A viewer-controlled cursor is a two-part system: an input service accepts a viewer’s pointer actions, and a graphics overlay draws the resulting pointer in the stream. OBS can display the cursor through a Browser Source, but OBS, Twitch, and the adjacent viewer-interaction tools documented here do not provide a ready-to-install shared-cursor product. You need a constrained custom input surface or a service that you have verified, plus moderation, rate limits, and a private test stream.
What a viewer-controlled cursor actually requires
“Let chat move the cursor” sounds like one feature, but it combines two separate jobs:
- Input: a viewer-facing page, extension, or command system receives a position or movement request and decides which viewer is allowed to act.
- Rendering: a browser overlay sends the accepted position to the broadcast so viewers can see it over a defined game or desktop region.
An overlay alone only displays graphics. It does not grant an audience access to the streamer’s mouse, keyboard, OBS controls, or computer. Conversely, an input endpoint without a stream overlay may receive events that nobody can see.

Treat the cursor as a game-like interaction, not as remote administration.

What existing tools establish—and what they do not
The available documentation supports the display and automation pieces, but not a turnkey shared cursor. Use the following distinctions when choosing an approach.

CastMate’s OBS forum listing describes viewer-triggered automations, including scene changes, overlay influence, and simulated input. That makes it an adjacent automation component, not proof of continuous shared-cursor support. A report about Sony patent US 12,752,199 describes adaptive pointers and reactions during gameplay; a patent describes claimed technology, not a released consumer feature or an available setup.
Choose the interaction model before building
Decide what the audience is controlling and how many people can act at once. This choice determines your backend, moderation burden, and tolerance for stream delay.
One active controller
Assign a single viewer a short turn. The server accepts that viewer’s movement while everyone else sees the pointer but cannot move it. Turn ownership can expire automatically, which prevents an abandoned browser tab from holding control indefinitely.
Queued turn-taking
Viewers join a queue, receive a fixed time or number of moves, and are removed when their turn ends. This is easier to moderate than a free-for-all and makes attribution clear on stream.
Vote or command-based movement
Instead of transmitting every pointer coordinate, viewers submit directions, destinations, or votes. The server applies the winning or approved command. This model tolerates long latency better than continuous steering.
Crowd movement with arbitration
Several viewers may submit positions, but the server combines them or selects one according to a rule such as majority vote, nearest-to-target, or moderator approval. Do not let the browser decide the winner; the server must be authoritative.

Reference architecture for a safe setup
A practical implementation has four layers:
- Viewer client: a web page or platform extension displays the allowed control area and sends pointer events or commands.
- Input service: authenticates or identifies the participant, assigns control, applies bounds and rate limits, and emits an approved cursor state.
- Streamer bridge: a trusted local process can receive the approved state and, if necessary, perform one narrowly scoped action. It must not expose OBS administration to viewers.
- Broadcast overlay: an HTML page rendered by OBS displays the cursor at the current coordinates.
Keep the viewer endpoint and OBS administration on separate interfaces. If the system needs to change a scene or source, the local bridge should perform only the preselected action. Never send OBS WebSocket credentials to a browser or accept arbitrary scene, source, or computer commands from chat.
OBS specifically recommends password protection for its WebSocket interface: “It is highly recommended to keep the WebSocket protected with a password against unauthorized control.” Follow that guidance even on a private network; a browser extension, chat bot, or compromised local process should not become an unrestricted OBS controller.
Step-by-step: build the input side
1. Define the control rectangle
Choose a fixed coordinate space such as a 1,920 × 1,080 canvas or the exact pixel dimensions of a game window. Mark the permitted rectangle within that space. If the stream shows a game at 1,280 × 720 inside a larger scene, use the game’s coordinates and map them to the overlay’s position rather than allowing arbitrary screen coordinates.
- Set minimum and maximum X and Y values.
- Reject values outside those limits on the server, even if the client hides them.
- Decide whether the pointer may enter menus, chat, or other sensitive areas.
- Define a reset position that the streamer can invoke immediately.
2. Identify the active participant
Use a platform identity, a short-lived login, or a server-issued session token. Display the current controller’s name or anonymized identifier to the streamer. Do not rely solely on a username supplied in a request body; a client can change that value.

Represent control as a lease with an owner, start time, and expiry time. A disconnect, inactivity timeout, moderator command, or scene change should release the lease. If you use a queue, record enqueue time and remove entries that no longer have a live session.
4. Enforce rate and movement limits
Continuous pointer events can arrive far faster than the stream can display them. The server should sample or coalesce events, cap updates per second, and limit the maximum distance a pointer can move in one update. These controls reduce bandwidth, make motion readable, and limit abuse.
5. Send only approved state to the overlay
The overlay needs the current position and presentation state, not credentials or an arbitrary command channel. A minimal message might contain a normalized position, visibility, and sequence number:

6. Provide moderator controls
At minimum, provide pause, resume, reset-to-center, revoke-current-controller, clear-queue, and hide-cursor actions. Put these controls on a private moderator page or a local control panel, not in the same public page used by viewers.
Step-by-step: render the cursor in OBS
1. Create the overlay page
The overlay should have a transparent background, a pointer graphic, and a connection to the approved-state stream. Render the pointer in a coordinate system that matches the intended scene region. Include a connection status that is visible to the streamer during testing but can be hidden from viewers.
2. Add a Browser Source
- In OBS, select the scene that contains the game or desktop region.
- Add a Browser source and enter the overlay page URL.
- Set the Browser Source width and height to the overlay canvas dimensions.
- Position and crop the source so its pointer coordinates align with the intended gameplay region.
- Place the source above the game capture in the Sources list.
Crowd Control’s official setup guide demonstrates the general pattern of copying an overlay URL into a Browser Source and matching overlay resolution and size to the gameplay area. That is useful display guidance; it does not establish that the service supplies a shared cursor.
3. Keep scene geometry consistent
If one scene uses a letterboxed game and another uses a full-canvas capture, do not reuse the same coordinate mapping without checking it. Store a mapping for each scene or keep the cursor layer inside a nested scene whose dimensions never change. Test after every scene switch, source resize, crop, or transition.

A Browser Source in OBS appears in the program output and therefore in recordings and clips unless you hide it or use a separate scene. If you need a clean recording, create a scene variant without the cursor rather than exposing a control that can accidentally hide the live pointer.
Using a Twitch extension as the control surface
A Twitch video-overlay extension runs in the viewer’s player space, which can make controls convenient, but it is not the same thing as an OBS overlay. Keep buttons and pointer indicators away from player controls and other important video content. Test normal, theater, and full-screen layouts because the available player area and layering behavior differ.

The extension should send requests to your input service; it should not connect directly to OBS WebSocket. If the extension is unavailable, viewers should still be able to watch the stream, and the streamer should retain a private pause/reset control.
Latency: design for the stream people actually see
YouTube describes low latency as suitable for limited interaction and says that most viewers of a low-latency stream will experience latency of less than 10 seconds. That is useful for deliberate pointing or short commands, but it can feel extremely slow for continuous steering: a viewer may be looking at a cursor position that is several seconds behind the server’s current state.
Design around that delay rather than promising mouse-like responsiveness:
- Show a viewer’s local “pending” target separately from the authoritative stream cursor.
- Use turns, destinations, or short movement bursts instead of unrestricted dragging.
- Display whose turn is active and when it expires.
- Ignore stale commands using timestamps or sequence numbers.
- Let the streamer pause input before changing scenes or entering a sensitive menu.
Measure the complete path—viewer action, server acceptance, overlay update, encoder, platform delivery, and viewer playback—rather than measuring only your local WebSocket connection.
Security and moderation checklist
- Separate privileges: viewer sessions may submit bounded pointer input; only the streamer or a trusted local bridge may control OBS.
- Password-protect OBS WebSocket: never publish its endpoint or credentials.
- Validate on the server: enforce coordinate bounds, message size, event frequency, and allowed commands.
- Use an allowlist: accept only the fields and actions required for the cursor.
- Expire sessions: revoke control on disconnect, inactivity, scene changes, or moderator action.
- Log decisions: record who received control, when an update was rejected, and which moderator reset the pointer.
- Protect the host: do not expose keyboard shortcuts, shell commands, file paths, or arbitrary URL navigation.
- Plan abuse handling: rate-limit accounts, mute or ban abusive sessions, and provide a global pause.
- Fail closed: if the input service or bridge loses its connection, freeze or hide the cursor instead of accepting unaudited local input.
Private-stream test plan
Use a private or unlisted stream before enabling the feature publicly. The following checks are implementation safeguards, not results of an independent test:
- Move the pointer to every edge and confirm that it cannot leave the configured rectangle.
- Open two viewer sessions and verify that only the active participant can move the cursor.
- Close the active browser tab and confirm that control expires or passes to the next queued viewer.
- Send bursts of events and verify that rate limiting keeps the overlay responsive.
- Use the moderator pause and reset controls while events are arriving.
- Switch scenes, resize the game capture, and test normal, theater, and full-screen viewing where applicable.
- Disconnect the overlay from the input service and confirm that no OBS administration becomes available.
- Check the program output and recording separately so the pointer appears exactly where intended.
Troubleshooting common failures
The cursor appears in OBS but viewers cannot move it
That is normally an input-path problem, not a Browser Source problem. Check that the viewer page is connected to the input service, that a participant has an active lease, and that the server is broadcasting approved state. An overlay URL by itself does not create viewer control.
The pointer is offset from the game
Compare the Browser Source dimensions, scene scale, crop, letterboxing, and the control rectangle. Use normalized coordinates or a per-scene mapping, then test the four corners rather than correcting only the center.

The cursor jumps or looks choppy
Coalesce high-frequency events, cap the update rate, and interpolate only between trusted server states. Do not let the client render an unbounded stream of local positions that disagree with the authoritative overlay.
Several viewers appear to control it simultaneously
Inspect lease enforcement and session identity. The server should reject updates from anyone who is not the current owner, and the overlay should ignore stale sequence numbers. A queue should advance only after explicit expiry or moderator release.
OBS or scenes can be controlled unexpectedly
Stop the public endpoint, rotate OBS WebSocket credentials, and inspect every bridge action. Reconfigure the bridge so that it accepts only the pointer state or a fixed allowlist of operations. Never expose an unrestricted OBS endpoint to viewers.

The experience feels several seconds behind
That may be normal for platform delivery. YouTube documents under-10-second latency for most viewers of a low-latency stream, not instant response. Change the interaction to turn-taking, target selection, or short commands, and show viewers when their input has been accepted.
How to choose an approach

Do not select an adjacent viewer-interaction product solely because it mentions overlays, simulated input, or game integrations. The documented interaction model may be event-triggered rather than continuous pointer control. Verify current capabilities, platform support, and security behavior before connecting anything to a live production computer.
Bottom line
A reliable audience-controlled pointer is not a single OBS setting. Build a bounded input surface, arbitrate ownership on a server, render the approved state in a Browser Source, and keep OBS administration private behind a password-protected, narrowly scoped bridge. Start with one controller or turn-taking, test every scene and playback layout on a private stream, and design the interaction around real platform latency. The reviewed documentation does not establish a ready-to-install shared-cursor product, so any claim of turnkey support should be treated cautiously.
