To set up UPI, install an official UPI-enabled app, verify the mobile number registered with your bank, create an app passcode, link your bank account and set a UPI PIN. For your first payment, use the recipient’s UPI ID or official QR code, confirm the payee name and amount shown by the app, and enter your PIN only to authorise that outgoing payment. Never share your PIN, app passcode or OTP, and never enter a PIN to receive money.
What UPI is and why the setup details matter
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) connects a bank account to a mobile app so you can send money, pay a merchant or approve a collect request without typing the recipient’s bank-account number and IFSC each time. Your bank-registered mobile number and the SIM containing it are central to onboarding: the app uses mobile verification to find eligible accounts.
UPI is now a mainstream payment rail in India. A 2026 Press Information Bureau release says UPI accounted for 81% of India’s retail digital payments in financial year 2024–25. The same release identifies device binding, PIN-based two-factor authentication and transaction limits as safeguards. Those controls help, but they do not verify that a stranger’s payment request is legitimate. You still have to check who will receive the money before authorising it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What you need before registering
- A bank account that supports UPI.
- The active SIM containing the mobile number registered with that bank. If you have two SIMs, identify the registered one before starting.
- An Android or iOS phone with a working internet connection, screen lock and enough battery to complete SMS or mobile verification.
- Your debit card, if the app asks for its last six digits and expiry date to create the first UPI PIN.
- The official app-store version of your bank’s app or another reputable UPI-enabled app. NPCI’s BHIM service is available on Android and iOS.
Do not register from an app-store link sent by a stranger or from an APK downloaded elsewhere. Check the publisher name, reviews and update history, then install only the genuine app.

How to set up UPI step by step
1. Install and open an official UPI app
Download your bank’s official app or a reputable UPI app from the official Android or iOS store. Open it and choose the option to register for UPI, payments or a virtual payment address (the wording differs by app). Allow only permissions that are needed for registration and payments.
2. Select the bank-registered SIM
When the app asks which number to verify, select the SIM containing the phone number registered with your bank. The app may send an SMS from that SIM or briefly verify it over the mobile network. Keep outgoing SMS enabled and make sure the phone can send messages; a disabled SMS plan, poor signal or choosing the wrong SIM can make registration fail.
If the app cannot detect the number, check that the SIM is in the phone, mobile data is enabled, the app has the required phone or SMS permission and the number at the bank is current. Contact the bank through its official channel if the registered number has changed.
3. Create an app passcode
Set the passcode that protects entry to the app. This is an app-unlock credential, not the UPI PIN used to authorise a bank transaction. Use a different code when the app permits it, and do not reuse your phone-unlock code if someone else could know it. Never disclose the passcode to a caller claiming to be bank support.
4. Link the bank account
Select your bank from the list. The app will retrieve eligible accounts associated with the verified mobile number. NPCI says account details are retrieved in masked form over secure banking networks, so you should see only the accounts that match the verified bank relationship. Choose the account you intend to use and confirm the displayed masked details.
If no account appears, the mobile number in the bank’s records may not match the SIM, the account may not be enabled for UPI, or the bank’s service may be temporarily unavailable. Do not “fix” this by entering someone else’s number or by sharing account credentials; resolve the mismatch with the bank.

5. Create your UPI PIN
Choose the linked account and select Set UPI PIN (the label can vary). In BHIM’s documented flow, you enter the last six digits and expiry date of the debit card linked to that account, then choose a 4- to 6-digit UPI PIN. NPCI defines the UPI-PIN as a 4-6 digit passcode created during first registration.
Some banks and apps may offer other approved setup methods. NPCI circular OC-226, dated 7 October 2025, allows optional UIDAI face authentication for setting or resetting a PIN where a bank and app have implemented it. The existing PIN method remains available. Follow the exact screen shown by your bank; never type the full card number, CVV or OTP into a message, call or website that is not the official app.
Choose a PIN that is hard to guess and different from your app passcode, card PIN and phone unlock code. Memorise it rather than writing it on the phone case. The UPI PIN authorises money leaving the account, so anyone who obtains it may be able to approve a payment.
6. Confirm the account and UPI ID
Review the linked account, bank name and virtual payment address (UPI ID) displayed in the app. Send a small test payment only when you recognise the recipient and have verified the details. If the app lets you manage more than one account or UPI ID, note which account is selected before each payment.
How to make your first UPI payment safely
Option A: Pay with a UPI ID
- Ask the recipient to provide their UPI ID through a trusted channel. Do not copy an ID from an unexpected message without confirming it.
- Open the app and choose Send, Pay or the equivalent option.
- Enter or paste the UPI ID and type the amount. If the app offers a saved contact, verify that it is the intended person.
- Wait for the app to retrieve the payee name. Stop if the name is missing, unexpected or spelled differently from the person or business you mean to pay.
- Read the amount, account or merchant name and any note on the confirmation page. Correct errors before continuing.
- Enter the UPI PIN only after the details are correct. The PIN authorises this outgoing bank transaction.
- Wait for the success screen and notification. Keep the transaction reference until the recipient confirms receipt.
Option B: Pay by QR code
- Ask the intended recipient to display its official QR code, or use the merchant’s clearly identified payment terminal or counter. Do not scan a QR code sent by an unknown person.
- Choose Scan & Pay in the app and scan the code in good light.
- Check the payee name and merchant information returned by the app. NPCI says QR scanning should show merchant information on the payment page.
- Enter or confirm the amount. A QR code may contain a fixed amount or may leave the amount for you to type; check which applies.
- Authorise with your UPI PIN only when both recipient and amount are correct.
- Wait for the success notification. NPCI payment guidance says both payer and merchant should receive a notification after a successful QR payment.
A QR code is not merely a way to receive money: scanning one can initiate a payment. A person who says “scan this and enter your PIN to receive a refund” is asking you to authorise an outgoing transaction.
Option C: Approve a collect request
A collect request asks you to approve a payment initiated by someone else. Open the request inside your official app, inspect the requester name, amount and expiry, and approve only if you created or recognised it. Reject unexpected requests. Approval is equivalent to authorising the displayed transaction; a bank employee will not need your PIN to cancel a request.

Security rules that prevent most UPI losses
- Never share your UPI PIN, app passcode or OTP. NPCI says not to share the UPI PIN and notes that bank customer support will not ask for it.
- Never enter a PIN to receive money. Receiving a credit does not require authorising an outgoing bank transaction.
- Verify the payee name and amount before every PIN entry. Once a UPI payment is initiated, NPCI’s FAQ says it cannot be stopped.
- Scan only an intended recipient’s QR code. A QR can encode a payment destination or amount; the visual pattern itself is not proof that the destination is safe.
- Use official support. Do not call a phone number supplied by a caller or social-media message. Use the number in the bank’s app, statement or official website.
- Keep the phone and app updated. Use a device screen lock, install app updates from the official store and avoid rooted or jail-broken devices, especially when using optional biometric features.
- Do not let another person operate the payment screen. A fraudster can alter the recipient or amount immediately before you enter the PIN.
- Turn on device-finding and remote-lock features. These do not replace contacting the bank, but they reduce exposure if the phone is lost.
UPI authentication choices in 2025–26
The ordinary UPI PIN remains the baseline method. NPCI circular OC-226 (7 October 2025) describes two optional alternatives where the bank, app and device support them:
| Method | What it is used for | Availability and limit |
|---|---|---|
| UPI PIN | Set up and authorise UPI transactions using a 4-6 digit PIN. | Existing method; remains available. |
| UIDAI face authentication | Set or reset a UPI PIN using face verification. | Optional; only where the bank and app implement it. |
| On-device biometric authentication | Authenticate a transaction with a supported device biometric. | Optional and initially available for transactions up to ₹5,000; requires compatible, security-validated implementation. |
Biometrics are not a reason to disable basic security. Keep the device locked, review the payee screen and use the PIN method if the app does not clearly support the alternative. Availability can differ by bank, app, account, operating system and device.
Limits, failed payments and recovery
Transaction limits
NPCI’s current FAQ states that normal UPI transfers are generally up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. Certain categories have higher ceilings, including up to ₹2 lakh, while IPO and Retail Direct transactions can be up to ₹5 lakh under the applicable rules. Your bank, account type, merchant category and app can impose a lower limit. Treat the amount shown by the app as the operative check before authorisation.
| Transaction category | NPCI FAQ ceiling | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Normal UPI transfer | Up to ₹1 lakh per transaction | Bank and category limits may be lower. |
| Specified higher-limit categories | Up to ₹2 lakh | Only eligible categories qualify. |
| IPO or Retail Direct | Up to ₹5 lakh | Applies to those transaction types under the relevant rules. |
If the PIN is rejected
Recheck that you are using the UPI PIN for the selected account, not the debit-card ATM PIN or app passcode. Stop after a failed attempt rather than guessing repeatedly: multiple wrong attempts may temporarily block UPI sending, depending on the bank. Use the app’s official reset flow, which may request debit-card details or an implemented face-authentication method. If the account is locked, contact the bank through its official support channel.
If money is debited but the payment fails
- Do not immediately send a second payment. Save the transaction reference, date, amount, recipient and the status shown in the app.
- Check whether the status is failed, pending or successful, and ask the recipient to check their bank account rather than relying only on a notification.
- NPCI says a debit for a failed transaction is refunded. Its FAQ advises contacting the bank if the money has not returned within one hour.
- For a pending transaction, wait for the status to resolve before retrying. NPCI’s FAQ describes a scenario in which the beneficiary may receive the money within 48 hours.
- If the amount remains unresolved, raise a dispute from the transaction details in the app and with the bank. Give the reference number; never give the UPI PIN or OTP.
If you paid the wrong person
UPI payments generally cannot be stopped after initiation. Contact the recipient immediately and raise a complaint with your bank and the app using the transaction reference. Recovery is not guaranteed, so the prevention step—checking the displayed name and amount before entering the PIN—is decisive.
If the phone or SIM is lost
Contact the bank promptly through its official support channel and ask how to block or suspend UPI access. Block the SIM with the mobile operator, use the phone’s remote-lock or erase function and change credentials that may have been exposed. NPCI notes that a UPI PIN is still required for transactions, but a lost device should be treated as an account-security incident rather than left unattended.

Choosing a UPI app without assuming one is universally safest
Different apps can behave differently with the same bank account. Compare the factors that affect your actual use rather than choosing solely by appearance or a promotional claim.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Bank compatibility and onboarding | Does it find your bank and account reliably with the registered SIM? Is PIN reset available when needed? |
| Payee verification | Does the confirmation screen clearly show the recipient name, merchant details and amount before PIN entry? |
| Complaint and refund workflow | Can you find the transaction reference, raise a dispute and see its status without leaving the app? |
| Security controls | Does it support app lock, device binding, clear collect-request controls and any officially implemented biometric option? |
| Language and accessibility | Are the payment amount, recipient and error messages understandable in your preferred language and usable with your accessibility settings? |
| Support quality | Can you reach official bank or app support from a verifiable channel when a debit is pending or a phone is lost? |
No app can make an unverified QR code safe. The bank, app and device determine which limits and authentication choices you receive, while your payee check determines whether you authorise the intended transaction.
A quick pre-payment checklist
- Am I paying a person or business I intended to contact?
- Did I obtain the UPI ID or QR code through a trusted channel?
- Does the app show the expected recipient or merchant name?
- Is the amount, including any decimal places, correct?
- Am I entering the PIN to send money—not to receive a refund, prize or transfer?
- Have I saved the transaction reference if this is an important payment?
Frequently asked questions
Can I set up UPI without the mobile number registered at my bank?
Usually not. UPI onboarding depends on verifying the bank-registered mobile number. Update the number with your bank first, then register the SIM carrying that number.
Is a UPI ID the same as a bank account number?
No. A UPI ID is a virtual payment address that routes a payment to a linked bank account. The app still displays the receiving name before authorisation when the account can be resolved.
Should I use my debit-card PIN as my UPI PIN?
No. The debit card may be used to verify identity during setup, but the UPI PIN is a separate 4-6 digit credential for UPI transactions.

Why does a payment show pending even though my account was debited?
Bank and network confirmation can be delayed. Keep the reference, do not duplicate the payment immediately and follow the bank’s dispute process if the status or money does not resolve within the applicable timeframe.
Can I use UPI on a rooted or jail-broken phone?
Some basic functions may appear to work, but optional biometric implementations require device compatibility and security validation. A standard, updated device with a screen lock is the safer setup.
