To set up Verizon family safety controls, install Verizon Family on the parent phone, sign in with a My Verizon Account Owner or Manager credential, create family member profiles, and pair each child phone with Verizon Family Companion. Pairing is the essential step: content filters, app and web activity, and many time controls depend on the Companion app and its permissions.
Verizon Family’s standard service is included with an eligible Verizon monthly mobile account or Gizmo Watch service. Verizon Family Plus adds advanced content blocking, activity and screen-time controls, internet pausing, expanded location alerts, driving insights, roadside assistance and Family Line features, but eligibility and pricing depend on your plan and devices.
What Verizon Family controls—and what it does not
Verizon Family is a carrier-linked safety and supervision service for phones and certain connected devices. A parent or guardian manages profiles from the Verizon Family app, while a child phone uses Verizon Family Companion to apply controls and report supported activity.
- Content controls: Filter supported categories such as messaging, games and email, and toggle individual apps or app groups.
- Time controls: Create school, bedtime or custom schedules that pause cellular calls, texts and mobile data during a restriction.
- Location tools: Share locations, save places and create arrival or departure alerts when the required Plus, pairing, sharing and GPS conditions are met.
- Activity visibility: Review supported web and app activity and receive noteworthy-event alerts. Reporting depends on the Companion app, permissions and the type of connection or app being used.
- Safety exceptions: Verizon states that 911 and trusted contacts remain available during scheduled cellular restrictions.
These mobile controls are separate from parental-control rules configured on a Verizon home router. A router rule can govern devices using that home network; Verizon Family governs the enrolled mobile profile and its paired device. If you need both, configure each system independently.

Check requirements before you begin
Setup is smoother when both phones and the account are ready. Use this checklist before opening the app:
- A parent phone with the Verizon Family app installed.
- A My Verizon user ID or mobile number with Account Owner or Manager access. A line user without either role cannot complete the family-management setup.
- The child phone physically available for pairing. You will need to follow a text message or in-app pairing instruction on that phone.
- Verizon Family Companion on the child phone. Verizon lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 15 or later for supported child phones.
- Permission to use the Companion app’s required services, including its VPN profile when prompted. Content filtering and activity reports can fail if this permission is denied.
- Location Services and GPS enabled on devices if you plan to use location sharing or boundary alerts.
- Agreement within your household about what is monitored, who can see a location and when restrictions apply. Explain the controls to older children rather than treating them as invisible surveillance.
If another parental-control app is installed, note its VPN, device-administrator or Screen Time settings. Competing controls can prevent Companion from installing or receiving the permissions it needs.
Set up the parent account and family
- Install Verizon Family on the parent or guardian phone. Use the official app listing for your phone’s operating system, then open the app.
- Sign in to My Verizon. Enter a My Verizon user ID or mobile number that has Account Owner or Manager access. If the app rejects your credentials, ask the account owner to grant the appropriate account role; reinstalling the app will not fix an authorization problem.
- Create the family. Follow the prompts to name or create the family group and add members.
- Assign a role to each person. Verizon Family supports Guardian, Member and Child/Dependent roles. Give Guardian access only to adults who should manage controls; use Child/Dependent for the profiles you intend to supervise.
- Send invitations or complete member setup. The app will provide instructions for people who need to join or confirm a profile. Keep the parent app open while you finish the child-device pairing.
At this stage you have profiles, not necessarily protected phones. Filtering and monitoring become meaningful only after each child device is assigned to the correct profile and paired through Companion.

Pair every child phone separately. A profile can exist without a working device association, so verify the device name under the intended Child/Dependent profile after setup.
- Open the child profile in Verizon Family. From the parent phone, choose the child or dependent you want to configure and select the option to add or pair a device.
- Install Verizon Family Companion on the child phone. Verizon supports Android 6.0 or later and iOS 15 or later for the Companion app.
- Start the pairing flow. Verizon sends a text or displays in-app instructions. Open that instruction on the child phone and follow the prompts until the parent app confirms the association.
- Approve requested permissions. Companion may request permission for notifications, usage or activity reporting, location and its VPN profile. Read each prompt and allow the permissions required for the controls you plan to use.
- Confirm the result. Return to the parent app and check that the child phone appears as paired under the right profile. If the app still says setup is incomplete, do not proceed to filter configuration; resolve pairing first.
Pairing is the key setup step for content filtering and web/app monitoring. Without it, the parent app may show a profile but cannot reliably enforce or report the controls that depend on Companion.

Block apps and categories
After pairing, configure content controls from the child profile. The labels can vary slightly by app version, but Verizon’s documented path is child profile > Parental Controls > Filter content.
- Open the child’s profile in Verizon Family.
- Choose Parental Controls, then Filter content.
- Select the categories you want to restrict, such as messaging, games or email.
- Review the individual apps or groups shown in each category and toggle the specific items you want filtered.
- Save the changes and allow time for the paired phone to receive the policy.
- Test one blocked app or site on the child phone while it is connected to cellular data and, separately, while it is on Wi-Fi.
Filtering is not universal. Verizon notes that some Apple system apps and certain guest or multi-profile configurations cannot be filtered. Apps outside Verizon’s supported categories may not appear in the list, and an offline app may generate no activity record. A missing app in the list is therefore not proof that it is safe or unrestricted; it may simply be outside the supported filter set.
What to expect on iPhone
iOS system apps and Apple-managed profiles have restrictions that a carrier companion app cannot override. If a built-in Apple app cannot be toggled in Verizon Family, use the phone’s own parental settings for that app or service, while keeping Verizon Family for the controls it supports.
What to expect on Android
Android guest accounts and multi-profile configurations can bypass or prevent filtering. Keep the child’s use in the enrolled profile, and remove or secure extra user profiles if your household policy requires consistent enforcement.
Create school, bedtime and custom schedules
Use schedules when you want the phone to become less distracting at predictable times. Open the child profile and add a time restriction for school, bedtime or another period, then set the days and start and end times.

- Open the child profile in Verizon Family.
- Open the time or restriction controls and choose to add a schedule.
- Name the schedule, for example School or Bedtime, and select the applicable days.
- Set the start and end time, then save and activate the schedule.
- Check the child phone during the scheduled window to confirm the expected behavior.
During a restriction, Verizon says cellular calls, texts and data are paused. 911 and trusted contacts remain available. Wi-Fi may still work, so a schedule is not necessarily a complete internet shutdown. If the goal is to stop all internet access at home, you must also configure the household router’s parental controls; those rules are separate from Verizon Family.

Tell family members which contacts are trusted before activating a schedule, and verify that emergency calling works on the child phone. Do not use a schedule as a substitute for an emergency plan or a conversation about when a child should contact an adult.
Set up location sharing, saved places and boundary alerts
Location sharing and place alerts require more than turning on a switch. Verizon lists four prerequisites for arrival and departure alerts: a Verizon Family Plus subscription, paired devices, location sharing and GPS.
- Confirm that the child phone is paired and that the family member has location sharing enabled.
- Turn on Location Services and GPS on the relevant phones. A phone with location disabled cannot produce dependable arrival or departure events.
- In the location section, add a saved place such as Home, School or a relative’s house.
- Set the place’s radius so the boundary reflects the actual entrance area rather than an entire neighborhood.
- Choose the family member to track and select the alert direction: arrival, departure or both.
- Save the place and test the alert after the phone has a clear location signal.
Location accuracy varies with GPS reception, indoor conditions, battery state and the phone’s permission settings. Treat a delayed or missing alert as a signal-quality or permission issue first, not as proof that the person never reached the place.
Safe Walk
Verizon has described Safe Walk as an option that lets a child ask a parent to start watching their movement on the map while they are traveling. Stephen Sneeden, Verizon’s Senior Manager of Consumer Products, described it as a feature that tells the parent to start watching when the child feels concerned and wants an adult to have eyes on them as they move. Availability depends on the Family service, device and plan in use.

Review web and app activity
Open the child profile and review the activity or noteworthy-event area after the Companion app has been running with its required permissions. Activity may include use over Wi-Fi, not only Verizon cellular data, because Companion reports through the device rather than relying solely on the mobile network.
- Web activity: Look for supported domains or categories recorded by Companion.
- App activity: Review supported app use and the times at which it was reported.
- Noteworthy events: Check alerts that Verizon identifies as requiring attention.
- Gaps: Offline apps may not appear, and unsupported apps or profiles may produce no record.
Use activity reports as a conversation aid, not as a complete forensic log. A blank report can mean the app was offline, the permission was revoked, the activity was outside Verizon’s supported categories or the child used a profile that Companion does not cover.
Standard Verizon Family versus Family Plus
Verizon’s current FAQ lists the following service and pricing terms. They are plan-dependent and can change, so confirm the offer shown in My Verizon before subscribing.
| Item | Standard Verizon Family | Verizon Family Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Included with a Verizon monthly mobile account or Gizmo Watch service, subject to account terms. | Available only on eligible plans and devices; terms can change. |
| Basic family management | Family creation, member roles and paired-device management. | Includes the standard family-management foundation. |
| Advanced controls | Feature availability depends on the account and device. | Advanced content blocking, app and web activity, screen-time management and internet pausing. |
| Location and safety | Basic location features may depend on the service configuration. | Expanded location alerts, driving insights and roadside assistance, subject to requirements. |
| Family Line | Not stated as a standard-tier feature in Verizon’s FAQ. | Family Line; Verizon says up to five smartphones can share one Family Line number. |
| Price examples | Included with the eligible Verizon account or Gizmo Watch service. | $14.99 per month on legacy plans; $10 per month as a myPlan perk; included with the new Unlimited Ultimate plan, according to Verizon’s current FAQ. |
Choose Plus when you specifically need the advanced controls, expanded place alerts, driving features, roadside assistance or Family Line and your plan qualifies. If you only need the controls already available in your included service, adding Plus may not provide value. Check the exact feature list attached to your account because Verizon can change eligibility and terms.

- Which adults have Guardian or Manager access.
- Whether location sharing is continuous or limited to saved-place alerts and Safe Walk requests.
- Which categories and apps are restricted, and the process for requesting an exception.
- When schedules apply and which contacts remain trusted.
- How long the family will retain screenshots, notifications or other records outside the Verizon app.
Review permissions after operating-system updates. A child can unintentionally disable location, VPN or usage access while changing privacy settings, and a system update can prompt for permission again. If monitoring stops, check the permission state on the child phone before changing every family rule.
Troubleshoot missing filters, reports or schedules
The child phone does not appear as paired
- Verify that the phone is assigned to the intended Child/Dependent profile.
- Confirm that Verizon Family Companion is installed on that phone and that the pairing flow was completed from the text or in-app instruction.
- Check that the parent signed in with Account Owner or Manager access.
- Update the apps and restart both phones, then reopen the pairing flow.
Content filters are missing or do nothing
- Open the child profile and confirm that content filtering is enabled under Parental Controls > Filter content.
- Check that Companion has its required permissions, including the VPN profile when requested.
- Test with a supported category or app. Apple system apps, guest profiles, multi-profile configurations and unsupported categories may not be filterable.
- Look for another parental-control app that is blocking Companion’s installation or permission changes.
- Test on both cellular data and Wi-Fi, because the behavior can differ by connection and app.
Activity reports are empty
Confirm that Companion is running, permissions remain granted and the phone has connected recently. Offline apps may not appear, and activity outside Verizon’s supported categories is not guaranteed to be reported. A blank report is not a guarantee that no activity occurred.
A schedule blocks more or less than expected
Check the schedule’s days, start time and end time, then test whether the phone is using Wi-Fi. Scheduled restrictions pause cellular calls, texts and data, but Wi-Fi may remain available. Verify that 911 and trusted contacts are still configured as expected.
Location or boundary alerts do not arrive
Confirm all four Verizon requirements: Family Plus, a paired device, location sharing and GPS. Then check that the phone has Location Services permission, a usable signal and an appropriate saved-place radius. Alerts can be delayed when the phone is indoors, offline or conserving battery.
Keep mobile and home-network controls separate
Verizon Family’s mobile controls and Verizon router parental controls operate at different layers. Family follows the enrolled profile and Companion app across supported connections; router rules apply to devices using that home network. A bedtime schedule in Verizon Family does not automatically turn off a child’s Wi-Fi access, and a router rule does not create Verizon Family location alerts or mobile activity reports.
For a consistent household policy, document both sets of rules: list which restrictions follow the phone everywhere and which apply only at home. Test the phone at home on Wi-Fi, away from home on cellular data and, if relevant, on another Wi-Fi network.
A practical setup and review routine
- Day one: Create the family, assign roles and pair every child phone.
- After pairing: Enable only the content categories and apps your household actually intends to restrict.
- Before school or bedtime: Add one schedule and test it rather than creating many overlapping rules.
- If location is needed: Enable sharing and GPS, create one saved place and verify an alert before adding more.
- After the first week: Review activity reports with the child, identify false positives or unsupported apps and adjust the policy.
- Monthly: Recheck app permissions, operating-system updates, account roles, plan eligibility and the Plus price shown in My Verizon.
This staged approach makes it clear whether a problem comes from account access, pairing, permissions, an unsupported app or a plan requirement.
