements are a supported game build, access to the relevant account and, for parent controls, the eligibility conditions Riot lists: an under-18 account, a verified parent connection, a United States region and a supported PC title. Regional rules, account migrations and feature rollouts can change those conditions. Recheck them after a major patch or when playing while traveling.
Diagnose common setup problems
The mute command does nothing
- Check the spelling and required player-name format in the live League client.
- Try the scoreboard or player context menu if the current interface exposes one.
- Confirm whether you muted text only while the unwanted sound is coming from voice or party chat.
- Restart the client after an update if the interface appears out of sync, then verify the result in a non-competitive setting.
- Check whether you are seeing system messages, pings or emotes rather than the player channel you intended to mute.
The Parent Portal option is missing
- Confirm that the account is an eligible under-18 account and that the parent verification step completed.
- Check that you are using a supported Riot PC title and a United States account covered by the July 15, 2026 announcement.
- Look for a regional rollout notice; Riot described expansion to more countries as ongoing.
- Contact Riot support if the account meets those conditions but the control still does not appear.
A report produces no immediate feedback
That is expected. Reporting sends information for evaluation; it is not the same as muting. Keep using the personal mute or ignore control while the publisher reviews the case. Avoid filing duplicate reports for the same incident or adding retaliatory messages that create a second conduct problem.

Riot’s League text-evaluation article says its newer system is expected to process over 20 times more penalties. This is an expectation about system throughput stated by Riot, not an independently verified outcome. It should not be read as a promise that a particular report will be actioned.

Voice and text moderation can also involve regional data rules. Riot lists VALORANT communication-restriction durations of 1, 3, 7, 14 or 365 days, with possible regional differences. Audio or transcript retention rules vary by region, so consult the game’s current privacy and support documentation if data retention—not just exposure reduction—is your concern.
Personal controls remain useful even when automated moderation improves. A detector can miss context, a report can take time to review, and a penalty does not remove the messages you have already seen. Muting first is the reliable way to regain concentration; reporting is the way to provide evidence for a broader response.
A practical low-toxicity routine
- At the first hostile exchange, mute the individual instead of debating.
- Use Smart Ping or the game’s equivalent for objective, position and danger information.
- If the conduct crosses the game’s rules, submit a focused report in-game or from match history.
- Do not answer abuse with abuse; your own messages remain subject to review.
- For an eligible United States Riot PC child account, have the parent use the Parent Portal to choose off or friends-only text and voice permissions.
- Recheck settings after major patches, platform changes or travel to another region, because communication controls and eligibility can change.
