To harden an Arch Linux cloud server with UFW and Fail2ban, first confirm how you will keep or regain SSH access, then allow the server’s actual SSH port before enabling UFW. Set a default-deny inbound policy, permit only needed services, verify both IPv4 and IPv6, and check that Fail2ban uses UFW for temporary bans. UFW is the baseline host firewall; Fail2ban is an optional, log-dependent layer—not a substitute for sound SSH authentication or your cloud provider’s network controls.
What UFW and Fail2ban each do
UFW is a management interface for Linux netfilter firewall rules. It applies default policies and explicit allowances or blocks. Fail2ban watches logs for repeated behavior, such as failed SSH attempts, and can ask a firewall action to temporarily reject traffic from a source address.
| Control | What it addresses | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| UFW | Baseline host traffic policy and explicit service allowances. | A mistaken policy can block legitimate access; the short status view is not a complete ruleset audit. |
| Fail2ban | Repeated behavior detected in logs, typically through temporary source-address bans. | It depends on logging and a running daemon; spoofed sources can cause a trusted address to be banned, and it may add little for key-only SSH. |
| Cloud firewall or security group | Network filtering outside the server. | Behavior and configuration are provider-specific; verify them in the provider’s current documentation. |
Before changing firewall rules, protect your access
Do this inventory before enabling UFW or changing a live policy. A host firewall change can interrupt remote access, and recovery options differ by cloud provider.
- Find the SSH daemon’s actual listening port; do not assume it is the default.
- Record the public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and any trusted administrative source CIDRs.
- Identify the provider’s out-of-band console or other recovery route, and confirm you can use it.
- Check the provider-side firewall separately. Host rules do not replace network controls outside the server.
- Keep your current SSH session open while applying changes, then test a fresh second connection before closing it.
Install UFW and establish a minimal policy
ArchWiki’s UFW guidance uses the ufw package and ufw.service. Avoid enabling iptables.service or the corresponding IPv6 service as a competing manager unless you have deliberately designed how those rule managers interact. UFW’s documented installed defaults are incoming deny, routed deny, and outgoing allow, but it is disabled until enabled and local configuration may differ. Inspect the host rather than treating defaults as proof of its current policy.

For a server, the policy goal is to deny unsolicited inbound traffic and allow only services the machine needs. Add an SSH allowance for the actual port before enabling UFW. For example, if SSH listens on TCP port 2222, a rule for that port would be:
sudo ufw allow 2222/tcp
Replace the example port with the server’s real SSH port. If SSH uses the standard port, UFW also provides an SSH application profile, but an explicit port rule avoids relying on a profile that may not match a nonstandard configuration. Add only the other inbound service rules the machine requires. UFW also supports rate limiting with ufw limit ssh or the appropriate port; use the matching service or port for your setup.

Enable UFW without losing SSH
- Review the current configuration. Check the active policy and existing UFW rules before changing them. Ensure the SSH allowance matches the listening port and, if you restrict by source, the correct administrative address range.
- Enable the firewall only after the allowance is in place. UFW’s
enableoperation activates the policy. On a remote server, keep the established session open; ArchWiki’s installation guidance warns that enabling UFW remotely can disrupt existing connections. - Test a new connection. From a separate terminal or session, establish a fresh SSH connection using the expected address and port. Do not close the working session until the new connection succeeds.
- Check both network layers. Confirm the host policy and provider firewall permit the intended management path, and that unintended inbound services are not reachable through either layer.
Rule order matters: UFW evaluates rules so the first matching rule wins. Put narrow, specific allowances or blocks before broader rules, and use a dry run when reviewing a potentially disruptive change. UFW’s syntax supports direction, protocol, port, source, destination, and comments, allowing rules to be scoped rather than opened broadly.
Inspect the effective rules, not just the short status
ufw status is useful for checking whether UFW is active and viewing UFW-managed user rules, but it does not show rules from /etc/ufw. For a wider view of the underlying ruleset, run:

sudo ufw show raw
Use the raw view as part of an audit, especially after changes or when another service may also manage netfilter rules. A concise status listing alone cannot establish that every inbound path is controlled by the policy you intended.
Configure Fail2ban for SSH only if it helps your setup
Fail2ban can add a secondary response to repeated log-detected activity. It requires the relevant SSH events to be logged and a working firewall action. ArchWiki’s documented example has the SSH jail disabled by default, so enabling the service alone does not establish that SSH bans are active.

- Install the package and use a local configuration. ArchWiki advises configuring Fail2ban in
/etc/fail2ban/jail.localor a file under/etc/fail2ban/jail.d/, rather than editing the package’sjail.conf. - Enable the SSH jail explicitly. Select the SSH jail and set it enabled in your local override. Choose a log backend that matches where SSH logs actually go; ArchWiki’s sample uses
backend = systemd, but that is an example, not a universal setting. - Set thresholds for your environment. Retry limits, the observation window, ban duration, and
ignoreipare configuration choices. ArchWiki’s sample values are examples, not universal recommendations. Add only addresses you genuinely trust to the ignore list. - Check logging. ArchWiki notes that
LogLevel VERBOSEmay be needed for password failures to be logged fully. Confirm the events your chosen jail relies on are actually recorded. - Start and verify the service and jail. Enable and start
fail2ban.service, then check the overall service and SSH jail:
sudo fail2ban-client status
sudo fail2ban-client status sshd
A jail can be running without using the firewall you expect. When UFW manages the host firewall, ArchWiki identifies banaction = ufw as an option. Confirm that the installed Fail2ban package includes the UFW action, inspect the effective jail configuration, and verify a test ban and unban through Fail2ban status and the firewall rules before relying on it. The upstream UFW action configuration requires UFW to be enabled first, and action defaults can vary by installed version.
Understand Fail2ban’s limits and SSH’s stronger controls
Fail2ban depends on a daemon observing useful logs. It is not a replacement for limiting which services are exposed or for strong SSH authentication. ArchWiki cautions that an attacker who knows an administrator’s address may spoof packets in a way that triggers a ban against that address. A mistaken or spoof-induced ban can therefore interfere with legitimate access.

OpenSSH guidance supports disabling password logins in favor of key authentication and restricting SSH to trusted locations where feasible. If SSH accepts only public-key authentication, ArchWiki notes that Fail2ban often adds little for SSH. Maintain a recovery route independent of the address-based ban mechanism.
Check IPv6, Docker, and other firewall managers
IPv6
UFW’s manual says IPv6 is enabled by default, so do not assume an IPv4 rule closes an exposed IPv6 listener. Check the server’s IPv6 addresses, listening services, and applicable UFW rules as well as IPv4. ArchWiki notes that Fail2ban has supported IPv6 since version 0.10, but its firewall configuration must be adapted accordingly.
Docker
ArchWiki warns that Docker in standard mode writes its own iptables rules and ignores UFW rules. As a result, a UFW default-deny inbound policy does not necessarily control traffic to published container ports. If Docker is in use, separately design and validate the packet paths and rule ordering instead of assuming UFW covers them.
Multiple rule managers
Avoid enabling multiple services that independently manage netfilter rules unless you understand how their rules interact. UFW, Docker, and other firewall services can affect what traffic reaches a service and what a status command reveals; inspect the effective ruleset and test the paths that matter.
Quick Recap
Operational checklist
- SSH port and administrative source ranges are confirmed.
- A recovery route exists, and a second SSH connection succeeds after the change.
- Inbound policy allows only required services; provider-side controls have been checked separately.
- IPv4 and IPv6 exposure have both been reviewed.
ufw show rawhas been checked where a fuller ruleset view is needed.- If Fail2ban is used, the SSH jail is explicitly enabled, logs and backend match, the action targets UFW, and ban/unban behavior has been verified.
- Docker-published ports and competing rule managers have been accounted for.
