Virtualmin can turn one fresh Linux VPS or dedicated server into a shared-style hosting platform: each customer receives an isolated Virtual Server with its own files, domains, databases, mail settings, quotas, and permissions. The reliable path is to start with a clean, supported operating system, assign a unique hostname such as host.example.com, choose Apache/LAMP or Nginx/LEMP before installation, run Virtualmin’s automated installer, complete the first-run wizard, validate the configuration, and then create one Virtual Server per hosted domain.
Plan the service model before you install. A full installation includes local mail, spam and virus filtering, DNS, FTP, and related services, but Virtualmin says it needs about 4 GiB of RAM or more to run well. A minimal installation can work with around 1 GiB of RAM, omits several local services, and is better suited to a web-focused server that uses external DNS or mail.
What a shared-style Virtualmin server looks like
Virtualmin is an administration layer for hosting multiple independent websites on one Linux system. Instead of handing every customer the server’s root account, you create Virtual Servers and assign an owner, password, storage quota, allowed features, runtime settings, databases, mailboxes, and backup rights to that account.
Use a separate Virtual Server for each unrelated top-level domain. A company site at example.com and a separate customer site at another-example.net should not share an owner or document root. For domains that are genuinely related, use a sub-server or an alias instead of creating unrelated accounts. This gives you the practical equivalent of common shared-hosting structures while preserving clearer ownership and quota boundaries.

Virtualmin’s terms are different from cPanel’s. A cPanel domain generally maps to a Virtual Server; an add-on domain is roughly comparable to a sub-server; and a parked domain is similar to an alias. The mapping is not exact, so design the ownership and permissions you actually need rather than copying a previous panel’s layout blindly.
Requirements to settle before installation
Start with a clean supported server
Provision a new, supported Linux VPS or dedicated server. Do not pre-install a web server, mail stack, control panel, database packages, or unrelated repositories before running the installer. Virtualmin’s automated installation is intended to configure the complete hosting bundle; extra packages and altered defaults can create conflicts that are difficult to diagnose.
Give the machine a unique fully qualified hostname, for example host.example.com. The hostname must not be one of the customer domains you plan to host. It identifies the server for administration, mail services, certificates, and system-generated messages.
Size memory and disk for the service you will run
Virtualmin’s 2026 guidance lists at least 1 GiB of RAM for a minimal installation and about 4 GiB or more for a full installation with mail, spam filtering, and antivirus. Those are installation guidance figures, not a capacity guarantee for a particular number of sites. Applications, traffic, PHP workers, databases, mailboxes, logs, and backups all consume additional resources.
The same guidance calls for at least 1 GiB of free disk space before installation, plus the storage required by websites, databases, mail, logs, and backup staging. A server that technically meets the minimum can still fill quickly when customers upload media or retain large mailboxes.

Make the five architecture decisions first
Apache/LAMP or Nginx/LEMP
Choose the web stack during installation. Apache/LAMP is the familiar choice for applications that depend on Apache directives, per-directory rewrite rules, or established Apache administration practices. Nginx/LEMP is appropriate when your applications and proxy design are already tested with Nginx and PHP-FPM or another upstream runtime.
Virtualmin states that the bundle cannot be switched after installation without significant manual work. Treat this as an architectural decision, not a setting to experiment with later. Inventory the rewrite rules, proxy requirements, PHP versions, application documentation, and team experience for the software you intend to host.

Full or mini installation
Select full when the server must receive mail, filter spam and viruses, answer DNS queries, provide FTP, and supply the traditional integrated hosting feature set. Select mini when those services will be handled elsewhere or when memory is constrained. A mini installation is not a faster full installation; the omitted components are deliberate dependencies on external services.
Local DNS or hosted DNS
With local DNS, the server runs its own DNS service and you delegate the domains to its nameservers. This gives you direct control over records but adds DNS availability, delegation, and troubleshooting responsibilities. With cloud or registrar DNS, the provider answers queries while Virtualmin remains responsible for the hosting configuration. Hosted DNS is often simpler for a web-only mini server, but you must maintain all required web and mail records in that provider’s interface.

Separate Virtual Servers or subordinate accounts
Use separate Virtual Servers when domains have different owners, quotas, billing plans, or security boundaries. Use sub-servers for subordinate sites that should remain under one owner and share the parent relationship. Use aliases when another domain should resolve to the same site rather than receive an independent account.
Decide how mail and databases will be operated
Web hosting and mail hosting are separate operational commitments. If you host mail locally, plan MX records, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, mailbox storage, spam and virus filtering, queue monitoring, and outbound reputation. If mail is external, remove local-mail expectations from the customer plan and publish the provider’s records in DNS.
Enable only the database engines and versions your applications require. Every enabled service consumes memory and increases the set of packages, ports, credentials, and updates that must be maintained.
Step-by-step: install Virtualmin and create the first sites
1. Provision and identify the server
- Create the fresh supported VPS or dedicated server and record its public IPv4 and, if used, IPv6 addresses.
- Set a unique hostname such as
host.example.com. Do not reuse a customer’s domain as the machine hostname. - Confirm that you can reach the server over SSH with an administrative account capable of running the installer as root.
2. Publish the prerequisite DNS records
Create an A record for the hostname pointing to the server’s IPv4 address and an AAAA record if you will serve IPv6. If your DNS provider requires nameserver glue, create it before delegating domains. Add records for the first hosted domain as well, or be ready to add them immediately after installation. A hostname that does not resolve publicly can prevent automatic certificate issuance and makes panel access less trustworthy.
3. Select the stack and installation size
Use Virtualmin’s automated installer whenever possible. During the installer’s choices, select LAMP for Apache or LEMP for Nginx, then choose the full installation or the mini variant. The automated documentation specifically recommends this method because it configures the components required for virtual hosting and reduces manual mistakes.

For a mini installation, use the installer’s --type mini option. For a full installation, use the normal full-stack mode. Review the current installer syntax in Virtualmin’s automated installation documentation before executing it, because package and operating-system support can change.
4. Run the official installer over SSH
From an SSH session, download and execute the current virtualmin-install.sh script exactly as directed by Virtualmin. Run it with root privileges and read the prompts before accepting the selected stack and service set. The script configures repositories, packages, services, and virtual-hosting defaults. Do not interrupt it while packages are being installed or services are being configured.
When the hostname resolves correctly and the required ports are reachable, the installer can request a TLS certificate for that hostname. If certificate issuance is not ready, complete the installation and correct DNS or firewall reachability before replacing temporary access with the hostname certificate.
5. Sign in to the panel securely
Open https://your-hostname:10000, replacing the example with the hostname you configured. Port 10000 is Virtualmin’s normal administration interface. If DNS or certificate issuance is temporarily unavailable, use the server IP address to reach the panel, then repair DNS and install or renew the hostname certificate before normal administration.

6. Complete the first-run wizard
Finish the post-install wizard before creating production accounts. Review the memory, database, mail, DNS, and virus-filter choices so they match the full or mini design you selected. Avoid enabling services you deliberately planned to run elsewhere.
On the List Virtual Servers page, run Check Configuration. Resolve hostname, DNS, service, repository, and package warnings before adding customer domains. A warning that is harmless on a test server can become a failed certificate request, undeliverable mail, or a broken virtual host in production.

7. Create the first Virtual Server
- Choose Create Virtual Server and enter the first top-level domain.
- Assign the owner and a strong owner password. Use a separate owner for an unrelated customer or business.
- Set the disk quota, enabled features, PHP or other runtime choices, database permissions, mailbox limits, and backup permissions that match the plan you will offer.
- Save the server, then verify its document root, DNS records, web service status, and owner access before publishing the site.
Repeat the process for each unrelated top-level domain. Add sub-servers only when the subordinate site belongs to the same owner and relationship. Add aliases when another hostname should serve the existing site rather than receive an independent quota and account.
8. Configure DNS and issue certificates
Point each hosted domain’s web records to the server. If DNS is external, make the changes in that provider’s control panel; if DNS is local, create or update the zone in Virtualmin and ensure delegation is correct. Wait until the records resolve from outside your network.
Request a certificate for each domain after DNS points to the server and the validation path is reachable. Include the names customers will actually use, such as the bare domain and its chosen www hostname. Renew certificates through the supported Virtualmin workflow and monitor failures rather than assuming renewal is automatic.
9. Configure mail deliberately
For local mail, publish MX records that point to the mail host and configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for the sending domains. Set mailbox quotas and monitor disk usage, delivery queues, authentication failures, and spam or virus-filter operation. A full installation supplies the local components; a mini installation omits them, so use an external mail service instead and publish its records.

10. Enable only required databases
Create databases and database users inside the appropriate Virtual Server. Grant each application its own credentials and minimum required privileges. Keep database versions aligned with the applications you host and include database dumps in the backup plan.
11. Apply quotas and security boundaries
Use per-owner quotas and feature permissions to preserve shared-hosting separation. Limit who can create databases, mailboxes, sub-servers, scheduled tasks, or DNS records. Keep administrative access restricted, apply operating-system and Virtualmin updates through supported package mechanisms, and monitor disk, memory, service logs, and mail queues.

Backup design and recovery testing
Schedule Virtualmin backups for every Virtual Server. Depending on the service you need to recover, include home directories, databases, DNS records, and web-server directives. A website-only archive will not recreate a database or mail configuration.

Keep multiple generations on storage separate from the production host. Document where credentials, encryption keys, and restore instructions are held. Perform a restore test before you need one. Virtualmin can restore backups and recreate Virtual Servers on another system, but owner-level restores are intentionally restricted to reduce configuration and security risk.
Apache versus Nginx: a practical choice

There is no universally correct stack. The correct choice is the one supported by the applications, deployment procedures, and administrators who will maintain the server.
Common failures and how to correct them
The installer stops or reports package conflicts
- Confirm the server is genuinely fresh and supported.
- Remove or rebuild a machine that already has another control panel, web server, mail stack, or third-party repository.
- Check that the selected operating-system repositories are reachable and that the server has enough free disk space.
The panel opens only by IP or shows an untrusted certificate
- Verify the hostname A or AAAA record resolves to this server from an external resolver.
- Check that the firewall and provider security group allow the administration port.
- Use the IP only as a temporary recovery path; repair DNS and request the hostname certificate before routine use.
A domain displays the wrong site
- Check that the domain’s DNS records point to the correct server.
- Confirm that the domain is assigned to the intended Virtual Server and that its document root contains the expected files.
- Check for duplicate aliases, stale DNS, or a proxy that still points to an old host.
HTTPS validation fails
- Make sure the domain resolves publicly before requesting the certificate.
- Confirm that the validation path is not blocked by a firewall, proxy, or application redirect.
- Correct the DNS or reachability issue, then request the certificate again.
Mail is not delivered
- Verify MX records and the destination hostname.
- Check SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records for syntax and alignment.
- Inspect the mail queue, mailbox quota, filtering logs, and outbound reputation.
- If the server is a mini installation, confirm that you are not expecting local mail components that were intentionally omitted.
The server runs out of memory or disk
- Identify whether websites, databases, mail, logs, or backup archives are consuming the resource.
- Reduce enabled services, tighten quotas, move backups off-server, or resize the VPS.
- Do not treat the 1 GiB and 4 GiB figures as workload limits; they are installation baselines for different service sets.
Operating the server as your customer base grows
Keep a written service matrix for every plan: storage quota, databases, mailboxes, DNS responsibility, runtime versions, backup retention, and who may create sub-servers. This prevents a customer owner from receiving capabilities that were not intended for the plan.
Monitor memory, disk, inode usage, web and database logs, certificate expiry, DNS resolution, and mail queues. Review the Check Configuration results after major package or hostname changes. Apply updates through supported channels and schedule maintenance rather than making ad hoc package changes on a production host.
Separate customer data from backup data, retain more than one backup generation, and rehearse a restore to a second system. A shared-style platform is only dependable when you can recreate an account after a failed disk, compromised host, or configuration mistake.
