To create a live poll on YouTube, open the stream’s Live Chat and choose Create a poll on a computer. In the YouTube mobile app, open chat, tap Add, then Create a poll. Enter two to four answer choices, publish the poll, and close it with End poll when you want to display the result. YouTube also provides a separate mobile-only Poll sticker for placing a poll directly over the video.
This guide explains how to add a poll to a YouTube live stream, how chat polls differ from the mobile sticker, the limits viewers encounter, and what to check when the poll controls are missing.
What YouTube live polls do
A YouTube live poll is an interactive question shown to viewers while a live stream or Premiere is running. The standard poll appears inside Live Chat, so viewers answer without leaving the stream. You can use it during an active broadcast or Premiere, and YouTube lets you keep it open for as long as 24 hours. A poll must contain at least two and no more than four choices. Once a viewer submits a vote, that viewer cannot change the selection.
Polls are live-only interactions. YouTube does not include them in the stream’s Live Chat replay, so someone watching the recording later will not see the poll card or be able to vote through the replay. These rules are summarized in YouTube’s Live Chat help.

Choose the right poll format

The first two options are chat polls. The sticker is a separate mobile presentation: you can change its text, color, size, and position. A poll made in YouTube Studio on a desktop or through an encoder does not turn into a mobile Poll sticker. If the poll must appear over the video itself, create it through the mobile sticker flow described below.
Create a poll on a computer
Use this method when you are managing the broadcast from a desktop browser, YouTube Studio, or a computer-based control room.
- Open the correct stream. Go to the chat window for the scheduled or active live stream, or for the Premiere you are managing. Polls are available while a live stream or Premiere is running. If the broadcast is only scheduled and the poll control is not visible yet, wait until the live chat controls become available.
- Find the poll control. At the bottom of the Live Chat window, click Create a poll. The control is part of the chat composer, not the video settings panel. YouTube documents this placement in its computer Live Chat instructions.
- Write the question and choices. Enter the question viewers should answer and add two, three, or four options. Check the wording before publishing because viewers cannot revise a submitted vote.
- Publish the poll. Select the command to publish it. The poll then appears in Live Chat for viewers who are watching the live stream or Premiere.
- Watch the response window. Leave the poll open while you need responses. YouTube permits a maximum duration of 24 hours; you do not have to wait that long if the decision is already clear.
- Close it and reveal the result. Click End poll in the banner at the top of Live Chat. Ending the poll closes voting and shows the results in chat.
If you cannot find Create a poll
- Confirm that you opened the stream’s Live Chat rather than a general comments panel or the video description.
- Check that the stream or Premiere is live. Polls are a live interaction and are not a standard video-post feature.
- Verify that the stream is not configured as made for kids; YouTube says Live Chat is on by default except for streams whose audience is set as made for kids.
- Refresh the chat window or reopen the stream’s control page if the chat controls loaded incompletely.
Create a chat poll in the YouTube mobile app
The mobile app uses the same chat-poll concept but places the command inside the chat’s add menu.

Use the YouTube mobile app and open the stream you are managing. The mobile chat controls appear at the bottom of the chat window.
- Open the add menu. Tap Add in the chat controls.
- Select the poll command. Tap Create a poll.
- Enter the poll. Type the question and provide two to four answer options. Review the choices carefully because a viewer cannot change a vote after submitting it.
- Publish it. Use the publish control to place the poll in Live Chat.
- End it when ready. Tap End poll in the banner shown at the top of chat. The closed poll displays its results in the chat.
The documented iPhone and iPad path is Add > Create a poll; see YouTube’s iPhone and iPad Live Chat instructions. Android and iOS labels can differ slightly as the app interface changes, but the relevant control is the chat’s Add menu followed by Create a poll.

Put a poll over the video with the mobile Poll sticker
Use the sticker when the poll should be visible as an on-screen element rather than only as a chat card. This is a separate mobile-app feature, not an alternate display mode for a desktop chat poll.
- Open the live stream controls in the YouTube mobile app.
- Choose the option for adding a live Poll sticker.
- Enter the sticker’s poll text and configure its appearance. You can customize the text, color, size, and position.
- Drag the sticker to the desired location on the video. Keep important presentation elements and captions clear of the overlay.
- To finish the sticker poll, drag the sticker to the trash. That action ends the sticker poll.
A poll created in desktop YouTube Studio or through a streaming encoder remains a chat poll; it does not become a sticker. If you require the overlay presentation, use the mobile sticker workflow itself. The distinction and sticker controls are described in YouTube’s mobile Live Chat guidance.
Poll limits viewers and hosts should plan around
Two to four choices
Every poll needs a minimum of two options and a maximum of four. A yes/no question uses the minimum. If a question naturally has more possible answers, combine related answers or run separate polls rather than trying to add a fifth option.

After a viewer submits a vote, YouTube does not provide a change-vote command. State the choices clearly and avoid ambiguous wording before publishing. If the question changes, end the poll and publish a new one instead of asking viewers to edit their original response.

Twenty-four-hour maximum
A poll can remain open for up to 24 hours. You can end it earlier with the banner command in chat, or by removing the sticker through the trash control. A long-running poll does not need to remain open after the decision has been made.
No result in chat replay
Live polls are not included in Live Chat replay. Viewers who watch the archived stream later will not see the original poll card or its voting interaction. If the outcome matters to replay viewers, state the result verbally during the stream or include it in another part of the recorded presentation.
Live Chat and mobile-stream eligibility checks
Live Chat must be available
YouTube says Live Chat is enabled by default, except when a stream’s audience is set as made for kids. A missing chat panel therefore prevents the standard chat-poll workflow. Review the audience setting and the stream’s chat configuration before troubleshooting the poll command itself. The general rules are in YouTube’s Learn about Live Chat page.

Creating a poll in the mobile app presumes that your channel can start a mobile live stream. YouTube lists these requirements:
- At least 50 subscribers.
- No live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days.
- A verified channel.
- Live streaming turned on for the channel.
- A supported mobile device.
YouTube says a first mobile live stream can take up to 24 hours to become available after you enable the feature. If the mobile broadcast option itself is missing, complete these checks and allow that activation period before treating the absence as a poll problem. See YouTube’s mobile live-stream requirements.

Troubleshoot common poll problems
The Create a poll button is missing on desktop
Open the stream’s actual Live Chat window and look at its bottom controls. Confirm that the event is a live stream or Premiere with chat available, rather than a normal uploaded video. If the audience is marked made for kids, Live Chat is not available by default, so the poll command will not appear there. Reloading the stream page can also restore controls that failed to load.
The Add menu does not show Create a poll on mobile
Make sure you are using the YouTube app’s live chat controls, not a browser page or a regular comment field. Open the active stream first, tap Add at the bottom of chat, and look for Create a poll. If you cannot start the mobile broadcast at all, check the subscriber, verification, restriction, device, and activation requirements listed above.

I need to stop voting but cannot see the result
For a chat poll, use End poll in the banner at the top of chat. Closing it is what ends voting and displays the result in the chat. For a Poll sticker, drag the sticker to the trash; the sticker uses a different close action.
A viewer wants to change an answer
YouTube does not allow a submitted vote to be changed. The practical correction is to end the current poll and create a replacement with the corrected wording or choices. Tell viewers which poll is authoritative so they do not continue using the closed one.
The poll is missing from the replay
This is expected behavior, not a failed export. YouTube’s poll rules make live polls visible during the broadcast but exclude them from Live Chat replay. Preserve the outcome in the recording by saying it aloud or presenting it elsewhere while the stream is live.

A desktop poll does not appear as a sticker
Chat polls and stickers are separate features. Desktop Studio and encoder polls are designed for Live Chat and do not become on-screen mobile stickers. Create the poll through the YouTube mobile app’s sticker controls when an overlay is required.
Plan a poll that works during a live broadcast
Decide where the answer should be visible
Choose a chat poll when you want responses grouped with the conversation and managed from a computer or the mobile chat menu. Choose the mobile sticker when the question must remain visible over the video and viewers need to see it without relying on the chat panel. The sticker requires the mobile workflow; desktop creation cannot substitute for it.
Keep the question answerable in one selection
Because each viewer submits one irreversible vote, phrase the question so that every option represents a distinct choice. Limit the list to the allowed two-to-four options and avoid combining alternatives that would make the result difficult to interpret.
Set the closing point before you publish
Decide whether you will close the poll after a discussion segment, at a decision point, or before the broadcast ends. On desktop and mobile chat, close it with the banner’s End poll command. For the sticker, plan to remove it by dragging it to the trash. A clear closing point prevents the poll from collecting responses after the conversation has moved on.

Quick pre-publish checklist
- The stream is live or is a Premiere with Live Chat available.
- The audience setting does not disable Live Chat by marking the stream made for kids.
- The question has two, three, or four choices.
- The wording is final because submitted votes cannot be changed.
- You have chosen chat placement or the mobile sticker presentation intentionally.
- You know how you will close the poll: End poll for chat, or drag the sticker to the trash.
- If using mobile streaming, the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements and activation is complete.
With those checks complete, open the relevant chat controls, publish the poll, and close it when the response window ends. The key distinction is simple: desktop and mobile chat controls create chat polls, while the YouTube mobile app’s sticker controls create the on-screen version.
